Full text
Abstract:
In recent years there has been an increased interest in the evidential status and use of linguistic intuitions. This volume provides the most recent cutting-edge contributions from linguists and philosophers working on this topic. The volume is organized around two questions that have been at the heart of this debate: the justification question, which asks about a theoretical rationale for using linguistic intuitions as evidence in the study of language, and the methodology question, which asks whether formal methods of gathering intuitions are epistemically and methodologically superior to informal ones. The first part of the volume addresses the justification question and covers a broad range of novel theoretical contributions that either justify or critically evaluate the evidential use of linguistic intuitions. The second part of the volume presents and critically discusses recent developments in the domain of experimental syntax, where the methodology question has been debated. All chapters seek to shed new light on whether and how linguistic intuitions can be used in theorizing about language.

Full text
Abstract:
Linguistic minorities are everywhere, and they are diverse. In this context, linguistic mediation activities – whether translation or interpreting – are key to the social inclusion of any kind of linguistic minority. In most societies autochthonous linguistic minorities coexist with foreignspeaking minorities and people with (or without) disabilities who rely linguistically or medially adapted on texts to access information. The present volume draws on this broad understanding of the concept of linguistic minorities to explore some of the newest developments in the field of translation studies and linguistics. The articles are structured around three main axes: • accessibility of content, especially audiovisual translation • intralingual translation, including initiatives regarding plain language, easy-to-read and easy language • mediation for minorities in a broader sense and language ideologies.

Abstract:
Much work in relevance theory relies on the kinds of method and data familiar to linguistic philosophers: essentially introspection and native speaker intuitions on properties such as truth conditions, truth values, what is said, etc. Recently, however, relevance theorists have been at the forefront of a newly-emerging research field, experimental pragmatics, which aims to apply the empirical techniques of psycholinguistics to questions about utterance interpretation. Over the last few years, this new research methodology has thrown up interesting and sometimes surprising insights into the psychological processes underlying human communication and comprehension, some of which are discussed in this article.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an introduction to the topic of Developmental Linguistics, which tries to understand children’s language acquisition in terms of the mental representations that support linguistic behavior. It offers an overview of the chapters in the volume: these examine specific linguistic domains, exploring the cognitive and linguistic supports for learning, patterns of development in children, and the links between cross-linguistic variation and children’s language development.

Abstract:
The discipline of linguistics in general, and the field of African linguistics in particular, appear to be facing a paradigm shift. There is a strong movement away from established methodologies and theoretical approaches, especially structural linguistics and generativism, and a broad move towards critical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and linguistic anthropology. These developments have encouraged a greater awareness and careful discussion of basic problems of data production in linguistics, as well as the role played by the ideologies of researchers. The volume invites a critical engagement with the history of the discipline, taking into account its deep entanglements with colonial knowledge production. Colonial concepts about language have helped to implement Northern ideas of what counts as knowledge and truth; they have established institutions and rituals of education, and have led to the lasting marginalization of African ways of speaking, codes, and multilingualisms. This volume engages critically with the colonial history of our discipline and argues that many of the colonial paradigms of knowledge production are still with us, shaping linguistic practices in the here-and-now as well as non-specialist talk about language and culture. The contributors explore how metalinguistic concepts and ways of creating linguistic knowledge are grounded in colonial practice, and exist parallel to, and sometimes in dialogue with other knowledges about language.

Brown, Penelope. Politeness and Impoliteness. Edited by Yan Huang. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199697960.013.16.

Abstract:
This article selectively reviews the literature on politeness across different disciplines—linguistics, anthropology, communications, conversation analysis, social psychology, and sociology—and critically assesses how both theoretical approaches to politeness and research on linguistic politeness phenomena have evolved over the past forty years. Major new developments include a shift from predominantly linguistic approaches to those examining politeness and impoliteness as processes that are embedded and negotiated in interactional and cultural contexts, as well as a greater focus on how both politeness and interactional confrontation and conflict fit into our developing understanding of human cooperation and universal aspects of human social interaction.
