Abstract:

The main body of the thesis is divided in three parts, each comprising two chapters. In the first part, I address the notion of scope from the perspective of linguistic economy, by discussing the drawbacks of an economy-based account of scope, and then I put forward an alternative account. In the second part, I apply a similar strategy, this time, with respect to binding. In the third part, I explore the theoretical consequences of the standard economy principles for two theses concerning, respectively, the nature of complex demonstratives and the purported logicality of natural language.

This dissertation proposes a principle of "economy of command", arguing that it provides a simple and natural explanation for some well-known properties of human language syntax. The focus is on the abstract combinatorial system that constructs the hierarchical structure of linguistic expressions, with long-distance dependencies determined by the structural relation of c-command. Dual number marked on personal pronouns and verbal agreement suffixes disappeared in the majority of Slavic languages except for three - Slovenian, Upper Sorbian, and Lower Sorbian. Previous studies do not provide a principled account why (i) the monomorphemic dual was reanalyzed as bimorphemic in Slovenian, Upper, and Lower Sorbian, and why (ii) it was replaced by the plural in the majority of Slavic languages including Russian and Kashubian. This thesis aims to explore and demonstrate the use of computational linguistic analysis to measure the "readability" of patent documents. By using readability as a proxy for the extent of disclosure in patent documents, this thesis studies whether patent applicants may strategically choose the disclosure level for their patents, and how the disclosure level would affect the patent acquisitions and patent examination.
