Full textGarin and Gerbert show the idea of conflict between two lignages. The kinship constantly nourishes the stories and constitute one of the springs of the narrative's dynamic. It is important then to discern its textual manifestations, its modes of organisation in the social system of the story and to determine its impact on the general economy of the text. We propose a study of kinship that relies on the analysis of vocabulary and utilizes methodological tools of anthropology. The first part deals with vocabulary. The analysis of terms of personal relationships shows the preminence of consenguinity, the unconcerned character of kinship, the preference of stories for male relatives. The study of collective terms has shown that they can be used under a nominal form to refer to the protagonists or under a prepositional form to indicate the membership and/or the social quality of characters. This allowed us to notice that the majority of these words point out diverse realities : a grouping concrete or virtual of relatives and friends or simply of relatives, an abstract collectively founded on kinship. The second part aimed at the investigation of kinship starting from narrative datum. We pondered on relationships between the protagonists, on representations and practives related to ancestors and marriage, to kin's material, human or symbolic goods, to mechanisms that govern his functioning. It appeared that characters express themselves and are apprehended specially as consanguines. Links other than those between consanguines are due to the character's will to maintain positive relationships with other social entities. The matrimonial alliances, the baptismal kinship and the vassalage are seen as agreements (of non-agression) between two groups traditionally anamies or as active alliances that have been reached with a well defined pirpose. This study has shown in the social universe of the two stories the existence of a kinship system globally conform to the historical reality. It has also revealed a differnet use of kinship's datum for each poem

Full textMarriage in India is considered as a stage of life and a mandatory rite of passage in social discourses. It is of capital importance also because it provides for a form of social security through the kinship network that it generates. In its legitimating role, it is subject to evolution and reflects social conflicts between communities and the State. The question of mixed marriages refers to that of belonging and that of drawing borders between “us” and “non-us”. Even though they are portrayed as being different, deviant, transgressive of the endogamous norm, mixed marriages in India (as elsewhere) have always existed. This research presents a cross-analysis of the instituting discourses on marriages in India and the narratives of marriages collected during fieldwork. How does the norm of endogamy emerge in discourses? Do all mixed couples face parental opposition? How do the speakers name their own marriage? Which categorisations do they use toidentify and to distinguish themselves from others? What kind of adjustments do the spouses undertake in mixed marriages? Which choices emerge as being important in their conjugal life and from the point of view of their children? These are some of the questions which this study tries to address

Full textNowadays in africa, the power issues, if not always, at least very often from the authority which is administered by a small group "aside", so that between civil and political society there is a distance, and even a deep moat. In this context, there is ground for wondering whether, some vital elements of the very mind of the traditional power - especially among the rustic and lineous societies - are not neglected, forgotten or even declined by the modern power. It seems to be the case, if we examine the crisis inside the african states, that vacillante between totalitarism and democracy. As things are, it seems necessary for us to remember some fondamental values, on which the traditional societies relied to become really mistresses of their destiny, and that it could be possible now to integrate in whole the nation. These values can be perceived essentially in three different poles, and real places of authority: the kinsfolk, the village and the socio-religious institutions, in which the holy and the legal things compose both the legitimation of the authority. It this that synergetic triptic we tried to analyse among the lyelae, through the representations and the fundations of the authority first, then, in second time, by the writing up and the exercise study of the religious, legal and political authorithy

Full textThe aim of this research is to study some theoretical elements in linguistics, anthropology and psychoanalytic psychopathology regarding adolescent's language use. We propose some research directions for a psychoanalytic understanding of the way some adolescents use language, based on observations of adolescents and young adults in clinical contexts (Paris, and Saint-Denis). Even if language during adolescence is hard to define epistemologically, we have been able to observe specific manifestations at different stages. This language is not generalized during adolescence: it changes from a subject to another, depending on social context, cultural origins and the language representations involved for each one of them. "Metamorphoses" are signals of a personal conflict emerging during adolescence period. They are the revealing marks of a pain provoked by the encounter between the subject and the psychic adolescence period. The "metamorphoses" of adolescent's languages are articulated (verbal) marks but also non-verbal ones (intonation, position, gestures). They are the ludic signs of appropriation, sometimes close to the acting out and also to pragmatic utterances. Metamorphoses are, in principle, doomed to disappear through time and they don't need any particular psychotherapeutic aid

Full textThe study relates to an essential act of re-designation, to give a new proper name to people in a minority situation. This French-speaking community of Louisiana is indicated by an ethnonymic paradigm of a score of spelling variants which can be reduced to four concurrent series: Cajun, Cadien, Acadian, Cadjin, then with the problematical ethnonymic pair Cajun/Cadien. It is this denominational fluctuation which we will examine because each ethnonymic meaning is associated with specific representations which build ethno-linguistic identities of the group which are different and even competing. This process of redenomination which is supposed to revalorize the community’s image is certainly legitimate in a context of a withering language and culture but this nominative Babel, this “disease of the proper name” called “ethnonymic dystropia” has a double cost, meta-psychological and sociological, subjective and identity. We are witnessing a “symbolical forcing” because a “re-naming of one’s self” must be subjective and not imposed, it should rather have an effect as a reference designator, an indication of a community recognition and of an identity recognition, and also an indication of a subjective meaning which belongs to what Jacques Lacan calls “lalangue” which is the subject of the subconscious and desire that is speaking. It is by an operation of subjectification that the cajun/cadjin subject will be able to identify itself as a cadien subject and this process seems to be energized today in Louisiana by the rebirth of a poetic writing which promotes the ethnonym Cadien by the means of a system of inter-subjective enunciation full of affect, which opens the reader to a possible ethnonymic identification

Full textLanguage and culture are inhabited by the concept of intergenerational and transgenerational transmission. Therefore, the cultural and linguistic transmissions are inherent in all people and all societies. However, the terms of these differ according to the generations and territories.Martinique is a French department overseas who would not rid the throes of colonization. A former French colony, its slave past challenges the current education system in Martinique. The abrupt transition from a traditional to a modern society is actually an acculturation Creole language and culture and assimilation to the language and French culture. This has caused a culture of resistance that is similar to the hills in the time of plantation society. Traditional cultural practices reflect certain forms of resistance: the bèlè is both a dance and music dating back to the colonial period; while the round skiff is a practice dating from the post-colonial society. Become iconic in Martinique, these practices were media claims of Martinican culture. They are subject to a reappropriation today; which causes a change in their modes of transmission and officials in charge thereof.Two methods exist to Martinique: an informal transmission that falls within traditional education and formal transmission whose codification is that of modern society. This raises the problem of transmission. Some analytical logic clearly demonstrates that the bèlè and the round yawl is acquired by imitation in rural areas and are learned within the national education and associations. It is the same for the Creole language: it remains a mother tongue for some, by way of acquisition or evolve as a second language for others through learning. Furthermore, transforming a language spoken in a language of writing leads to a loss in the transmission process. It is the same for traditional practices. However, any loss involves appropriation of language and culture. Thus, both in the language of traditional practices, new language and linguistic forms are trying to generalize through the formal evaluation. These new modes of expression seem to modernize not (dance), gestures (technical) and highlight the lexical, syntactic and semantic features to be adapted to the European Framework of Reference for Languages (EFRL). The transmission then becomes a concept traditionality in modern and modernized world. It concerns all agents: they fall within traditional education that modern education

Full textUsing North American anthropology and European ethnolinguistics in a combined approach, this thesis studies Inuit neological activity undertaken in concerted action, called taiguusiliurniq. The first part examines diachronically the relations of power as regards language maintained over centuries between the Inuit of Eastern Arctic Canada and explorers, whalers, merchants, missionaries and finally with the administration; all of these making up the background on which arose the professions of interpreters and translators working with Inuktitut, along with the early days of institutionalized neology. The second part deals with the emergence of the terminology specific to the public sphere and to the challenges of its standardization in legal, technical, linguistic and cultural terms. The last part offers a careful examination of this terminology, fueled by data extracted from the creation of a lexicon and by a detailed description of a terminology development workshop. In a synthetic format, recurrent verb and noun roots along with affixes are highlighted, as well as choices regarding modes of designation, and the current challenges of Inuit language as a specialized language in a context where speech plays a part in the perpetuation of the relations of power and authority as regards language. Developed as a matrix, the trilingual analytical lexicon (Inuktitut-French-English) placed in the appendix is designed as an analytical tool meant to feed the lexicological reflection that Nunavut Inuit language professionals are engaged in. Full textBrittany is divided by a language boundary that has historically separated Lower Brittany, where the Celtic language of Breton is spoken, from Upper Brittany, where people speak the Romance language of Gallo. In the border zone, this linguistic difference is used in support of stereotypical representations of the Other and his/her language. Although the boundary has long been instable, although exchanges have always taken place, and although family histories frequently mix people originating on either side, discourses have long invoked two groups constituted as hermetic: “Bretons” and “Gallos.” By creating a readily visible axis of alterity, the linguistic boundary permits people on either side to differentiate themselves from their neighbors and, simultaneously, to identify with their own group. Analyses of these representations reveal a marked asymmetry, clearly in favor of Lower Bretons and the Breton language, while Upper Bretons and Gallo are often ignored, or even made objects of open disdain. This asymmetry corresponds to an overvaluation of Lower Brittany in discourses about Breton identity, which frequently leaves Upper Brittany elided. At present, these longstanding representations continue to influence practices, Gallo being the object of less social mobilization and its speakers receiving less assistance in reversing language shift. The border is the source of tensions at the heart of Brittany’s language revitalization movement, whether one considers it to be obsolete or uses it to gain respect for a territory or to claim language rights

Full textAfter several decades of language loss, some first nations are now reclaiming their ancestral language. This is the case of the community of Wendake which has started in 2007 the Huron-Wendat language revival project named Yawenda. This qualitative case study focuses on linguistic ideologies that come into play when a handful of community members decide to give a second breath of life to their ancestral language. Using interviews and observations, we have gathered data on the challenges and ideologies linked to the Wendat language transmission at the Ts8taïe Elementary School. This study aims to achieve an ideological clarification in order to support the Wendat language revival efforts.

Full textDeriving from the observation of an accentuated lack of learning of French as a Foreign Language in a secondary school in Greece, this research attempts to question the relation between the notions of “learner” in the official curriculum and the “real student”. Disciplinary discourse claiming modernisation of the educational system through a communicative doctrine construes the “learner” in generic terms as supposedly bearing a functional relationship with language, being an active participant and an actor in every communication situation. On the other hand, the “real student” can be comprehended through the observation of his acting and interacting with the institution and by listening to his words, those of a simulacrum of a student faltering in the margins of learning. In such a context, the process of teaching and learning French acquires particular significations. Due to its “foreignness”, the French language potentially constitutes a symbolic space for someone being a student, a student participating in the learning process through the emergence of his subjectivity in speech. On the condition that the teacher considers the student beyond the curriculum and by being involved himself as a subject in forming relations between the disciplinary discourse and classroom activities. To accept and to express the passage between the negativity of the student's learning and the emergence of a real learner marks the student’s consideration as being a subject in the process of teaching

Full textThis thesis proposes a detailed analysis on the dynamic of change observed among the Baka from Gabon, a hunter-gatherer community. This group is composed of less than 1000 individuals speaking an Ubangian language inside a Bantu environment. By comparing their language with others from the same linguistic sub-group, some singularities from Baka and some resemblance with the Monzombo sub-group can be seen. These two ethnolinguistic groups, Baka and Monzombo groups, seem to have kept close contact based on skill exchanges (hunting/gathering and fishing/iron skills). This interaction is witnessed in the exchanges the Baka population preserves with their current Bantu neighbors, especially with Fang in Gabon.Nowadays, the Baka way of life is still characterized by their mobility and the forest. Nevertheless, due to a non-migratory lifestyle imposed by the State, the proximity with the Fang group and the growing globalization, dramatic changes are inflicted to the Baka community. Changes at which they are trying to adapt. These constraints do not affect only their language (system and use) but also many sociocultural habits such as settlement, mobility, food and means of support or religion.The aim of this thesis is to identify these ongoing transformations, to describe and to evaluate their impact bearing in mind the singularity of many contexts. An argumentative reflection on categorization principles is also proposed on lexical domains such as fauna, flora and diseases. Certain changes could arise without necessarily questioning their bonds to the forest and ancestral values. Nonetheless, both exogenous (globalization and a sedentary life) and endogenous pressures (individual behavior and culture transmission) determining the progress of different transformations should not be under evaluated as being a threat to the language, to the knowledge of the flora and fauna and to certain sociocultural practices

Full textOur thesis is a contribution to different complexes of research literature - human computer interaction, computer mediated communication - in a bilingual situation (Malagasy and French). Based on video recordings of chat room activities in several cybercafés of Tananarive (Madagascar), we analyze these activities as situated practices in a conceptual framework based on American linguistic anthropology. We also present the French field and particularly the intellectual J. Paulhan whose original analyses on Malagasy language have been so acute. Our ethnography of computer mediated communications is organized in the three main domains of research of linguistic anthropology: temporality, indexicality and linguistic ideology. We study interactional phenomenon due to the temporality of the organization of chat activities, also inscribed in specific spaces that we analyze in terms of sequential organization and participation frameworks. Our analysis bring it bear on focused description of three varieties of indexicality. First, the deictic system of locative in Malagasy is examined on the basis of the study of the usage of such pronouns in chat activities. Then, we study non referential index on the basis of our study of the enonciative particles in Malagasy chat. Finally, analysis of some contextualisation cues reveals the fundamental role of the metapragmatic dimension and demonstrate the process by which linguistic ideologies are constructed

Full textThe purpose of this work is to understand the emergence and affirmation of the Italian Occitan Valleys territory and the identity construction process that underlies it. Starting from a “proto-history” of the oc claim to a present ethnography, this research considers the claimed and / or visible representations of culture, identity and territory, and therefore the speeches and the practices of “identity entrepreneurs” that are primarily the occitanists. The demarcation of ethno-linguistic border, the creation and diffusion of symbols, the construction of a musical-choreographic heritage, as well as an Occitan architecture and an “imagined Occitan” language, are some of the processes implemented by the occitanists to this end. The institutionalization of the claim in the 1990s, which resulted in the enactment of a national law officially recognizing the “Occitan minority” (1999), also involved to lead the analysis of social and political uses of “heritage fund” developed by activists outside the protest groups. This last one has been therefore dedicated to territory development with a double identity and economic concern, through the implementation of a cultural and linguistic institutional policy, the creation of economic activities and labels with Occitan patterning, and the launching for tourism of a territory devoid of substantial elements of attractiveness and differentiation

Full textThis study aims at putting together a terminology case file in mathematics with a view to a French/Lyèlé bilingual education. This takes place in a context where elementary teachers in Lyèlé-speaking zones have difficulties identifying an appropriate language for the transmission of mathematical knowledge.This research is at the crossroads of two different domains: sociolinguistics and terminology. On the sociolinguistics front, the analysis focused on the representations of teachers on the topic of teaching languages and teaching practices. Terminology is a more practical field as the researcher is in an interventive research dynamic.Concerning the methodology employed, first we gathered the opinions of teachers regarding education; besides, most of the work was done following the socio-anthropological approach; in such a perspective, the researcher both mobilises his own teaching experience and progressively builds the glossary during his travels in the field.Treatment of the data (terms) was done following a terminological approach privileging the choice of linguistical units linked to basic mathematics: we compile the information relating to pronunciation, semantics, lexicology, etc., around a “star” term. The information in French and Lyèlé are supplied according to the star term.Finally, the approach used leads to the constitution of a French/Lyèlé lexicon; the researcher recommends using this study as a starting point to build other lexicons and curricula in other domains and in other Burkina Faso languages

Full textLiteracy practices in Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, and Igloolik, a smaller community located in the northern Baffin region, illustrate the daily management of bilingualism by the speakers of the new territory. From the learning of syllabics to social networking sites, a large range of individual experiences is discussed. They contextualize linguistic attitudes, which determine language choice according to the mode of expression. The marginality of Inuit language literacy is readily perceived in this portrait of practices, regardless of the vitality that the language may show orally. These limitations on the expansion of Inuktitut, in all possible domains of use, weaken the balance of an unavoidable complementary relationship with English. A study of the linguistic situation in Greenland shows a different reality, which raises several questions. Dialect diversity, lived experiences of urbanization, economical dynamics and identity mobilizations all have an influence on literacy practices. Conclusions are then drawn about the promotion of the Inuit language. Keywords: syllabic literacy, Nunavut, Inuit language.

Full textWhy do Malagasy teenagers in Malagasy territory talk to each other in a language other than malagasy in an informal situation ? Using theoretical tools based on linguistic ideology, this research aims to understand the linguistic dominance in a context linguistic coexistence in a school environment. A participatory observation in a french school in Antananarivo allowed to interact directly with students, teachers and various school officials.Whether in actual practice or in epilinguistic speeches, french language still holds the most important place, even when leaving the precincts of the school. This situation results from several influences : parents will, the desire for economic migration and the school objectives. As a result, adolescents try to display a perfect command of french to show their merit to continue their studies in France. However, there is a certain setback in which adolescents, for the same purpose, present themselves as poorly fluent in malagasy, yet a national language.French is considered as an economic opportunity, the language of employment, the language of the future. Some accuse French neocolonialism, others accuse Malagasy laxity. The teenagers are in a cultural interlude : not quite French and more truly Malagasy. While some adapt to the situation imposed on them somehow, others try to carry out a kind of conscientiousness guilt. Still others try to find their happiness in the situation of linguistic coexistence. From this last position comes the interdisciplinary research proposal for a transition from a situation of linguistic domination to an egalitarian situation of complementarity

Full textThese contributions to an anthropology of artistic practices in sign language associate thoughts on creative processes, works of art and audiences. Studying sign language "mises en scènes", in theater, in movies, on television, or online, requires a semiotic model that does not separate speakers and languages before undertaking analysis. I thus provide some insight on gesture studies and linguistic studies on signs in order to shed light on current epistemological and methodological issues in the study of human communication. From language to culture, I will also address the description of deaf people as a cultural and linguistic group by Deaf studies. Deaf studies are known in France but French works interrogating their very existence as a field are rare. Presenting the relationship between Deaf studies and disability studies will be another necessary step toward understanding the contemporary frameworks within which artistic practices in sign language are developing and spreading. Theoretical texts contributing to the institutionalization of artistic practices in sign language are also rare. This is why I dedicated myself to a thorough investigation of the "new directions and definitions" suggested by Dorothy Miles and Louie Fant in 1976, in the context of professionalization of "deaf theater" within the National Theater of the Deaf. I then present the NTD and the evolution of its creations to highlight its influence on the beginnings of the International Visual Theater in France.While artistic practices in sign language have been professionalized and entered public space through theatre, current popularity of "singing in sign language" has led me to question its practitioners' identities and the diversity of its forms. The study of sign language music videos has offered a case study to apply a multimodal analysis, taking into account staged languages, artists' identities and skills, artistic intentions and targeted audiences. Finally, within a signing art world, the study of festivals as reception context allowed me to document how evolutions of deaf/hearing interactions through the sharing of sign language contribute to the emergence of a "signing community"

Full textThe aim of this work is to show how art, literature and poetry make up a language theory. This point of view involves both subject and meaning activity, as theoretical, critical and problematical issue of social theories. Indeed social discourses enlight us on art activity. As meaning activity, works of art question actually thought conditions, language and its consequences on subject and society relationships. Works of art’s activity deal with research of historicity : they infer empirical discourses and theoretical confrontations. By language, this historcity supposes subject’s transformations and social experience. Through language, subject induces a way of making and becoming the other subjects. From Henri Meschonnic’s poetic, we assume that subject go beyond the scope of philosophy historicity : it exceeds individual or abstract representations, psychological ways of social sciences. Subjective anthropological activity takes place in the problematic matter of works of art and language, involves theoretical invention and critical situation of social values. Thus, art, stand by meaning unknown, constitute a physical way of language, questionning of theoretical hierarchies which use to organize subject and society’s relationships

Full textThis thesis is related to the field of sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. Its nature is descriptive and qualitative and deals with code switching between Uyghur and Chinese. The study is based on a corpus made of ethnographic, linguistic and conversational data, gathered in the city of Ürümchi, capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in 2012 and 2013, through field observations and recording of spontaneous conversation. The analyses focus on the structural characteristics of code switching, on its pragmatic and sociocultural aspects, as well as on the ideological value of this language practice. Because of the complex nature of the phenomenon as well as the historical and political context of Xinjiang region, this study inserts Uyghur-Chinese code switching in an interdisciplinary dimension. Therefore, it takes into account different factors, micro- and macro- of political and social nature, within them language policies brought by the government, the diglossic relations between Uyghur and Chinese, Ürümchi urban characteristics and the ethnic relationships between Uyghurs and Han Chinese. The study aims at presenting Uyghur-Chinese code switching as a complex language practice, in which come into play structural features, cultural and social changes, as well as construction identity dynamics

Full textOur research focuses on relations between African languages, identities and linguistic practices in migration situation and draws on the work lying in the fields of linguistic anthropology and sociology of immigration. From land conducted in three outbreaks of migrant workers in Montreuil, a suburb east of Paris region, we explore the methods employed by the residents of these homes to communicate with others in relation to the context and interlocutors. Ethnolinguistic vitality of a language as the Soninke, the contact of African languages among themselves and between them and the French (the language of the former colonizer and the host country) in the other workers hostels migrants, with all modes of appropriation and reconfiguration of the reception areas are central to our thinking

Bantu area is also covered by studying languages, peoples and civilisations. A particular accent is made on the historical epistemology in the context of the actual african historiography. So, the global effort leads to a systematic conceptualisation of african cultral history which is not yet carried out in africa. Being just a part of mankind history, african history must indeed receive a scientific treatment, so that the oral aspect of african history becomes a subject of interest in the general framework of mankind history. The problem of the africanity of ancient egypt cannot be dodged, and the socalled "chamito semitic" or "afro-asiatic" family is a false one because without any concrete, scientific basis. Full textEsta tese tem como objetivo geral compreender os processos enunciativos que permeiam a atividade de ensino de escrita em contexto acadêmico. Temos como objetivos específicos os três seguintes itens: 1º) Elaborar uma revisão bibliográfica de trabalhos sobre ensino de escrita no Brasil, em geral, e sobre ensino de escrita em contexto acadêmico, de forma particular, a partir de critérios de leitura de ordem enunciativa, oriundos do texto O aparelho formal da Enunciação, de Émile Benveniste; 2º) Definir processos enunciativos implicados em qualquer ato de enunciação, em geral, e contextualizá-los, de forma particular, para o ensino de escrita, em especial em torno do conceito central de indicação de subjetividade; 3º) Propor uma leitura antropológica dos processos enunciativos, em geral, e elaborar um conjunto teórico-metodológico para análise do ensino de escrita em contexto acadêmico, de forma particular, em especial em torno da relação entre as noções de língua e sociedade em viés enunciativo. Propusemos uma leitura enunciativa dos estudos sobre escrita no Brasil, a partir de quatro relações interlocutivas entre eu-tu/ele, a saber, formas reais, formas coletivas, formas imaginadas e formas individuais do discurso. A seguir, realizamos uma leitura da Linguística da Enunciação de Émile Benveniste, amparada em Flores (2013), de modo a compreender as relações interlocutivas a partir dos termos linguagem, língua, línguas e enunciação. Tal leitura nos permitiu perceber que o enunciado escrito ou oral do professor pode tanto se constituir como ‘indicação de subjetividade’ na reescrita do aluno, como corre o perigo de ser uma ‘representação da subjetividade’ do professor no texto do aluno. Por fim, a partir de uma discussão epistemológica sobre os ‘limites’ da linguística, deparamo-nos com a possibilidade de estabelecer uma leitura antropológica da Teoria da Enunciação de Benveniste, perspectiva elaborada a partir de nossa leitura de Dufour (2000), Dessons (2006) e Agamben (2005, 2008). Apresentamos também uma discussão teórica sobre o fazer metodológico nessa perspectiva, em especial as noções de corpus, transcrição e método. Com a proposição de que a noção de ‘cena’ e de ‘arquivo’ estão em relação dialética com a noção de ‘testemunho’ propomos uma forma de análise linguística e metalinguística do processo enunciativo envolvido no ensino de escrita. Em seguida, apresentamos uma análise do processo de ensino de escrita com dados colhidos em uma turma de Leitura e Produção Textual, disciplina do Primeiro Semestre do Curso de Letras da Universidade Federal do Pampa, sob minha regência no Primeiro Semestre de 2012. Concluímos que os alunos apresentam um satisfatório envolvimento com o processo enunciativo de ensino da escrita.

Full textThis research studies the singing named "khap" of Tai Dam ethnic group in Laos, through the notion of musical model. Its main objective, approached with the concept of relevance, is to highlight the competences linked to the singing, that is to say the abstract knowledge needed for the interpretation and the categorisation of "khap Tai Dam". The principle of musical model is the common theme of this research, and is the starting point of every chapter. Starting from musical considerations, this PhD highlights the mechanisms of musical transmission, the relationships between spoken and musical tones, as well as the different mechanisms of musical categorisation and identity categorisation. This work shows the interweaving of every of those aspects and the relevance of using different disciplines: musicology, anthropology and linguistic. The different lines of this work are approached with a perspective mobilizing etic and emic perspectives, and follow a methodology adapted to the specificities of the topic.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the leiwah of Eastern Arabia, a rite of possession practiced by the Zunûj, a population of slave descendants from the coasts of East Africa.During the last four decades, the cultural institutions of Eastern Arabian nation-states have presented the music and the dance of the rite of possession as a festive practice unrelated to possession, and participated in dissociating this rite from the regional history and the population practicing it.This thesis, which combines the study of written and oral sources with discourse analysis and an ethnography based on participant observation (11 leiwah rites observed in the Sultanate of Oman, 1 described in detail) shows that the leiwah can be understood only in relation to the history and original slave status of the Zunûj.First (chapters 1 to 3), this study reveals the historical depth of the leiwah and explores the various processes contributing to the invisibility of its ritual practice. It then shows (chapter 4) how the notions of spirit of possession in this population differ from the ones known in Islam as well as in zâr, another rite of possession described since the 19th century in the area (and in the Horn of Africa, Egypt, and Iran). Finally (chapters 5 to 7), the analysis of the execution of possession and the music in the leiwah rite (interactions, protocol, structure) reveals the existence of a ritual complex that has been interacting, for almost a century, with the cultural and religious Arab-Muslim norm surrounding it

The notion of polyvalence of legendary images, theorised by L. Gernet, lead to a better assessment of the most debated problem: the heroic identity of Ajax. Gestures, postures in the scenic space, ways of manipulating objects and speeches uttered by the characters are studied within the system of associations and connections both with the world of myth and of the social life of Athens. Particularly, Ajax' utterances draw a sort of linguistic journey, whose last stage is the creation of an heroic identity directly related to the athenian cult. The thesis is focused on Ajax as an actual performer, and stops therefore at his suicide (v. 865)

Full textThis participatory study on teaching languages in primary school aims to develop and test an experiential approach to English teaching and learning for beginners, based on the principle of gestural narration.This interdisciplinary research focuses on the concept of gesture as described by the linguistic anthropologist Marcel Jousse, put into practice by the theatre instructor Jacques Lecoq, embodied by Mark Johnson’s theory of image schemata in cognitive linguistics and confirmed by recent discoveries in neuroscience.In this teaching approach, gesture is the instrument, while traditional fairy tales provide the subject matter. Fairy tales were chosen because their narrative structure shares some of the characteristics of human motor behaviour (Jousse’s bilateralism) and because they are adapted to the mythic understanding of the world by children aged 6-8 (Egan, educational psychology).This approach was tested in a CE1 class (second year of primary school) during an entire school year. An analysis of student work and interviews assesses the impact of this experimental teaching approach on phonological and lexical language quality, on memorizing strategies, on pupils’ linguistic and gestural creativity/initiative, and evaluates the role of emotion and interaction in their learning

Full textBased on quantitative data, this study shows how essential negation is in the understanding of moralistique as a literary genre that can be identified as such through precise formal elements. I examine many aspects of negation, including the questions of scope, internal and external negations, restricted negation, forclusion, implicit negation, prefixal and lexematic negation and polarity scales. Not only is negation a linguistic scheme (involving various morpho-syntactic as well as lexical patterns) but it also works as a stylistic device which the moralists make a constant and specific use of. Whereas it is commonly held that negation is pragmatically ambiguous, I argue that, in focusing on the moralist as a spectator of society, the critiques have implicitly considered negation to be mostly descriptive. While correct, this interpretation should be qualified. The main aspect of the moralists’ negation rests in its polemical power. The moralists intend to rectify a biased use of words resulting from a false conception of moral values. Therefore, these writers do not say what things are as much as what they are not. From Pascal’s apophatic views, through La Rochefoucauld’s negative anthropology and Vauvenargues’ refusal of artificial morality, to Chamfort’s prenihilistic philosophy, negation appears as a new way to get a better understanding of the evolution of moralistique

Full textBased on ethnographic fieldwork on 'Uvea (Wallis, Western Polynesia), this thesis concerns the “art of storytelling” (fakamatala) in order to explore the way in which this activity inscribes the narrator and the enunciators in a shaped, experienced and lived spatio-temporal framework. It examines the conditions, modalities and effects of narrative practices, at a time when a series of transformations is profoundly changing local society, particularly the status of speech and the organization of land tenure which, with no land registry, relies on orality. A bilingual corpus containing a hundred oral accounts recorded, transcribed and then translated with Wallisians is presented in a second volume. In the wake of linguistic anthropology, this thesis regards the spoken arts as social performances, taking as its main theme the forms of expression used by narrators to link storytelling and staging. The topological approach developed makes it possible to encompass the different scales of analysis in order to consider the meaning of experiences and constitutes the theoretical tool used to examine the interactions observed and the narrative processes identified. This is how the subject studied will be seen, based on the case of Wallisian orators who make verbal art a powerful rhetorical and emotional vector in order to appropriate their language, land, and history, recalling the necessity of considering that storytelling is acting
