This thesis explores the relationship between situational contexts and the linguistic and stylistic features of politicized language within the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by M.A.K. Halliday and others. The main area of research chosen is the wartime discourse of Japanese journalism during the Second World War. The research demonstrates the existence of a wartime register (as representation of real war) and characterizes its major stylistic and linguistic features. The secondary area chosen for the purpose of contrastive analysis is peacetime discourse concerning international conflict, (1) the Olympic Games and (2) whaling. In wartime discourse, journalism not only plays a significant role in maintaining public morale but is an active participant in the construction of the war effort. In the presentation of news, journalistic reports implicitly reconstruct reality by foregrounding death as sacrifice, glorious, and noble, the enemy as weak, and by obscuring a threatening situation by backgrounding defeats and losses. This reconstruction has the intention to regulate and control the ideas and behaviour of people, and to form a strong sense of solidarity in the nation. For this function, linguistic resources are exploited to structure, transform and sometimes mask 'reality' so that newly created discourse can articulate and legitimize new orders of reality which will meet the demands of a particular social situation such as consolidating the power of the state to wage war. Journalism in peacetime discourse, on the other hand, is not harnessed to a war effort and, thus, the use of linguistic devices to foreground and background news events is not an instrument of state power in an open society. The theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics is utilized in this research to provide an illustration and examination of the range and complexity of various linguistic and stylistic devices used in journalistic discourse.

The principal objective of this study was to explore what rhetorical strategies and stylistic devices Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and Barack Obama use in their political speeches and how these devices help them to gain the audience’s attention and render the message. The speeches of the two Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and B. Obama were analyzed in order to highlight the patterns of the usage of rhetorical strategies and to investigate the stylistic devices which are aimed at making speech more emphatic, expressive and persuasive. The method chosen for the study was content analysis including generalization and evaluation of the results. The results of the research showed a significant contribution of stylistic means to persuade the listeners on an emotional level or even to manipulate them. The next step of the study must be conducted to determine stylistic means which can influence rhythmical feature of the speech.<br>Magistro darbo tikslas- išryškinti retorinių strategijų modelius, ištirti stilistines priemones, kurios yra naudojamos prezidentų Dalios Grybauskaitės ir Barako Obamos politinėse kalbose ir kaip jos padeda įgyti auditorijos palankumą, iškelti svarbias problemas ir kartu įtikinti visuomenę savo idėjomis emociškai manipuliuojant. Analizuojant kalbas buvo atliktos lyginamoji, turinio, diskurso, taip pat apibendrinimo ir vertinimo analizės. Gauti rezultatai patvirtina, kad prezidentai, siekdami savo tikslų per politinę retoriką, bando manipuliuoti auditorijos įsitikinimais ir taip paveikti visuomenės veiksmus. Kitas žingsnis turėtų būti atliekamas siekiant nustatyti tas stilistines priemones naudojamas kalbose, kurios turi įtakos kalbos ritmiškumui.

Decision-making is an active field of research. Specifically, in recent times, a lot of contributions have been presented on decision-making under linguistic assessments. To tackle this kind of processes, hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets have been introduced to grasp the uncertainty inherent in human reasoning when expressing preferences. This thesis introduces an extension of the set of hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets to capture differences between non-compatible assessments. Based on this extension, a distance between linguistic assessments is defined to quantify differences between several opinions. This distance is used in turn to present a representative opinion from a group in a decision-making process. In addition, different consensus measures are introduced to determine the level of agreement or disagreement within a decision-making group and are used to define a decision maker’s profile to keep track of their dissension with respect to the group as well as their level of hesitancy. Furthermore, with the aim of allowing decision makers to choose the linguistic terms that they feel more comfortable with, the concept of free double hierarchy hesitant fuzzy linguistic term set is developed in this thesis. Finally, a new approach of the TOPSIS methodology for processes in which the assessments are given by means of free double hierarchy hesitant fuzzy information is presented to rank alternatives under these circumstances.

Based on the premise that modernity’s understanding of the linguistic sign has a long
history dating back to ancient Greece when the linguistic mediation of knowledge preoccupied
thinkers like Parmenides and Plato, this dissertation synthesizes contemporary post-structuralist
and rhetorical understandings of language with like-minded findings of other fields of language
study. It sees post-structuralist and deconstructive understandings of language as being
congruent with the long tradition of rhetorical theory and the infamous linguistic turn in
philosophy, that was initiated by the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, as a turn away from the
actual phenomena of language towards an idealization of it. Nevertheless the thesis discovers
recent findings by some of the beneficiaries of the “philosophy of language” that corroborate
rhetorical theory’s insights.
Inspired by both Derrida and Plato, this dissertation presents a rhetorical-deconstructive
image of language that, recalling the root of the term skopevw (‘I look,’ ‘behold,’
‘contemplate’), I characterize as sceptical. This study follows the theoretical matrix of de Man,
Fish, Culler and Barbara Johnson, who are, of course, themselves following Derrida. It has a
holistic attitude to language characteristic of the Bakhtin/Volsohinov approach, drawing insights
from classical and contemporary rhetorical theory, post-structuralist theory, findings of systemic
functional grammar, recent work in cognitive science and psychology on affect and language
use, the scholarship of reported speech, and the ostensive-inferential theory of communication
called Relevance. This cross border work in intellectual history, language theory and stylistics
examines the interstices of theory and style in the work of figures such as Plato, Aristotle,
Bacon, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Voloshinov, Bakhtin and Derrida. Sperber and Wilson,
Scholars of Reported Speech and Halliday are central to its findings; the thinking of William
James and Silvan Tomkins play supporting roles. It positions Plato as the founder of rhetorical
theory and studies the voices of Plato and Derrida as language theorists. I examine both how
Plato and Derrida talk about language and what theories of language underlie their styles,
determining finally that their sceptical-rhetorical theories prompt their ironic-conversational
stylistics.

This thesis examines what roles linguistic, stylistic and sociocultural factors play in the popularity of contemporary Chinese-English bilingual codeswitching songs released between the years of 2004 and 2010, making a case study of the urban youth audience of Shanghai. It is significant as it is the first large scale study into Chinese-English songs that has looked at all of these three factors: linguistic, stylistic and sociocultural, but also because it compares the findings in these three areas from corpus analysis with an audience study.
A corpus of 150 songs from popular codeswitching performers was collected, and was analysed individually in relation to the linguistic, stylistic and sociocultural factors with regard to features that may enhance the popularity of these songs. To this was added an audience study based on fieldwork in Shanghai which included participant observation and data collection from online surveys and individual interviews.
First a linguistic analysis was done on syntactic grounds based on the Myers-Scotton 1993 Classic MLF (Matrix Language Frame) model, and this was followed by an analysis of the metaphorical functions of these songs following general pragmatic theories of Gumperz (1982). A stylistic analysis was then done on the corpus, using theories of literary stylistics from Leech (1969) and the stylistic findings of recent codeswitching researchers. This stylistic section also examined modes of language use after Hymes. The sociocultural aspects within the songs were examined using a social anthropological framework, and used research in the East Asian setting by Gao Liwei (2007) and Yang Mei-hui (1997) on identity formation, as well as the Accommodation Theory of Giles and Smith (1979), and other research relevant to codeswitching in the East Asian pop culture context, such as J. Lee (2004, 2006). Data collection was also carried out based on Hymes’ (1971) ethnographical techniques, and Blom and Gumperz’s (1972) participant observation.
The findings from each of the factors were discussed in relation to the audience study and the results show that:
1) These codeswitching songs are both a reflection of the singers’ and audiences’ need to present a particular identity, negotiated within the particular expectations of music, genre and location.
2) Chinese-English codeswitching songs are a reflection of the high levels of English codeswitching in Shanghai, Chinese, and also wider East Asian popular culture, and reflect a growing bilingual or multilingual identity in wider East Asia.
3) The English within the Chinese-English codeswitching songs is localised to a Southern Chinese, almost a Shanghai context.
4) The uses to which codeswitching is put, or how codeswitching appears in songs, depends on many factors, and so it is difficult to clearly define the functions, stylistic techniques, or sociocultural purposes of codeswitching in songs consistently across different genres, chronological periods (due to changes in language use over time), or between cultures. Despite this, it is hoped that the number of unique findings from the corpus analysis and the discussion in this study could enlighten or stimulate future studies examining codeswitching in songs.

This study attempts to shed light on the efficacy of crowdsourcing as a means of translating web content in Canada. Within, we seek to explore and understand if a model can be created that can estimate the effectiveness of crowdsourced translation as a means of bridging the Canadian Linguistic Digital Divide. To test our hypotheses and models, we use structural equation modeling techniques coupled with confidence intervals for comparing experimental crowdsourced translation to both professional and machine translation baselines. Furthermore, we explore a variety of factors which influence the quality of the experimental translations, how those translations performed in the context of their source text, and the ways in which the views of the quality of the experimental translations were measured before and after participants were made aware of how the experimental translations were created.

Nuo žiniasklaidos pasirenkamos kalbinės raiškos priklauso jos vartotojų kalbinė raiška. Žurnalo kalbinės raiškos savitumą lemia taisyklingi ir netaisyklingi kalbos vienetai. Taisyklingos žurnalo stiliaus priemonės: 1) vediniai; 2) leksiniai sinonimai; 3) sintaksiniai sinonimai; 4) stiliaus figūros – leksinės semantinės, sintaksinės. Deminutyvai – stilistiškai žymėtieji darybiniai vediniai, turintys ne tik maloninį, bet pajuokiamąjį, pašiepiamąjį atspalvį. Populiariausia žurnalo deminutyvų priesaga – -ukas, (-ė). Dažniausiai vartojamos semantinės figūros – metaforos ir metonimijos. Taisyklingos kalbinės raiškos priemonės analizuojamos pragmatinės lingvistikos požiūriu. Netaisyklinga žurnalo kalbinė raiška: 1) barbarizmai – nevartotinos naujosios svetimybės; 2) barbarizmai – neteiktinos svetimybės ir jų dariniai; 3) daliniai barbarizmai – hibridai; 4) netaisyklingi naujadarai; 5) žargonybės. Žurnale daug slavų, anglų kilmės barbarizmų. Vakarų kalbų skoliniai plinta kartu su naujomis technologijomis, prekėmis, paslaugomis. Barbarizmai tiriami semantinės ir funkcinės analizės metodu, keičiami lietuvių kalboje tinkamais vartoti žodžiais. Svarbi žiniasklaidos vadovų nuostata, susijusi su jų pačių kalbos kultūra.<br>Linguistic expression used by the media influences the linguistic expression of its users. The peculiarities of the linguistic expression used by the media are determined by correct and incorrect units of the language. Correct stylistic means used in the magazine: 1) derivedes; 2) lexical synonyms; 3) syntactical synonyms; 4) stylistic devices – lexical semantic and syntactical. Diminutives – stylistically marked derivedes used to convey not only a degree of endearment but also irony and mockery. The most common suffix of diminutives in the magazine is -ukas, (-ė). The most commonly used semantic devices are metaphor and metonymy. The correct means of linguistic expression are analysed in terms of pragmatic linguistics. Incorrect linguistic expression used in the magazine: 1) barbarisms – unacceptable new loanwords; 2) barbarisms – non-recommended loanwords and their derivatives; 3) partial barbarisms – hybrid words; 4) incorrect neologisms; 5) slang. Barbarisms used in the magazine are mainly of Slavic and English origin. The borrowings from Western languages have spread together with the new technologies, products and services. Barbarisms are examined using the method of semantic and functional analysis and are replaced with appropriate Lithuanian words. The attitude of the media leaders towards their own language culture is also a significant factor.

As we all know the classical set theory has a deep-rooted influence in the traditional mathematics. According to the two-valued logic, an element can belong to a set or cannot. In the former case, the element’s membership degree will be assigned to one, whereas in the latter case it takes the zero value. With other words, a feeling of imprecision or fuzziness in the two-valued logic does not exist. With the rapid development of science and technology, more and more scientists have gradually come to realize the vital importance of the multi-valued logic. Thus, in 1965, Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh from Berkeley University put forward the concept of a fuzzy set. In less than 60 years, people became more and more familiar with fuzzy set theory. The theory of fuzzy sets has been turned to be a favor applied to many fields. The study aims to apply some classical and extensional methods of fuzzy set theory in life expectancy and treatment prognoses for cancer patients. The research is based on real-life problems encountered in clinical works by physicians. From the introductory items of the fuzzy set theory to the medical applications, a collection of detailed analysis of fuzzy set theory and its extensions are presented in the thesis. Concretely speaking, the Mamdani fuzzy control systems and the Sugeno controller have been applied to predict the survival length of gastric cancer patients. In order to keep the gastric cancer patients, already examined, away from the unnecessary suffering from surgical operation, the fuzzy c-means clustering analysis has been adopted to investigate the possibilities for operation contra to nonoperation. Furthermore, the approach of point set approximation has been adopted to estimate the operation possibilities against to nonoperation for an arbitrary gastric cancer patient. In addition, in the domain of multi-expert decision-making, the probabilistic model, the model of 2-tuple linguistic representations and the hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets (HFLTS) have been utilized to select the most consensual treatment scheme(s) for two separate prostate cancer patients. The obtained results have supplied the physicians with reliable and helpful information. Therefore, the research work can be seen as the mathematical complements to the physicians’ queries.

Lietuviškų ir britiškų reklaminių šūkių kalbinių poveikio priemonių ir nacionalinio lietuvių ir britų charakterio atspindžio analizei reklaminiuose šūkiuose atlikti buvo surinkti 105 lietuviški ir 95 britiški reklaminiai šūkiai. Tyrimas atliktas naudojant kokybinį, kiekybinį ir gretinamąjį metodus, remiantis reklamos teorija, retorinėmis poveikio priemonėmis ir lietuvių ir britų kultūrų skirtumais, atsižvelgiant į nacionalinį tautų charakterį. Tyrimo rezultatai atskleidžia, kad lietuviai fonetinių, leksinių ir sintaksinių stiliaus figūrų reklaminiuose šūkiuose vartoja kur kas gausiau nei britai ir nevengia viename reklaminiame šūkyje pavartoti kelių skirtingų stiliaus figūrų. Reklaminiuose šūkiuose lietuviai akcentuoja tautiškumą, meilę gamtai, šeimą, sveikatą ir meilę maistui, o britai – tautiškumą, meilę gamtai, sveiką gyvenimo būdą, maistą ir pagarbą tradicijoms.<br>The aim of the present paper was to analyze the dominant linguistic power means in the Lithuanian and British slogans and to determine how the Lithuanian and British national character is reflected in slogans. To reveal the main differences and similarities of the linguistic power means in the Lithuanian and British slogans 105 Lithuanian and 95 British slogans were collected. All the slogans were analzysed phonetically, lexically and syntactically. To carry out the research qualitative, quantitative and the contrastive analysis methods were used. The research was based on the advertising theory, rethorical power means and the theory of the Lithuanian and British national character.The research revealed that Lithuanians use much more phonetical, lexical and syntactical means in slogans than the British and they do not avoid to use a few different stylistic means in a slogan. Furthermore, Lithuanians are inclined to advertise nationality, love to nature, family, health and love to food and the British tend to advertise nationality, love to nature, healthy lifestyle, food and respect to traditions.

Previous issue date: 2013-08-02<br>In this dissertation, based on two theoretical frameworks, American functionalism and variationist sociolinguistics, I take as subject the sequence connectors E and A?, which has the grammatical function of indicating retroactive-propeller sequenciation of information. I analyze the variable use of these connectors in texts written by students from two public schools in the city of Natal, RN, attending at the time of data collection (the year 2012), two distinct levels of basic education: the sixth and the ninth year. The students who contributed to this research wrote, as part of their activities in the classroom, texts of two narrative genres: narrative of personal experience (non-fictional) and short story (fictional). In addition, these students and their Portuguese teachers answered a test of linguistic attitude in which they gave their opinions regarding the appropriateness of the use of connectors E and A? in contexts of speech and writing marked by distinct degrees of formality. The results obtained by means of quantitative analysis showed different tendencies of linguistic, social and stylistic distribution of connectors E and A? in the narrative texts written by the students. I related these results to the action of two principles: the principle of persistence, linked to the process of change by grammaticalization, and the principle of stylistic markedness. Besides, I took into account the answers provided by students and teachers to the test of linguistic attitude for refine the interpretation of the results<br>Nesta disserta??o, apoiando-me em dois referenciais te?ricos, o do funcionalismo lingu?stico de vertente norte-americana e o da sociolingu?stica variacionista, tomo como objeto de estudo os conectores sequenciadores E e A?, que atuam na fun??o gramatical de indica??o de sequencia??o retroativo-propulsora de informa??es. Analiso o uso vari?vel desses conectores em textos escritos por alunos de duas escolas da rede p?blica da cidade de Natal-RN, que cursavam, ? ?poca da coleta de dados (o ano de 2012), duas s?ries distintas do ensino fundamental: o sexto e o nono ano. Os alunos que contribu?ram para a realiza??o desta pesquisa escreveram, como parte de suas atividades em sala de aula, textos de dois g?neros da esfera narrativa: narrativa de experi?ncia pessoal (de car?ter n?o ficcional) e conto (de car?ter ficcional). Previous issue date: 2015-07-20<br>CAPES<br>This paper aims to present a pedagogical intervention proposal for the study of variable rule verbal agreement of the 1st person plural in the 6th grade of Elementary School, based on the diagnosis done in 2014, in a public school of Duque de Caxias. Three aspects were taken into consideration in the composition of this diagnosis: (1) a study based on the Labovian Variationist Sociolinguistic (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 1968) concerning the verbal agreement of the 1st person plural produced by 6th graders, (2) a survey carried out through a questionnaire of the beliefs and attitudes of Portuguese teachers of the school as to the use and study of this linguistic phenomenon and (3) an analysis of the pedagogical approach proposed by the coursebook chosen by the school. The results of the sociolinguistic study showed a considerable variation of the 1st person plural agreement in the student?s speaking and writing. The answers to the beliefs and attitudes test indicated that the pedagogical action around this variable phenomenon has concentrated on correction and reading practices. The analyzed coursebook does not consider the verbal agreement phenomenon explicitly, but presents an extensive grammatical study of verbs from which it can be concluded that it is up to the school teaching the explicit realization of bending 1st person plural. In developing the proposal itself, the theoretical methodological foundation was based on association between the Model of Continuous (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2004), with an emphasis on the continuous stylistic monitoring and didactic-pedagogic approach of the collaborative apprenticeship (BEHRENS, 2013).<br>Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma proposta de interven??o pedag?gica para o estudo da regra vari?vel de concord?ncia verbal de 1? pessoa do plural no 6? ano do Ensino Fundamental, elaborada a partir do diagn?stico realizado no ano de 2014, em uma escola da Rede Municipal de Duque de Caxias. Les écrivains d’avant-garde des années 1970 (P. Guyotat, D. Roche, P. Sollers, C. Prigent...), souvent qualifiés d’illisibles, présentent de nombreux points communs tant dans leur pratique stylistique que dans leurs conceptions du langage. Si le « textualisme » de la seconde moitié des années 1960 ainsi que le « post-modernisme » du début des années 1980 sont bien connus, les expérimentations verbales de 1965-1985 sont peu étudiées dans leur spécificité et leur cohérence. Ce travail, qui s’appuie sur un corpus d’auteurs gravitant autour de trois revues (Tel Quel, Change et TXT) et de textes aussi bien théoriques que littéraires, entend donc prouver la consistance d’une langue littéraire propre à l’avant-garde d’une période que l’on pourrait qualifier de « post-structuraliste », héritant du structuralisme mais le déplaçant vers des enjeux plus littéraires. Cette langue littéraire ne saurait être envisagée sans être mise en relation avec l’imaginaire linguistique de l’époque – une pensée de la langue – dont les principales caractéristiques sont d’une part la conscience du caractère réducteur de la langue nationale et d’autre part la remise en question de la linguistique saussurienne. L’obscurité des textes, la déconstruction de la syntaxe et du lexique, la multiplication des néologismes ou des jeux de mots qui, en apparence, portent atteinte à la langue française, illustrent en réalité une volonté de panser la langue, de l’enrichir par la mise en valeur du signifiant, par l’emprunt aux langues étrangères ou encore par le rythme. L’œuvre de Guyotat, en particulier, condense ces enjeux, articulant un imaginaire de la langue et un travail langagier tout à fait singuliers<br>The Francophone avant-garde writers from the 1970s (P. Guyotat, D. Roche, P. Sollers, C. Prigent...), often said to be unreadable, are quite similar both in their stylistical praxis and in their conception of language. If the “textualism” from the late 1960s and the “post-modernism” of the early 1980s are rather well-known, the verbal experimentations of the 1965-1985 period have not been much studied as a specific and coherent whole. This work, based on a corpus of authors linked to three journals (Tel Quel, Change and TXT) and on literary as well as theoretical texts, wishes to prove the consistency of the specific literary language shared by the avant-garde of a time that could be labelled “post-structuralist”, i.e. inheriting from structuralism but focusing more on literary issues. This literary language cannot be analyzed without taking into account the linguistic imaginary of the time, i.e. how language was thought. That linguistic imaginary is mainly characterized by a consciousness of how reductive the national language is and by questioning Saussure's linguistics. The obscure texts, the deconstructed syntax and lexicon, the multiple neologisms and puns, which seem to violate the French language, actually illustrate a desire to improve the language (and not only to think it), to enrich it by emphasizing the signifier through borrowed foreign words or rhythms. La série adjectivale est une structure bien connue des lecteurs de Proust. La Recherche comprend plus de trois mille séries adjectivales ; elles combinent deux, trois, jusqu’à dix-sept adjectifs. Les variations sémantiques et syntaxiques sont nombreuses entre les séries. Devons-nous parler de série adjectivale ou de séries, au pluriel ? Quel point commun ont toutes ces séries entre elles ? Peut-on dire que la série adjectivale est une figure de style ?Notre but sera de montrer comment s’articulent ces deux phénomènes stylistiques qui font de la série adjectivale une microstructure complexe : l’effet artiste et le fait de vision. Notre thèse consiste à démontrer que la série adjectivale est un phénomène stylistique, un fait qui ne peut se comprendre qu’en analysant le fonctionnement cognitif d’une vision du monde. Dans une première partie nous analysons la série adjectivale comme un fait de langue, une syntaxe complexe ; dans une seconde partie, nous étudions les effets stylistiques produits par la série adjectivale ; puis nous démontrons que le fait syntaxique est l’expression d’un rapport phénoménologique entre le narrateur et le monde qui l’entoure<br>Adjectival series are a well-known by Proust’s readers. We find more than three thousand adjectival series in In Search of the Lost time ; some combine two, three, four adjectives, until seveteen adjectives ; we notice semantical variations and syntactical differences. Should we speak about adjectival series or serie ? What do these series have in common ? Is the adjectival series a stylistic figure ? We want to prove that the adjectival serie is part of these two both stylistics phenomenons which are artistical writting effects and vision of the world. We analyse this stylistic fact according to psychomecanical linguistic, as the expression of an original way to feel. In the first part of research we will show that the adjectival serie is a complex syntactic fact ; in the second part we analyse the adjectival serie as a stylistic effect ; then, we demonstrate that the syntactic fact express a phenomenological link between the narrator and the world

Agatha Christie’s detective novels «Cards on the table» (1936), «Evil Under the Sun»
(1941), «Five Little Pigs» (1942) and «Sparkling Cyanide» (1945).
The main aim of the paper is to define the ways, mechanisms and forms of structuring the characters of murderers’ in Agatha Christie’s detective novels in the light of stylistic devices used.
It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as:
- to systematize the key methodological theses of the research into the genre of the detective novel;
- to define the narrative and stylistic specificity of the detective novel in general and Agatha Christie’s detective novels in particular;
- to outline the gallery of murderes in Agatha Christie’s detective novels;
- to elucidate the main mechanisms of constructing the psychological portrait of a murderer by using phonetical, lexical and grammatical means;
On the basis of the conducted analysis the following conclusion were drawn. Skillfully using phonetic, lexical and grammatical means, Agatha Christie gives a clear and vivid linguistic characterization of her characters. The speech of the characters reflects the level of their education, social status, indicates gender characteristics, and also draws a portrait of a person of a certain age, temperament and psychological composition. Moreover, by analyzing the linguistic behavior of the negative characters, one can determine the peculiarities of their picture of the world and to judge the hierarchy of concepts and values. The reader can visualize the image of the murdere, based on these linguistic cues. It is worth noting that this is a distinctive feature of Christie’s creativity and narrative skill. A. Christie characterizes her murderers indirectly, that is, she allows the reader to from his own ideas of the criminal based on his linguistic behavior. Such a technique allows the author to set off particular characteristics and to create a more colorful, vivid, realistic image of the murderer.

Теоретико-методологічні засади: ключові положення теорії та філософії гумору (Столяр М., Крікман А., Аттардо С. і Раскін В., Томойага А.), а також відтворення гумору в літературі та сіткомах зокрема (Сафонова Є. В., Джакел Дж.). Отримані результати: проведений аналіз продемонстрував, що лексичні засоби відтворення гумористичного ефекту, у порівнянні зі стилістичними, отримали більшу кількість прикладів. Так, результати кількісних підрахунків проілюстрували, що: 1) найпоширенішими лексичними засобами відтворення гумористичного ефекту є сарказм, порівняння, а також гіпербола та іронія, які отримали однакову кількість балів; 2) найпоширенішими стилістичними засобами відтворення гумористичного ефекту є алюзія, гра слів та риторичне питання/вигук/звернення. Техніка панчлайн зустрілася 14 разів, а комічний таймінг –– 5. Аналіз перспективи відтворення гумористичного ефекту шляхом лінгвістичної та нелінгвістичної системи продемонстрував, що лінгвістична система завжди задіяна у створенні комічного ефекту, в той час як нелінгвістична є найменш стабільною.<br>EN : The master’s thesis is devoted to the study of linguistic means of creating a humorous effect in the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”. The main aim of the thesis concerns determining and analyzing linguistic means of creating a humorous effect in the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”. The realization of the aim involves resolving the following objectives: 1) to define the essence of the notion “comical” and to characterize theories of humor; 2) to establish a comical typology and define its functions; 3) to study the linguistic means of creating a humorous effect; 4) to describe the ethnic features of American humor; 5) to define the essence of the notion “sitcom” and to study its link with a polycode discourse; 6) to study the ways of creating a humorous effect in sitcoms based on the recent researches’ analysis; 7) to analyze and characterize linguistic means of creating a humorous effect in the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”. The scientific novelty of the research involves an integrated approach to the analysis of creating a humorous effect in the field of comedy discourse, considering both linguistic means and polycode text aspects. Hence, a considerable number of private observations and conclusions – through analysis of the expressions of contemporary sitcom discourse – have been made. The thesis consists of two chapters: theoretical basis and practical application. Such concepts as “comical”, “sitcom” have been identified and characterized, as well as ethnic features of American humor. Two main linguistic means of a humorous effect reproduction were distinguished: 1) lexical devices –– neologism, occasionalism, 95 metaphor, simile, irony, sarcasm, hyperbole, litotes; 2) stylistic devices –– allusion, antithesis, periphrasis, oxymoron, pun, rhetorical questions/appeals/exclamations, lexical repetition. Moreover, the following humorous techniques were identified: punchline, comic timing, slapstick. 100 English sitcom expressions were selected and analyzed. The results of a comprehensive study have demonstrated the following conclusions: the lexical devices compared to the stylistic ones, hit a higher number of examples. Therefore, the results of quantitative calculations have shown that: 1) the most common lexical humorous devices are sarcasm, simile, as well as hyperbole and irony, which received the same number of points; 2) the most common stylistic devices are allusion, puns and rhetorical questions/appeals/exclamations. The punchline technique was encountered 14 times, and comic timing –– 5. The analysis of polycode aspects has demonstrated that the linguistic system is always involved in creating a humorous effect, while non-linguistic is the least secured. As a result, the underlying tendencies of linguistic means of creating a humorous effect in the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” have been revealed, which means the research has its theoretical and practical values.

The presented paper is dedicated to the creolized English texts.
Subject of research can be defined as linguo-stylistic peculiarities of comics as the genre of modern literature.
The main aim of the paper consists in identifying and comprehensively analyzing linguistic and extralinguistic means in English comics as a visual-graphic text.
It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as:
1) consider the creolized text as a linguo-visual phenomenon;
2) consider comics as a type of creolized text;
3) consider the rules of comics construction;
4) identify the linguistic features of comics.
Comics is a complex work that is formed with the interaction of two source systems – verbal and pictographic. Despite the heterogeneity of its components, it is characterized by a high degree of consistency and purposefulness in presenting information. It was found out that the verbal component in English comics is represented by phonetic (characterized by the transfer of variability of sounds through a kind of graphics through phonosemantic mode or sound recording), lexical (defined by the appropriate selection of tokens, their combination, general tone, figurative means), syntax (simple, complex and inarticulate sentences) and textual levels (dialogue prevails over monologue due to the dynamic unfolding of events in fragments). Extralingual inventory includes font, color, and graphics. The font has linguistic value in the text of the comic, because it is the outer shell of verbal communication. It was found that the typeface or italics can highlight: key ideas of the fragment, the names of the characters, elements with a special emotional color, signs of other alphabets, depicted handwritten messages.<br>UA : Робота викладена на 50 сторінках друкованого тексту. Мета даного дослідження – виявлення та комплексний аналіз мовних та позамовних засобів в англомовному коміксі як візуально-графічному тексті.
Теоретико-методологічні засади: дослідження коміксу як літературного жанру (С. Андреас, Р. В. Вороніна, М. В. Захарова, А. В. Коларькова); з проблем стилістики (І .Р. Гальперін, А. С. Попов, C. V. Garcés,) та питань ролі паралінгвістичних засобів (А. В. Міхєєв, С. І. Дубінін, Л. Макарук, М. Г. Швецова).
Отримані результати. З’ясовано, що мовний компонент в англомовному коміксі представлений на фонетичному (характеризується передачею варіативності звуків за допомогою своєрідної графіки через фоносемантичний модус або звукопис), лексичному (окреслюється відповідним добором лексем, їх поєднанням, загальною тональністю викладу, образними засобами), синтаксичному (перевага простих, складносурядних і нечленованих речень) та текстовому рівнях (діалог переважає над монологом завдяки динамічності розгортання подій у фрагментах).
Екстралінгвальний інвентар охоплює шрифтову гарнітуру, колір та графічний знак. Шрифтова гарнітура має лінгвістичну цінність у тексті коміксу, оскільки вона є зовнішньою оболонкою вербальної комунікації. Виявлено, що шрифтовою гарнітурою чи курсивом можуть виокремлюватися: ключові ідеї фрагмента, імена персонажів, елементи з особливим емотивним забарвленням, знаки інших алфавітів, зображені рукописні повідомлення.

Теоретико-методологічні засади: ключові положення теорії гумору (В. Пропп, А. Бергсон, Ю. Борев та ін.), стилістики (І. Гальперін, І. Арнольд та ін.) та перекладознавства (В. Коптілов, В. Комісаров та ін.).
Отримані результати: було розглянуто підходи до визначення природи комічного та способів його реалізації у художньому тексті, особливості гумору та іронії як видів комічного, лінгвостилістичні засоби творення гумору та іронії у художньому тексті, способи відтворення гумору та іронії у перекладі, запропоновано варіант перекладу українською мовою. Визначено, що продуктивними лінгвостилістичними засобами творення гумору та іронії у романі є: антифразис, антитеза, паралелізм, порівняння, використання лексики інших функціональних стилів. Переклад лексичних стилістичних засобів утворення комічного ефекту вимагає особливої уваги до збереження семантичних аспектів одиниць перекладу, коли ж мова йде про синтаксичні прийоми як основні засоби для вираження гумору у художньому тексті, збереження граматичних структур стає головною стратегією при перекладі таких утворень.<br>EN : The presented paper addresses the analysis of linguistic and stylistic means of creating humor and irony in literary texts.

The author considers the approaches to determining the nature of the comic and the ways of its realization in literary texts, features of humor and irony as types of the comic, linguistic and stylistic means of creating humor and irony in literary texts, ways of reproducing humor and irony in translation in this work. It is determined that the productive linguistic and stylistic means of creating humor and irony in the novel are: antiphrase, antithesis, parallelism, simile, parenthesis and use of vocabulary of other functional styles. The translation of lexical stylistic means of creating a comic effect requires special attention to preserving the semantic aspects of translation units, but when it comes to syntactic techniques as the main means of expressing humor in literary texts, preserving grammatical structures is the main strategy in such cases.

The k central points and the assignment are modified based on the intention of minimizing the measurements. This method has been applied to data analysis and the decision-making problems. Since some decision-making problems have to deal with the data that collected with imprecision attributes, we extend its application capability in this study. The linguistic variable of fuzzy set theory is considered. The k-means method is then modified so that it can handle such kind of data.
For this purpose, we first have to make a deep research about the k-means method to realize the issues encountered by the method and their possible solutions. Second, we study the properties and operations for linguistic variable of fuzzy sets theory. Finally, the k-means method is modified to handle such kind of data and the theoretical issues of complexity and convergence properties are studied also.
Our preliminaryresult indicates the modification of k-means algorithm is feasible. The additional research about the theoretical issues and application of real data is necessary for verifying the proposed approach.

Taking an anthropological perspective, this dissertation focuses on a small segment of the American deaf community that uses Cued Speech by examining the nature of the cuers' linguistic repertoire. Multimodality is at issue for this dissertation. It can affect the ways of speaking or more appropriately, ways of communicating (specifically, signing or cueing). Speech and Cued Speech rely on different modalities by using different sets of articulators. Hearing adults do not learn Cued Speech the same way deaf children do. English-speaking, hearing adult learners can base their articulation of Cued Speech on existing knowledge of their spoken language. However, because deaf children do not have natural access to spoken language phonology aurally, they tend to learn Cued Speech communicatively through day-to-day interactions with family members and deaf cueing peers. I am interested in examining the construct of cuers' linguistic repertoire. Which parts of their linguistic repertoire model after signed languages? Which parts of their linguistic repertoire model after spoken languages? Cuers' phonological, syntactal and lexical repertoire largely depends on several factors including social class, geography, and the repertoire of hearing cuers whom they interacted with on a daily basis. For most deaf cuers, hearing cuers including parents, transliterators and educators serve as a model for the English language. Hearing cuers play a role as unwitting gatekeepers for the maintenance of 'proper' cueing among deaf users. For this dissertation, I seek to study the effects of modality on how cuers manage their linguistic repertoire. The statement of the problem is this: Cued Speech is visual and made with the hands like ASL but is ultimately a code for the English language. The research questions to be examined in this dissertation include how cuers adapt an invented system for their purposes, what adjustments they make to Cued Speech, how Cued Speech interacts with gesture, and what language play in Cued Speech looks like.<br>text

The aim of the study The primary aim of this study was to ascertain whether or not a multiple-choice test can effectively assess English mother-tongue competence. Because the testing of language is at issue, the study was approached from an applied linguistic perspective. 2. The method of investigation 2.1. Uterature study. A review of the literature relating to the following topics was performed: (i) mother-tongue competence; (ii) language skills and in particular, the skills inherent in reading; (iii) the communicative approach to language teaching and testing; (iv) multiple-choice testing; and (v) test validity. 2.2. Empirical research work. Each of the four South African provincial education departments within the Department of Education and Culture: House of Assembly was called upon to compile three traditional English First Language papers for the trial matriculation examinations. A single item bank test of one hundred and fifty pretested multiple-choice questions was compiled for the same examination period. Pupils from the four provinces wrote the traditional papers which were set for their provinces. In other words, the pupils from each province wrote a separate set of traditional papers. In contrast, the same item bank test was written by all 9456 matriculants involved in the project. . 3. Findings The study revealed that the skills inherent in the four language modes of reading, writing, speaking and listening overlap each other to such an extent that it is virtually impossible to separate them for testing purposes. серії фільмів “The Chronicles Of Narnia” з англійської мови на українську та

Теоретико-методологічні засади: ключові положення теорії перекладу
лінгвостилістичних особливостей, їх визначення, приклади. До основних
авторів, чиї матеріали використовувалися у даній роботі відносяться: Рецкер,
Карабан, Коміссаров, Шама, Зорівчак, Виноградов та інші. Були представлені
роботи таких перекладачів: Катерина Доброхотова, Софія Андрухович,
Вікторія Наріжна.
Отримані результати: в процесі дослідження були розглянуті особливості
перекладу лінгвостилістичних прийомів та проаналізовані засоби перекладу.
Найбільш розповсюдженими виявилися такі способи перекладу: калькування,
модуляція або смисловий розвиток, компенсація та антонімічний переклад.
Найменш розповсюдженими засобами перекладу виявилися опущення, та
додавання. Автор роботи надає власні варіанти перекладу у
дослідницькій частині.<br>EN : The presented paper addresses the film translation in the context of fantasy
material based on the example of cult series of films “The Chronicles of Narnia”.
The object of the work can be defined as the original films and translation of
cult series of films “The Chronicles of Narnia”.
The main aim of the paper is to identify linguistic and stylistic features of
English-Russian and English-Ukrainian translation. It determined the
accomplishment of such objectives as:
- elaboration of the translation theory and practice, including definitions and
examples
- studying the structure of represented video materials
Three methods of translation in the cult series of films “The Chronicles of
Narnia” are distinguished: calque, equivalence and antonymous translation. Among
the grammatical transformations such types as outer partitioning and grammatical
replacement are used. The lexical transformations such as transliteration and
transcription are also present. Generalization is used in the context of lexicosemantic transformations.
The scientific novelty of the presented research lies in the translation of
linguistic and stylistic features on the material of the cult series of films "The
Chronicles Of Narnia". Methods of translation of both individual realities and the
whole material are generally revealed.

This research study examines the forensic application of a selection of stylistic and stylometric techniques in a simulated authorship attribution case involving texts on the social networking site, Facebook. Eight participants each submitted 2,000 words of self-authored text from their personal Facebook messages, and one of them submitted an extra 2,000 words to act as the ‘disputed text’. The texts were analysed in terms of the first 1,000 words received and then at the 2,000-word level to determine what effect text length has on the effectiveness of the chosen style markers (keywords, function words, most frequently occurring words, punctuation, use of digitally mediated communication features and spelling). It was found that despite accurately identifying the author of the disputed text at the 1,000-word level, the results were not entirely conclusive but at the 2,000-word level the results were more promising, with certain style markers being particularly effective.<br>Linguistics<br>MA (Linguistics)

Це пов’язується зі структурною різницею між українською та англійською мовами та невдало обраними перекладацькими трансформаціями.<br>EN : The presented paper is dedicated to the analysis of such a topical issue as the linguistic personality in English and Ukrainian children’s literature (case study E.H. Porter’s Novel “Pollyanna”). The object of the work can be defined as the lingual means of representation of linguistic personality in children’s literature of English origin and its Ukrainian translation. The main aim of the thesis is to describe the lingual means of representation of linguistic personality in English children’s literature and its Ukrainian translation. It determines the accomplishment of such objectives as: - give the definition to the term “linguistic personality”; - analyze of different approaches to linguistic personality studies; - set out structural components of linguistic personality; - find lingual means od representation of linguistic personality in English children’s literature and its Ukrainian translation; - describe the changes that occur in linguistic means of representation of linguistic personality when translated in the Ukrainian language. The definition of a “linguistic personality” is offered in the work. There are several approaches to the research of linguistic personality, such as linguistic, cognitive, and linguacultural. Linguistic personality consists of three levels, which are lexical, cognitive, and pragmatic. Lingual means of representation of linguistic personality in English children’s literature include lexical-grammatical and stylistic means. Lexical and grammatical means are represented by the offered lexical units, use of shortenings and tag questions. Exclamations, repetition, and aposiopesis are the components of the stylistic means. Not all of the lingual means of representation of linguistic personality are present in the Ukrainian translation due to the inadequate 71 translation at some levels and/or structural differences between English and Ukrainian languages. The scientific novelty of the present research lies in the attempt to describe the peculiarities of linguistic personality representation in English children’s literature and its Ukrainian translation.

The main aim of the paper consists in analyzing the features of the interpretation of historical texts.

-consider the linguistic and stylistic features of English historical texts;
-establish lexical, grammatical and stylistic features of translation of historical texts on the basis of translation of P. Hammond's work “Richard III the the Bosworth Campaign”.
The historical text has its own characteristic features, in particular, the structure and typology, which makes it possible to distinguish it from other types of text. The present diploma thesis deals with spoken media communication, conducting a stylistic analysis of the language means used in the Hyde Park Civilizace pop-science programme. The thesis focuses on the evaluation of the language means used both by the host and the guests appearing on the show. The research sample consists of a cross-section of nine episodes aired within the first three years of the programme, i.e. 2012-2014. The goal of the thesis is to provide an objective assessment of the spokenness in live discussions on a Czech Television programme. Thus, this specific analysis aims to enhance the language standard of the public media in the Czech Republic. The research part follows up the theoretical part which describes spoken media communication based on the specialist literature.

Запоріжжя : ЗНУ, 2021. 70 с.<br>EN : The work is presented on 70 pages of printed text. The list of references includes 84 sources. In the course of the linguistic and stylistic analysis of the portrait of Julia Lambert, certain features of the portrait of William Somerset Maugham were identified. Having considered the definitions of the portrait, we found out that at first the definition of the portrait was narrow and meant only the appearance of the person being portrayed, and then other features of the character began to be added to the portrait, bringing the portrait closer to creating the image of the character.
In general, the functions of the portrait are almost identical with the functions of the text and are reduced to such a representative or informational function, an appellative or motivating function and an expressive function. And after analyzing Julia's portrait at a hypothetical level, we highlighted that the author uses a description of a certain characteristic instead of using one adjective, and also that the author of the fictional work "Theater" almost does not use the description of Julia's figurative data, separating only with short phrases about what is suitable her data. The author characterizes Julia not as a person, but as a professional actress, for whom life is a game.
At the textual level of the artwork "Theater", we came to the conclusion that Julia's portrait painting is connected with the plot of the work and one cannot consider the plot separately from the portrait painting, or portrait painting separately from the plot. At the extra-textual level of linguistic-stylistic analysis, certain patterns of the artistic work "Theater" with the private life of the author, William Somerset Maugham, were revealed.<br>UA : Робота викладена на 70 сторінках друкованого тексту. Мета дослідження – дослідити, яким чином формується портрет персонажу засобами лінгвостилістики і як це сприяє створенню адекватного перекладу. Відповідно до мети достідження ми ставимо такі задачі:
1) розглянути дефініції портрету та функціональні особливості портрету і з’ясувати, що таке лінгвостилічний аналіз;
2) зробити лінгвостилістичний аналіз портретопису Джулії Ламберт.
У роботі використано загальнонаукові методи дослідження. Методологічну основу дослідження складають праці вчених, які досліджували проблему портретопису (А. Н. Беспалов, Е. А. Ведерніков, В. М. Мініна), тексту ( Л. Ю. Максимов, Ю. М. Лотман) та адекватного перекладу (В. Н. Комісаров).
Практичне значення одержаних результатів. Матеріали дипломного дослідження можуть бути використані під час подальших наукових розробок, у вивченні перекладознавства (теорії і практики перекладу), стилістики, інтерпретації тексту, теорії художнього твору, практики англійської мови.

The diploma thesis deals with the characteristics of the discourse of selected Czech food blogs. On the one hand the food blogs, which are considered here as part of the media content, have common features with other culinary discourses, on the other hand they have their specifics, which are given mainly by their multimodal nature. The theoretical part therefore introduces the culinary discourse, as well as the phenomenon of blogging, which was made possible with the advent of the Internet and web services. The thesis then presents a brief food blogs history and previous foreign research, that dealt with the characteristics of the food blogs language. Qualitative analysis of discourse, which was used for the food blogs analysis in the research part of the thesis, focuses on common language and formal features of food blogs, discourses of individual authors and the most common topics that food blogs contain. The research material was selected based on the results of the last year of the Food blog roku competition. These are contributions from three popular Czech food blogs, which were published on blogs in the first half of 2019. These contributions were subjected to an in-depth analysis, the results of which are subsequently presented in the thesis.

Запоріжжя : ЗНУ, 2021. 66 с.<br>EN : The work is presented on 66 pages of printed text. The list of references includes 95 sources. The presented paper is dedicated to the actualization of such a topical problem as the speech act of the order in the process of functioning of the English-language discourse.
The object of the work can be defined as the speech acts of the order in the texts of English writers.
The main of the paper consists in the attempt to identify the features of actualization of the speech act of the order in the English-language discourse. It determined in the accomplishment of such objectives as:
– profound analysis and systematization of the theoretical foundations
of the theory of speech acts;
– definition of the speech act of the order and its lexico-grammatical
structure;
– identification of the specific communicative units and speech
formulas which are characteristic for the speech act of order;
– identification of the features of the functioning of the speech acts of
the order in discourses.
The definition of the “speech act of the order” is presented in the work.
Comprehensive analysis of the theories of the speech acts and the structure of the speech act of the order along with the review of the English-language texts allowed us to reach the conclusion that the speech act of the order is referred to the type of directives the effectiveness of which is based on the linguistic means of expression, on the social status of communicants, their aims and pragmatic factors in order to achieve the pelrocutionary effect.
The scientific novelty of the presented research lies in the opportunity of the use of the obtained results when teaching English both at the basic and advanced stage.<br>UA : Робота викладена на 66 сторінках друкованого тексту. Перелік посилань включає 95 джерел.
Об'єкт дослідження: мовленнєві акти наказу, зафіксовані в текстах англомовних художніх творів.
Мета роботи: спроба виявити особливості актуалізації мовленнєвого акту наказу в англомовному художньому дискурсі.
Теоретико-методологічні засади: ключові положення теорій мовленнєвих актів (Дж. Остін, Дж. Сьорль, Ч. Пірс, П. Грайс, Дж. Ліч) та дискурс-фрагменти з художніх творів (Ч. Паланік, С. Моем, О. Вайлд, Ш. Бронте, Дж. Болдвін, В. Голдінг, К. Льюїс, Е. Хемінгуей, А. К. Дойл, А. Крісті, Ф. С. Фіцджеральд).
Отримані результати: комплексний аналіз теорії мовленнєвих актів, основних засобів вираження і структур мовленнєвого акту наказу в контексті комунікації та розгляд дискурс-фрагментів з художніх творів дозволив дійти до висновку, що мовленнєвий акт наказу належить до класу директивів, ефективність якого залежить від мовних засобів вираження наказу, соціального статусу комунікантів, їх цілей та прагматичних чинників для досягнення перлокутивного ефекту. Було встановлено, що найбільш широко в мові вживаються непрямі мовленнєві акти, які розглядаються за допомогою стратегій ухилення, вуалювання наказу, прохання та принципу ввічливості, використання яких пояснюється прагненням мовця знизити категоричність висловлювання. Принцип взаємоповаги – основна тенденція розвитку англомовної комунікативної культури.

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of linguistic tools typical for French political discourse. The thesis is based on an analysis of selected political speeches of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. It tries to capture how a change in a specific political situation of a particular author can affect communicative strategies, discursive practices, and then select the linguistic tools due to the addressee in a particular communicative situation and the communicative intention. The first part of the thesis is focused on the rhetoric and stylistics, which contribute to the typological definition of texts falling within the French political discourse. The second part is based on an analysis of three essential political speeches Nicolas Sarkozy.

The voluntary blood donation issue is topical in the Czech Republic since the number of blood donors has not yet reached the number of donors existing in the neighboring countries. Because of this fact the Czech Blood Cross together with transfusion services centers in the Czech Republic and in cooperation with various organizations, e.g. Czech Radio, do their best to obtain new voluntary blood donors via blood donation campaigns. Language of these campaigns is mainly of persuasive character. As such, it is often viewed as a means of white propaganda which stems from factual information and whose aim is to persuade the consumer of the message about the legitimacy of its ideology. White propaganda also helps to build trust which is lately used. In other words, the consumer of the message becomes blood donor. The thesis analyzes persuasive linguistic means of propaganda present in online discourse of the selected campaigns. On the basis of learned facts, the thesis also tries to characterize this discourse type; moreover, it makes suggestions for designing a new blood donation campaign.
