Abstract:
Quackery in medicine is as old as medicine. In times of crisis, desperate patients believe in extraordinary claims. In the annals of pain killer quack medicine, elixirs, nostrums and liniments hold a preeminent position. The College of Dentistry at NYU received a collection of 234 bottles of nostrums and liniments dating from approximately 1840 through 1940. This article highlights three sets of painkillers that contained morphine, opium or were considered being “electric or magnetic”. The exaggerated nature of the curative claims, the dangerous and addictive content of the drugs led the US Congress in 1906 to ban many of such substances and introduce The Pure Food and Drug Act. In spite of such measures, 100+ years later quack medicine is alive and well thanks to the internet and social media.

Abstract:
Methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) is widely available in many over-the-counter liniments, ointments, lotions or medicated oils for the relief of musculoskeletal aches and pains. Ingestion of methyl salicylate poses the threat of severe, rapid-onset salicylate poisoning because of its liquid, concentrated form and lipid solubility. Excessive usage of these preparations in patients receiving warfarin may result in adverse interactions and bleedings. Methyl salicylate in topical analgesic preparations may cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis and anaphylactic reactions. Physicians should fully appreciate the potential dangers from topical preparations containing methyl salicylate.

Abstract:
The direct selling industry has a long history, with roots snaking back to the nineteenth-century “Yankee peddlers” who roamed the countryside selling tools, teas, and liniments door-to-door. Its reputation has suffered from the prevalence of misleading and illegal schemes such as pyramids, which generate income by paying money or other compensation solely for the act of recruiting, charge high entrance fees, and sell products of questionable value. Nonetheless, some advocates note that direct sales work, which often involves family and flexible working hours, has provided an excellent alternative to the traditional bureaucratic employment relationship that has historically been less receptive to women.

Since the turn of the century, resourceful entrepreneurs have advertised a wide variety of purportedly simple and painless cures for cancer, including liniments of turpentine, mustard, oil, eggs, and ammonia; peat moss; arrangements of colored floodlamps; pastes made from glycerine and limburger cheese … [T]his historical experience does suggest why Congress could reasonably have determined to protect the terminally ill, no less than other patients, from the vast range of selfstyled panaceas that inventive minds can devise.[Individuals have] the right to be treated by a health care practitioner with any medical treatment (including a treatment that is not approved, certified, or licensed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services) that such individual desires or the legal representative of such individual desires. The makers of our Constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness. Dinha, Zen. "Clinical study of different liniments to prevent mastitis in cows." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för fysik, kemi och biologi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-161643.

Abstract:
Mastitis is one of the most frequent and costly diseases in the dairy industry. The sickness has been treated with antibiotics for decades, resulting in undesirable consequences for processors and consumers. Hence, it is vital to find a cheap and efficient solution for farmers to treat the cows before mastitis occurs or in early stages of the disease. The main purpose of this study was to understand the effect of liniments on cows and find one with high efficiency to prevent mastitis. Agricam is the first company working with early detection of mastitis. Although it is known that the use of cameras serves as a useful tool for an earlier attention to the problem and potential treatment28, no studies have been done before on liniment effect with this kind of technology until now. However, by analyzing currently existing data on a farm using Agricam liniment, it is possible to make conclusions if the liniment has had any significant effect. A normal distribution curve was performed followed by two-tailed t-test to compare the significant difference before and after treatment. The data was obtained on 100 individuals during a one-month period. Software programs Python 3.6 and Spyder 3.1.2. were used. The results showed that the data was normally distributed for all the data that was analyzed. The t-tests showed significant effects before and after treatment with liniment A and Agricam liniment for sick and healthy cows. Similarly, the test showed a significance in non-treated cows when analyzing the temperature differences. The significance indicates an increase of temperature in healthy cows and a drop of temperature in sick cows as a long-term effect. Same result is seen in treated cows as in non-treated cows (drop of temperature). With the current test analysis, it is concluded that there is no significant difference between non-treated, Agricam liniment treated and Liniment A treated sick cows. Same result was held for healthy cows treated with Agricam liniment and Liniment A, i.e. no significant difference.

Abstract:
Tagamet emerged as the first blockbuster drug when its sales exceeded $1 billion in 1986, three years after its introduction to the market. An anti–peptic ulcer drug, Tagamet was discovered by James W. Black and his colleagues at Smith Kline & French’s (SK&F) British subsidiary in Welwyn Garden City. Before Tagamet, SK&F was a little-known U.S. drug firm in Philadelphia. After Tagamet, SK&F became one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. The history of Tagamet is one of the most extraordinary in the annals of medicine. It is a saga of a drug that almost escaped detection because the research efforts that began in 1964 did not seem to produce results within the first 11 years! Smith Kline started as a humble drug store in Philadelphia in 1830. During the American Civil War, Smith Kline was founded as a small apothecary by two physicians, John K. Smith and John Gilbert on North Second Street. Not only was Philadelphia the birthplace of the United States of America, it was also the cradle of American pharmacy. Wyeth, McNeil, Rorer, and Warner-Lambert all trace their origins to small drug stores established there during the Civil War. In the 1880s, Mahlon N. Kline led the company into research and manufacturing of its own products. In 1891, it absorbed French, Richards & Co. founded by Harry B. French, creating Smith Kline & French. After its establishment, the company slowly expanded its inventory. By the 1920s, it had some 15,000 products ranging from aspirin to liniment. Their Eskay’s Albumenized Food was highly popular as a digestible food for infants and the disabled. Later, the company did very well with Eskay’s Tablets for Seasickness. Its specialty, Eskay’s Neurophosphates, a nerve tonic, soothed millions of people at home and abroad. In 1929, Smith Kline & French Laboratories was created to devote itself solely to research and development (R&D). During the Great Depression year of 1936, the company stepped up its efforts in R&D (in a recent contrast, many pharmaceutical companies stepped down their R&D investments during the last recession of 2008).
