Abstract:
The famous rock art in Alta was discovered in 1970 by Prof. Knut Helskrog, who also significantly contributed to the research of these sites. In one of the northernmost places of Europe, just on the road to the North Cape, this prehistoric World Heritage Site bears carvings from 500 BC - 100 AC. The largest site at Jiepmaluokta is open to the public as a museum. The petroglyphes are very well conserved and documented by Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques and photography. The images of single carvings are described with keywords and openly accessible via a website at altarockart.no/fotoweb. In recent years, Linked Open Data (LOD) as Open Access Strategy has become more and more common in archaeology. The CAA SIG on Semantics and LOUD in Archaeology (SIG-DataDragon), the Nomisma Project for numismatics, Linked Ogham Stones and other archaeological information are available on Wikidata as a secondary database. From these developments the idea arose to bring rock art to LOD and Wikidata following the idea of Volunteered Archaeological Information and the SPARQL Unicorn principles [10.5281/zenodo.3742185]. It is therefore our objective to publish the Alta rock carvings as LOD using Wikidata as a semantic publishing tool. The overall idea is to build up a Linked rock art hub like nomisma for coins, starting with publishing data in Wikidata, like the Research Squirrel Engineers have done in the Ogi Ogham Project [http://ogham.link] for medieval stones. In this paper we want to focus on initial modelling ideas and first implementations for Alta rock art in Wikidata.

"Reaching the Unreached: Providing Quality Care to HIV-Infected Children through Telemedicine—An Innovative Pilot Initiative from Maharashtra, India." International Journal of Pediatrics 2020 (October 23, 2020): 1–11. http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2020/6432476.

Abstract:
Background. The National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) of India created the Regional Pediatric Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Center; this was subsequently upgraded to seven Pediatric Centers of Excellence (PCoEs) to strengthen the quality of treatment and care of children living with HIV/AIDS (CLHAs). In October 2013, the pediatric HIV telemedicine initiative, an e-decentralized (care provided by local healthcare providers and support provided by a central agency through telemedicine facilities) model of expert pediatric HIV care and referral services, was established as a pilot project at the Pediatric Center of Excellence for HIV Care in Maharashtra. We designed the present study to compare management, compliance to ART, and mortality in children in the ART centers linked to the PCoE through telemedicine versus those that are not linked to the PCoE. Methods. It was a retrospective cross-sectional study of secondary data from CLHAs from October 2013 through August 2015 in the ART centers to document the intermediate outcomes and to determine if the initiative has improved the quality of care for the CLHAs enrolled in the linked ART centers with nonlinked ART centers. The centers in which the telemedicine sessions were conducted regularly were called linked-regular centers and in whom it was conducted irregularly (less than the median of 12 videoconference cases), it was called a linked-irregular center. Data from 2803 children in 31 linked (1365 in irregular and 1438 in regular centers) and 2608 children in 28 nonlinked centers were analyzed. The outcomes in children in the pre-ART group (ART naïve) were (1) alive on pre-ART, (2) lost to follow-up on pre-ART, (3) death during the pre-ART period, (4) eligible but not initiated on ART, and (5) missing baseline and latest CD4 counts. The outcomes of children on ART were (1) alive on ART, (2) lost to follow-up on ART, (3) death on ART, and (4) missing baseline and latest CD4 counts. Results. We found that a higher proportion of children in the linked-regular centers (79% vs. 70%, p < 0.001 ) and linked-irregular centers (76% vs. 70%, p = 0.04 ) was alive compared with that in the nonlinked centers in the pre-ART group. In this group, the proportion of children with missing baseline CD4 counts and latest CD4 counts was significantly low in linked (regular centers) centers. In the ART group, we found that a higher proportion of children in the linked-regular centers was alive compared with that in the linked-irregular centers (77% vs. 69%, p < 0.001 ); the proportion was not significantly different in nonlinked centers (77% vs. 78%, p = 0.56 ). In this group, the proportion of missing baseline CD4 counts was significantly lower in the linked-regular centers (3% vs 13%, p<0.001) and linked-irregular centers (1% vs. 13%, p < 0.001 ) compared with that in the nonlinked centers. Furthermore, the latest CD4 counts were missing in a significantly lower proportion of children in the linked-regular centers compared with those in the linked-irregular centers (6% vs. 18%, p < 0.001 ) and nonlinked centers (6% vs. 18%, p < 0.001 ). Conclusion. Our study shows that the centers linked through telemedicine performed better in terms of patient care and treatment, with a lesser loss to follow-up and lesser deaths in CLHA. Overall, this pilot project of telemedicine for pediatric HIV has been proven to be acceptable, feasible, and effective in improving the quality of care for children living with HIV across the state of Maharashtra.

Abstract:
This study was concerned with the question of which personality variables are most predictive of judgements of particular types of painting. One hundred and twenty‐one participants rated 24 slides of abstract, pop art, and representational paintings. They then completed two questionnaires which measured sensation seeking (SS) and the ‘Big Five’ personality dimensions. Thrill and Adventure Seeking was positively correlated with a liking of representational art while Disinhibition was associated with positive ratings of abstract art and pop art. Neuroticism was positively correlated with positive ratings of abstract and pop art, while conscientiousness was linked to liking of representational art. Openness to Experience was linked to positive ratings of all three art types. Agreeableness was negatively linked to liking of pop art. It was also found that art education and frequency of visits to art galleries were linked to positive ratings of abstract paintings. Regressional analyses showed about a fifth of the variance could be accounted for by personality and demographic variables. Personality variables were most strongly linked to positive judgements of representational art and least related to ratings of pop art. Overall the sensation seeking variables accounted for more of the variance than the big five dimensions. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:
The PHAROS consortium is adopting the Linked Art data model to make its descriptions of photo archives collections available as Linked Open Data to further support scholars in their research. Linked Art is both a community and a data model. As an international community, it works together to create a shared data model to describe art. As a data model, it is a data profile of the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model and using Linked Open Data techniques. The goal of Linked Art is to enable museums and developers to engage in LOD initiatives more easily by providing them with shared data modelling decisions and consistent design principles.

Zervos, Cassandra. "The effect of cross-linked learning on visual arts education." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2004. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/774.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined how computer technology had an effect on a Year 9 visual arts education class with regard to the Western Australian four Arts Learning Outcomes (WA 4ALO). The research was administered concurrently with a learning approach called Cross-Linked Leaming (CLL) (Zervos, 1997), which consisted of three components: (1) the subject (e.g., visual arts education in relation to the WA 4ALO); (2) the learner (i.e., a target group and how they learn); and (3) the tool (e.g., computer technology). This study addressed the problem of how to promote learning in visual arts education, especially with visual arts theory. Historically, students have preferred to make art than to study art theory subjects such as art history and art criticism/response. Furthermore, many students may have found, traditional ways of learning theory to be less engaging and stimulating than making art. For this study, a sample consisted of 19 female students from an independent secondary school in Perth for one school term. The students were divided into three groups for the three data collections methods: (l) the whole class completed pre and post-questionnaires; (2) five pairs of students participated in pre- and post-interviews; and, (3) nine students' art portfolios representative of different levels, of achievement, that were analysed at the end of the school term. The methodology was action research. Data was collected and interpreted to answer the primary research question through four sub-questions as follows: (1.0) What was the effect of CLL on students; (1.1) What were students' attitudes towards CLL; (1.2) What skills did students require for CLL; (1.3) What knowledge did students exercise with CLL; and (1.4) What were students' preferences for !earning with CLL?" The results showed that the three components of CLL had a predominately positive effect upon most students in terms of their attitudes, skills, knowledge, and preferences. Furthermore, the students showed a first preference for learning visual arts theory in a CLL framework reflecting a social constructivist and student-centered way of learning that included using, computers 75% of the-•time for visual arts theory instruction. This thesis demonstrates that CLL is an effective framework for the Year 9 visual arts students who participated in this study.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Michael Barnett
This dissertation documents the pilot year of an Art Science Program. This study asks: what is possible when we create learning environments modeled for the integration of theatre and other artistic media with science? What, in general, are the affordances of theatre and other art forms for fostering such meaning-making, what are good ways to make it happen, and what are the challenges? We analyze young learners’ participation and attitude changes in the context of the Art Science Program. Findings indicate that (1) access to identity resources impacts learners’ practice-linked identities (Nasir & Cooks, 2009); (2) face-saving behaviors impact practice-linked identities by inhibiting learners’ access to identity resources; (3) the development of practice-linked identities parallels the development of possible selves; (4) the extent to which a learner is able to engage in their learning as a “whole person” (Wenger, 2006) is correlated with a learner’s identity trajectory; (5) learners may fail to form new practice-linked identities despite robust access to identity resources; and (6) learners may succeed in forming new practice-linked identities despite lack of significant access to identity resources because the identity resources that they do access provide a strong hook into new, nascent practice-linked identities
Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2020
Submitted to: Boston College. Abstract:
Protein-protein interaction is considered as an important field of research, as it is the key to control variable cell processes and pathways. In eucaryotic cells, multidomain proteins (MDPs), which consist of more than one domain, take up over 70 % of the pool. Those identical or different domains of a MDP are connected to each other by a linker of variable length and flexibility. For long flexible linker, it allows the protein to sample a wide range of conformation and to adjust interaction in a subtle way. Despite numerous efforts of research on the field, some issues remain unanswered or require further investigation. As part of this thesis, my work aims to define the role taken by the intrinsically disordered linker within MDPs. For that purpose, the STAM2 (Signal transducing adapter molecule 2) protein of the ESCRT (Endosomal Sorting Complexes Required for Transport) machinery was chosen to examine the effect of the flexibility and dynamics of the linker regions on the molecular recognition with ubiquitin and Lysine63-linked di-ubiquitin (K63-Ub2). Such efforts were carried out by designing specific mutants altering the linker regions in different ways. The various truncated versions undergo half or complete deletion of a domain or have their linker either shortened, deleted or modified in the amino acid composition. With a combination of the several biophysical methods namely NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spin relaxation, SAXS (Small Angle X-ray Scattering) and CD (Circular Dichroism), the study has demonstrated that the alteration in the linker region modifies the flexibility and the dynamics of the protein, one among them possibly introduces slight change in conformation. Furthermore, the modification of the linker has an impact on the inter-domain motion and alter binding affinities between STAM2 constructs and di-ubiquitin without affecting domains integrity or binding sites. In brief, disordered linkers provide plasticity to the protein, which allow adaptability and specificity to molecular recognition process. As a further application, the linkers included in multidomain proteins could also be the next generation of druggable target as their modification may reduce or completely abolish interactions

Abstract:
This thesis examines converter topologies suitable for Module Integrated Converters (MICs) in grid interactive photovoltaic (PV) systems, and makes a contribution to the development of the MIC topologies based on the two-inductor boost converter, which has received less research interest than other well known converters. The thesis provides a detailed analysis of the resonant two-inductor boost converter in the MIC implementations with intermediate constant DC links. Under variable frequency control, this converter is able to operate with a variable DC gain while maintaining the resonant condition. A similar study is also provided for the resonant two-inductor boost converter with the voltage clamp, which aims to increase the output voltage range while reducing the switch voltage stress. An operating point with minimized power loss can be also established under the fixed load condition. Both the hard-switched and the soft-switched current fed two-inductor boost converters are developed for the MIC implementations with unfolding stages. Nondissipative snubbers and a resonant transition gate drive circuit are respectively employed in the two converters to minimize the power loss. The simulation study of a frequency-changer-based two-inductor boost converter is also provided. This converter features a small non-polarised capacitor in a second phase output to provide the power balance in single phase inverter applications. Four magnetic integration solutions for the two-inductor boost converter have also been presented and they are promising in reducing the converter size and power loss.

Fuller, Jeannette. "Are guilt and shame in male forensic patients linked to treatment motivation and readiness?" Thesis, University of Surrey, 2017. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/841667/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis includes the research, assignments and clinical placements that were undertaken for the degree of Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology). The Major Research Project was focused on the concepts of guilt and shame and treatment motivation and readiness in forensic patients. Treatment motivation and readiness are important considerations in forensic settings. Models and theories of these concepts suggest affective factors such as the experience of guilt and shame are likely to have some impact on motivation and readiness for treatment. These models have been validated in general forensic settings, but although applied to forensic mental health settings, the validity of the different aspects of these models has not been directly examined with forensic mental health patients. This thesis aimed to investigate whether there was any relationship between guilt and shame and motivation and readiness for treatment in a sample of forensic patients. Part one of this thesis presents a narrative review of guilt and shame in forensic mental health participants. The findings of the review suggested that guilt and shame were relevant emotional experiences for forensic patients. Links between these emotions and motivation and readiness for treatment had not been empirically tested. Part two presents an empirical paper that investigated the association between guilt and shame and treatment motivation and readiness in patients residing in forensic mental health settings. The findings suggested that offence-related guilt was associated with readiness for treatment, whereas shame did not have a relationship with motivation or readiness. Part three presents a summary of clinical experience gained within this training programme and Part four contains the assessments completed during training.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Genome-wide association studies have identified variants within the FTO (fat mass and obesity associated) locus as the strongest predictors of obesity amongst all obesity-associated gene loci. Recent evidence suggests that variants in FTO directly affect human adipocyte function through targeting IRX3 and IRX5 and thermogenesis regulation. Aim: We addressed the relevance of this proposed FTO-IRX pathway in adipose tissue (AT) of children. Results: Expression of IRX3 was higher in adipocytes compared to SVF. We found increased adipocyte-specific expression of IRX3 and IRX5 with the presence of the FTO risk haplotype in lean children, whereas it was unaffected by risk variants in obese peers. We further show that IRX3 expression was elevated in isolated adipocytes and AT of lean compared to obese children, particularly in UCP1-negative adipocytes, and inversely correlated with BMI SDS. Independent of BMI, IRX3 expression in adipocytes was significantly related to adipocyte hypertrophy, and subsequent associations with AT inflammation and HOMA-IR in the children. Conclusion: One interpretation of our observation of FTO risk variants linked to IRX3 expression and adipocyte size restricted to lean children, along with the decreased IRX3 expression in obese compared to lean peers, may reflect a defense mechanism for protecting body-weight, which is pertinent for lean children.

Abstract:
Socioeconomic positions of individuals are clearly associated with the chances of living a healthy long life. In four empirical studies based on Swedish population registers, two topics are examined in this thesis: The relationships between different indicators of social position and mortality, and the importance of family members’ socioeconomic resources for the survival of the individual. The overall conclusion from the separate studies is that no single individual socioeconomic factor gives a complete picture of mortality inequalities. Further, the socioeconomic resources of partners and adult children are important in addition to the individual ones. The specific results from each study include that: I education, social class, social status and income are, to various extent, independently associated with mortality risk. Education and social status are related to women’s mortality, and education, social class, and income to men’s mortality. II one partner’s social position is related to the other partner’s survival, also when individual socioeconomic factors are statistically controlled for. In particular, men’s mortality is linked to their wives’ education and women’s mortality to their husbands’ social class. III adult children’s education is related to their parents’ risk of dying, also when both parents’ socioeconomic resources are taken into consideration. Further, the association between the offspring’s level of education and parental mortality cannot be explained by characteristics that parents share with their siblings. IV children’s social class and income are related to parental mortality, but not as strongly as the education of the children. There is no relationship between a mother’s own education and breast cancer mortality, while mothers seem to have better chances of surviving breast cancer if they have well-educated children.

At the time of doctoral defence the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 4: Manuscript

Abstract:
In 1454 the Sienese painter Francesco di Bartolomeo Alfei faced litigation from the Mercanzia in Siena for defaulting on a contract from one of the leading Franciscan confraternities in the city. Two fellow Sienese artists, Giovanni di Paolo and Sano di Pietro, had recently completed a new altarpiece for the same entity. Anabel Thomas considers how the two commissions were linked and questions why Francesco di Bartolomeo Alfei’s brief to fresco the confraternity chapel remained unfinished. In a wide ranging analysis of mainly unpublished records, focussing on the artist’s association with key members of Sienese society, fellow artisans and government officials, Thomas concludes that Francesco di Bartolomeo Alfei might have honoured his contract had he not become immersed in the military strategy, diplomacy and visual propaganda of the Republic of Siena.

AbstractArt and science both involve creation and imagination and have been closely linked from the beginning of civilization. Activities during the Egyptian Kingdoms and the Greek world in both art and science have been preserved and reflect substantial achievements in design, form, and esthetics. The systematization of knowledge resulted in divisions between the disciplines which has taken time to understand and resolve. The contribution of art to the computer age is exemplified in the role of the data visualization artist, who now assist in the extraction of meaningful results from very large data sets. Artists have also used these complex images for their own artworks and exhibitions.

AbstractLuxury brands increasingly engage in art infusion in their marketing activities. While the positive outcomes these activities are linked to have been frequently discussed, the factors leading to these outcomes are not clear yet. This paper aims explore the mechanism through which positive outcomes from art infusion arise. We draw a connection to luxury brands’ perceived brand globalness and consumers’ acculturation to global consumer culture. To be specific, the indirect effect of perceived brand globalness on purchase intention through the serial mediation role of acculturation to global consumer culture and perceived luxuriousness is examined. A cross-sectional study was designed and a survey with a sample of 125 luxury consumers was launched, while the results confirmed our hypothesis. The study adds to the literature by explaining how acculturation to global consumer culture is linked to art infusion for luxury brands. Managerial implications and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:
AbstractThe understanding of the notion of ‘the past’ has undergone a complex development in recent years within archaeology and related disciplines. It continues to be interpreted in different ways and in relation to different types of evidence. Indeed, understandings of the conceptualisation of time itself has received an increasing amount of attention, both in relation to methodological and theoretical considerations as well as in terms of public and historical imaginations. In this paper, we explore these aspects in relation to the transformation of archaeological evidence into heritage in the context of European Palaeolithic cave art sites. We focus on the processes of the perception, creation, and imagination of time in relation to 3D replicas of two famous painted cave sites: Lascaux and Chauvet. Through our analysis, we demonstrate that these replicas are reflections of a modern, essentialist, and linear understanding of history, which is linked to a fascination with the notion of originality and related ideas of purity, authority, and wholeness. Engaging with the temporality of the replica also allows an understanding of the unstable character of these notions as the replicas simultaneously exist in (at least) two temporalities and the viewer’s engagement might oscillate between the two. While being wholly located in the present, the replica equally reflects human masterful abilities in the present and the deep past. Our analysis consequently allows to appreciate how the replica participates in the unstable and socially constructed temporalities of authenticity and originality.

Abstract:
The essay analyzes the impact of the reform of art. 2103 c.c., which linked the employer’s ius variandi to the collective bargaining’s classifications, on the obligation to employ the worker in different tasks to avoid dismissal (cd. repêchage). After criticizing the lack of attention of the legislator for the consequences of the 2015 reform, the work focuses on the effort made in the last contract renewals, that in many sectors have linked classifications to the professionalism of the workers, highlighting that these efforts do not seem sufficient to solve the problems posed by the reform of art. 2103 c.c. The pivot of the system is then identified in the obligation of training provided for under art. 2103 c.c. third paragraph, seen as a form of reasonable arrangement as those provided for by the UN Convention of 2006, EC Directive 2000/78 and national legislation. It is highlighted that the logical background common to all forms of adaptation of the organization aimed at avoiding dismissals is that of the resolution for excessive burdens referred to in art. 1467 c.c. On this basis, finally, the jurisprudence that identifies the limit of organizational adaptations useful to avoid dismissal in the possession by the worker of the professionalism necessary for the performance of the tasks of destination is criticized.

Abstract:
Abstract Precision agriculture is defined as a management strategy that gathers, processes and analyses temporal, spatial and individual data and combines it with other information to support management decisions according to estimated variability for improved resource use efficiency, productivity, quality, profitability and sustainability of agricultural production. This includes a wide range of technologies, many of which are linked to geographic information system technologies used to analyse spatial location and organize layers of on-farm data. Southern root-knot (Meloidogyne incognita), reniform (Rotylenchulus reniformis), Columbia lance (Hoplolaimus columbus) and sting (Belonolaimus longicaudatus) nematodes are significant problems on cotton in the US. Granular and fumigant nematicides have provided control when applied at uniform rates across fields pre-plant in-furrow or at-plant in-furrow at costs of US$148 and US$74 per hectare, respectively. Site-specific variable-rate (SSVR) technologies offer producers the potential to move away from uniform application rates and apply nematicides only to specific management zones in a field. The goal is to sustain yield levels while minimizing nematicide applications and thus increasing economic returns. This chapter discusses strategies for the development of management zones, evolution of application technologies needed for SSVR applications, assessment of nematode damage from multispectral images, and field experiences with site-specific nematode management. The economic importance of precision agriculture technology and future research requirements are also mentioned.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to show how painting, in Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), is an active expression of the Dutch painters madness, inner anxieties and social unease through the vigour of the sign and the brutal incandescence of colour. The pictorial material is a direct manifestation of the inner datum and becomes a means of exorcising the evil of living that consumed the artist. Within this work, we will consider how in the works of Van Gogh, forerunner of the expressionist language, creativity and madness coexist simultaneously. In his aesthetic operations, in fact, those unconscious processes emerge that are expressed through creative action. This study aims to demonstrate how, however, the state of madness manifested by the painter can lead, through logical processes, to the birth and production of creative objects. At the same time, however, the madness, linked to psychopathology, will result in a self-aggressive energy, negatively influencing his psyche, leading him into a depressive condition and subsequently to death. The present work, therefore, consists of a careful psychological analysis of the Dutch painters creative and at the same time destructive thinking, which led him to create works that would gradually reflect his state of mind and accompany him towards his end through increasingly textured and swirling brushstrokes.

Abstract:
The stock of the historical tenement houses is the major architectural heritage of Budapest, built largely during the long 19th century, a testimony to a prosperous period in the Hungarian history. These buildings are all unique, yet their massing over an area of 13 km2 forms a unified street and townscape. The purpose of the study is to analyze and create an architectural typology for this important heritage of the Hungarian capital. As main research methods, architectural measurements and GIS-based data gathering were used, the data processed by mathematical analysis. More than 2000 buildings were examined in various details to create basic typological schemes. The schemes defined in the research support the understanding and protection of heritage values. The examined data contains the mass and spatial design, including the site layout, the location of courtyards, the materials and structures, the principles of facade design and styles used. The latter, although closely linked to the building and underlying structures, deserves special attention, as these ornaments define the face of the building and therefore of the Budapest streetscape. As a main result, a summarizing visual matrix is introduced, with new stylistic terminology and periodization applicable to tenement buildings of Budapest. Concerning geometry, it was concluded that the frame-type, Neo-renaissance style tenements are most frequent of the stock, which projects the complex requirements for future large-scale rehabilitation.

Abstract:
Although the roots of the cyclical form can be traced back centuries ago, it was the 19th century that claimed the cyclical principle as its full manifestation. Closely linked to the concept of genre and its affirmation in certain patterns, the cyclical form was adopted by composers as a working tool to ensure the unity of a multipartite sonic organism by utilizing a common thematic material that can be found in several parts of the genre. This thematically charged entity can circulate at the macro-formal level in variants without major changes or it can be transformed at the melodic, rhythmic, harmonic or timbral level. Generally speaking, it raises the level of musical thinking and writing, demonstrating the composers skill and the complexity of his/her conception. It can also have an effect on the listener by increasing the emotional impact it can provide by reiterating symbolic themes. Beginning with Beethoven and continuing with Liszt, Franck, Berlioz and Tchaikovsky, this compositional technique is concretely applied as a conscious and premeditated act in musical compositions. The twentieth century and composers such as George Enescu extend the acceptance of cyclicity to the level of a principle generative of thematicism by developing an initial theme and metamorphosing it into a resource of rhythmic-melodic material for defining and shaping the other sound characters that fulfill a formal pattern. Thus, the edifice of a thematic entity enunciated in the first part of a work can become an inexhaustible resource and the embryo of several musical individualities, generating the thematicism of the other parts of the whole.

Abstract:
Abstract Monitoring of an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection with state of the art technology on two 436 feet high cooling towers with a surface area of 385,000 square feet has been carried out over the past nine months. The complex nature of monitoring eighty eight (88) control zones on each tower was only feasible by utilizing a combination of distributed DC power supplies all linked back to a main control unit by a two-tier, multi discipline network topology. In addition to operating the power supplies a total of seven hundred and twenty (720) reference electrodes are being monitored, with complete synchronization of current interruption to provide a true instantaneous off. The monitoring of the system included data logging of all the power supplies and embedded reference electrodes at a minimum of two readings per day. Depolarization tests were carried out automatically on a monthly basis and reports were produced on a quarterly basis for assessment of the system. This paper will look at the performance of the system during the first year of operation and the benefits of using state of the art equipment for this type of system in comparison to conventional transformer rectifiers.

Abstract The successful application of plastic liners for flowline corrosion control requires connector and termination technologies to link individually lined pipe sections. This review describes typical applications, installation procedures, performance and cost of the different connectors which have thus far been employed, both onshore and offshore, on lined flowlines. Possible future developments will be described. Onshore, the most economical and widely proven connection is the raised face flange type, constructed either using pre-manufactured PE flanges fusion welded to the end of the installed liner, or using the liner itself formed / flared around the face of the steel flange. Offshore, developments have centred on the need for lines to be reeled during installation. This has led to the use of welded connectors, in which liners are mechanically terminated either side of the tie-in welds, with alloy steel pup pieces providing corrosion resistance in between.

Abstract:
Abstract Although unfamiliar to the majority of industrial materials engineers for the last 25 years, PEXGOL1 PE- Xa cross-linked polymer material has allowed maintenance and operations engineers a cost effective material option for solving media transportation reliability problems with a wear and corrosion resistant piping material PE-Xa is highly resistant to H2S gas or liquid. Combined with elevated operating temperatures and increased wear and impact resistance - it is a material the Oil and Gas industry should be looking at more closely. From other corrosion intense industries such the high pressure acid Leach (HPAL) facilities at Moa Bay, Cuba and Ambatovy, Madagascar, corrosion related failures of rubber lined steel, alloys and stainless steel pipe are solved by the same pipe material. The hot leach crystallization potash production process at the Dead Sea Works in Israel has been reducing their downtime due to pipe failure by the replacement of steel pipes with a PE-Xa cross-linked polymer material The resistance to the corrosives of oil and gas, combined with the low temperature impact properties and external corrosion resistance makes PE-Xa an attractive material selection for the challenges surrounding the oil and gas operations envelope. Additionally, the material can be used as a liner for higher pressures and temperatures or as a standalone material in tailings, process water or other applications. In this report some relevant applications of this corrosion resistant material are presented.

Abstract:
This article reveals the links between second language learning and the development of global citizenship in pre-school education. A review of educational policy documents shows that global citizenship education is defined as a democratic and sustainable education focused on the development of competences of a global citizen. It emphasises the importance of global citizenship in the education of the pre-school child, since from this point onwards, the child becomes familiar with his/her surroundings, not only locally but also globally. Education at this age is linked to knowledge of the world, communication in the mother tongue and in a foreign language, the development of values relevant to modern society, awareness of human rights, etc. The ethnographic research carried out and the analysis of the data obtained have shown that language learning is closely linked to the development of global citizenship, which is recommended to start at pre-school age, as children can easily absorb new knowledge and apply it in formal and informal activities. Preschool teachers agree that children are very receptive to foreign languages because of modern information technology and its use in communicating with their peers in formal and informal activities in and outside the preschool setting. Thus, combining global citizenship education with foreign language learning is seen as essential for a growing global citizen because of the wider educational opportunities.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipeline Research Council International Inc. (PRCI)'s Crack Management SRP has identified that circumferential cracking is a challenge for pipeline operating companies. The objective of this work was to create a framework to identify, assess and mitigate the risk due to circumferential cracking threats. Susceptibility to failure from circumferential cracking is linked to (1) circumfer-ential cracks subject to increasing axial or bending strains, or (2) growth in circumferential cracks at locations of residual strain. This project focusses on the first. No single inline inspection (ILI) technology is capable of identifying circumferential cracks co-located within areas of increasing axial and bending strain. While bending strains are reliably de-tected with inertial mapping in-line inspection (ILI/IMU), identifying increasing strain due to sub-sidence or ground movement geotechnical requires separate expertise. Combining these into a framework to estimate the risk of a pipeline failure from circumferential cracks is the focus of this project. This work summarizes the state-of-the art of pipeline risk assessment, which was the starting point for the development of circumferential crack management framework. The framework is compat-ible with the state-of-the-art risk methods used for other threats, it is intended to integrate into operators' integrity management planning, and it addresses the latest regulations and best practices adhered to by the industry.

Abstract:
This review profiles initiatives that seek to foster intergroup contact; to change perceptions of the ‘other’ through perspective-taking/giving and stories of moral exemplars; and that incorporate art and memorialisation. Initiatives that foster meaningful contact in divided contexts have been linked with increased empathy and trust, changes in perceptions of outgroups, which in turn can pave the way for prosocial behaviours towards rival outgroups. For contact interventions to contribute to higher levels of reconciliation, encounters with a specific outgroup member must improve attitudes not only toward that individual but extend to the whole outgroup. In addition, positive effects need to extend beyond the direct participants to the broader community.

Although chemists, in general, are concerned with the art and science of constructing molecules and understanding their behavior, for a long time the idea that such molecules can be linked together by strong bonds to make infinite, extended structures were fraught with failure. The notion of using molecular building blocks to make such structures invariably led to chaotic, ill-defined materials and therefore not only defying the chemists’ need to exert their will on the design of matter but also preventing them from deciphering the atomic arrangement of such products. The field remained undeveloped for most of the twentieth century, and it was taken as an article of faith that linking molecules by strong bonds to make extended structures is a “waste of time” because “it doesn’t work.”

Full text
Abstract:
The paper argues that Emerging Market economies (EMs) face financial vulnerabilities that weaken the effectiveness of a domestic Lender of Last Resort (LOLR). As a result, monetary policy is inextricably linked to the state of the credit market. In particular, the central bank should be ready to operate as LOLR during Sudden Stop (of capital inflows) by releasing international reserves in an effective manner. These conditions also impact on optimal monetary policy in normal but high-volatility periods. The paper further argues that during those periods interest rate rules may engender excessive volatility of exchange rates and, thus, that it may be advisable to temporarily supplement those rules by foreign exchange market intervention or outright exchange rate pegging. At a fundamental level, the analysis suggests that the state-of-the-art literature summarized by Woodford (2003) or even more heterodox approaches exemplified by Stiglitz and Greenwald (2003) are likely fall short of providing a satisfactory guide for monetary policy in EMs.

*Chapter 9 of the forthcoming book "Economic Analysis of Land Use in Global Climate Change Policy," edited by Thomas W. Hertel, Steven Rose, and Richard S.J. Tol The goal of this Chapter is to study the complex interaction between agriculture, economic growth and the environment, given future uncertainties. We combine economic concepts and biophysical constraints in one consistent modeling framework to be able to quantify and analyze the long-term socio-economic and environmental consequences of different scenarios. Here, we present the innovative methodology of coupling an economic and a biophysical model to combine state of the art knowledge from economic and biophysical sources. First, a comprehensive representation of the agricultural and land markets is required in the economic model. Therefore we included a land demand structure to reflect the degree of substitutability of types of land-use types and we included a land supply curve to include the process of land conversion and land abandonment. Secondly, the adapted economic model (LEITAP) is linked to the biophysical-based integrated assessment model IMAGE allowing to feed back spatially and temporarily varying land productivity to the economic framework. Thirdly, the land supply curves in the economic model are parameterized by using the heterogeneous information of land productivity from IMAGE. This link between an economic and biophysical model benefits from the strengths of both models. The economic model captures features of the global food market, including relations between world regions, whereas the bio-physical model adds geographical explicit information on crop growth within each world region. An illustrative baseline analyses shows the environmental consequences of the default baseline and a sensitivity analyses is performed with regard to the land supply curve. Results indicate that economic and environmental consequences are very dependent on whether a country is land scarce or land abundant.
