Abstract:
AbstractAn analysis of Thucydides’ most famous statements on the origins of the war between Athens and Sparta (1.23.4-6) and on the methodology of research of the facts (1.22.2. Cf. 1.20-21) shows a philosophical approach to history and historical research. A critically assessed comparison with some of Heraclitus of Ephesus’ statements also suggests that Thucydides’ own knowledge of early ancient philosophy helped him to shape his view on fundamental issues of historical research.Thucydides appears to have introduced himself in a similar way as one might expect a philosopher would have done. Besides the rhetoric of self-presentation and self-definition, Thucydides was indeed a philosopher: he conceived his own political science as a hidden sophia which showed the invisible forces that, by reciprocal interaction, shaped historical development.

Abstract:
Nussbaum attempts to undermine the sharp distinction between literature and philosophy by arguing that literary texts (tragic poetry particularly) distinctively appeal to emotion and imagination, that our emotional response itself is cognitive, and that Aristotle thought so too. I argue that emotional response is not cognitive but presupposes cognition. Aristotle argued that we learn from the mimesis of action delineated in the plot, not from our emotional response. The distinctions between emotional and intellectual writing, poetry and prose, literature and philosophy, the imaginative and the unimaginative do not cut along the same lines. That between literature and philosophy is not hard and fast: philosophy can be dramatic (eg Plato's dialogues) and drama can be philosophical (eg some of Shakespeare's plays), but whether either is emotional or not, or written in poetry or prose, are other questions.

Abstract:
While publishing his first philosophical texts, Jean Paul Sartre also initiates his career as a fictionist.Moving across a multiplicity of discourses, Sartre's thoughts find sound expression on the interfaces between philosophy and literature, forging a communicating neighbo r hood, in Franklin Leopoldo e Silva's terms. As a consequence, a kind of internal link between the philosophical narrative (technical and conceptual) and the literary narrative (aesthetic) allows for a full and rich comprehension of Sartre's writings. It's under the light of this understanding that we set out to explore the short story The childhood of a leader, 1939, one of Sartre's first literary texts, produced while he was working on the possible grounds for a Phenomenological Psychology. The story portrays the life of Lucien Fleurier from his early days as a child through a number of stages and situations in which he tries to redefine his existencial project. This way, Sartre weaves between the lines of his narrative several of the notions comprising that process, which end up settling the grounds for a phenomenological theory of the self, in keeping with his philosophical work entitled The transcendence of the ego. Therefore our work aims at using that literary text to support the study of a phenomenological theory of the self, as outlined by Sartre in both philosophical and literary fronts. Based on the intentionality of the consciousness the philosopher criticizes the formal and substantial notions of the self generally accepted by philosophy and psychology in his days, still persisting to date. Such understandings obliterate the way of being of the human condition, characterized by freedom, expressed by the distress our character Fleurier experiences trying his most to escape his inconsistency of being.

Abstract:
The thinking of the relationship between virtue and happiness in the excavated document Qiongdayishi 《窮達以時》 shows many links with other extant literatures. Qiongdayishi is the reflection made by Confucius and his disciplines in a life crisis. It does not consider that there is an inner correspondence between virtue and happiness, which is the same in other Confucian literature. Besides, it gives a new explanation of Qiong 窮 and Da 達, turning them to the issue of moral autonomy of human beings. It indicates that the idea of virtue and happiness of Confucianism is complex and cannot be understood in one perspective.

Greenhalgh, Trisha, and Sietse Wieringa. "Is it time to drop the ‘knowledge translation’ metaphor? A critical literature review." Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine 104, no. 12 (2011): 501–9. http://dx.doi.org/10.1258/jrsm.2011.110285.

Full text
Abstract:
The literature on ‘knowledge translation’ presents challenges for the reviewer because different terms have been used to describe the generation, sharing and application of knowledge and different research approaches embrace different philosophical positions on what knowledge is. We present a narrative review of this literature which deliberately sought to highlight rather than resolve tensions between these different framings. Our findings suggest that while ‘translation’ is a widely used metaphor in medicine, it constrains how we conceptualise and study the link between knowledge and practice. The ‘translation’ metaphor has, arguably, led to particular difficulties in the fields of ‘evidence-based management’ and ‘evidence-based policymaking’ – where it seems that knowledge obstinately refuses to be driven unproblematically into practice. Many non-medical disciplines such as philosophy, sociology and organization science conceptualise knowledge very differently, as being (for example) ‘created’, ‘constructed’, ‘embodied’, ‘performed’ and ‘collectively negotiated’ – and also as being value-laden and tending to serve the vested interests of dominant élites. We propose that applying this wider range of metaphors and models would allow us to research the link between knowledge and practice in more creative and critical ways. We conclude that research should move beyond a narrow focus on the ‘know–do gap’ to cover a richer agenda, including: (a) the situation-specific practical wisdom (phronesis) that underpins clinical judgement; (b) the tacit knowledge that is built and shared among practitioners (‘mindlines’); (c) the complex links between power and knowledge; and (d) approaches to facilitating macro-level knowledge partnerships between researchers, practitioners, policymakers and commercial interests.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper forges links between early analytic philosophy and the posits of semiotics. I show that there are some striking and potentially quite important, but perhaps unrecognized, connections between three key concepts in Wittgenstein’s middle and later philosophy, namely, complex (Philosophical Grammar), rule-following (Philosophical Investigations), and language games (Philosophical Investigations). This reveals the existence of a conceptual continuity between Wittgenstein’s “early” and “later” philosophy that can be applied to the analysis of the iterability of representation in computer-generated images. Methodologically, this paper clarifies to at least some degree, the nature, progress and promise of an approach to doing philosophy and semiotics from a modally modest perspective that sees in the intellectual products of humanities, and not in unreflective empiricism, the future of scientific development. This hybrid, non-reductionist approach shows, among other things, that semiotic processes are encoded by specific types of complexes in computer-generated images that display iterability in time and space.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article is an inquiry into the concept of metaphysical experience through a joint discussion of two authors and philosophers with different approaches that nevertheless converge in the reclamation of the concept and rely both on the experience of death as an example. In both cases, the authors are guided by the central problem of how not to relinquish metaphysical experience to unscrutinized immediacy or a powerful conversion which enjoins subjection, putting it in contact with aesthetics and ethics at once. Theodor Adorno situates metaphysical experience as a problem of philosophy of history and devotes attention to the contemporary possibility of experiences that evoke transcendence. The transformations he identifies in the concept also lead him to propose art as a domain where metaphysical experience is alive. The implicit personal investment Adorno makes is much more clear in Lacoue-Labarthe who, in a dialogue with Maurice Blanchot, shows the experience as deeply bound up with literature and its links to subjectivity. The article argues that the main difference between the two approaches is modal and temporal from the side of the object, aside from the different modes of interrogation recognized with the labels deconstruction and critical theory.

Abstract:
Teacher’s management skills (TMS) determine his/her performance in the workplace however, there are many factors which affect relationships between TMS and teacher-performance (TP). One of the most highlighted factors is the emotional intelligence (EI) of teacher. In the current study, both personal EI (PEI) and social EI (SEI) have significantly played their role however, social EI has emerged as Full mediator confirming the assumption that for social interactions, SEI is more relevant than PEI. Positivism has been used as the research philosophy which emphasizes to accept facts and figures as knowledge if verified through observational ‘scientific-method’ for both data collection and analysis. Survey approach was applied on literature and field surveys with scientific treatment of data supplemented by statistical procedures. Correlations and mediations are significant with huge statistics thereby confirming the assumed interactions of variables. The study has implications for the stakeholder to consider EI as the major contributor towards positive relations between TMS and TP.

Abstract:
‘We are before Dante’: In this interview, held via email in March 2020 amid the massive outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jean-Luc Nancy leads us on a brief but far-reaching foray through his thought. He succeeds in providing an overview of the subjects that he has raised since the beginning of his career as a philosopher, while maintaining a focus on their pertinence for what we are currently facing in the world today. He supplements his insight that ‘we are before Dante’ with the equally remarkable conclusion: ‘Desire is what is born par excellence’. In between these two propositions, and in between the lines and words documented here – touching upon topics as diverse as the moai statues of Easter Island, the music of Schumann, Wagner, and techno, as well as the writing of Artaud, Proust, and Verlaine – we find an exciting, up-to-date treatment of the question of how to ‘deal with the world intellectually’ (Musil) without, in doing so, participating in the modern claim to ‘master’ it. Instead, Nancy suggests, we ought to be attentive to what escapes us by its very principle, with philosophy, literature, and art serving as witnesses of what has always been absent from our mind, that is, the sensibility of meaning, in order to become aware that, since we are always already before and after birth, ‘we come from nowhere and everywhere’. This realization enables us to understand the political consequences that it has for our understanding of a world in metamorphosis, including for highly controversial issues such as colonialism, anti-Semitism, the far right, neo-liberalism, and other totalitarian forms that supposedly manifest a return of the myth, as well as its consequences for the insurmountability of Marx(ism).

Morethe, Louis-César. "'Citadelle' d’Antoine de Saint Exupéry : poème ou oeuvre de philosophie ? : réception et étude du statut générique de l’oeuvre posthume de l’écrivain aviateur." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018STRAC038.

Full text
Abstract:
As soon as it was published, Citadelle, considered by Saint Exupéry as the work of his life, received a mixed reception."Its mixture of lyricism to vague philosophical considerations" was denounced by the Critique and a few years later, the French and foreign universities split into more or less two major movements of interpretation of the work : one, major in France, which judged Citadelle as a Poem and Saint-Exupéry as a Poet, and the other which deemed it as a philosophical work above all, or even of Philosophy, and Saint Exupery as a proper Philosopher (with no academic experience). As a result, this thesis studies first Citadelle’s Critical Reception both in France and abroad. In order to try to understand these differences of opinion as to the positioning of the work within the genericity, the second part tries to enlighten Saint-Exupéry’s last Poetic Art, while showing the originality of this scriptural step which rests on two essentially related components : conceptual as well as figurative and symbolic, which the Critique seems to have constantly opposed to one another in its interpretation. The third part of this thesis attempts a new answer in the light of the preceding elements in order to determine to what extent Citadelle - which is certainly a Poem in the Saint-Exupéry sense of the term - can be considered as a work of Philosophy, in the light not only of the History of Philosophy but also what would make the discursive specificity (ies) of the text produced by "Philosophy". Finally, in order to understand the origin of some fundamental concepts of the author's thought, which illuminates both his scriptural approach and the originality of this misunderstood and insufficiently studied work, we deal with Saint-Exupéry as a reader of some major philosophers

Warden, Tonya. "Medieval Courtly Love: The Links between Courtly Love, Christianity, and the Roles of Women in Tennyson and Morris." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2001. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/96.

Full text
Abstract:
The art of courtly love is difficult to pinpoint because there are many facets that extend into different areas. In the Pre-Raphaelite and Medieval periods, love was more formulated with rules, moral standards, and codes. Courtly love is often seen as the "love" practiced by kings, queens, and other nobility because of the mystique that surrounds legendary stories like Lancelot and Guinevere. Courtly love encompasses spiritual awakening, lust, passion, adultery, and religion; therefore, the art of courtly love intrigues as well as interests its readers. Many critics have studied the effects of courtly love in literature and have come to the conclusion that courtly love was not only linked to Christianity, but that courtly love was also linked with other religions and philosophies. The link between Christianity and courtly love is the largest debate between critics and scholars within this particular genre. Women have also played a part in understanding courtly love because of their complex role within the storylines of the literary poems. Women were often seen as the stronger of the sexes; however, they were viewed as objects instead of people. In courtly love, women were often the downfall of men because of their idle ways and abilities to deceive men. Women are important for the understanding of the rules and courtships between men and women during this period. Tennyson and Morris had the most influential courtly love literature during the Pre-Raphaelite period. Their contributions to the tale of the Arthurian Legend are inherent to the understanding of this genre of courtly love. With Idylls of the King, Tennyson brought a resurgence of interest in the Arthurian Legend. His Idylls are various stories about the trials and tribulations of Arthur's life and others in Camelot. Morris followed the brilliance of Tennyson's Idylls with The Defense of Guinevere, which is a poem solely based on Guinevere's perspective and point of view. These two authors sought to create a myth around the Arthurian Legend with great vigor and their own poetic style. There has been a plethora of discussion on the topic of courtly love; however, there has not a been a common agreement on its origins. This study shows how courtly love relates to literature during the Pre-Raphaelite period, most especially in the Arthurian Legend.

Abstract:

This dissertation challenges the traditional histories of rhetoric in early America by examining how Scottish Enlightenment rhetoric affected those outside of the white, male-dominated social hierarchy of the early eighteenth century through an examination of works by white women, Native Americans, and African Americans that confluence around national calls for Native American removal and African colonization. Scholars have shown the influence of Scottish Enlightenment rhetoric on the early Republic, specifically the rhetoric of George Campbell and Hugh Blair, and historians have shown the relationships between abolitionists, Native Americans, and African Americans during the nineteenth century. However, these scholars have not shown how writers deployed Scottish Enlightenment rhetoric in these debates. By examining writings by Lydia Maria Child and Catharine Maria Sedgwick, I show how both women incorporated the ideas of sympathy in their works about Native Americans and African Americans. I also explore how activists such as William Apess, David Walker, and Hosea Easton all implemented Campbell's rhetorical ideas into their arguments and discuss how their rhetorical practices can be seen in relationship to one another. Drawing on Blair's thoughts on taste, I explore how newspaper editors John Russwurm and Elias Boudinot viewed taste and how they presented their views to their African American and Cherokee readers respectively. Looking forward, I conclude with a brief examination of the poet Albery Allson Whitman who wrote epic poems centered on the confluence of Native American and African American experiences. Overall, this dissertation works to show how those outside of the social hierarchy wielded rhetorical principles taught in the hallowed halls of the university, and it also explores the understudied links between activists who fought for Native American and African American rights during the early nineteenth century.

The report attempts to present the interrelationship between sports and tourism in two interrelated areas - sports and tourism. Tourism is considered as a means of physical activity, physical education and sports, realized through the forms of sports and tourism. A definition based on the scientific discipline "Theory and Methodology of Physical Education" is derived. Abstract:
Many tools and methods claim to be “innovative”. Most belong either to project management, engineering design or creativity approaches. “Innovation Management” literature usually discusses “success patterns” for Innovation based on case studies, but hardly process the comprehensive support of innovation activities. It seems that there is a strategic gap between traditional idea-realization processes that focus on reliable project management and the diffuse situation in ever faster changing environments with unclear opportunities and risks. To professionally reinforce strategic innovation activities it is necessary to define a resilient framework. This paper discusses a new view on the field of innovation that is based on the comprehensiveness of philosophy. Fundamental definitions of early philosophers on the interdependencies of the “co-evolution of the world” are applied to define an “Innovation Philosophy”. This is transformed into an “Innovation Strategy” that comprises a repeatable “Innovation Process” for guiding teams through Innovation Projects.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: Given the underlying philosophy of the agile manifesto, this study investigates whether an increase in agile maturity is associated with improved perceived project success. Background: The underlying philosophy of the agile manifesto is embodied in principle one which promotes the continuous delivery of software that is deemed valuable by the customer, while principle twelve encourages continual improvement of the delivery process. This constant improvement, or maturity, is not a concept unique to agile methods and is commonly referred to as a maturity model. The most common of maturity model is the Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI). However, research consensus indicates CMMI might not fully be compatible with agile implementation, specifically at higher levels of maturity without sacrificing agility. Agile maturity models (AMM), which are aligned to agile principles encourage continuous improvement while maintaining agility. Methodology: The study employs a conceptual model based on an existing agile maturity model that is related to perceived project success. Using an objectivist perspective, a quantitative method was employed to analyze the results of an online survey of agile practitioners. Contribution: The significant contribution from this research is the validation of the conceptual model relating the activities and maturity levels of the AMM as the independent variables to the dependent variable of perceived project success. Findings: The data analysis found that a significant positive correlation exists between maturity levels and perceived project success. The strongest correlation was found at the highest maturity level, with relatively weaker correlation at the lower levels of maturity. It can thus be concluded that a higher level of maturity in the AMM is positively associated with perceived project success. Recommendations for Practitioners: The study has practical implications in highlighting that performance management, requirements management, regular delivery and customer availability are key areas to focus on to establish and continually improve the success of agile implementations. This study further assists practitioners in systematically identifying the critical agile activities, such as the use of story cards, continuous delivery and the presence of a knowledgeable customer. Recommendation for Researchers: The contributions of this study for academics is the confirmation of the maturity model developed by Patel and Ramachandran (2009a). This study also shows the association between the individual activities within the maturity levels as well as the maturity levels and the perceived project success, addressing a gap in literature relating these concepts. Future Research: It would be useful to replicate this study whilst following a qualitative approach. The study could also be replicated with a sample consisting of agile project customers.

Abstract:
Формулируются наиболее важные задачи, решение которых могло бы существенным образом изменить ситуацию: повышение активности преподавателей философии на факультетах и в вузе в целом, поиск и использование новых эффективных форм и средств преподавания, внедрение в процесс обучения компьютерных технологий, интернета, укрепление связей преподавателей философии и профильных дисциплин. the article reveals the role of philosophy and other philosophical disciplines in the system of training a future teacher. It is stated that one of the results of reforms in the field of higher education was a significant reduction in the number of classroom hours allocated to the course of philosophy, and the study of logic, ethics and aesthetics that contribute to the formation of a future teacher of a high culture of thinking, «citizenship, patriotism, spirituality, humanity and other human qualities», is dependent on the preferences of educational program managers. It is shown that one of the major problems in teaching philosophy is the negative attitude of students and teachers of specialized disciplines of higher education institutions to this discipline. The most important tasks are formulated, the solution of which could significantly change the situation: increasing the activity of philosophy teachers at the faculties and in the University as a whole, searching for and using new effective forms and means of teaching, introducing computer technologies, the Internet into the learning process, and strengthening the links between philosophy teachers and specialized disciplines.

Abstract:
Product Platform Planning is an emerging philosophy that calls for the planned development and deployment of families of related products. It is markedly different from the traditional product development process, which focuses on optimized designs for individual products. This is a relatively new development in engineering design, which is not typically a part of an engineer’s education. Furthermore, it is different from traditional engineering topics in that it requires an integration of principles from both management and engineering design. All this makes for a new and different topic for which educational material needs to be developed. To address these needs, an online resource has been developed. This resource includes a set of three cases, a tutorial, and a glossary in a multimedia format hosted on the Internet. The tutorial developed for the website presents the basic concepts as well as current research on planning and architecting families of products. The case study section has three cases based on a family of popular power tools. The cases present information in the form of function diagrams, assembly diagrams, customer needs and market-segment data. Links are provided to helpful sites, as well as to relevant sections in the tutorial. Although product platform planning is a relatively new development, a variety of approaches have been used by the research community and practitioners in industry. A need was felt for a comprehensive, coherent source of knowledge in this field on which to base the case studies, and also as a means to providing a single source of information to users of this resource. Accordingly, a literature review was conducted and an overall process description was developed. This paper presents and describes the online learning resource which was developed. In addition, the literature review and the process description of platform planning that were developed are also detailed.

In ASME 2003 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2003/dac-48834.

Abstract:
A modular robot system is a collection of actuators, links, and connections that can be arbitrarily assembled into a number of different robot configurations and sequences. High performance modular robots require more than just sophisticated controls. They also need top-quality mechanical components. Bearings in particular must operate well at low speed, have high rotational accuracy, be compact for low weight, and especially be stiff for high positional accuracy. To ensure the successful use of bearings in precision modular robots, knowledge of the bearing properties and requirements are investigated. Background information on various topics such as modular robots, precision modular actuators, and their error sources are described with respect to precision engineering. Extensive literature on thin section bearings is reviewed to examine their use in precision robotic applications. Theoretical studies are performed to calculate bearing stiffness adopting a methodology based on Hertzian theory. This approach is applied to analyze two proposed designs of equivalent-sized crossed roller and four-point bearings, principal bearings used for transmitting all the payload and mass of the robot structure. The maximum deflections and contact stresses for the proposed actuator assembly and loading conditions are estimated and compared including a range of general bearing properties such as friction, cost, and shock resistance.

Abstract:
Stretching properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of large diameters are studied in atomistic simulations. The simulations are performed based on the AIREBO empirical interatomic potential for three types of CNTs: Nanotubes with circular cross section, permanently collapsed nanotubes with “dog-bone”-shaped cross sections, and collapsed nanotubes with intra-tube covalent cross-links. In the last case, the cross-links between parallel quasi-planar parts of the nanotube wall are assumed to be formed by interstitial carbon atoms. The calculated equilibrium shape of collapsed nanotubes and the threshold diameter for permanently collapsed CNTs are found to agree with existing literature data. Elastic modulus, maximum stress, and strain at failure are calculated for zigzag CNTs with the equivalent diameter up to 6.27 nm in the temperature range from 5 K to 500 K. The simulations show that these mechanical properties only moderately depend on the diameter of circular CNTs. For collapsed CNTs with and without cross-links, the mechanical properties are practically independent of the CNT diameter for nanotubes with diameters larger than 4.7 nm. The elastic modulus and maximum stress of collapsed nanotubes are found to be smaller than those for the equivalent circular CNTs. The intra-tube cross-linking increases the elastic modulus and strength of collapsed CNTs in up to 50% compared to corresponding collapsed CNTs without cross-links, but reduces the breaking strain. Thermal softening of CNTs with increasing temperature in the range from 100 K to 500 K induces a decrease in the elastic modulus and maximum stress in about 12–33%.

Abstract:
The ERCOFTAC (European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion) Seminar and Workshop was held with the aim of sharing between academic and industrial organisations information on the state of the art of 3D flow calculations for turbomachines. An important objective was the educational element for both established workers and new researches in the area. The philosophy was one of openness and sharing of both successes and problems. Four test cases were selected from the open literature covering a range of turbomachinery configurations. Five review lectures were given to provide a background for the discussion of the computational results. The workshop sessions indicated the importance of ensuring numerical accuracy, the need for future work particularly in turbulence and transition modelling, and the possibilities of adaptive and unstructured grids. Industrial participation was rather low and the problems in allocating resources by an organisation for this sort of exercise are recognised, and should be carefully considered for any future similar event.

Abstract:
In the 1980’s Manchester University carried out over 110 tests on cylinders with a composite wall (steel-concrete-steel) subjected to external pressure as already reported in the literature. This paper describes further tests on 9 cylinders with a composite wall and a dome end subjected to external pressure and reports the results and compares them with theory. The cylinders were 500 mm diameter and 1250 mm long and four of them had penetrations through the cylinder wall. These tests were carried out under contract for Tecnomare SpA of Italy and have not been previously reported because of confidentiality reasons. The agreement between test behaviour, failure load and the theory developed at Manchester University is good. The philosophy for the design of such vessels for seabed structures is discussed and a ‘depth margin’ method proposed as it is a more realistic way of applying safety. Examples of designs for different depths are given and compared with the predicted failure pressure.

Abstract:
This report reviews the literature on links between international food prices and political instability (including protests, riots and social unrest). The literature on food prices and protests, riots, unrest, or violent incidents consists mainly of peer-reviewed scholarly articles that utilise econometric modeling. Some early studies examined the links between international food prices and political instability and found conflicting results. Some assessments concluded that there were links between international food prices or food insecurity and the number of violent incidents, while others found that such a link was tenuous. This literature review covers some of the main arguments and findings in the recent literature on food prices and political instability or conflict. The majority of the econometric studies in this review find that there is a link between food price increases and a greater probability of protests, riots or social unrest. However, there are still a few studies that have contradictory results. So, the debate on the effect of food prices on political stability continues. Food subsidies, cash transfers, price controls, and the elimination of trade barriers are some of the policy interventions that may address rising food prices and mitigate the rise of violent collective action. However, the literature questions the effectiveness of such policies in cases where violence or protest action stems from deeper, underlying economic or political grievances.

Saha, Amrita, Jodie Thorpe, Keir Macdonald, and Kelbesa Megersa. Linking Business Environment Reform with Gender and Inclusion: A Study of Business Licensing Reform in Indonesia. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.001.

Full text
Abstract:
Business environment reform (BER) targets inadequate business regulations. It is intended to remove constraints to business investment, enabling growth and job creation, and create opportunities for international business to contribute to and benefit from this growth. However, there is a lack of detailed knowledge of the impact of BER on gender and inclusion (G&I). While a review of existing literature suggests that in general, there is no direct link between BER and G&I, indirect links are likely through the influence of BER on firm performance. Outcomes will be influenced by the differential ways in which women-led firms experience the business environment when compared to their male counterparts, with disparities based on how they are treated under the law, as well as structural and sociocultural factors. The fact that in many countries, female-led firms are fewer and smaller than those of their male counterparts, and may operate in different sectors, also affects these dynamics. This research offers new insights through an in-depth analysis of the impact of the Pelayanan Terpadu Satu Pintu (PTSP) or one-stop shop business licensing reform in 2009 on firm performance in Indonesia, and how these impacts vary based on the gender of firm leadership. The results find that on average, firms benefited from improved business performance (sales), as a direct or indirect effect of this reform, as well as an increase in the number of medium and large-scale firms. Outside Jakarta (Bali, Banten, Lampung), women-led firms experienced a small but significant benefit relative to male-led firms, related to both sales and the number of medium and large-scale firms they run. In Jakarta, women-led firms continued to lag behind men and there were no significant effects on employment, and this held across province and gender. These findings are based on an analysis of the PTSP reform using data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES), a survey of small, medium and large firms (i.e. with more than four employees) which took place in Indonesia between 2009 and 2015.
