Abstract:
The triplet electronic ground state potential energy surface of lithium nitroxide has been systematically investigated using convergent quantum mechanical methods. Equilibrium structures and physical properties for five stationary points (three minima and two transition states) have been determined employing highly correlated coupled cluster theory with four correlation-consistent polarized-valence (cc-pVXZ and aug-cc-pVXZ, X = T and Q) and two core correlation-consistent polarized-valence (cc-pCVXZ, X = T and Q) basis sets. The global minimum, roughly L-shaped Li-O-N, is predicted to lie 6.5 kcal mol-1 below the linear LiON minimum and 2.4 kcal mol-1 below the linear LiON minimum. The barrier to isomerization from the global minimum to LiON was found to be 7.4 kcal mol-1 and with regard to LiNO 6.9 kcal mol-1. The dissociation energies, D0, with respect to Li + NO, have been predicted for all minima and for the global minimum was found to be 34.9 kcal mol-1.

HARRIS, NIGEL. "THE LION IN MEDIEVAL WESTERN EUROPE: TOWARD AN INTERPRETIVE HISTORY." Traditio 76 (2021): 185–213. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/tdo.2021.5.

Full text
Abstract:
Several scholars have studied meanings attributed to the lion in the western European Middle Ages, but their accounts have tended to be partial and fragmentary. A balanced, coherent interpretive history of the medieval lion has yet to be written. This article seeks to promote and initiate the process of composing such a history by briefly reviewing previous research, by proposing a thematic and chronological framework on which work on the lion might reliably be based, and by itself discussing numerous textual examples, not least from German, Latin, and French literature. The five categories of lion symbolism covered are, respectively, the threatening lion, the Christian lion, the noble lion, the sinful lion, and the clement lion. These meanings are shown successively to have constituted regnant fashions that at various times profoundly shaped people's understanding of the lion; but it is demonstrated also that they existed alongside, and in a state of creative tension with, a “ground bass” of lion meanings that changed relatively little. Lions nearly always, for example, represented important, imposing things and people (for example, kings); and the New Testament's polarized presentation of the lion as either Christ or the devil proved enormously influential both throughout and beyond the Middle Ages. As such any cultural history of the lion — and indeed of many other natural phenomena — must be continually sensitive to the co-existence and interaction of tradition and innovation, stability and dynamism.

Abstract:
This study investigates the incorporation of traditions and innovations in the use of Suixi Lion Heads in lion dance performances in China. Suixi Lion Heads are a form of folk art that has been passed down through generations, and their design incorporates new elements while still maintaining their traditional essence. Through an analysis of the visual symbols and production process of Suixi Lion Heads, this study explores how the balance between tradition and innovation has contributed to their popularity and success in lion dance performances. The simplified production process of Suixi Lion Heads allows for faster and more cost-effective production, resulting in streamlined designs that are better suited to contemporary aesthetics and market demands. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of promoting and developing Suixi Lion Head culture through lion dance performances, which can facilitate the preservation and evolution of the tradition. By embracing both traditions and innovations, Suixi Lion Heads continue to play a vital role in the cultural heritage of China, providing a link between the past and the present in lion dance performances.

Abstract:
Trade in lion parts associated with cultural and traditional use is poorly understood. Here we sought to better understand the role and use of lion body parts in the commercial traditional medicine (muthi) trade of South Africa. In 2019 we conducted a semi-structured questionnaire survey of muthi traders (n = 10) and traditional healers (n = 20) which explored the significance and symbolism of lions, traded parts and preferences, sources and supply of lion parts, and perceived sustainability of lion derivatives in the South African muthi trade. Our results suggest a cultural importance of lion associated with the umndawu ancestral spirit in particular, as well as in the training and practice of cultural–spiritual healers. Lion paws and parts thereof were most frequently reported as sold by traders and demanded by healers, correlating with recent trends in body-part removals from lion mortalities. Respondents indicated that lion parts were obtained from a variety of sources including wild lion populations in neighbouring countries and captive-breeding farms. Our findings are discussed relative to current concerns in lion conservation and highlight a need for further understanding of the traditional medicine complex, the influence that ancestral spirits have on lion body-part trade, and increased engagement with traditional medicine stakeholders.

Abstract:
AbstractAn alternative that can be taken to overcome the problem of fulfilling debt payment obligations is to postpone the Obligation of Debt Payment Obligations (PKPU), such as the submission of PKPU done by former Lion Air pilots with Case Number 196 / Pdt.Sus-PKPU / 2019 / PN Niaga Jkt.Pst which won the suit of former Lion Air pilot. However, the results of the decision were not carried out by Lion Air. his writing aims to find out the meaning of the condition of "inability" to pay debts which is the basis of the judge in rejecting the PKPU petition from ex-Lion Air pilot. The method used is to use a normative research method by conducting analysis that is used to focus on the findings of the law, the judge's decision, the opinions of experts, books, and official websites related to this writing. The results of this study explained that the case of PKPU petition by former Lion Air pilots, the judge assessed the condition of "incompetence" based on the going concern value situation in Lion Air where the judge considered that Lion Air's business was still feasible to proceed.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years lion bones have been legally traded internationally to Asian markets from captive-bred sources in South Africa. There are also indications of increasing instances of illegal international trade in wild lion bones. The existence of parallel captive and wild supplies of lion bone are a cause of law enforcement concern regarding the potential for the laundering of illegally sourced bones through legal trade, and present a problem for the assessment of the conservation impact of wild lion bone trade due to the difficulty of determining what market-share wild and captive-bred lion bones account for. Captive-bred and wild lion bone are visually indistinguishable and no reliable method currently exists for distinguishing them. We present a preliminary study that explores the use of DART mass spectrometry as a method to differentiate between captive-bred and wild lion bones. We find that DART is able to differentiate between a batch of captive-bred South African lion bone and a batch of wild lion bone and suggest that DART mass spectrometry shows strong potential as a tool for the regulation and investigation of lion bone trade. Further testing is needed to prove the suitability of this technique. Therefore, we suggest that further research focuses on testing the capability of DART to differentiate between contemporary wild and captive-bred lion bone originating from South Africa, and attempts to identify chemical markers in bone that can be used as indicators of captive-bred origin.

Abstract:
Lion Air is a minimal expense transporter carrier and the biggest commercial aircraft in Indonesia. The Lion Air application on the Google Play Store and AppStore gets a low rating compared to other airlines, Lion Air's social media is less well known among the public and the low number of followers on Lion Air's social media compared to other airlines' social media and many comments containing complaints and Unanswered questions on Lion Air's Instagram page have resulted in a decline in Lion Air's Top Brand Index in the airline category over the last few years, so it is necessary to carry out appropriate marketing communications for Lion Air. The marketing communications carried out by Lion Air are expected to increase the airline's brand equity, so this research was conducted to determine and investigate the impact of web-based and electronic verbal entertainment (e-WOM) promotion exercises on the brand value of the airline Lion Air. This exploration uses quantitative techniques using multiple linear regression methods with a total of 140 respondents. The consequences of investigating the impact of marketing communication activities via social media and electronic word of mouth (e-WOM) together on the brand value of Lion Air airlines show the strong relationship between marketing communications via social media, electronic word of mouth and brand equity.

Abstract:
In landscapes where people and lions coexist, conflicts are common due to livestock predation and threats to human safety. Retaliatory lion killing by humans is often a consequence and is one of the leading causes of lion population declines across Africa. We assessed the effects of retaliatory lion killing on male lion coalitions in the Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem (TME) using a long-term dataset of lion monitoring for ten lion prides, spanning over a fourteen year-period from 2004–2018. We also interviewed 214 respondents about their attitudes and awareness of the effects of retaliatory killing on lions. We found that male lion coalitions were larger and lasted for a longer tenure period in locations with low risk of retaliatory killing, as well as far away from active hunting blocks. Further, young people (18–35 years old) had a more positive attitude towards lion existence and conservation compared to older age classes. Surprisingly, people with primary or secondary level of education were more likely to having lions killed if they attack livestock compared to people with no formal education, although the former supported lion presence for tourism in protected areas. We conclude that retaliatory killing has a large effect on long-term lion coalition dynamics and, thus, survival. Community awareness on retaliation effect varies widely, and we recommend implementing better education and policy strategies at TME to protect the declining carnivore populations.

However, with the rapid development of sports Dragon and Lion Dance movement, its used equipment has seriously lagged behind in technological development. Some equipment is not easy to handle, some can’t be reused and even lead to injury in athletes or other problems. Therefore, based on the research into the development and innovation of new materials with the method of the expert interview、questionnaire and visit investigation, a set of perfect ideas on selecting competitive Dragon and Lion Dance sports equipment are formed preliminarily. The writer hopes for providing a theoretical reference for the Dragon Lion Dance Competition Organizing Committee, the Dragon and Lion Dance teams and coaches, which promotes the further development of Dragon and Lion Dance movement.

Abstract:
AbstractPopulations of the African lion Panthera leo are declining dramatically, with the species’ survival in some areas closely linked to levels of tolerance by rural communities. In Tanzania and Kenya several of the remaining lion populations outside protected areas reside adjacent to rural communities, where they are hunted. As many of these communities are Maasai, research and conservation efforts have focused on understanding and curbing Maasai lion hunting practices. Much of this work has been informed by a dichotomous explanatory model of Maasai lion hunting as either a ‘cultural’ ritual or a ‘retaliatory’ behaviour against predation on livestock. We present qualitative data from interviews (n = 246) in both countries to illustrate that lion hunting by Maasai is related to overlapping motivations that are simultaneously social, emotional and political (in response to conservation initiatives). Additional case study material from Tanzania highlights how politics associated with conservation activities and age-set dynamics affect lion hunting in complex and overlapping ways. Our findings contribute an ethnographic perspective on Maasai lion hunting, people–predator relations, and how these relations are linked to conservation politics.

Abstract:
AbstractThe African lion Panthera leo is an iconic species but it has faced dramatic range reductions and possibly as few as 30,000 individuals remain in the wild. In the absence of detailed ground-based surveys, lion populations may be estimated using regression models based on prey biomass availability but these often overestimate lion densities as a result of a variety of compounding factors. Anthropogenic factors can be key drivers of lion population dynamics and in areas with high human impact lion numbers may be significantly lower than those predicted by prey biomass models. This was investigated in two protected areas in Zimbabwe, where lion population densities were found to be significantly lower than would have been predicted by prey-availability models. High hunting quotas either within or around the protected areas are the most likely cause of the low lion numbers, with quotas in some areas being as high as seven lions per 1,000 km2 in some years. Other factors, including persecution, poisoning and problem animal control, as well as disease and competition with spotted hyaenas Crocuta crocuta, are also discussed.

Abstract:
This paper describes an optimal harvesting policy for a wildebeest-lion prey-predator system in the Serengeti ecosystem with prey refuge. A Holling Type II prey-predator model with a nonlinear harvesting aspect was developed. Theoretical and numerical analyses were performed, and the dynamic behaviour of the system was found to be mathematically well-posed. Data on lion population density from the Serengeti ecosystem were used to fit the model using the maximum-likelihood method. The optimal harvesting policy was numerically determined using Pontryagin’s maximum principle. Furthermore, the impact of prey refuge on the predator population was numerically evaluated. The results of this study highlight the importance of managing the lion population in the ecosystem, specifically in terms of harvesting criteria, to ensure that the threshold for wildebeest-lion coexistence is not exceeded. Based on the findings, this paper argues that the lion population should be given special attention in terms of managerial harvesting criteria so that the threshold for the wildebeest-lion coexistence in the ecosystem is not exceeded. Abstract:
Historically, the lion (Panthera leo) population in Ghana has been little studied and its status is poorly documented. Currently, after recent unsuccessful attempts to find signs of the presence of the species, many authors believe that the Ghanaian lion population is most likely extinct. In an attempt to gather more data, since 2005 we have been carrying out lion surveys in the most important parks and other protected areas of Ghana, mainly focusing on Mole National Park (MNP). We have also been extensively reviewing the literature in an attempt to reconstruct the history of the presence of the lion in the country. Although our research has not provided unequivocal evidence of the presence of the lion, we have collected circumstantial evidence that suggests that a small lion population might still be present in MNP and its surrounding areas.

Abstract:
As we walk through the Assyrian galleries in the British Museum, we may observe curious depictions amongst Assurbanipal's reliefs. A scene from the king's lion hunt, for example, shows a lion emerging from a cage, a lion being shot by an arrow in the back and dashing forward in anger, and a lion leaping at the king (Fig. 1). Our eyes follow these images naturally, from right to left, as a series of movements that conclude on the left of the scene. It was E. Unger who first observed this characteristic feature and named it kinematographische Erzählungsform. J. Reade also noted it in his study of narrative composition in Assyrian sculpture, where the style is called the “strip-cartoon effect”. It appeared sporadically throughout the Neo-Assyrian period but became prominent under Assurbanipal. The identification of these animals as the same lion is established by a text on the far left, beyond this scene. This part of the relief only survives in the form of a drawing. It shows the king grasping the lion by the throat and thrusting a sword into the animal's stomach. The epigraph states that a lion was released from a cage in order to be shot with arrows by the king. The lion did not die, however, so he stabbed it with an iron dagger in order to kill it.

Abstract:
In 1939, excavators uncovered in Hohlenstein-StadelCave nearly 200 mammoth ivory fragments that were refitted as a therianthrope figurine with the head and upper body of a cave lion and the lower body and legs of a human being. It was named the Lion Man. During recent excavations (2008 to 2013) in the StadelCave , a stratigraphic sequence extending from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Aurignacian was discovered. It became clear that the location of the Lion Man during the excavations of 1939 corresponded to the layer Au of the recent 2008–2013 excavations. During the recent work a part of the excavation backdirt from 1939 was also uncovered. Inside this backdirt, 575 fragments of mammoth ivory were found, some belonging to the Lion Man figurine, which was carved from a complete tusk. In 2012–2013 the Lion Man was newly restored and completed to the greatest possible extent. It became apparent that the Lion Man represents a male. Its snout, back, and right side were refitted, and the Lion Man also gained in volume from the added pieces. New insights point towards an intentional deposition of the formerly complete figurine during the Aurignacian.
