<p>This essay adopts a construction grammar approach to the linguistic pattern why don’t you. It argues that the pattern can have two different senses: an interrogative sense and a suggestive sense. In this paper I discuss the distribution of the so-called stem marker -ku- in Swahili, which is found with some, mostly monosyllabic verbs when used with certain tense morphemes. After introducing the data, I show that there are three potential analyses to explain the data, which I discuss in turn. Two of these analyses are phonological in nature and relate the distribution of -ku- to stress assignment. The framework developed and tested in this study argues that the success of mediated persuasive appeals can be partially explained by the interaction among linguistic and extra-linguistic variables. This study measures the general language attrition of a memorized narrative and an open-ended narrative between time one (T1) and time two (T2) measurements. Research in L2 learners' use of discourse markers (DMs), which largely focuses on single-word DMs and reports learners' overuse or underuse tendency, generally concludes that L2 learners need a keener register awareness in this regard. This lack of awareness in using DMs in accordance with the appropriate register, however, is not further pursued.
