Abstract:
This study concerns the use of corpus linguistics methodology in psycholinguistics research. Ten linguistic metaphors were selected from English and American newspapers. After that, we identified the underlying conceptual metaphor based on the conceptual metaphor inventory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980, 1999). We seek to investigate what sort of knowledge EFL-learners use when trying to understand a linguistic metaphor. We examined how EFL-learners comprehend linguistic metaphors, firstly without using the context and then using the context. The sample comprised 221 Brazilian students and 16 American students at UCSC. We have also carried out an empirical research using WebCorp.

Abstract:
Unlike most linguistic theories, integrational linguistics does not include a methodology for linguistic inquiry. Integrationists are critical of the methodologies and assumptions of modern linguistics and find the notion of linguistic data highly problematic. For this, integrationists have taken a lot of heat from researchers from data-driven research traditions who ask for a methodological alternative and find the lack of empirical integrational research frustrating. In this essay, I consider some of the background for the integrational critique of linguistic methodologies and discuss how to address the difficulties pertaining to linguistic data. I conclude with an empirical example to illustrate the problems as well as their possible solution.

Abstract:
This article will talk about the linguistic analysis of the artistic text: history, methodology and research methods. In Uzbek linguistics, the study of the language and style of works of art, as in World linguistics, is the central problem of many studies. Linguistic analysis, which applies to any text, takes two stages (levels) into its composition, namely semantic and metasemiotic. In the semantic stage, Language units (word, vocabu-lary, syntactic construction) are studied in their own sense of atash, that is, semantic. And in the metasemiotic stage, the stages of the transition from the meaning of language units to the study of their functions in an artistic text are studied. In this second stage, it is precisely the role of grammati-cal means that becomes very significant, and the thoughts that the author wants to express are made real by garmmatic means. Now, in addition to the lexical meaning of the word, the grammatical meaning is also the main weapon in the expression of thought. The article also comments on the methods of linguopoetic research, analysis of several Russian scientists have been made and reacted to them. The mutual integration of language and literature is the basis for the emergence of this field, and many exam-ples in it have been drawn into analysis.

Abstract:
The article highlights the research methodology of religious vocabulary in American presidential discourse. The relevance of the work is due to the priority of communicative-pragmatic approach to the study of discursive formations of different genres and formats in modern linguistics. The study of discourse is an important area in modern linguistics in connection with the change of scientific paradigm that has taken place in linguistics, namely: the dominant system-structural and static paradigm has been replaced by the anthropocentric one. Religious vocabulary functions in both domestic and institutional communication in three main forms, namely: general religious vocabulary, biblical (set expressions, phraseology) and quotations from the Scriptures. This tendency is observed both in the political discourse in general and in the presidential discourse in particular, which emphasizes the relevance of our work. The search for effective ways to analyze and describe the semantics and functions of religious vocabulary in American presidential discourse has led to the choice of basic approaches to the object of study. Regarding the genre space of presidential discourse as a kind of political discourse, we note that it is determined by the general political system of the country, historical and political traditions of the presidency, socio-cultural conditions of political discourse. The methods used in linguistic studies involve the implementation of a system of procedures for studying the object and verification of the results. Typical guidelines for systematic philological analysis include attention to the semantic side of the text represented by textual categories, and the communicative immersion of the text in discursive reproduction. For systematic analysis, the following methods are used in the work, which take into account the communicative essence of the discourse text, reflect the significance of the text in the light of its generation and interpretation. That is why the work uses both general and special research methods.

Abstract:
As it is known, in accordance with the paradigmatic prism, the formation and development of linguistics as a science for a number of years have traditionally been correlated with comparative-historical, system-structural directions. It should be noted that in recent years, language and speech have been considered in aspects of anthropocentrism. The transition of general scientific evolution to a synergetic platform requires a different methodology for studying linguistic objects. In world linguistics, the methodological possibilities of synergetics are actively used for linguistic research, attempts are being made to interpret language and its sublevels (phonetics, word formation, lexicology, syntax, text, discourse, translation studies, etc.) as a synergetic, self-organizing, complex system in which it is constantly in dynamics. As a result of scientific research, a new direction of linguistics was formed – language synergetics / linguosynergetics. Language synergetics / linguosynergetics is a methodological platform for analyzing and modeling the evolution, development, open nature of the national language, and dynamic processes in it. As a new scientific direction, the synergetics of language allows Kazakh linguistics to develop in accordance with the scientific trends of world linguistics. The article analyzes the formation of a synergetic trend in world linguistics, the first searches and results in order to substantiate the concept of "language is a synergetic system".

Abstract:
Within cognitive linguistics, there is an increasing awareness that the study of linguistic phenomena needs to be grounded in usage. Ideally, research in cognitive linguistics should be based on authentic language use, its results should be replicable, and its claims falsifiable. Consequently, more and more studies now turn to corpora as a source of data. While corpus-based methodologies have increased in sophistication, the use of corpus data is also associated with a number of unresolved problems. The study of cognition through off-line linguistic data is, arguably, indirect, even if such data fulfils desirable qualities such as being natural, representative and plentiful. Several topics in this context stand out as particularly pressing issues. This discussion note addresses (1) converging evidence from corpora and experimentation, (2) whether corpora mirror psychological reality, (3) the theoretical value of corpus linguistic studies of ‘alternations’, (4) the relation of corpus linguistics and grammaticality judgments, and, lastly, (5) the nature of explanations in cognitive corpus linguistics. We do not claim to resolve these issues nor to cover all possible angles; instead, we strongly encourage reactions and further discussion.

Abstract:
The scientific works of scholars and experts dedicated to conceptology, intercultural communication, and linguistics became the foundation for this research. The author analyzes bibliography, presents various approaches towards conceptology, formulates main conclusions of recent research on the indicated problematic, as well as provides specific examples. Research of the concepts presented in different linguistic worldviews, including Russian linguistic paradigm of the world, is first and foremost substantiated by the importance of intercultural communication in the current context. The relevance of this topic is defined by the significance of studying the dialogue of cultures, language, culture and mentality. The selected topic is of interest to the philosophers, linguists, culturologists and foreign language pedagogues. In anthropological linguistics, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, linguoculturology and other fields, the subject of research is the concept of the dialogue of cultures along with interaction between language, culture and mentality. The development of Russian relations on international arena over the past decade led to active cooperation in the area of education, economy, trade and tourism. Therefore, there is an urgent need for studying communication in the situation of interaction between the representatives of Russian and foreign cultures from the perspective of teaching languages as a means of intercultural communication. The need to study communication is justified by different communication behavior in Russia and other countries in the cultural aspect. Insufficient understanding of the language of communication can result in communication failures and even initiate cross-cultural conflict. In the following paragraphs of this article, the author gives detailed attention to specificity of the concept in the linguistic worldviews.

Abstract:
The article substantiates the problem of performing translation analysis of cross-cultural incongruity in English anecdotes in Ukrainian translation using the methodology consisting of four methodological blocks (qualification, linguocultural, linguistic, and translation ones). The purpose of the article is to justify the presented cognitive and discursive methodology for translation analysis of cross-cultural incongruity when transferring the comic in English anecdotes into Ukrainian. The tasks of the research are the following: to characterize the methods of linguistic and cultural analysis in the study of the ethnocultural specificity of the conceptual picture of the world embodied in English anecdotes; to describe the methods of linguistic analysis of verbal means of expressing the comic in English anecdotes; to analyze the strategies and tactics of rendering the comic in Ukrainian translation of English anecdotes. The research material is taken from anecdotes in translation, presented in the collections Awesome Jokes by S. Keller and the resource 1001 Jokes by R. Wiseman on the Internet site, which were rendered into Ukrainian mostly by amateur translators, and in which comic effect was adequately represented in translation. 1112 anecdotes were studied, including 807 context realization of key concepts of the comic in original and translation. The research methodology of translation analysis of cross-cultural incongruity in English anecdotes during their translation into Ukrainian, in addition to the application of general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, systematization, and induction, relies on the methodological base of linguocultural studies, cognitive linguistics, and translation studies. The cognitive and discursive nature of the research determines the choice of presentation of the research methodology in the form of methodological blocks, which include qualification, linguistic and cultural, linguistic and translation blocks. The qualification methodological block is a selection of relevant empirical material and general characterization of the phenomenon of the comic from the perspective of linguocultural, linguistic, and translation studies aspects of the incongruity of the English anecdote and supposes the method of continuous sampling. Further, the study of crosscultural incongruity caused by the ethnocultural features of the conceptual worldviews of the English and Ukrainian peoples presupposes the use of methods of linguocultural analysis constituting the linguocultural methodological block: the method of cultural and historical analysis, linguocultural analysis, interpretive and textual analysis, conceptual analysis, comparative analysis. Cross-cultural incongruity caused by the systemic and structural features of the linguistic world pictures of Englishmen and Ukrainians determines the use of methods of linguistic analysis in the linguistic methodological block: methods of contextual, distributive, component, and linguostylistic analysis. The study of the means of translation of verbal means of creating the comic in the translations of anecdotes into Ukrainian determines applying translational and transformational analysis which constitute the translation methodological block. The article argues that using the described methodology consisting of four methodological blocks (qualification, linguocultural, linguistic, and translation ones) allows us to draw the regularities in solving the problem of cross-cultural incongruity when translating English anecdotes into Ukrainian, thus connecting the type of incongruity with the means of its representation in translation.

Abstract:
The main goal of the presented article is the analysis of M. M. Sokolov’s methodological conclusions about O. O. Potebnia’s scientific legacy from the point of view of their objectivity and faithfulness, particularly, to what extent the true achievements and drawbacks of O. O. Potebnia’s historic and phonetic works have been rendered. The tasks of the research included the following: to explain the meaning of M. M. Sokolov’s statements concerning the interpretation of O. O. Potebnia’s views on the genetic ties between languages, the phonetic laws and analogy. There has been also made an attempt to assess M. M. Sokolov’s definitions from the point of view of modern methodology, linguistic historiography and comparative linguistics. In our opinion, the suggested by M. M. Sokolov critical review of O. O. Potebnia’s views on the genetic ties between the languages, the phonetic laws and analogy is one-sided and simplified. The findings of the research have proved that the interconnection between the East-Slavic and Old Slavonic languages was described in O. O. Potebnia’s works from the point of view of the comparative historic method. O. O. Potebnia studied the interconnected phonetic laws which in his interpretation were postulated as exact, true not only for separate sounds but also their features (the conception of the “qualitative consonant shifts”). The critical review of M. M. Sokolov ’s judgments was predetermined by the fact that the scholar treated O. O. Potebnia’s historic and phonetic legacy not from the point of view of historical linguistics but according to “the assimilation of the past”. The theses postulated by M. M. Sokolov didn’t reflect the views of other representatives of Moscow linguistic school. The perspective of the further research is seen in the more detailed study of O. O. Potebnia’s scientific legacy as well as views of other representatives of Kharkiv linguistic school in the context of the linguistics of XIX cent. — early XXІ cent.

Abstract:
Language use and spatial identity research are topics of interest in linguistics, geography, anthropology, ethnology, sociology, psychology, and philosophy. Accordingly, there are numerous related terms that originated in one discipline but are also used in other disciplines, making them multi-disciplinary. Research on terminology in the field of language use has shown great diversity (linguistic geography, areal or spatial linguistics, linguistic geography, the geography of language, geolinguistics). The paper analyzes and defines the aforementioned concepts, their connection with individual disciplines, and discusses individual terminological shortcomings. The aim of this paper is to review the field of research regarding the use of language and spatial identity in a broader sense, and especially the position of and approaches to research within historical geography. The paper analyzes a sample of 124 articles (published mainly in Croatian and English) according to author(s), research objective, methodology, and period of publication. Based on this, three characteristic periods during which research developed and changed have been distinguished.

Abstract:
Case study research has played a very important role in applied linguistics since the field was established, particularly in studies of language teaching, learning, and use. The case in such studies generally has been a person (e.g., a teacher, learner, speaker, writer, or interlocutor) or a small number of individuals on their own or in a group (e.g., a family, a class, a work team, or a community of practice). The cases are normally studied in depth in order to provide an understanding of individuals’ experiences, issues, insights, developmental pathways, or performance within a particular linguistic, social, or educational context. Rather than discuss constructs, hypotheses, and findings in terms of statistical patterns or trends derived from a larger sample or survey of a population of language learners, as in some quantitative research, a qualitative case study of a person presents a contextualized human profile. Case study has contributed substantially to theory development, generating new perspectives or offering a refutation or refinement of earlier theories in applied linguistics by analyzing linguistic, cultural, and social phenomena associated with children, adolescents, young adults, and older adults. In recent years, the purview of case studies in applied linguistics has expanded to include many previously underrepresented topics, linguistic situations, theoretical perspectives, and populations. This article provides an overview of some traditional areas of coverage and then newer foci in terms of methodology, thematic areas, and findings pertaining to language learners in transnational, multilingual, and diaspora contexts especially.

Abstract:
The focus of this research is in the area of the relationship between linguistics and the Victorian literature. Such a study is important in order to demonstrate how the masterpieces of Victorian literature possess the potential to be studied according to the principles of linguistics and how the motives behind many characters’ activities can be determined by recourse to linguistics. The findings from this research provide evidence that all human activities follow the same rules which all the human languages are based on and according to which they all function due to their common root in the human mind. The main conclusion drawn from this study is that linguistic principles can constitute a great methodology for determining the real motives behind many activities done by the humans. This paper recommends that linguistic principles can be an excellent methodology by means of which the researchers can study the literary works of other eras in the English literature.

Abstract:
Repeatedly in recent years, phylogenetic analyses of linguistic data have reached the world's leading scientific journals, but in ways hugely controversial within linguistics itself. Phylogenetic analysis methods, taken from the biological sciences, have been applied to date and track how major language families dispersed through prehistory, with implications also for archaeology and genetics. As this approach is extended to ever more language families worldwide, this review offers methodological perspectives and cautionary tales from the most high-profile and hotly disputed case of all: Indo-European. This article surveys the checkered history of these phylogenetic methods and of the cognacy databases they have relied on for their linguistic input data. It clears up cross-disciplinary misconceptions about this new methodology, identifies major flaws in the current state of the art (hence its highly inconsistent results), diagnoses the causes, and outlines new solutions that might bring the field closer to living up to its potential.

Abstract:
This study aims to review the scope of linguistic research, highlighting the various branches and approaches used in the study of language. Linguistic research is a multidisciplinary field that includes the analysis of language structure, use, and its role in society. In this paper, we discuss some of the main branches of theoretical linguistics, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. In addition, we also explore applied linguistics which involves the application of linguistic theory in practical contexts such as language education, translation, and language technology. Interdisciplinary approaches in linguistic research, which combine perspectives from psychology, anthropology, and computer science, are also a major focus of this study. We highlight the importance of appropriate methodology in linguistic research, including qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as the use of modern analytical tools such as linguistic software and natural language processing techniques. The results of this study indicate that a comprehensive understanding of the scope of linguistic research can make a significant contribution to the development of linguistics and its applications in various fields. These findings are expected to provide insights for researchers, practitioners, and educators in designing more effective language studies and teaching programs.

Abstract:
With the rapid proliferation of computerized language corpora, modern linguistics is becoming more data-driven and corpus-based, and quantitative linguistic research is gaining popularity. The methodology for linguistic analysis is being improved, and statistically reliable tools are being actively employed to test scientific hypotheses and theories. Cognitive-quantitative construction grammar is a new interdisciplinary study field that results from the integration of qualitative and quantitative linguistic approaches. Drawing on research from various linguistic fields, this framework comprehensively studies general and idiosyncratic features of language constructions – ‘form-meaning’ pairings. This article provides an overview of a number of quantitative corpus-based methods that can be used in cognitive-quantitative construction grammar research to establish distinctive linguistic parameters (factors) of form and meaning of complex clause-level constructions. Clause-level constructions are distinguished by a set of linguistic parameters and factors that determine the specificity of their form (morphosyntactic, relational, referential, positional, syntactic-functional, distributive, etc.) and meaning/ function (collostructional, semantic, communicative, etc.). To determine distinctive parameters of the form of a construction, specialized quantitative corpus methods can be employed: 1) one-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA), 2) multifactor analysis of variance (MANOVA) and 3) post-hoc test by Tukey's multiple comparison method. To identify distinctive parameters of construction's semantics, the method of collostructional analysis can be utilized. By integrating corpus linguistics and quantitative studies, a new level of comprehension can be attained, which makes it possible to analyze linguistic data more accurately. Quantitative corpus-based methods should be considered an effective tool for construction grammar research, allowing linguists to move beyond intuition and gain a deeper understanding of the complexity of language phenomena.

Abstract:
The article discusses the directions, scientific and methodological foundations of linguistic research of the first linguist in Kazakh linguistics A. Baitursynov. It was noted that his research in the field of linguistics was carried out by a structural-cognitive method; it was also explained that the concept of research was aimed at analyzing language in a natural way. Thanks to the recognition of the direction of the scientist's research, the theory of the "dominant side" of the main members of the sentence, the theory of the "contextual predicate" expressed by the zero category was formulated in his work. As a result of the conducted research, it becomes clear that the methodology of A. Baitursynov's linguistics was justified by separate research and methodological, philosophical, natural science (cognitive) research methods. The scientist's work reflects the instrumental method of methodological research; the method of distributive analysis; the method of scientific sensitivity (scientific intuition). As a result of such methodological justifications and methods of methodological research, we were convinced that the linguist in his work formed a metalanguage basis that is used in the modern Kazakh language. The article also discusses the methods of methodical teaching, language methods used by the researcher in his work on linguistics, through practical analysis, interpretation, generalization, and also discusses the essence of the research results.

Abstract. The paper is focused on relevant directions in modern Russian Linguistics. It is the continuation of the 2019 publication where the ideas of Pedagogical and Anthropo-Oriented Linguistics, Political Communication Studies and Theological Linguistics were introduced. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the expanding horizons of the science about the language of the 21st century. The particular sections of the text characterize the goals of modern linguistics, its key concepts, objectives and methods currently employed in the sphere of studying language and real discursive practices. The methodology of the research consists in describing new research paradigms. Such paradigms are objectively formed in the course of progressing scientific activity; their changes are triggered by the evolution of society, its socially valuable demand to upgrade not only science but also its educational system on the basis of certain conceptual, value, methodological and technological beliefs. The idea behind this paper is to help teachers to make sense of a big variety of modern linguistic ideas and opt for those which they can use to develop innovative approaches to teaching Russian.

Abstract:
The relevance of the research is due to the importance of forming a scientific linguistic picture of the world in the Russian language lessons as a cognitive component of the students’ linguistic worldview and to the need of developing linguistic-methodological foundations to achieve this aim. The aim of the study is to identify and describe the patterns of forming the scientific linguistic world picture in the process of teaching Russian in secondary schools. Theoretical analysis of scientific literature, observation, pedagogical experiment were used as scientific methods. The scientific publications on cultural linguistics, cognitive linguistics, theory and methodology of teaching the Russian language were the research materials. The definition of the concept “scientific linguistic picture of the world” is given in relation to the tasks of teaching the Russian language. The authors revealed that the formation of the scientific linguistic picture of the world is formed through learning new words and concepts as a result of observation, analysis and interpretation of language phenomena from linguistic positions during categorization and conceptualization primarily at the lexical level. The formation of scientific linguistic world picture is based on the knowledge, skills and abilities acquired at Russian language lessons and, to a certain extent, is set in the guidelines of the textbook authors. The main didactic means of forming the scientific linguistic world picture is the scientific linguistic text. The leading method of forming the scientific linguistic world picture is cognitive linguistic tasks, including comparative ones. Prospects for further study of the problem lie in developing a methodology for forming a scientific linguistic world picture at Russian language lessons on the basis of various sections of linguistics.

Abstract:
Abstract As an introduction to the special issue, this paper presents an overview of previous corpus linguistic work in the field of language and sexuality and discusses the compatibility of corpus linguistic methodology with queer linguistics as a central theoretical approach in language and sexuality studies. The discussion is structured around five prototypical aspects of corpus linguistics that may be deemed problematic from a poststructuralist, queer linguistic perspective: quantification and associated notions of objectivity, reliance on linguistic forms and formal presence, concentration on highly frequent features, reliance on categories, and highlighting of differences. It is argued that none of these aspects rules out an application of corpus linguistic techniques within queer theoretically informed linguistic work per se and that it is rather the way these techniques are employed that can be seen as more or less compatible with queer linguistics. To complement the theoretical discussion, a collocation analysis of sexual descriptive adjectives in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) is conducted in an attempt to address some of the issues raised. The concluding section makes suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
This article offers a corpus linguistics methodology (i.e., guiding the collection of language-based qualitative data, queried with both qualitative and quantitative methods, and mixed analytical approaches) as a unique and practical advance in the conversion mixed methods design. The conversion mixed methods design takes qualitative or quantitative data, and reforms, queries, or analyzes that data using a converse qualitative, quantitative, or mixed method. I argue that the design is uniquely suited to maximize the interlinking of language-based data within strands, as well as in cross-strand comparison. The article focuses on several concepts in corpus linguistics, specifically collocation (i.e., multiple words appearing together), semantic preference (i.e., the tendency of those words to appear in certain contexts), and semantic prosody (i.e., the sociocultural meaning of those words in that context), and covers both conceptual background and procedures for carrying out analyses. Further, the approach demonstrates the utility of more fluid design description by focusing on the timing and purpose of integration. I articulate this argument by outlining a study on the opioid epidemic in elderly health services in rural Pennsylvania, with the help of a zipper metaphor to describe the design. The article concludes with a discussion of the value of this advanced design to mixed methods researchers representing the social sciences outside of linguistics-centered disciplines, at a methodological level, as well as the ready availability of tools that allow researchers to instrumentalize the design.

Abstract:
Q methodology, an approach to inquiry on the subjective views about a complex phenomenon/issue which has been increasingly employed in a wide range of social science fields has not yet been applied in language learning and teaching research. It is a unique approach that has characteristics of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The purpose of the present paper is to introduce Q methodology as an alternative approach and demonstrate its potential to respond to the needs of the field that has been expanding in its epistemological diversity since the social turn (Block, 2003; Ortega, 2012). The relevance of the methodology for SLA research will be discussed with a particular focus on the parallels between the development of the methodology in the 1930s and current criticisms towards the traditional cognitive approach in SLA. Using a published study (Irie & Ryan, 2014), the author explains how the focus on the holistic understanding of subjectivity is built into the procedure. Suggestions for possible areas of research and teaching in which Q methodology could be applied are discussed.

Abstract:
Despite great value of research into visual impairment (VI), there is a dearth of empirical studies in linguistics investigating the extent to which the sense of seeing impacts language development, processing and production. The lack of methodological rigour in previous studies as well as large diversity of the population, small incidence of visual impairment and little awareness of blind people’s needs make this field of study challenging for researchers. This article presents and discusses the most challenging aspects of performing experimental studies in the field of VI. The overarching aim of this paper is to guide good research practice which ensures robust and unbiased experimental design and at the same time respects individuality of people with VI.

Abstract:
Research methodology is determined by theoretical approaches. This article discusses methods of multilingualism research in connection with theoretical developments in linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and education. Taking a brief glance at the past, the article starts with a discussion of an issue underlying the choice of research methodology: the distinction between bilingualism and multilingualism. This is followed by an account of the way in which traditional methods of research diverge and have expanded to include additional methodologies, which are shown to accommodate new theories and the most recent data in the field. Special attention is paid to the emerging research directions employing methods of conceptualization. Overall, the paper presents a review of the current state-of- the- art including an account of the latest trends in research methodology on bilingualism and multilingualism, as well as a looking-forward analysis of the challenges and potential future methodological developments in the field.
