Linked and maximal linked systems (MLS) on π -systems of measurable (in the wide sense) rectangles are considered (π-system is a family of sets closed with respect to finite intersections). Structures in the form of measurable rectangles are used in measure theory and probability theory and usually lead to semi-algebra of subsets of cartesian product. In the present article, sets-factors are supposed to be equipped with π-systems with “zero” and “unit”. This, in particular, can correspond to a standard measurable structure in the form of semialgebra, algebra, or σ-algebra of sets. In the gener

We introduce a new type of finite copying parallel rewriting system, i. e., grammars with linked nonterminals, which extend the generative capacity of context-free grammars. They can be thought of as having sentential forms where some instances of a nonterminal may be linked. The context-free-like productions replace a nonterminal together with its connected instances. New links are only established between symbols of the derived subforms. A natural limitation is to bound the degree of synchronous rewriting. In this paper, we report a common phenomenon observed in chaotic systems linked by time delay. Recently, the Lorenz chaotic system has been extended to the family of Lorenz systems which includes the Chen and Lü systems. These three chaotic systems, corresponding to different sets of system parameter values, are topologically different. With the aid of numerical simulations, we have surprisingly found that a simple time delay, directly applied to one or more state variables, transforms the Lorenz system to the generalized Chen system or the generalized Lü system without any parameter changes.

American jurisprudence currently applies two incompatible validity standards to determine which laws are enforceable. The natural law tradition evaluates validity by an uncertain standard of divine law, and its methodology relies on contradictory views of human reason. Legal positivism, on the other hand, relies on a methodology that commits the analytic fallacy, separates law from its application, and produces an incomplete model of law. These incompatible standards have created a schism in American jurisprudence that impairs the delivery of justice. This dissertation therefore formulates a

Abstract This chapter explores the type and scope of Slovenian diaspora engagement policies with a focus on social protection. It shows that Slovenia’s engagement with its diaspora is mostly of political and cultural nature and primarily aims at preserving and strengthening Slovenian identity, heritage, language and culture, while less effort has been attributed to developing policies, programmes and tools to reduce exposure to social risks of its nationals abroad. This can be explained by the post-socialist nation-building process, as well as the structure of the social protection system, which is based on compulsory social insurance contributions and linked to employment in the Republic of Slovenia as the main basis for benefit entitlement. The chapter first explores the main characteristics of the Slovenian diaspora and wider institutional framework by which authorities in Slovenia engage with nationals abroad. It then reviews key engagement policies in the areas of unemployment, health, pensions, family-related benefits and economic hardship.

AbstractClimate change is a major development challenge affecting developing countries that rely on rain-fed agricultural production for food and income. Smallholder farmers in these countries are using multiple adaptation practices to manage the effects of climate change. This chapter examines household and community-level factors that influence smallholder farmers’ level of adaptation to climate change in the Hwedza District in Zimbabwe. Data for this study were collected from 400 randomly selected smallholder farmers, using a structured questionnaire, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. The study used a multilevel modeling approach to examine the factors that influence smallholder farmers’ level of adaptation to climate change. Results from the study show that smallholder farmers’ level of adaptation to climate change is conditioned by access to extension services, access to remittances, family labor, household education (household level factors), and linking capital (community-level factor). This chapter therefore concludes that smallholder farmers that have higher levels of adaptation to climate change are those that are well linked to external organizations and have access to agricultural extension services. The chapter recommends that adaptation to climate change can be enhanced by improving access to agricultural extension services and promoting linkages with external organizations that provide information on agricultural adaptation practices.

Abstract:
AbstractAldène Cave is a system of 9 km of extent, on four hydrogeological levels. Within the first two fossil levels, which comprise more than half of the system, many archaeological remains have been discovered. They represent a continuum of more than 350,000 years of human history. On the second level, we find the Paul Ambert gallery, discovered in 1948 by the Abbé Dominique Cathala. This gallery contains many human traces, with footprints and marks of torches that were brought into the cave. A recent geomorphological study of these elements concerned registration and systematic analysis of the lighting marks, as well as an initial determination of the footprints. This work confirmed the contemporaneousness and functional link of these archaeological remains. Lighting management could be determined precisely with the traces on the walls and the remains discovered on the floor in connection with the footprints. These data, investigated with a spatial approach in relation to the cave network, clarify the prehistoric passages and allow an interpretation of the behaviour of visitors. All elements together form the picture of a family at a speleological investigation, which is attributed to the Mesolithic.

Abstract We present the main concepts, components, and usage of Gasol, a Gas AnalysiS and Optimization tooL for Ethereum smart contracts. Gasol offers a wide variety of cost models that allow inferring the gas consumption associated to selected types of EVM instructions and/or inferring the number of times that such types of bytecode instructions are executed. Among others, we have cost models to measure only storage opcodes, to measure a selected family of gas-consumption opcodes following the Ethereum’s classification, to estimate the cost of a selected program line, etc. After choosing the desired cost model and the function of interest, Gasol returns to the user an upper bound of the cost for this function. As the gas consumption is often dominated by the instructions that access the storage, Gasol uses the gas analysis to detect under-optimized storage patterns, and includes an (optional) automatic optimization of the selected function. Our tool can be used within an Eclipse plugin for which displays the gas and instructions bounds and, when applicable, the gas-optimized function.

However, this increase encourages the development of the transition phenomena or even flow separation on the suction side of the blade. At low Reynolds numbers, large separation bubbles can occur there, which are linked with high total pressure losses. The incoming wakes of th

Currently the herringbone grooved journal bearing (HGJB) has applications in the domain of small, low power energy related applications, where high rotational speeds are required for reaching reasonable efficiency and where standard oil lubricated bearings are limited or even unable to operate over the life time required. Furthermore the presence of oil requires auxiliary control systems reducing the overall system efficiency and reliability. High-speed rotors running in hermetic units processing refrigerant vapor require the bearings to operate with this same gas at thermodynamic conditions t

Ongoing urbanization, combined with market fundamentalism as the prevailing mode of political management, is leading to the spatial and social segregation of economic classes in cities. The housing market, being driven by economic interests rather than public policy, favors inflexible forms of ownership or tenancy that are increasingly incompatible with the more diverse forms of live-work patterns and family structures occurring in the society. This paper presents a research-by-design project that explores a speculative future scenario of housing, based on current developments in digital techn

The “Huerta de Murcia” is an agricultural area of about 10,000 Ha in size, originated in the ninth century, and linked to an extensive network of canals dependent from Segura River. Such system provides a much divided and fragmented agrarian morphology, around the city of Murcia, in the southeast of Spain, basically dedicated to the agriculture. The city of Murcia has experimented an important growth in the last five decades, substituting hundreds of hectares of agrarian land, into urban. But even more important than this, the periurban area has suffered along the past 90 years a periurbanizat

There is a family of fitness machines that provides a manual workout task requiring the user to push or pull against a resistance provided by a stack of weight plates. The weight system is usually linked with a single cable to a gripping or user interface device to produce a constant resistance. A fracture of the tensioned cable along its length or at its end connectors causes a sudden acceleration of the grip or other interface device driven by the operator’s push or pull. The sudden loss of resistance often results in an exerciser pulling a heavy bar into his or her face. Because falling wei

In our days, wave energy still remains an important resource of renewable energy that has not been yet completely exploited and fully understood. Various prototypes of point absorbers have already been tested numerically and experimentally in wave-tanks or real sea, but only a few of them has reach the full scale prototype stage. For the family of wave absorbers based on oscillating bodies principle, the energy production may be enhanced by motion control. The choice of a particular mode of control remains decisive in the design of point absorbers and is closely linked to the mechanism archite

Governments in developing countries recognize the need for appropriate technology for the treatment of emergencies from incomplete abortion or miscarriage. Numerous studies have investigated the appropriateness of an integrated model of postabortion care (PAC) that includes three essential elements: emergency treatment for spontaneous or induced abortion; counseling and family planning services; and links to other reproductive health services. Many integrated PAC services include replacement of the conventional clinical treatment, sharp curettage (SC), with manual vacuum aspiration (MVA). In 1

Abstract:
Karnataka is one of the high HIV prevalence states in India. Results from the National Family Health Survey indicate that 0.69 percent of adults aged 15–49 were infected with HIV in 2005–06. According to sentinel surveillance system data, HIV prevalence among pregnant women receiving antenatal care (ANC) in Karnataka was 1.3 percent. Further, 18 of the state's 27 districts have recorded HIV prevalence of more than 1 percent among pregnant women receiving ANC in sentinel sites. Strong male migration patterns are evident in some of the state’s high HIV prevalence districts. According to the 2001
