The five-part short story ‘All the Animals’ imagines an array of animals who feature in the life of a fictional human family over many years. The story is inspired by qualitative research into human-animal relationships in families with children in Lisbon, Portugal. ‘All the Animals’ aims to offer a fictional ‘thick description’ of multispecies families in a particular time and place, but also to provide a reflection on the role of storytelling in human-animal entanglements.

Abstract:
This article aims at analyzing and discussing the proposed objectives and outcomes of a transmedia project that was run in partnership with CICANT/Universidade Lusófona, in Lisbon, Portugal, and the Portuguese media group Impresa, as part of a European Commission-funded project named CIAKL-Cinema and Industry Alliance for Knowledge and Learning. The Blue Pencil project had as its main objective the development of a transmedia narrative that grouped different platforms and technologies, which included intersections inside the narrative within the genres of entertainment and education. Taking as its central theme the censorship in Portugal during the Estado Novo, the narrative extends into a short fiction film, a documentary, a site with archive material, an online game that challenges writing on freedom of the press, an online store, and a school program, in partnership with the network of school libraries, to launch the debate of censorship in schools.

Professora de Língua e Cultura inglesa em Portugal, Alice Trindade, mais interessada em estudar a realidade do que a ficção, começa a dedicar-se ao jornalismo literário pelo prazer dos textos. Mas tudo muda depois de um encontro da Associação Internacional de Estudos de Jornalismo Literário (IALJS). Apoiada por John Hartsock, que procurava novas vozes, dá início a um percurso até aí inesperado. Torna-se a primeira mulher presidente da IALJS e dá um impulso inédito ao jornalismo literário lusófono. O seu percurso irá fundir-se com um novo fôlego dado à área, até aqui menosprezada pela academia portuguesa. A investigadora é hoje vice-presidente do Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (ISCSP), em Lisboa, que aposta no jornalismo literário como caminho para a internacionalização. She becomes the first woman president of IALJS and gives an unprecedented impulse to the literary journalism lusófono. Your course will merge with a new breath given to the area, hitherto overlooked by the Portuguese academy. The researcher is now vice-president of the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP) in Lisbon, which focuses on literary journalism as a path to internationalization. Abstract:
The 2017 inauguration of a statue in Lisbon, Portugal, to the seventeenth-century Jesuit missionary in colonial Brazil, Father António Vieira, offers an opportunity to discuss history writing as a narrative genre. The statue epitomizes the naturalization of Portugal’s imperial narrative genres of history writing, instantiating their recapitulation into the future. Vieira’s statue exposes how colonial mythologies constitute a narrative of power premised on the erasure of colonial resistance. These dynamics, I argue, are intrinsic to the history of history writing. They arch back to a panegyric tradition of narrating the past that emerged in the eighteenth century in the Portuguese Royal Academy of History. Confronting eighteenth-century fictions demands exposing the epistemic whiteness undergirding Western exercises of recovery of the past and narrating history. Focusing on History as a genre, and its attending exercises of curatorial knowledge-production, exposes the deliberate erasure of Black, Indigenous, and other historically marginalized agents of anti-colonial resistance.

<p>Fato fundador da nação portuguesa, o cerco de Lisboa e o conseqüente extermínio dos mouros remete-nos, incontestavelmente, à mítica figura de seu primeiro rei, Afonso Henriques. A partir de seu título, supomos estar diante de um romance histórico. Entretanto, o autor surpreendenos apresentando outra história, a do revisor Raimundo Silva. Trata-se de um romance em que o passado é revisto pela ótica desta personagem, num trabalho de releitura e de reescrita. Resulta desse processo uma desmistificação dos heróis e da História nacional, bem como uma proposta de reflexão para o futuro. Passado e presente se entrelaçam de maneira a construir um diálogo onde vários pontos de vista substituem a voz una e autoritária do autor. Ao fundirem-se totalidade e particularidade, é traçado um paralelo entre a história particular do protagonista e a conquista da cidade, isto é, os primórdios da História de Portugal. Emaranham-se História e Ficção conferindo um novo sentido àquela, ao mesmo tempo em que nasce uma reflexão. Ao trabalhar o riso e a ironia, José Saramago instaura na estrutura e no discurso deste romance a chamada carnavalização bakhtiniana reforçando a metaficção historiográfica e descortinando novas perspectivas sobre a História de Portugal, a Arte e valores existenciais humanos.</p> <p>Le siège de Lisbonne fut un événement fondateur de la nation portuguaise. L’extermination des maures renvoie au personnage mythique d’Afonso Henriques, premier roi de Portugal. Le titre du roman nous fait penser à un roman historique, cependant l’auteur nous surprend et nous présente une autre histoire, celle du reviseur Raimundo Silva. <em>História do Cerco de Lisboa </em>est un roman où le passé est revu par l’optique de ce personnage dans un travail de relecture et reécriture. De ce processus de démythification et des héros et de l’Histoire naît une proposition de reflexion pour le futur. Passé et présent se lient dans un dialogue où plusieurs points de vue subtituent la voix autoritaire de l’auteur. José Saramago, dans ce roman établit un parallèle entre l’histoire particulier du protagoniste et la conquête de la ville. Il renoue la signification de l’ Histoire en la mélangeant avec la Fiction. Le rire et l’ironie créent la “carnavalisation bakhtinienne” dans la structure et dans le discours de ce roman et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives sur l’Histoire de Portugal, sur l’Art et sur des valeurs humaines.</p>

Abstract:
As part of the larger discussion about the persistent and worldwide problem of access to adequate housing, I examine in this article the effects of government-led rehousing efforts in Lisbon, Portugal, through the lens of filmic representations of those effects. Specifically, I look at how residents of both the self-built neighbourhoods (demolished or soon-to-be) and public housing responded to the Projeto Especial de Realojamento through an analysis of two films, the documentary Outros Bairros and the fictional short film Nada Fazi , which represent a sort of ‘before and after’ of those government efforts. The residents’ voices and stories are compared to each other and set against a backdrop of journalistic reporting and sociological studies.

É membro da União dos Escritores Angolanos. Seus livros já foram traduzidos para mais de 30 idiomas. Pelo selo Tusquets da Editora Planeta do Brasil, publicou O terrorista elegante e outras histórias (2019), livro escrito a quatro mãos com Mia Couto, de quem é amigo. Publicou também A sociedade dos sonhadores involuntários (2017) e O vendedor de passados (2018), romance pelo qual venceu o Independent Foreign Fiction Awards. Seu último romance publicado é Os vivos e os outros, de 2020. Abstract:
Patrick O’Brian inspired this work, with his 1934 book of chronicles “Beasts Royal,” where he gives a voice to animals. Therein, among other animals, we find Skogula, a young sperm whale journeying with his family group across the South Seas and his views on the surrounding world, both underwater and on land. This paper tells a story of historical natural events, from the viewpoint of a fin whale that travelled, rested and stranded in the Tagus estuary mouth (Lisbon, Portugal) during the early 16th century. It allows us to move across time and explore the past of this estuarine ecosystem. What kind of changes took place and how can literature and heritage contribute to understand peoples’ constructions of past environments, local maritime histories and memories? In the second part of this essay we present a fictional short story, supported on historical documental sources and imagery research where Lily, the whale, is the main character. Thus, we see the Tagus estuary as perceived through this whale’s-eye view. Finally, we discuss past earthquakes, whale strandings, the occurrence of seals and dolphins and peoples’ perceptions of the Tagus coastal environment across time. We expect to make a contribution to the field of the marine environmental humanities. We will do so both by addressing, by means of this literary approach, the writing of “new thalassographies,” oceanic historiographies and “historicities” and by including all intervening actors—people, animals and the physical space—in the understanding of the past of more-than-human aquatic worlds.
