Full text
Abstract:
The Archivio Multimediale degli Attori Italiani (AMAtI) is an on-line computerized archive devoted to the Italian actors, dancers and singers who have practised the profession from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. For every actor AMAtI offers a complete original and up-to-date profile, bibliography, list of sources, and a detailed selection of data on his/her career and single performances. Documents, images and multi-media material (video and audio), linked to the collected information, can be viewed in order to provide a more in-depth rundown on each actor. It is also possible to research single performances independently, how characters have been interpreted over time, as well as theatre companies and historical theatres.

Abstract:
This chapter concentrates on practical tips and tricks for improving the efficiency of computer simulation programs. This includes the effect of using truncated and shifted potentials, and the use of table look-up and neural networks for calculating potentials. Approaches for speeding up simulations, such as the Verlet neighbour list, linked-lists and multiple timestep methods are described. The chapter then proceeds to discuss the general structure of common simulation programs; in particular the choice of the starting configuration and the initial velocities of the particles. The chapter also contains details of the overall approach to organising runs, storing the data, and checking that the program is working correctly.

Abstract:
Disorders of the peroxisome are divided into two major categories. In the first, the organelle fails to develop normally, leading to disruption of multiple peroxisomal enzymes. The second category consists of those disorders in which the peroxisome structure is normal but functioning of a single peroxisomal enzyme or protein is defective. While there is an expanding list of disorders in both categories, this chapter focuses on X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, the most common peroxisomal disorder, and on peroxisomal assembly/biogenesis disorders.

Abstract:
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the most common inherited neuropathy encountered in clinical practice. The disorder encompasses a large number of subtypes; most share common neurological manifestations. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is often subdivided into many subtypes based on pathophysiological or inheritance patterns. There are demyelinating and axonal types, as well as dominant, recessive, or X-linked forms. This case presents a typical patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and highlights the neurological findings. This is followed by emphasis on the findings seen on nerve conduction studies showing the differences between the demyelinating, axonal, and intermediate types. A list of the known genetic defects described so far is presented. A working and practical differential diagnosis and algorithm is also suggested.

Abstract:
Substance use, mainly defined as the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs, is a major risk factor for disease, disability, and mortality. Alcohol consumption can cause a number of chronic diseases, including several types of cancer, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, various cardiovascular diseases, alcohol use disorders and infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia. Certain patterns of light moderate drinking, without heavy drinking occasions, may incur a protective effect on ischemic disease categories and diabetes. Finally, alcohol has been established as a causal factor for unintentional and intentional injury. Illegal drug use has been mainly linked to four health outcomes: overdose and other injury, noncommunicable diseases, certain mental disorders, and infectious diseases. In the final section, a comprehensive list of diseases attributable to tobacco smoking is provided, and the most important selected medical conditions are described. These include lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and ischemic heart disease.

Abstract:
1 Chronicles 1–9 presents an archive of genealogies that performs memory and identities of Israel in a highly nuanced manner. Numerous references to women fulfil structural functions at the core of the genealogy performance, first and foremost in the genealogies of Judah. In contrast, the central genealogies of Levi only provide a single gendered fragment: they list Miriam as one of the ‘sons’ of Amram (5:29). Other Levite women, for example those listed in Exodus 6:16–25, are missing. Miriam herself is not formally linked to the many sisters that are mentioned in 1 Chronicles 1–9, nor are her capacities as musician, dancer, prophet, and leader brought into play. Embarking from this striking gap, the chapter addresses the question of how Bible texts that are predominantly male-centred can be read from a gender perspective, specifically in view of submitting them to a critical post-secular discourse on the Hebrew Bible and beyond.

Straub, Rainer H. Neuroendocrine system. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642489.003.0022.

Full text
Abstract:
Endocrine abnormalities are very common in patients with chronic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (CARDs) due to the systemic involvement of the central nervous system and endocrine glands. In recent years, the response of the endocrine (and also neuronal) system to peripheral inflammation has been linked to overall energy regulation of the diseased body and bioenergetics of immune cells. In CARDs, hormonal and neuronal pathways are outstandingly important in partitioning energy-rich fuels from muscle, brain, and fat tissue to the activated immune system. Neuroendocrine regulation of fuel allocation has been positively selected as an adaptive programme for transient serious, albeit non-life-threatening, inflammatory episodes. In CARDs, mistakenly, the adaptive programmes are used again but for a much longer time leading to systemic disease sequelae with endocrine (and also neuronal) abnormalities. The major endocrine alterations are depicted in the following list: mild activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system, inadequate secretion of ACTH and cortisol relative to inflammation, loss of androgens, inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and fertility problems, high serum levels of oestrogens relative to androgens, fat deposits adjacent to inflamed tissue, increase of serum prolactin, and hyperinsulinaemia (and the metabolic syndrome). Neuroendocrine abnormalities are demonstrated using this framework that can explain many CARD-related endocrine disturbances. This chapter gives an overview on pathophysiology of neuroendocrine alterations in the context of energy regulation.

Stamp Dawkins, Marian. The Science of Animal Welfare. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198848981.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is intended as a guide for anyone who is interested in animals and how their welfare can be assessed scientifically. It addresses the question of why, despite growing public interest in how animals are treated, it has proved so difficult to arrive at an agreed definition of what ‘animal welfare’ is and it then provides an answer. A definition of animal welfare as ‘health and animals having what they want’ can be easily understood by scientists and non-scientists alike, expresses in simple words what underlies many existing definitions and shows what evidence we need to collect to improve animal welfare in practice. Above all, it puts an animal’s own point of view at the heart of the assessment of its welfare. The book shows how ‘health and what animals want’ also helps us to make sense of the long and often confusing list of welfare measurements that are now in use, such as ‘stress’ and ‘feel-good hormones’, expressive sounds and gestures, natural behaviour, cognitive bias and stereotypies. Animal sentience (conscious feelings of pleasure and suffering) are discussed in the context of our current knowledge of human and animal consciousness. Finally, the book highlights some key ideas in the relationship between animal welfare science and animal ethics and shows how closely the well-being of humans and that of animals are linked together.
