Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between situational contexts and the linguistic and stylistic features of politicized language within the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by M.A.K. Halliday and others. The main area of research chosen is the wartime discourse of Japanese journalism during the Second World War. The research demonstrates the existence of a wartime register (as representation of real war) and characterizes its major stylistic and linguistic features. The secondary area chosen for the purpose of contrastive analysis is peacetime discourse concerning international conflict, (1) the Olympic Games and (2) whaling. In wartime discourse, journalism not only plays a significant role in maintaining public morale but is an active participant in the construction of the war effort. In the presentation of news, journalistic reports implicitly reconstruct reality by foregrounding death as sacrifice, glorious, and noble, the enemy as weak, and by obscuring a threatening situation by backgrounding defeats and losses. This reconstruction has the intention to regulate and control the ideas and behaviour of people, and to form a strong sense of solidarity in the nation. For this function, linguistic resources are exploited to structure, transform and sometimes mask 'reality' so that newly created discourse can articulate and legitimize new orders of reality which will meet the demands of a particular social situation such as consolidating the power of the state to wage war. Journalism in peacetime discourse, on the other hand, is not harnessed to a war effort and, thus, the use of linguistic devices to foreground and background news events is not an instrument of state power in an open society. The theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics is utilized in this research to provide an illustration and examination of the range and complexity of various linguistic and stylistic devices used in journalistic discourse.

Abstract:
Earlier studies on interpretation such as Garcés (1996) and Hale (2004) show that interpreters often make the mistake of conveying only the semantic meaning; ignoring, misunderstanding or simply not conveying the pragmatic meaning of utterances. Other studies have also touched on issues of the classification of the types of errors made during interpretation Mead (1985), Karton (2008) and Kiguru (2008); they do not, however, provide a good understanding of errors that lead to stylistic and pragmatic modifications in interpretation from and to indigenous African languages. Research on interpretation in Kenyan courts is limited and there is none that examines Dholuo-English interpretations. Consequently, there is a need to have a broad and deep understanding of the stylistic and pragmatic meaning of modifications involving Dholuo-English data. The literature reviewed includes literature on courtroom interpreting and literature on meaning shifts in the courtroom. This study investigates courtroom interpretation using critical stylistic tools to determine the stylistic and pragmatic changes and their impact on ideation and interpersonal communication in the Target Text. The critical stylistic tools used from Jeffries (2010) are: presenting other people’s speech and thoughts, presenting actions and state, as well as naming and describing. In the data analysis, for presenting the speech of others, I use the reported speech categories by Short (2012) to examine fidelity to the text, for the description of actions and states I ground my work in the transitivity model by Halliday as explained by Simpson (1993) and for naming and description I use Halliday’s Functional Grammar to describe the Noun group. For analysis of pragmatic modifications during interpretation, the research is grounded in Austin’s (1962) Speech Act Theory and Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle. The data analysed consists of 12 court cases. The data collected is analysed using qualitative methods of analysis in order to determine inferences, give explanations and make conclusions. The results show changes in the Target Text which include: modifications to adhere to felicity conditions, passivisation to conform to how Dholuo reports speech from senior people, misreporting while using direct speech, distortion of facts, expansion of meaning, vagueness, changes to the verb processes, use of explanations, use of euphemisms that obscure meaning, changes in the tone of the source text and changes in the pre and post modifications of nouns that cause meaning loss. Reasons for these changes are: culturally bound words and phrases, legal jargon which has no Dholuo equivalents, specialised Kenyan English vocabulary, the nature of courtroom interpretation, the additional duties courtroom interpreters in Kenya carry out, as well as lack of training. This research uncovered a new role for interpreters in the courtroom of striving to maintain the dignity of the court as well as a new feature of adherence to felicity conditions in judgements.

Abstract:
Despite the diversity of research on the Libyan Revolution across a spectrum of academic fields, very little work has focused on the representation of this event in media discourse. More specifically, no studies have approached this topic from a critical linguistic perspective using a large corpus, focusing on the qualitative analysis of the corpus findings. The overall aim of this thesis is therefore to investigate linguistically how the Libyan Revolution of 2011 is constructed within a corpus of British broadsheet newspapers. The focus of this study was to explore linguistic evidence to substantiate the claim that British newspapers are biased in their coverage in favour of anti-Gaddafi forces. The investigation of textual bias was guided and assisted by tools and methods from corpus linguistics. In particular, the keyword linguistic tool in WordSmith (Scott, 2004) was utilised as an entry point to the data to provide potential foci for further analysis. The findings of the corpus analysis revealed that keywords referring to the participants involved in the conflict during the Libyan Revolution and action-related words are the dominant lexical items in the coverage of this event in British newspapers. These corpus findings are further studied in context using the concord function in WordSmith, and then interpreted using the tools offered by Critical Stylistics (Jeffries, 2010). The occurrence of different nominal choices referring to the key participants in the Libyan conflict in the keyword list also led me to focus on investigating how those participants have been named and referred to linguistically. The analysis reveals linguistic evidence and discursive strategies showing a biased representation of the Libyan Revolution in the British newspapers in favour of anti-Gaddafi forces. This study has shown that the UK broadsheet newspapers represented a negative stereotypical image of Gaddafi’s side, while simultaneously presenting a neutral and at times even a positive portrayal of the opposition side. Specifically, the choices of linguistic structures result in the legitimation of Gaddafi’s opponents and, conversely, the delegitimisation and suppression of Gaddafi and his government. Finally, it was also observed that the language of British newspapers was highly ideological in representing this event despite British news outlets endorsing the values of democracy, freedom and universal rights. It is important to also recognize that the wider social context influences the processes of production and interpretation of news discourse and helps to explain the reasons behind giving Gaddafi and his government the worst negative image. Considering the socio-political contexts and the close examination of the relation between Libya and Britain reveals that Gaddafi’s negative representation could be seen as a reflection of the excesses of his dictatorship over his own people during his years in power as well as a reflection of his accumulated stock of past wrongdoings and tense relations between him and Britain. Therefore, this representation could be taken as a fact, given Gaddafi’s historical background. However, the analysis reveals that there was unequal treatment of the two sides in the conflict. There was a complete lack of any mitigation on the description of Gaddafi’s side, whereas the rebel side are treated in an apologetic manner. The British newspapers are biased in covering up the violent actions that were committed by the opposition and their violation of human rights. It was obvious that British newspapers act as a dominant source of hegemony by deciding what and how to report. The analysis reveals that the British newspapers tried to support their government in their leading role in the military intervention in Libya. This confirms that news reporting is not free from the subjective interpretation of events, rather it constructs them in a way that reflects their ideological and political viewpoints. Overall, the positive representation of the opposition could be seen as a problematic, as the political consequence of overthrowing Gaddafi results in plaguing Libya in chaos and violence with internal wars run by rebels who were described as good during the revolution.

Abstract:
The main thesis of this study is that the translation of irony from English into Arabic in commentary texts in Australia is not amenable to traditional translation theories. The way Arabic and English speakers employ irony to express themselves reflects the linguistic and cultural distance between both languages. To tackle this problem, the study ventures into a contrastive analysis with reference to a number of linguistic and non-linguistic devices and concepts. It concentrates on the interpretation and the linguistic realisation of irony in both languages by utilising a number of contemporary linguistic models. The research takes the view that ironic devices are the foundation of the structural development of the texts in question. To demonstrate this, the speech act and conversational theories are used. The interaction between the ironic devices and the text development constitute a framework for the overall rhetorical meaning of the text. After an overview of the relevant literature of translation, contrastive analysis and comparative stylistics, an analysis/translation model is devised and implemented. A thorough contrastive analysis is made of English and Arabic commentary texts. Similarities and differences between the Arabic and English texts are found. Discrepancies were observed in the form, function and the number of ironic devices used in both languages. Based on the findings seven general strategies are proposed for the translation of irony in Australian commentary texts from English into Arabic.

Abstract:
This thesis empirically investigates how a corpus linguistic approach can address the main theoretical and methodological challenges facing the field of forensic authorship analysis. Linguists approach the problem of questioned authorship from the theoretical position that each person has their own distinctive idiolect (Coulthard 2004: 431). However, the notion of idiolect has come under scrutiny in forensic linguistics over recent years for being too abstract to be of practical use (Grant 2010; Turell 2010). At the same time, two competing methodologies have developed in authorship analysis. On the one hand, there are qualitative stylistic approaches, and on the other there are statistical ‘stylometric’ techniques. This study uses a corpus of over 60,000 emails and 2.5 million words written by 176 employees of the former American company Enron to tackle these issues in the contexts of both authorship attribution (identifying authors using linguistic evidence) and author profiling (predicting authors’ social characteristics using linguistic evidence). Analyses reveal that even in shared communicative contexts, and when using very common lexical items, individual Enron employees produce distinctive collocation patterns and lexical co-selections. In turn, these idiolectal elements of linguistic output can be captured and quantified by word n-grams (strings of n words). An attribution experiment is performed using word n-grams to identify the authors of anonymised email samples. Results of the experiment are encouraging, and it is argued that the approach developed here offers a means by which stylistic and statistical techniques can complement each other. Finally, quantitative and qualitative analyses are combined in the sociolinguistic profiling of Enron employees by gender and occupation. Current author profiling research is exclusively statistical in nature. However, the findings here demonstrate that when statistical results are augmented by qualitative evidence, the complex relationship between language use and author identity can be more accurately observed.

Abstract:
This thesis is a critical stylistic analysis of the meanings of the lexemes 'feminism', 'feminist(s)' and 'feminist' in UK national newspapers, 2000-2009. It uses the textual-conceptual functions set out in Jeffries (2010a) to investigate the linguistic contexts in which these lexemes occur within the data in order to assess to what extent the movement, the people who represent it, and things that are described as feminist are imbued with different textually constructed meanings. The analysis tests previous studies' findings concerning portrayals of feminism and feminists in the media. Expanding on and responding to this research, this study reports on five main findings: • 'Feminism', 'feminist(s)' and 'feminist' have positive, as well as negative, meanings. • 'Feminism' and 'feminists' are a western phenomenon, with different types in the past and present. • 'Feminism' has a complex meaning, with no single, universal definition and a variety of types. • 'Feminism' is presented as having undergone changes in meaning, as antonymous to other ideas and containing opposed meanings. • Portrayals of 'feminism' are complex, with articles recognising and contesting different meanings of the lexemes. These findings both confirm and question previous studies, which have argued that feminism and feminists are portrayed negatively in newspaper texts. It provides linguistic evidence to support claims made by other non-linguistic studies of the same genre and time period: that portrayals of feminism are 'fragmented' (Mendes, 2011a, p. 49) and that they present feminism as consisting of approved and disapproved types (Dean, 2010). I also discuss the lexemes 'feminism', 'feminist(s)' and 'feminist' in with regard to contested meaning, using critical stylistic tools to analyse how newspaper articles textually construct different meanings of the lexemes, and explicitly discuss and compare different definitions. The thesis argues that the analysis of textual meaning can be used to explore how the meanings of a lexeme or set of lexemes that 'involve ideas and values' (Williams, 1983, p. 17) are constructed in a variety of ways through the linguistic context in which they occur. I also reflect on the usefulness of the textualconceptual functions in the manual analysis of a large dataset, identifying ways in which an analysis that seeks to provide as full as possible an account of the textual construction of meaning can produce findings not possible through other means of analysis.

Resumo: Filiando-nos ao quadro teórico da Análise de Discurso de linha francesa, nossa pesquisa constitui-se em um material em que se encontra de um lado, uma análise do discurso da estilística (sobre o estilo) na produção gramatical do final do século XIX, em relação ao processo de constituição da língua nacional e de outro, uma análise da estilística em relação aos estudos da língua portuguesa, no século XX. Partindo do discurso da estilística (sobre o estilo) na produção gramatical do final do século XIX, procuramos principalmente descrever dois processos diferentes, relativamente à constituição da língua nacional. O primeiro, refere-se ao discurso da estilística (sobre o estilo) enquanto um efeito de sentido que vai nos individualizar em relação à nossa língua. O segundo, trata-se de compreender o discurso da estilística (sobre o estilo) em relação à constituição de uma estilística da língua nacional (um campo de saber sobre a língua), isto é, buscamos descrever a estilística em relação a uma estilística da nossa língua. Como veremos esta estilística é definida enquanto algo individual. Desse modo, as alterações na sintaxe regular são remetidas à ênfase dada pelo indivíduo para reforçar o pensamento. Essa é a estilística que vai se configurar em nossas gramáticas. No caso, esta estilística é o modo que a gramática encontra de anular o que não estaria em sintonia com o seu discurso lógico, garantindo assim a sua hegemonia. Dessa forma, essas alterações dizem respeito ao estilo e não à língua, ao pensamento racional, à gramática. Estas alterações aparecem ¿domesticadas¿ pela noção de estilo. O estilo torna-se necessário para evitar que se visualize que a lógica gramatical não é uma ¿verdade absoluta¿. A gramática delimita o estilo para compreender a língua. Por outro lado, este discurso sobre o estilo nessas gramáticas constitui-se em um esboço de um estudo do modo singular de falar e escrever a língua no Brasil. No entanto, é o discurso tradicional sobre o estilo que vemos se sobressair nessas gramáticas e que constituirá a referência para o desenvolvimento de um estudo (e do ensino) estilístico no Brasil. As gramáticas vão trabalhar com esta concepção tradicional de estilo. Ou seja, é esta concepção de estilo que vem ¿sobrevivendo¿ aos tempos pela tradição gramatical. Nessa direção, o ensino do estilo ¿combina¿ com o ensino da gramática. Mostraremos também outros estudos estilísticos realizados no Brasil que vêm de outras filiações (que não pela gramática tradicional). Ou seja, partindo do final do século XIX, em que procuramos descrever a relação entre o discurso da estilística e a gramática, no processo histórico de constituição da língua nacional, nosso trabalho seguiu em frente com a análise de algumas obras sobre estilística, no Brasil, no século XX, visando observar o desdobramento desta relação (entre o discurso da estilística e a gramática), apontando para uma independentização da estilística. E, para finalizar, queremos dizer que o discurso da estilística na produção gramatical do final do século XIX, mobilizava as figuras de sintaxe para realçar a materialidade lingüístico-histórica da língua nacional. Em outras palavras, o discurso da estilística de que estamos falando era fundamentalmente figuras de sintaxe. Portanto, procuramos caracterizar o discurso sobre o estilo nessas gramáticas. Que discurso é este, de que ele fala? Como veremos, ele vai mobilizar as figuras de sintaxe para o seu domínio
Abstract: Starting from the theoretical perspective of the French School of Discourse Analysis, this research is constituted in a material that it is on a side, an analysis of the discourse of the stylistic (about the style) in the grammatical production of the end of the 19th century, in relation to the process of constitution of the national language and other, an analysis of the stylistic in relation to the studies of the portuguese language, in the 20th century. Taking the discourse of the stylistic (about the style) in the grammatical production of the end of the 19th century, we tried mainly to describe two different processes, relatively to the constitution of the national language. The first, refers to the discourse of the stylistic (about the style) while a sense effect that will individualize us in relation to our language. The second, is understood the discourse of the stylistic (about the style) in relation to the constitution of a stylistic of the national language (a field of knowledge on the language), that is, we looked for to describe the stylistic in relation to a stylistic of our language. As we will see this stylistic it is defined while something individual. The alterations in the regular syntax are remitted to the emphasis given by the individual to reinforce the thought. This is the stylistic that will configure in our grammar. In the case, this stylistic is the way that the grammar finds of ¿annulling¿ what it would not be in syntony with your logical/rational discourse, guaranteeing the your hegemony. Thus, those alterations concern to the style and not to the language, to the rational thought, to the grammar. These alterations appear ¿domesticated¿ for the notion of style. The style becomes necessary to avoid that is visualized that the grammatical logic is not a ¿absolute true¿. The grammar delimits the style to understand the language. On the other hand, this discourse about the style in those grammars is constituted in a sketch of a study in the singular way of to speak and to write the language in Brazil. However, it is the traditional discourse about the style that we see it stands out in those grammars and that will constitute the reference for the development of a study (and of the teaching) stylistic in Brazil. The grammars will work with this traditional conception of style. In other words, it is this conception of the style that is ¿surviving¿ the times for the grammatical tradition. In that direction, the teaching of the style ¿combines¿ with the teaching of the grammar. We will show other stylistic studies also accomplished in Brazil that they come from other filiations (that not for the traditional grammar). That is, starting of the end of the 19th century, in that we tried to describe the relationship between the discourse of the stylistic and the grammar, in the historical process of constitution of the national language, our work went straight ahead with the analysis of some works on stylistic, in Brazil, in the 20th century, seeking to observe the unfolding of this relationship (between the discourse of the stylistic and the grammar), appearing for an independence of the stylistic. And, to conclude, we want to say that the discourse of the stylistic in the grammatical production of the end of the 19th century, mobilized the syntax figures to enhance the linguistic-historical materiality of the national language. In other words, the discourse of the stylistic that are speaking it was fundamentally syntax figures. Therefore, we tried to characterize the discourse about the style in those grammars. What discourse is this, that it speaks? As we will see, it will mobilize the syntax figures for your domain

Cette thèse vise à procéder à une analyse minutieuse de la transformation de la forme et du sens dans la traduction des Robâïât de Omar Khayyám, dans quatre importantes traductions – deux en anglais et deux en français, des XIXe et XXe siècles. Les traducteurs des traductions sélectionnées sont Edward FitzGerald, Arthur John Arberry, Jean-Baptiste Nicolas et Gilbert Lazard. Les traductions réalisées par ces traducteurs ont offert des possibilités d’investigation dans un cadre linguistique donné. En effet, on peut se demander si les traducteurs ont transformé la signification et la forme des quatrains perses. Si oui, quelles procédures ont-ils utilisées ? Plus précisément, comment les réseaux signifiants sous-jacents ont-ils été rendus par les plus importants traducteurs anglais et français des XIXe et XXe siècles ? Par ailleurs, il s’agira d’essayer d’évaluer la qualité de l’écriture dans la langue cible de chaque traduction. En somme, cette thèse cherche à comprendre si les traducteurs sont parvenus à saisir l’importance de la signification du sous-texte et l’élégance de la forme poétique des Robâïât. Cette thèse propose une application scientifique des concepts théoriques de différents chercheurs en traductologie, linguistique et littérature. Les théories dominantes utilisées dans la présente étude sont celles d’Antoine Berman, de Henri Meschonnic, Peter Newmark, Eugene Albert Nida, Susan Bassnett, Mona Baker, Geoffrey N. Leech, I.A. Richards, Roger T. Bell, George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, Michael Hanne, et Max Black. En outre, il doit être indiqué que cette thèse vise à créer un équilibre entre deux pôles de la traductologie, à savoir celui qui s’intéresse aux traductions orientées vers la langue cible et celui qui s’intéresse aux traductions orientées vers la langue source.La traduction des Robâïât dans les langues germaniques et romanes est un sujet digne d’intérêt et propice à la discussion. Cette recherche vise à montrer que l’étude des traductions des Robâïât pourrait contribuer à mettre en évidence les difficultés et même l’impossibilité qu’il y a à rendre certaines caractéristiques de l’original persan en anglais et en français
This thesis aims to carry out a meticulous analysis of the transformation of form and meaning in the rendition of the Rubáiyát in four significant 19th and 20th-century translations—two in English and two in French. The translators of the selected translations are Edward FitzGerald, Arthur John Arberry, Jean-Baptiste Nicolas, and Gilbert Lazard. The translations produced by these translators have offered opportunities of investigation within linguistic boundaries. In fact, one may wonder if the translators have transformed the meaning and the form of the Persian quatrains. If so, which procedures have they employed? More precisely, how are the underlying networks of signification rendered by the most significant English and French translators of the 19th and 20th centuries? Furthermore, what is the quality of the writing in the target language in each translation? On the whole, this thesis seeks to appreciate whether the translators have been successful in understanding the significance of the subtext and the elegance of the poetic form of the Rubáiyát.This dissertation provides its readers with a scientific application of the theoretical concepts of different theorists in translation studies, linguistics, and literature. The most salient theories employed in the present research are those of Antoine Berman, Henri Meschonnic, Peter Newmark, Eugene Albert Nida, Susan Bassnett, Mona Baker, Geoffrey N. Leech, I.A. Richards, Roger T. Bell, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, Michael Hanne, and Max Black. In addition, it must be indicated that this thesis sets out to create a balance between two poles in translation studies, i.e. target-oriented and source-oriented translations.The translation of Omar Khayyám’s Rubáiyát into Germanic and Romance languages is an interesting and controversial subject to discuss. The thesis is written against a fairly recent background of dispute and acrimony centring on the analysis and interpretation of secular texts using either the long-established, literary-critical approach, or the newer, stylistics approach based on modern linguistics. Linguistic stylistics seeks to relate the observations of literary criticism rigorously to the linguistic infra-structure. The thesis sets out to test a form of stylistics based on systemic linguistics, a linguistics originating with J.R. Firth and developed especially by M.A.K. Halliday. It is ideally suited to the interpretation of all kinds of texts, because it is based on a semanticized grammar, i.e. it relates grammar to meaning and to social context and use. The thesis explores how the language of a text constructs meaning, and stylistics is offered as a methodology to evaluate the detailed data of linguistic analysis and to articulate the relationship between the given of a text and the intuitions of the reader. It does not eschew polysemy, which is of the very nature of texts, especially literary ones, and a major constituent in the pleasure of reading, but explores the limits set by the language to interpretation. I have applied it to a broad range of excerpts from Biblical Hebrew writings covering narrative, conversation, persuasion and poetry. Stylistics is not meant to replace or subordinate other approaches, but is a preliminary and complementary method, demanding of the interpreter a serious regard for language.

The principal objective of this study was to explore what rhetorical strategies and stylistic devices Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and Barack Obama use in their political speeches and how these devices help them to gain the audience’s attention and render the message. The speeches of the two Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and B. Obama were analyzed in order to highlight the patterns of the usage of rhetorical strategies and to investigate the stylistic devices which are aimed at making speech more emphatic, expressive and persuasive. The method chosen for the study was content analysis including generalization and evaluation of the results. The results of the research showed a significant contribution of stylistic means to persuade the listeners on an emotional level or even to manipulate them. The next step of the study must be conducted to determine stylistic means which can influence rhythmical feature of the speech.

Analizuojant kalbas buvo atliktos lyginamoji, turinio, diskurso, taip pat apibendrinimo ir vertinimo analizės. Gauti rezultatai patvirtina, kad prezidentai, siekdami savo tikslų per politinę retoriką, bando manipuliuoti auditorijos įsitikinimais ir taip paveikti visuomenės veiksmus. Kitas žingsnis turėtų būti atliekamas siekiant nustatyti tas stilistines priemones naudojamas kalbose, kurios turi įtakos kalbos ritmiškumui.

Källtexten utgörs av första kapitlet i Aleksej Tolstojs Chmuroe utro (Grå gryning), tredje delen av hans trilogi Choždenie po mukam (Lidandets väg). I mitt översättningsarbete följer jag Eugene Nidas princip om dynamisk ekvivalens och i min kommentar fokuserar jag på att förklara hur jag arbetat med min översättning utifrån Nidas teorier och hur jag löst de översättningsproblem som uppstått under arbetets gång i enlighet med principen om dynamisk ekvivalens. I arbetet tar jag även upp den speciella problematik det inneburit att trilogins två förra delar redan finns på svenska i översättning av en annan översättare och redogör för hur jag valt att förhålla mig till denna tidigare översättning.
This essay covers the translation of a fictional prose text from Russian to Swedish, the source text being the first chapter of Aleksey Tolstoy’s Chmuroe utro (Bleak Morning), the third part of his trilogy Choždenie po mukam (The Ordeal). A commentary of this translation is provided, where the linguistic abstractions encountered throughout the process are documented. My methodology attempts to emulate that of Eugene Nida and his principle of “Dynamic Equivalence”. This procedure is addressed in the commentary, as I explain how utilisation of Nida's theories can assist in overcoming the numerous peculiarities inherent to translation. I also deal with the issue regarding the first two books of the trilogy, which have already been translated into Swedish by another translator. In my work, I explain how and why I have chosen to relate to the earlier translation.

The purpose of this study is to present a stylistic analysis of the piano music by American-Spanish composer and pianist Elisenda Fábregas (b.1955). Fábregas' compositional output includes more than forty works for solo, chamber ensemble, vocal, chorus and orchestra; her large-scale piano works consist of Mirage (1997), Portraits I (2000), Homenatge a Mompou (2006), and Hommage à Mozart (2006). Chapter I consists of an introduction, including the purpose of the investigation and a literature review. Chapter II covers brief biographical information, compositional genre and style, and compositional output of piano, vocal and chamber music. Chapter III provides a stylistic analysis of the four concert piano works of Fábregas: Mirage (1997), Portraits I (2000), Homenatge a Mompou (2006) and Hommage à Mozart (2006). Chapter IV consists of a summary, conclusion, and recommendations for further research.

Based on the premise that modernity’s understanding of the linguistic sign has a long history dating back to ancient Greece when the linguistic mediation of knowledge preoccupied thinkers like Parmenides and Plato, this dissertation synthesizes contemporary post-structuralist and rhetorical understandings of language with like-minded findings of other fields of language study. It sees post-structuralist and deconstructive understandings of language as being congruent with the long tradition of rhetorical theory and the infamous linguistic turn in philosophy, that was initiated by the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, as a turn away from the actual phenomena of language towards an idealization of it. Nevertheless the thesis discovers recent findings by some of the beneficiaries of the “philosophy of language” that corroborate rhetorical theory’s insights. Inspired by both Derrida and Plato, this dissertation presents a rhetorical-deconstructive image of language that, recalling the root of the term skopevw (‘I look,’ ‘behold,’ ‘contemplate’), I characterize as sceptical. This study follows the theoretical matrix of de Man, Fish, Culler and Barbara Johnson, who are, of course, themselves following Derrida. It has a holistic attitude to language characteristic of the Bakhtin/Volsohinov approach, drawing insights from classical and contemporary rhetorical theory, post-structuralist theory, findings of systemic functional grammar, recent work in cognitive science and psychology on affect and language use, the scholarship of reported speech, and the ostensive-inferential theory of communication called Relevance. This cross border work in intellectual history, language theory and stylistics examines the interstices of theory and style in the work of figures such as Plato, Aristotle, Bacon, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Voloshinov, Bakhtin and Derrida. Sperber and Wilson, Scholars of Reported Speech and Halliday are central to its findings; the thinking of William James and Silvan Tomkins play supporting roles. It positions Plato as the founder of rhetorical theory and studies the voices of Plato and Derrida as language theorists. I examine both how Plato and Derrida talk about language and what theories of language underlie their styles, determining finally that their sceptical-rhetorical theories prompt their ironic-conversational stylistics.

This thesis addresses the problem of grounding linguistic analysis in control applications, such as automated maintenance of computers and game playing. We assume access to natural language documents that describe the desired behavior of a control algorithm, either via explicit step-by-step instructions, via high-level strategy advice, or by specifying the dynamics of the control domain. Our goal is to develop techniques for automatically interpreting such documents, and leveraging the textual information to effectively guide control actions. We show that in this setting, langauge analysis can be learnt effectively via feedback signals inherent to the control application, obviating the need for manual annotations. Moreover we demonstrate how information automatically acquired from text can be used to improve the performance of the target control application. We apply our ideas to three applications of increasing linguistic and control complexity - interpreting step-by-step instructions into commands in a graphical user interface; interpreting high-level strategic advice to play a complex strategy game; and leveraging text descriptions of world dynamics to guide high-level planning. In all cases, our methods produce text analyses that agree with human notions of correctness, while yielding significant improvements over strong text-unaware methods in the target control application.

The need for the automatic analysis of opinions in written texts, which has been growing in recent years in several domains, has made Sentiment Analysis a very popular field (Liu 2012). In this area, systems have been traditionally classifying sentences as positive or negative only in accordance to the sentiment that words most frequently assume (e.g. “angry” negative, “beautiful” positive). Such strategies present two main limitations: 1. Multiple opinions often appear in the same sentence, with each expressing an opposing sentiment on different subjects (e.g. a positive opinion is expressed on the plot of a film, but a negative one on the actors' performance). 2. The most frequent sentiment, collected in sentiment dictionaries, does not take into account the fact that context often alters the orientation. Sentiment dictionaries have also been demonstrated to have small coverage (Di Bari, Sharoff et al. 2013, Di Bari 2015). As a consequence, I propose an automatic system based on deep linguistic knowledge given in particular by dependency parsing relations (Nivre 2005) and by attributes taken from the Appraisal framework (Martin and White 2005), a theory concerned with the language of evaluation, attitude and emotion within Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday 1978). As a basis for the creation of the automatic system, I tailored an annotation scheme called SentiML inspired by previous works (Whitelaw, Garg et al. 2005, Bloom, Garg et al. 2007, Bloom and Argamon 2009) and carried out the annotation task in three languages (English, Italian and Russian) by using MAE (Stubbs 2011). The resulting corpora consist of around 500 sentences and 9000 tokens for each language. The corpora contain both original texts and translations of different types: news, political speeches and TED talks (Cettolo, Girardi et al. 2012). The foundation of SentiML lies in the fact that an opinion can be captured in a pair consisting of usually two words with different functions: a target as the expression the sentiment refers to, and a modifier as the expression conveying the sentiment. The pair consisting of the target and the modifier altogether is called appraisal group. Along with these main categories, the annotation includes their attributes, among which the most important are the appraisal type according to the Appraisal framework (‘affect’, ‘appreciation’, ‘judgement’) and the orientation (‘positive’ or ‘negative’, both out-of-context and contextual). A detailed manual analysis of the translation strategies (Baker 2002) and the appraisal types across the corpora, supported by insights from Corpus Linguistics has been carried out. The most interesting expressions found during such analysis have been automatically analysed afterwards with the aim of having a further evaluation of the system. Nonetheless, the main evaluation consists of a comparison with a rule-based system that makes use of already existing tools such as the part-of-speech (POS) tagger and the sentiment dictionary. The main objective of this work is to demonstrate that the Appraisal framework and Sentiment analysis can successfully support each other. The additional consideration that this has been done not only for English, but in parallel for Italian and Russian (and as one of the first applications of the Appraisal Framework in these languages) and for different text types, makes the research unique. Moreover, because the methodology used to compare a variety of linguistic features (morphological, grammatical, lexical, syntactical) at work in sentiment analysis has been applied to three languages belonging to different families (Germanic, Romance and Slavonic), it is expected to be generalizable to other languages. As far as the practical applications are concerned, the automatic system could be used in any field in which written opinions need to be analysed. In the meanwhile, the new individual resources such as the annotated corpora and the Maltparser models for Italian and Russian have been made publicly available.

The research aimed to investigate the process and the product of interpreter's self-reflection defining linguistic and non-linguistic strategies of consecutive interpreting. The work consists of three parts. The first part expounds on models and theories of interpreting process. The second part of the work deals with the phenomenon of consecutive interpreting, the processes involved in it and self-reflection as a tool for improvement of one's skills. In the third part of this work the procedure and the results of reflective analysis are provided. The empirical part of the research revealed that students thinking was oriented not only towards strategies but also towards knowledge and abilities, mistakes and their reasons, and self-assessment. student interpreters most often use compensation strategies, in particular skipping and non-linguistic strategies only accompany linguistic ones.

Analizės metu išaiškėjo, kad vertimo studentų mąstymas nukreiptas ne tik į strategijas bet ir į žinias,gebėjimus, klaidas, jų priežastis bei savianalizę. Dažniausiai naudotos kompensacinės strategijos. Ne lingvistinės strategijos tik akomponuoja lingvistinėms strategijoms.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the poetics of editing in the films and multimedia works of Chris Marker. From his first essay films of the 1950s to his 1998 CD-ROM Immemory, the director’s work has attracted critical attention for its beauty and originality of expression. Much existing analysis engages with this work in terms of its subject matter and themes and their relationship with its associational, rather than linear, narrative form, with relatively little focus on the stylistics of Marker’s editing. While questions of the director’s thematic concerns also arise in my study, I argue that Marker’s contribution to cinema and the visual arts cannot be fully appreciated without a systematic understanding of his stylistics—his expressive use of cinematic forms and patterns. In developing such an understanding, this thesis utilises the work of a number of film writers explicitly concerned with the expressive use of cinematic space and time. From Andr?? Bazin, I take the idea of rapprochement to mean the way the comparison between two juxtaposed events or images suggests or expresses the meaning of their juxtaposition. From Jean-Andr?? Fieschi, I draw on the idea that the dialectical interaction of the plastic, formal and narrative elements of a film gives meaning to its cinematic space and time. My approach synthesises and builds upon both ideas for its account of the stylistics of Marker’s work. Starting with a preliminary analysis of one cinematic comparison in The Case of the Grinning Cat (2004), I then consider Marker’s exploration of the imaginative potential of a single image sequence in The Last Bolshevik (1993). After this, I explore examples of the stylistic figure of rapprochement in Letter from Siberia (1958), and the stylistic figure of transformation in Sunless (1982). The thesis then studies articulations of rapprochement and transformation in the museum installations Zapping Zone: Proposals for an Imaginary Television (1991), Silent Movie (1995) and the CD-ROM Immemory.

Abstract:
Although Louis Moreau Gottschalk's works are not generally recognized as being exceptionally significant in the development of musical style, they do serve as a link between the music of Frederic Chopin and that of Charles Ives. Certain stylistic characteristics of Chopin are seen in many of Gottschalk's works, especially those which incorporate "Scherzo" and "Mazurka" passages. Simultaneously, Gottschalk's concept of using popular tunes as prominent melodies and themes was later expanded by Charles Ives. Gottschalk's works include some of America's first experimentations with form through utilization and expansion of the basic form of ABA Coda. Through his use of varied ABA form with repeated and parallel passages, Gottschalk developed his particular style of phrasing, texture, and rhythm, all of which figure prominently in his works. Four pieces are examined with these concepts as the basis for analysis.

Abstract:
This thesis is a stylistic study of the prehistoric art record from the Northwest Coast of North America. Its purpose is three-fold: to describe the spatial and temporal variation in the stylistic attributes of prehistoric art; to evaluate theories on the evolution of the Northwest Coast art tradition; and to comment on the possible factors behind variation in the prehistoric art record. This study examines stylistic attributes related to representational imagery, concentrating on five variables: decorated forms, carving techniques, design elements, design principles, and motifs. The core sample consists of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic images from dated archaeological contexts; a total of 242 artifacts from 58 sites are examined. The material is presented in chronological order corresponding to the Gulf of Georgia prehistoric cultural sequence. The major finding of this study is that by the end of the Locarno Beach phase or the beginning of the Marpole phase the essential character of the Northwest Coast art style had developed. There are new developments in the late period, but the evidence presented suggests a previously undocumented stylistic continuity from the late Locarno Beach phase to historic Coast Salish art with no decline in quality or productivity. This study indicates that, as far back as the record extends, three-dimensional, naturalistic forms and two-dimensional incising and engraving techniques have equal antiquity. From the Locarno Beach phase onward the flat, engraved style and the three-dimensional sculpture style developed together; the formline concept developed very early out of the raised, positive lines created by deep engraving in antler.

Abstract:
Composer Tom Flaherty (b. 1950) received a 2016 Grammy award nomination for his piece Airdancing for Toy Piano, Piano and Electronics (2013) in the category of Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. He has also received numerous grants, prizes, awards, and residencies from organizations including the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Music Center. His most recognized work for clarinet is Three Pieces for Clarinet (1982), which won the Delius Composition Contest in 1985 and is included on Eric Mandat’s 1991 album, The Extended Clarinet. Even though Flaherty has received recognition for Three Pieces, his clarinet works as a whole are rarely performed today. His two works for clarinet and piano, Diversion (1985) and Scherzo (1995), remain unknown in the clarinet repertoire. Furthermore, Diversion has been available only in manuscript. Because very little information about Flaherty and his works for clarinet exists, this dissertation provides a stylistic analysis of Three Pieces, Diversion, and Scherzo, and discusses the performance implications of that analysis. Also included in the dissertation is a performance edition of Diversion and the transcription of my interview with the composer. Flaherty’s compositions for clarinet are technically and musically demanding. One of the most challenging aspects of these works is the way Flaherty manipulates pulse. Rhythmic complexity also tends to obscure the listener’s perception of steady pulse and metrical consistency. In each of these works for clarinet, three compositional elements work together to clarify form: melodic contour, intervallic emphasis, and rhythmic devices. This analysis identifies significant musical features that impact form and provides a methodological approach for musical interpretation. It also provides musicians with useful tools to perform these works with musical conviction, which in turn may bring recognition to Flaherty’s lesser-known works, hopefully making them a part of standard contemporary clarinet repertoire.

Modern search engines have several data sources available to users, e.g. Newssearch, Image search and Video search. When a user enters a query in a searchengine, it is up to the user to choose a different source than the normal web search.On average, a user will only consider the first few occurrences in a search result anddo so in a few seconds. It would therefore be beneficial to the user experienceif the user did not have to limit the sources manually to refine a search.This project will evaluate different machine learning methods to classify relevantsources to a query. The goal of this is having an automated learning system thattakes some labeled input and uses this to help inform or direct the user to therelevant source.The project will take advantage of a Yahoo! product; Yahoo! Query LinguistAnalysis Service (abbreviated QLAS from now on and through the document). Thegoal is to incorporate semantic data from QLAS into the learning system. Thisshould augment the amount of information available to the learning system, andimprove its performance. It is not clear how this semantic data could be combinedwith the training data and incorporated in the learning system. A substantial partof the project will be to explore this.This project was done in cooperation with Yahoo! Technologies Norway AS (YTN).YTN develops Vespa, a search engine platform that has the possibility to searchfrom multiple sources. YTN is interested in researching the field of learning sourcerelevance to improve the search experience in Yahoo services. YTN is also interestedin researching ways data from QLAS could be used by Vespa to enable sourcerelevance classification when Vespa is used in a multiple-index setup.

The present study has attempted the analysis of public discourse and its moral expectations through metaphor at a contrastive level in the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics. The study deals with the identification of morality models in public discourse in English and Lithuanian. The materials of the study consist of analytical political articles extracted from the online archives of two following websites: (1) www.economist.com, (2) www.politika.lt. The collected data amounts to 415, 670 words in total. Three methods of analysis were applied to the collected data: qualitative, quantitative and contrastive. The analysis reveals that political affairs in both cultures are framed by the same conceptual metaphors. The structural composition of the conceptual metaphors has been examined in terms of the following thirteen SOURCE domains: MOTION, RELATIONSHIP, STRENGTH, HEALTH, SPORTS, WAR, ESSENCE, BUSINESS, DIRT, SENSES, WHOLENESS, THEATRE, and ANIMALS. The cross-mapping between SOURCE domains and TARGET domains is held by different epistemic correspondences, which leads to the variability of MORALITY models across the two languages, i.e. English and Lithuanian. Ši disertacija – tai kontrastyvinio pobūdžio lingvistinis darbas, kurio tyrimų objektas yra viešasis anglų ir lietuvių kalbų diskursas politine tema. Darbo tikslas – nustatyti, kokiais moralės modeliais vadovaujamasi Didžiosios Britanijos ir Lietuvos viešajame diskurse politine tematika, remiantis metaforos analize. Moksliniam tyrimui buvo renkami analitiniai straipsniai, kuriuose aprašomi Lietuvos (www.politika.lt) ir Didžiosios Britanijos (www.economist.com) politiniai įvykiai ketverių (Britanijos atveju) ir dvejų (Lietuvos atveju) metų laikotarpiu. Visame sinchroniniame tyrime taikomas trianguliacijos metodas, leidžiantis ištirti metaforos raišką įvairiais aspektais, derinant kokybinius (aprašomąjį, analitinį ir kognityvinį) tyrimus su kiekybiniu tyrimu. Buvo nustatyta trylika universalių metaforų: JUDĖJIMAS, JĖGA, KARAS, GYVŪNAI, SANDARA, JUSLĖS, VISUMA, SPORTAS, SVEIKATA, SANTYKIAI, PURVAS, VERSLAS ir TEATRAS. Gretinamoji analizė rodo, kad anglų kalbos metaforos skiriasi nuo lietuvių kalbos metaforų savo epistemine sandara. The value of automated sentiment analysis systems is increasing with the vast amount of consumer-generated content, allowing researchers to analyze the information readily available on the World Wide Web. Much research has been done in the field of sentiment analysis, which has improved the accuracy of sentiment analysis systems. But sentiment analysis is a challenging problem, and there are many potential areas for improvement. In this thesis, we analyze two linguistic rules, and propose algorithms for these rules to be applied in sentiment analysis systems. The first rule is regarding how a sentiment analysis system can recognize and apply the semantic orientation of opinion headings in product reviews to features discussed in the review. The second rule we propose allows the sentiment analysis system to recognize informal forms of words used in analyzed documents. Additionally, we analyze the effects of spelling mistakes in text being analyzed by sentiment analysis systems.

Fitness relates to several life aspects, such as health and exercise. Because of its vast popularity, it is often referred to as a ‘fitness trend’ where the body has a central role. Due to technological advances, fitness has found its way into mobile applications and Social Network Sites (SNSs), prompting the linguistic analysis of these environments. This study investigates how female fitness is discussed by female personal trainers (PTs) online. A mixed approach of quantitative methodology (Corpus Linguistics) and qualitative textual analysis (Discourse Analysis) was adopted. Following Baker’s corpus-driven approach (2006), a specialised corpus was compiled with a total of 440 posts (51,779 tokens) from the Instagram accounts of three female professional PTs. Various patterns were presented under four themes: mind and body, physical strength, empowerment, and the FITNESS IS A JOURNEY metaphor. The most salient patterns discussed were health, aesthetics, weight-loss, and body-representation. There was strong evidence of other trends (‘fitspiration’, ‘HAES’, and ‘body positivity’) which promote a positive body image and strength (physical and mental) as a health indicator. In sum, the findings provide a female PT’s perspective on fitness and show how female fitness is promoted by encouraging positive narratives around fitness, the body and ourselves.
