Abstract:
A natural language allows a set of simpler ideas to be combined together to communicate much more complex ideas. This ability gives language the potential for use as a highly intuitive method of human interaction. However, this freedom of expression makes interpreting language with automation extremely challenging. Semantic sentence similarity is an approach which allows the knowledge of how to compare simpler units, such as words, to obtain a measure of similarity between two sentences. This similarity can allow existing knowledge to be applied to new situations. The objective of this researc

This thesis describes the implementation of a covering algorithm for semantic decomposition of sentences of technical patents. This research complements the ASPIN project that has a long term goal of providing an automated system for digital system synthesis from patents. In order to develop a prototype of the system explained in a patent, a natural language processor (sentence-interpreter) is required. These systems typically attempt to interpret a sentence by syntactic analysis (parsing) followed by semantic analysis. Quite often, the technical narrative contains grammatical errors, incompl

Thinking and using a language are two different but similar activities. Thinking about thinking and thinking about language use have been two major strands in the history of philosophy. One of the principal similarities is that they are both rational activities. As a result, the ability to think and the ability to use a language require being able to recognise and respond to reasons. However, there is a further feature of these activities: we humans are able to have explicit knowledge of how those activities work and what is done by performances in those activities. In this thesis I examine the linguistic, semantic and sociolinguistic components of the English modal system and the difficulty the system presents to both instructors and learners of English as a second language (ESL). The purpose of this study was to determine what these components are and how they affect communication. I begin by defining what modality is and how it is manifested in English. The focus is upon the one-word modals and not the phrasal modals; however, some phrasal modals are explicated when a contrast exists between the meaning of the one-word modal and its phrasal equivalent.

Ja and ye ('go' and 'come' respectively, from the Indian language Marathi) are first semantically examined as basic verbs of physical motion. Then instances which vary from this basic 'sense' of the words are analysed with respect to theories of polysemy via semantic extension (through metaphor and metonymy), and deixis. Some evidence is found to support theories of 'figurative' deixis, utilizing the concept of 'subjectivity' as a primary grounding force in our construction of meaning. Subjectivity is also implicated in the dominant mechanism of semantic shift by 'result' metonymy, wherein the

`Kinds of objects and their meanings´ deals with objecthood in Kiswahili. From a syntactic point of view, there is but one kind of object: the distinction between `direct´ and `indirect´ object has no syntactic properties, and one verb can have only one object. Of course, objects can have different semantic roles. This raises questions about the syntactic and semantic functions of `naked´ non-objects, and some of these are approached by inspecting fifty examples of the verb kutia `to put [sth] [into]´ from Sacleux´s dictionary. Three syntactic and semantic frames are distinguished and the resp

Abstract:
This thesis presents a computational text analysis tool called AFFECTiS (Affect Interpretation/Inference System) which focuses on the task of interpreting natural language text based on its subjective, non-factual, affective properties that go beyond the 'traditional' factual, objective dimensions of meaning that have so far been the main focus of Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics. The thesis presents a fully compositional uniform wide-coverage computational model of sentiment in text that builds on a number of fundamental compositional sentiment phenomena and processes

Abstract:
This thesis makes several contributions towards improved methods for encoding structure in computational models of word meaning. New methods are proposed and evaluated which address the requirement of being able to easily encode linguistic structural features within a computational representation while retaining the ability to scale to large volumes of textual data. Various methods are implemented and evaluated on a range of evaluation tasks to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Neste país, o português apresenta marcas típicas (de natureza sintática, morfológica, fonético-fonológica e semântico-pragmática), embora ainda não possua instrumentos normalizadores, como gramáticas e dicionários específicos desta variante. O caso que agora nos ocupa pretende destacar as diferenças semântico-pragmáticas que se observam no português em Angola, identificar os desvios que neste âmbito existem em relação à n
