Abstract:
Drawing on the rich tradition of investigations into linguistic inequality, this paper seeks to define the phenomenon of pretextual gaps, i.e. socially anchored and often invisible differences between what is expected in communication and what people can bring and deploy in communication. Pretextual gaps refer to conditions on sayability, differential distribution of access to these conditions, and social evaluations attached to such differences. We shall investigate pretextual gaps in three sets of data, all of them instances of experiential narration: Asylum seekers’ narratives, hand-written life histories from Shaba, Congo, and narratives of suffering produced during the hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. We will attempt to demonstrate how a fine-grained discourse analysis focused on linguistic resources and models of deployment can refine existing views on linguistic inequality.

Abstract:
This article examines recent scientific studies on Chinese-Uzbek cross-linguistics, focusing on studies of euphemism and lacuna phenomena in both languages. Modern Chinese and Uzbek linguistics focus on the study of the language, particularly the lexicon, from a semantic, linguistic, and cultural perspective. The origins of household euphemisms in Chinese and Uzbek languages and the conceptual framework in which euphemisms are manifested were determined, and through the linguistic and cultural study of household euphemisms, conclusions were drawn about the distinctive and similar aspects of the worldviews of the two peoples. Identification, classification, and systematization of lacuna varieties were also addressed. The gaps in the Chinese and Uzbek languages are categorized thematically and analyzed. The methods for filling in and eradicating translation gaps are determined.

Abstract:
The study identifies translation strategies and linguistic gaps in translated photo captions and cartoons in the Rising Nepal and the Kathmandu Post from their Nepalese equivalent, the Gorkhapatra and the Kantipur national dailies. The researcher considered 55 photo captions (20 each) from The Rising Nepal and The Kathmandu Post and 15 cartoon captions from the Kathmandu Post. The study uncovered three translation strategies as literal, free and paraphrasing where literal and free translation were equally found and paraphrasing, the least found strategy. There were not any paraphrasing in cartoon section. The three linguistic gaps - phonological, lexical and structural gaps were found in all three sections: the Rising Nepal, the Kathmandu Post and The Cartoons while phonological gaps were found in sound level, lexical into words level and the structural into the sentence level. Since no two languages are similar and linguistic gaps are inevitable, the researcher found the use of the nearest equivalent terms to fulfill these gaps. Findings of this study will contribute to the language pedagogy, further research including journalists, editors and publishers, translation professionals as it gives a synopsis of translation strategies employed by a translator with clear understanding on linguistic gaps in translation.

Abstract:
Generativist pragmatists and discourse grammarians both subscribe to a functional view of language, but they do not agree on the nature of pragmatic principles. Prince (1988a,b) has argued that form-function correlations are arbitrary and language specific. Discourse grammarians have argued that pragmatic, and even grammatical rules, emerge out of universal, natural and predictable extralinguistic pressures. I will argue that although the distribution of gaps and resumptive pronouns in relative clauses seems arbitrary and language specific, one cognitively-based form-function principle governs their distribution. Relative clauses where the head is highly accessible when the relativized position is processed take gaps, whereas relative clauses which maintain a relatively low degree of accessibility of the head when the relativized position is processed take resumptive pronouns. The differences between languages are then attributed to language-specific grammaticization processes, rather than to different motivations and/or discoursal patterns.

In recent years, continuing advances in technology have increased the capacity to automate the extraction of a range of linguistic features of texts and thus have provided the impetus for the substantial growth of corpus linguistics. While corpus linguistic tools and methods have been used extensively in second language learning research, they have also been used increasingly in the design and validation of language assessments (Callies & Götz, 2015; Deshors, Götz, & Laporte, 2016; Park, 2014). The collection of papers in this special issue represents an intentional and systematic effort to encourage the cross-pollination of corpus linguistics and language assessment. The research foci of these papers take this cross-disciplinary area in exciting, new directions. At the same time, the papers also point to some important gaps and provide inspiration for additional research. In this commentary, I offer some perspectives on how the papers contribute to this cross-disciplinary research area and then share my reflections on some of the gaps that need to be narrowed or closed if language testing researchers and practitioners are to take full advantage of the potential of corpus linguistics for language assessment.

The Qur’an’s artful synthesis of linguistic precision and rhetorical eloquence has established it as a foundational text in Arabic linguistics, rhetoric, and theological studies; however, contemporary research frequently remains fragmented, concentrating on isolated stylistic features or individual surahs without sufficiently exploring cross-textual variation or bridging classical rhetorical frameworks with modern linguistic methodologies. To address these gaps, this study proposes an integrative framework that synthesizes classical Arabic stylistics, Systemic Functional Linguistics, and digital methodologies to systematically analyze the Qur’an’s stylistic and linguistic patterns, including rhetorical devices, syntactic structures, and morphological trajectories. These features are shown to operate as a coherent, context-sensitive system aligned with theological imperatives and communicative objectives, offering both theoretical enrichment and practical applications in education, translation, and digital humanities. By bridging traditional hermeneutics with contemporary linguistic and computational tools, this framework not only deepens scholarly understanding of Qur'anic discourse but also lays the foundation for future interdisciplinary research, enabling nuanced analyses of stylistic variation across surahs while ensuring broader accessibility and relevance in diverse academic and public contexts.

Abstract:
This article attempts to study the linguistic and non-linguistic factors under which many words are rarely used or dead, as well as the reasons for the resurrection of dead words. Dead word samples were taken from different languages and described within their linguistic contexts, e.g. political and cultural, to explain any gaps. The results show that the gaps between words and their contexts lead to word death, concluding that; first, surviving words are due to polysemy, conversion, borrowing words, expressing multiple speakers’ intended meaning, and literature – all these linguistic factors make words more frequently used. Second, long words and abbreviations are reasons for rare usage. Third, dead words are resurrected and used to express technical terms. Finally, the loss of semantic content and the context of a word are the most common causes of word death. The originality of this topic motivates me to propose a new sub-discipline in lexicology – ‘lexicathanatology’ – to study what causes word death and survival. For further studies, lexica-thanatology may study the causes of the death of grammatical units affixations and other words that express pragmatic meaning. The results of this study will assist linguists who work in the fields of lexicology, linguistic documentary and historical and comparative linguistics. The nature of lexicathanatology can serve sociology, politics and anthropology as sub-disciplines socio-thanatology, politico-thanatology and cultural-thanatology. They study the death causes of social, cultural values and why humans amend some polices and abandoned others.

Language and communication play pivotal roles in the insurance industry, impacting claims processing, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency. This study investigates the dynamics of errors within insurance claims across six distinct languages—African, Afrikaans, English, French, German, and Asian languages. The purpose is to identify language-specific error patterns and their implications for customer-centric methods. This study utilises a dataset of insurance claims spanning multiple languages. The analysis encompasses the probability theories approach to unravel error distributions and their associations. The study reveals that linguistic diversity significantly impacts the insurance industry, emphasising the need for language-centric approaches to error reduction This highlights the need for customised communication strategies and enlightening initiatives to address the unique challenges faced by this linguistic demographic especially the complex legal jargon that is not easily understood by all. In conclusion, this paper advises insurance companies to navigate the complex terrain of multilingual interactions. It enriches the existing body of knowledge surrounding insurance claim management, offering a roadmap to navigate the intricacies of language diversity within the industry. By addressing the linguistic-specific challenges identified in this study, insurance providers can enhance their services, reduce errors, and ultimately foster improved customer experiences.

The article deals with the phenomenon of gaps in legal terminology of the English language from the point of view of its Russian translation. The author analyzes the approaches to understanding lexical gaps. Examples of terminological gaps have been selected from English-English explanatory dictionaries. The selected terminological units have no equivalents in legal terminology of the Russian language. The study reveals the role of the commentary in rendering the meaning of terminological gaps. While considering the factors determining the existence of gaps, the author pays attention to both linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. The research revealed a number of lexical gaps among the terms of international law. English-Russian termninological dictionaries in some cases contain the explanations of notional gaps. The use of transliteration is a signal of notional gap. The conclusion is made about the connection between the perception of gaps and the structures of one’s mother tongue. The social and historical character of the gaps under study has been proved to be well-grounded. The author emphasizes the importance of detailed definitions for adequate rendering of the gaps.

Lacunae in literary title translation represent gaps in meaning that arise due to linguistic and cultural differences between languages. These gaps, often unnoticed within a single language, become evident when comparing languages and attempting to translate literary works. Lacunae can be linguistic, where a term has no direct equivalent, or cultural, where historical, idiomatic, or stylistic elements do not transfer smoothly. This study examines various challenges translators face when adapting literary titles and explores strategies such as literal translation, adaptation, transcreation, and omission/addition. By analyzing case studies from Uzbek and English literary translations, this paper highlights how lacunae affect intercultural communication and literary accessibility. Understanding lacunae enhances the quality of translations, ensuring that the essence of a literary work is preserved while making it understandable to a wider audience. This research contributes to the ongoing discussion in translation studies by offering practical solutions for overcoming these linguistic gaps.

Phonetic iconicity refers to the direct correlation between linguistic forms and their meanings, serving as a significant research domain in linguistics. Ideophones, as a special lexical category, express semantic features such as color, scent, motion, and appearance through sound imitation, rhythmic patterns, and formal schematization. The abundant and diverse ideophones in ethnic languages within China demonstrate a close connection between phonetic forms and meanings, offering rich linguistic data for studying phonetic iconicity. Current research lacks systematic cross-linguistic investigations into the iconic manifestations of ideophones, particularly showing notable gaps in typological comparisons among China's ethnic languages. This paper conducts a cross-linguistic examination of phonetic iconicity in ideophones across China's ethnic languages. Through detailed analysis of various iconic motivations—including vowel symbolism, consonant symbolism, suprasegmental iconicity, syllabic iconicity, and pattern iconicity—it aims to reveal both cross-linguistic commonalities and regional characteristics in the phonetic-iconic manifestations of ideophones. The findings are expected to provide new perspectives and evidence for understanding the essential nature and universal principles of human language.

This study aims to explore different linguistics patterns of Argumentative essays written for Central Superior Services/ Provincial Management Service (CSS/PMS) in Pakistan by using Biber’s Multidimensional approach (MDA). This is a corpus based study which is experimental in nature. The function of this approach is to explain the functional association of linguistic patterns systematically. This study has been performed by using second level of MD (New MD). The researchers have collected the corpus of 30 essays which are argumentative in nature. These essays are downloaded from the popular online forums which are used for the preparation of competitive exams/ current affairs issues in Pakistan. The researchers claim that Pakistan CSS/PMS aspirants focus more on sharing information rather than building arguments in their essay writing papers at CSS/PMS level. Doing so, they do not fulfill the linguistic requirement of the said papers. The ideas presented by them are without logical reasoning or research based facts. The results of these essays show that these aspirants share information in these essays rather than building arguments through cohesion and coherence. Most of the Pakistani leaners of English Language do not have the basic knowledge of grammar. So, they don’t know how to develop personal viewpoints while attempting essay paper. The researchers have analyzed these linguistic gaps through multidimensional analysis of selected essays that may help the CSS/PMS aspirants to fix these linguistic gaps.

Neurotargeting prioritizes emotions in understanding collective unconscious and individual behavior. Comparative emotive linguistics reveals cross-cultural emotional expression variations. Despite extensive emotion research, gaps remain due to differing response norms. Psychology understands emotions well, but lacks universal classification, hindering linguistic description. Confusion between emotion and emotive obscures psychophysiological and verbal distinctions. Nonverbal emotives, reflecting emotions, require analysis of generation and expression mechanisms. This study examines color's role in conveying negative emotions in Kazakh writer A. Nurpeisov's "Blood and Sweat" and American writer T. Dreiser's "Trilogy of Desire." Authors use linguistic and nonverbal methods to portray emotions. Hypothesis: color as emotive state designation functions with "permissible-unacceptable" and "good-bad" evaluations, evident in shaping emotional reality perception. Analyzing coloristic negative emotives uncovers ethno-cultural metaphorical models, connecting emotive coloronyms with basic emotional concepts. Findings aid standardizing cognitive mechanisms for understanding mental experiences and comparative emotive linguistic terminology.

The present research deals with the analysis of lexical gaps belonging to legal terminology, which emerged in the Russian language due to the processes of digitalization of English-language terminological system of criminal law. Due to insufficient state of knowledge of terminological gaps in institutional discourse, in legal discourse in particular, the problem of developing the mechanisms to overcome terminological lacunarity becomes very significant, setting a task to find the most productive translation methods. Conducting complex linguistic analysis of lacunae in the Russian-language terminological system of criminal law emerged due to the internationalization of law in the conditions of development, enhancement of new information technologies and appearance of new highly-technological kinds of crimes using these technologies, demands employing a series of linguistic methods and approaches, particularly, content-analysis, component and etymological analysis, contrasting analysis aimed at comparing terminological gaps with extra-linguistic phenomena they represent, the research material includes legal online glossaries, reference and analytical materials of USA government agencies and information protection services, translation dictionaries. In the result of the conducted research the authors conclude that terminological gaps belonging to the sphere of criminal law are widely represented in English-language legal discourse. This can be explained by two objective tendencies typical of modern legal discourse, the tendency of internationalization of law and digitalization of English-language legal terminological system. The article discusses current research in the fi eld of applied linguistics dedicated to the evaluation of artifi cial intelligence (AI) systems. Linguistic tests are used as the principal tool for evaluating the level of intelligence of such systems, being the most aff ordable way of training AI systems and, at the same time, having high variability necessary for the formulation of intellectual tasks. This paper provides an overview of current methodology for training and testing AI systems and describes the gold standards of textual tasks (benchmarks) in the General Language Understanding Evaluation (GLUE) methodology. We also present an overview of how the theoretical apparatus and practices of linguistics are used to create a Russian-language test for examining the abilities of AI systems, the Russian SuperGLUE. Further convergence of machine learning and linguistic methods can fi ll gaps both in the practice of evaluating AI systems and in their eff ective training.

In the religious education transmission it seems essential to be perceiving language of the religious education by pupils. Amongst pupils and religion instruction teachers from primary schools and post-secondary a belief that the new manuals are adapted for the age and the level of the religious knowledge of pupils is dominating, they aren't proposing more serious linguistic problems concerning remarks. This belief results from the low-end acquaintance of the religious /terminology pupil’s/ and of religion instruction teacher’s /conformism/. Pupils of upper secondary schools are more conscious of their gaps in the knowledge of a language religious however the little percentage is only trying to make up for these gaps through the participation in active religious education /especially this beyond the school/.

This study analyzed the frontier of the current state of Quranic linguistic research with the objective of identifying essential features that will direct future research in the field. This research employed bibliometric and citation analysis methodologies in order to achieve this objective. Scopus was selected as the bibliometric data source due to its reliability for research reviews, scientific policy evaluations, research landscape studies, and university rankings. A total of 375 data points were retrieved from Sccopus in relation to the searcrh term "Quranic linguistic research." Several programs were employed, including Microsoft Excel to perform frequency studies, VOS viewer to visualize the data, and Harzing’s Publish or Perish for citation metric calculation and analysis. The findings indicate that Quranic linguistic research is a cross-disciplinary field with previous literature primarily focusing on areas such as linguistic theory, phonetics, syntax, and semantics. The growing number of publications on Quranic linguistics demonstrates a growing interest among scholarly and the potential impact on various academic disciplines. This study identifies significant trends, prominent authors, country contributions, and existing research gaps within the field. The data sources were selected exclusively from the Scopus database. This study represents earliest bibliometric examination of Quranic linguistic research utilising a comprehensive publication database.

The article is devoted to one of the most topical issues in translation studies, as evidenced by the increased interest of many linguists in it – the translation of non-equivalent vocabulary in German. The concepts of “lacuna” and “non-equivalent vocabulary” are defined with due regard to the works of many scholars. At the same time, it is noted that there is no unanimity in linguistics on this issue. Different scholars interpret the terms “non-equivalent vocabulary” and “lacuna” in different ways. A working definition has been generated according to which non-equivalent vocabulary is the concepts, objects and phenomena that exist in the source language and have neither partial nor full equivalents in the target language. The article is devoted to the peculiarities of lacunae translation in Ukrainian and German, translation issues are considered, and it is emphasised that translation theory is aimed at the fullest reproduction of the original in a foreign language environment.

Word-for-word the advanced English Language learners' vocabulary skills present a profound hurdle towards self-articulation, socially, academically, or otherwise, and with fluency. These gaps in vocabulary severely cripple effective communication simultaneously resulting in a paradoxical understanding of communication. This study, therefore, seeks to establish the extent to which lack of vocabulary skills affects oral skills and find the factors that constitute the gaps in communicative abilities. This study purposively collected quantitative data from 5th graders in Santa Ana Private Educational Unit and employed semi-structured interviews to collect qualitative data from teachers. Teachers gave some responses that enabled them to understand the communication problems that existed in the classroom. The study aimed to understand how vocabulary problems are proportioned to students not being able to express themselves articulately in desired discussions. Looking from both sides helps in understanding the situation in total. This helped understand the extent to which oral articulation and expression were inhibited due to great gaps in vocabulary.

The role of cultural distance in market integration, particularly in the developing world, has received relatively little attention. Using prices from more than 200 South Asian markets spanning 1861 to 1921, we show that linguistic distance correlates negatively with market integration. A one-standard-deviation increase in linguistic distance predicts a reduction in the price correlation between two markets of 0.121 standard deviations for wheat, 0.181 for salt, and 0.088 for rice. While factors like genetic distance, literacy gaps, and railway connections are correlated with linguistic distance, they do not fully explain the correlation between linguistic distance and market integration.

AbstractCan emergent literacy impact the size of the linguistic units children attend to? We examined children's ability to segment multiword sequences before and after they learned to read, in order to disentangle the effect of literacy and age on segmentation. We found that early readers were better at segmenting multiword units (after controlling for age, cognitive, and linguistic variables), and that improvement in literacy skills between the two sessions predicted improvement in segmentation abilities. Together, these findings suggest that literacy acquisition, rather than age, enhanced segmentation. We discuss implications for models of language learning.

Background This study examines the Arabic semi-prepositional contronym /warā’a/ in the Holy Quran, which conveys the dual meanings of ‘behind’ and ‘in front of.’ By employing cognitive linguistic frameworks—Prototype Theory, Image Schema Theory, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, and Frame Semantics—the research investigates the cognitive mechanisms underlying the term’s semantic versatility. Methods An in-depth cognitive linguistic analysis was conducted, supported by collocational analysis to explore how /warā’a/ is interpreted in diverse contexts. The study analyzed both prototypical spatial meanings and their metaphorical extensions, focusing on semantic priming and contextual interpretation. Results The findings reveal that the prototypical spatial meaning of /warā’a/ (‘behind’) dynamically extends to metaphorical and temporal contexts, encompassing ideas of concealment, control, deliberate ignorance, future anticipation, and other nuanced interpretations. The research highlights the role of semantic priming in shaping contextual meanings and offers actionable insights for translation accuracy in religious texts. Conclusions This study fills gaps in existing research by providing a detailed exploration of /warā’a/’s semantic complexity. It bridges theoretical insights and practical applications, offering innovative strategies for linguistics and translation studies. Future research directions include cross-linguistic studies of contronyms, psycholinguistic experiments on contradictory meanings, and culturally-informed cognitive-semantic translation strategies. This work contributes significantly to Arabic linguistics and cognitive translation studies.

The findings indicate that conceptual metaphors play a crucial role in representing human experience, while prototype theory provides insights into conceptual categories and meaning perception. Furthermore, meaning analysis within cognitive linguistics tends to be interdisciplinary, involving cognitive psychology, anthropology, and computer science. The article presents the results of the Forum “Linguistic Anthropology”, dedicated to the current state of language and culture studies in Russia. It is obvious that the transfer of an interdisciplinary field called “Linguistic Anthropology” to Russian science and education is already underway. At the same time, as the discussion shows, a Russian version of this area is organized around several points of attraction: Western literature on language and culture and language and politics, the theory and methods of linguistics, sociolinguistics, conversational analysis and discourse analysis, and the Russian school of еthnolinguistics. An intriguing methodological problem at the intersection of anthropology and linguistics is dealing with the unspoken, the ambiguous and the ironic. The participants in the discussion ask critical questions both of the grounds on which the researcher recognizes gaps and ambiguities, and of the goals of her interlocutors when they indicate that certain meanings cannot be expressed. Reflecting on the analytical potential of the metaphor of translation (another point where language and culture meet), the Forum participants talk about its political underpinnings: translation can both establish hierarchical relationships and create a space for cooperation. The discussion showed that the translation of American linguistic anthropology into Russian academic reality can create a space for dialogue both between disciplines and between researchers from different countries. The union of anthropology and linguistics offers relevant tools that are in demand not only among anthropologists and ethnographers, but also among historians, sociologists and other researchers who seek to understand social reality.

Abstract Though episodes of lucidity (EL) in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD), reportedly more common near end of life, have significant implications for care, they are poorly understood due to underdeveloped methodological approaches for capturing and measuring these events. This prospective observational study addresses these gaps through audiovisual observation among persons with ADRD surrounding end of life to inform data-driven definitions for EL and distinguish EL from routine fluctuations in ADRD. Audiovisual observation is well-suited to addressing gaps in operationalization of EL, providing an objective data source to assess verbal and nonverbal communication, the primary means through which EL are evidenced. Our study is designed to establish optimal procedures for capturing audiovisual data of targeted populations and timeframes to maximize opportunities for detecting EL. Operationalization of EL will be informed by computational linguistic and behavioral-event coding of linguistic and non-linguistic communication features of EL and associated temporal qualities.

It is known that the collection of missing items is of great importance in contributing to the completion of our ancient linguistic dictionaries, filling the gaps in them and enriching their content. It contributes to reviving a root described as neglected, or helps to understand an ancient text or witness. The study concluded with results, including: The book of "Attaaliqat wa- al-nawadir" By Abu Ali Al-Hajari is a source full of lexical gaps that are not few. The diversity of the Arabs' environments and their different lifestyles also led to the multiplicity of the semantics of the words. Highlighting the lexical missing helps to complete the Arabic lexicon material and contributes to building the desired historical lexicon and Arabic linguistic atlas.

Emotions attract attention of specialists in various fields of knowledge. Thus, linguists delineate the methods of emotions representation in language and discourse. Analysis of scientific publications reveals certain gaps in emotions study and contradictory opinions on the subject as well. The present survey focuses on problems related to emotions study in the context of psychology and linguistics methods. As a result, we postulate absence of a common definition for emotions, absence of non-contradictory inventory of emotional states and absence of criteria for delineation of emotion and feeling concepts. The article discusses the functions of the words emotion and feeling, outlines vocabulary related to emotions in the Russian language world image, and characterizes means of emotions representation in language and discourse. The article draws attention to study of emotions in cognitive and culturological linguistic dimensions; it may be useful while compiling linguistic and psychological dictionaries of emotions.

Different agropesticide texts were collected from farm input shops and analysed, and informants were interviewed based on the words, phrases, and sentences from the texts. The data were then analysed through thematic analysis. The translation of such information faces some challenges including coinage in the source language, meaning distinction in the source language, formal differences between English and Kiswahili, lack of Kiswahili equivalents for the names of some Kiswahili diseases and pests, and the traditional agricultural practices. Given the genealogical and typological differences between English and Kiswahili, translating through descriptions would overcome non-equivalence between the two languages at the word level. Translating agropesticide texts in Tanzania has implications for proper farming practices among farmers. Directions on the proper use of agropesticides are meant to make farmers practice productive farming. The challenges facing the translation between the two languages can be mitigated through descriptive equivalence and borrowing which is adapted to the morphological and phonological patterns of the target language.

Abstract:
This study investigated the perceived level of effectiveness of using ChatGPT on the linguistic skills and written communication skills in English of senior high school students in Carmona Cavite, Philippines. The study was anchored on the communicative competence theory. A descriptive correlational research design was employed, utilizing a survey questionnaire to gather data from 50 senior high school students. Results show that respondents have room for improvements in linguistic skills in English. Although the respondents perceive ChatGPT as highly effective as an academic support tool, this is not enough because the respondents linguistic test results suggest significant gaps in foundational linguistic skills. This could result in communication barriers, limiting ability to construct grammatically correct and varied sentence, and could lead to confusion in understanding and using language effectively in different context. In addition, while the respondents perceive themselves as having relatively strong written communication skills, the respondents’ perceived effectiveness of ChatGPT does not affect their written communication skills. A detailed action plan was articulated to improve the linguistic and written communication skills of the students. There is a clear need for targeted intervention and initiatives to improve the linguistic and written communication skills in English of the students. Educational language instructions need to be enhanced and educators should consider adapting learner-centered strategies that combine traditional methodology and ChatGPT or other technologies. This descriptive correlational study provides novel exploration of perceived effectiveness of ChatGPT and students linguistic and written communication skills in English. It is very helpful because it reveals that the perceived effectiveness of ChatGPT does not directly correlate with the linguistics or written communications skills in English.

This study examined healthcare communication through the lens of applied linguistics, focusing on themes outlined by Candlin and Candlin (2003), including interpreters, narratives, risk, patient-practitioner interactions, and critical accounts. Interviews with seven healthcare practitioners in Indonesia and Finland reveal challenges such as language diversity and limited access to interpreter services, leading to reliance on informal strategies like gestures and family involvement. The findings highlight the importance of cultural competence in bridging communication gaps, emphasizing its role in addressing patient needs and fostering trust. Additionally, the study underscores the potential of therapeutic communication training and technology-driven solutions, such as telehealth interpreting services, to enhance healthcare interactions. By integrating linguistic insights, the research advocates for collaborative, multidisciplinary efforts to improve communication practices in diverse healthcare settings. Future studies should explore cultural competence training and innovative technological approaches to address language-related challenges in healthcare.

This paper evaluates Malawian learners’ French language comprehension abilities concerning the French radio program ‘Le Journal en français facile’ (The News in Simple French), broadcast by Radio France Internationale. Specifically, it assesses learners’ levels of aural comprehension of this Francophone news content designed for non-native audiences. The paper examines whether the universal applicability of the ‘français facile’ (simple French) concept across heterogeneous learners can be assumed, considering linguistic aspects deemed elementary from a Francophone perspective may not prove equivalently rudimentary for anglophone learners of French. Methodologically, the paper is grounded in the Bottom-up and Top-down listening comprehension model, which emphasises integrating linguistic and prior sociocultural knowledge to facilitate aural meaningmaking. Through French listening exercises and teacher interviews with a sample of Malawian college students, the study highlights limitations in comprehension, with listeners restricted to grasping essential lexical news components like numbers, names and locations while failing to parse complex news concepts —attributed to newscaster accent, pronunciation, speech rate, unfamiliar vocabulary, and insufficient prior knowledge activation. This paper argues the notion of “simple” French may be misconstrued when applied uniformly across diverse global learners engaging with RFI broadcasts, evidenced by difficulty comprehending the news program among numerous Malawian learners despite its simplified linguistic profile. Mastery of these broadcasts, it is contended, necessitates more advanced proficiency.

In this article we first focus on some of the most important classification systems of linguistic corpora and discuss both the strengths and weaknesses. We pay close attention to the work of Sara Laviosa (1997), Joan Torruella y Joaquim Llisterri (1999), Gloria Corpas Pastor (2001) and Sylviane Granger (2003), not forgetting the contributions by Mona Baker (1995), Stig Johansson (1998 and 2003), Rosa Rabadán y Purificación Fernández Nistal (2002), Maeve Olohan (2004) and Paul Baker (2006). However, despite great advantage of all previous work, our study identified gaps for which we would respectfully suggest some solutions. Finally, we present our classification system in which we attempt to reflect clearly the hierarchical relationships that exist between different types of corpora. The ultimate goal is to offer a wide, comprehensive and flexible classification, which can be easily adapted to the needs of each research work and meet the requirements of linguistic corpora analysis, particularly in the field of Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to explore how students approach, try to understand, and interpret figurative expressions in the context of language learning. Interpreting figurative language represents a challenge as languages are rich in metaphorical expressions and contextual/local references. The empirical study was carried out in the context of collaborative work in classrooms with students 12 to 13 years of age, translating two songs, one in English and one in Swedish. The results show that the students struggle to capture the sense of the lyrics. Addressing these difficulties, students engage in language-related episodes (LRE&amp;rsquo;s) where they topicalize language, meta-communicate and inquire into acceptable cross-linguistic interpretations that preserve the metaphorical nature of the expressions. Their linguistic sensitivity and familiarity with specific metaphorical expressions, contextual and local references are challenged, and their learning process involves an increasing capacity to talk about and reflect on the meaning potentials of linguistic expressions.
