Abstract:
Thème récurrent de la littérature québécoise, la nostalgie reste généralement associée à un certain conservatisme. Dans le contexte contemporain de la « surmodernité » (Marc Augé), ce sentiment prend cependant une valeur nouvelle, dont témoigne bien l’oeuvre de Lise Tremblay. Une étude détaillée des romans La pêche blanche et La danse juive ainsi que du recueil de nouvelles La héronnière montre que la nostalgie ne représente pas nécessairement une « tristesse sans objet » (Susan Stewart), un élan stérile portant l’individu vers un passé à la fois idéalisé et inaccessible. Dans l’univers de Lise Tremblay, la nostalgie se définit plutôt comme l’aspiration à un présent transformé, l’élan vers un idéal que porterait l’ensemble de la communauté : elle ouvre les portes de l’utopie.

Dans l’oeuvre de Lise Tremblay et de Nelly Arcan, le corps, et plus particulièrement sa beauté, de même que le pouvoir sexuel qui en découle, apparaît indissociable de la quête identitaire des personnages féminins et conditionne les formes liées au discours romanesque. Par l’analyse des représentations du corps, de son (auto)objectivation et des stratégies adoptées par les auteures pour dénoncer les effets de l’impératif de beauté chez les femmes, il devient donc possible de circonscrire, sur le plan du discours littéraire, l’aliénation dont elles souffrent toujours dans une société qui se dit égalitaire.

Cette thèse de maîtrise est une analyse thématique des odeurs telles qu’elles se présentent dans les trois premiers romans de l’écrivaine québécoise Lise Tremblay : L’hiver de pluie (1990), La pêche blanche (1994) et La danse juive (1997). Ses principaux objectifs sont d’abord l’analyse du thème de l’olfaction présent dans ces trois romans puis sa mise en relation subséquente avec la progression narrative du texte. Pour le cadre théorique, nous avons recours à l’approche phénoménologique de Gaston Bachelard. Ce travail veut démontrer de quelles manières les manifestations olfactives épousent la trajectoire intime des héros. À partir des résultats obtenus par l’étude des œuvres de Lise Tremblay, nous voulons jeter les bases d’un outil de classification des odeurs pouvant trouver sa mise en application à d’autres corpus littéraires.

Abstract:
Influenced by the principles once denounced by Aurélien Boivin and Cécile Dubé, Marie-Célie Agnant and Lise Tremblay tell the story of two women faced by silence and a general misunderstanding. It is by exposing the story of Élise and Emma, who have been stigmatized with madness, that Tremblay and Agnant expose a dark side of the power of discourse: it can liberate or reinforce a sense of alienation or oppression. We are led to rethink its problematical force through the alienated wanderings of a character on a quest to overcome somehow a disappointing love affair (Élise) and the account of the tribulations of a young woman accused of infanticide (Emma). Agnant and Tremblay also exploit the theme of space (whether it be historical, physical or symbolic) by carrying us into both the maze of History and that of Quebec City. Among other states and situations, their characters are undeniably made prisoners of a physical space that conditions their discourses: a hospital for Emma and an old fortified city for Élise. The walls that are holding back Emma and Élise are nothing but the visual aspect of a more profound and tragic ailment that will only be exposed once the madwomen of Tremblay and Agnant, paradoxically, reclaim its power.

Abstract:
Le redressement du peuplier suite à une stimulation gravitationnelle implique un processus de courbure locale lié à une élongation différentielle dans les zones en croissance primaire et un processus de courbure lié à la différenciation du bois de réaction dans les zones en croissance secondaire. Ces modifications morphogénétiques sont détectées au niveau de la région basale et apicale de la tige de peuplier inclinée. La région basale a développé le bois de tension une semaine après l'inclinaison, alors que la région apicale est réorientée 24 h après l'inclinaison. Ceci implique que les tissus de la région basale et apicale de la tige répondent de façon différente à l'inclinaison. Une étude d'expression menée au niveau du transcriptome a été réalisée à partir des ARNm extraits de tiges ayant été ou non inclinées pendant 45 min. En 45 min., la plante ne s'est pas redressée, mais a perçu le signal. Cette approche a permis d'identifier des transcrits de gènes impliqués dans la graviperception. L'étude de la régulation du transcriptome a été élargie par une analyse de la variation de l'accumulation des protéines extraites de tiges inclinées ou non. Les profils d'électrophorèse bidimensionnelle des conditions non stressées et stressées de la région basale et apicale ont montré une variation dans l'accumulation des protéines. Une analyse par RT-PCR quantitative de certaines protéines différentielles dont l'activité est potentiellement régulée par la thioredoxine (Trx) montre une accumulation de transcrits variable entre la région apicale et basale et des changements d'expression rapides et transitoires. Une étude complémentaire sur 2 thiorédoxines (Trx) (western blot, immunolocalisation in situ) a permis de montrer d'une part l'expression de Trx h1 une semaine après l'inclinaison et d'autre part la localisation de Trx h1 et Trx h2 au niveau des amyloplastes. L'ensemble de ces résultats a conduit à suggérer que les évènements moléculaires conduisant à la réorientation de la tige sont différents selon le tissu analysé. Probablement, chaque partie de la tige reçoit et répond différemment au signal gravité.

Abstract:
Les contraintes environnementales dans un monde en changement remettent en cause la survie des plantes ; les plus drastiques sont les contraintes abiotiques, comme les stress hydriques, thermiques, ou la pollution par les métaux lourds. Les mécanismes inductibles de la tolérance des plantes sous stress ont été étudiés par une approche physiologique combinée à une analyse protéomique. Des plants de Populus tremula x P. alba genotype 717-1B4 ont été exposés à plusieurs contraintes en chambre phytotronique : 1) un sol contenant des concentrations importantes de Cd2+ ou Zn2+, 2) une sécheresse induite par arrêt d'arrosage, 3) une contrainte thermique par élévation subite ou graduelle de 22 à 42°C. Les paramètres physiologiques des plantes ont été suivis au cours des traitements ainsi que durant la période de recouvrement qui a suivi les contraintes hydriques et thermiques. La réponse de stress a été caractérisée par ces paramètres physiologiques et par les changements dans les profils protéomiques du tissu foliaire et de la zone cambiale. Les aspects communs et particuliers du stress induit par chaque contrainte ont été décrits. Les données rassemblées dans cette étude, en enrichissant les connaissances sur la gamme de réponse des essences ligneuses, contibuent à déterminer la frontière entre le stress générique et les réponses plus spécifiques ; elles apportent également des éléments de réponse à l'utilisation du peuplier en phytoremédiation des sols pollués par les métaux.

Abstract:
En 1984, le Ministère de l'environnement du Québec a mis sur pied un programme d'échantillonnage de l'eau potable dont l'objectif était la détection et la quantification des micropolluants organiques. Les résultats obtenus révélèrent la présence de plusieurs produits de sous-chloration dont les principaux étaient les trihalométhanes (THMs). Un suivi de la concentration des THMs dans diverses municipalités fut ensuite effectué, afin de dresser un tableau plus global de la situation des THMs au Québec. La Division des Écosystèmes Urbains (D.E.U.) assure maintenant le suivi des campagnes d'échantillonnage. La présente recherche fait partie intégrante de ce programme, puisque dans un premier temps, elle traite les résultats de la campagne d'un échantillonnage bi-mensuel effectué par le D.E.U. pour la période s'échelonnant de mai 1989 à avril 1990. Elle traite ensuite les résultats des campagnes d'échantillonnage effectuées à l'été 1993 et l'hiver 1994. A cette fin, un bilan de la production des sous-produits de la chloration a été établi en insistant particulièrement sur le taux de THMs dont les principaux composés sont: le chloroforme, le bromodichlorométhane, le dibromochlorométhane et le bromoforme. Les concentrations en THMs observées dans l'eau potable des réseaux sélectionnés sont, à une exception près, inférieures à la concentration maximale permise selon le Règlement sur l'eau potable, soit 350 ug/L. Afin de mieux comprendre ce qui influence la production des THMs, une évaluation des principaux facteurs, tels la quantité de matières organiques, la température, le pH et la concentration du chlore résiduel, a été réalisée. Divers moyens pour mieux contrôler la production des THMs ont également été proposés. Cependant, chaque type d'eau possède des caractéristiques qui lui sont propres. Il est donc difficile d'établir des mesures générales qui pourraient s'appliquer à l'ensemble des sources d'eau. Un modèle mathématique de prédiction a été créé afin d'estimer la production de THMs dans l'eau potable. Une étude statistique des résultats de la campagne de l'échantillonnage bi-mensuel a d'abord été réalisée. Des corrélations entre le carbone organique dissous (C.O.D.), la concentration de chlore résiduel libre et la température versus la production de THMs ont été effectuées. Une régression multiple a permis la formulation d'une équation de prédiction. La fiabilité de cette équation a été testée en effectuant des calculs prédictifs des concentrations des THMs, à partir des données des paramètres mesurés pour les campagnes été 1993 et hiver 1994. Des intervalles de confiance ont ensuite été déterminés. L'analyse statistique des résultats a permis d'expliquer 72% de la variation des THMs par les variations des trois descripteurs sélectionnés par la régression multiple soit, le C.O.D., la température et la concentration du chlore résiduel.

In this chapter, the first of three dedicated to films from post–World War II Italy, Luchino Visconti’s The Earth Trembles becomes the locus for a reflection on the relation among gesture, generosity, and landscape. The visual weight of the Cyclops Islands as destiny in the film’s frame is noted along with the difference in how members of the Valastri family touch and hold objects, especially the women of the household. An affinity between how objects are held on screen and how the spectator is urged to hold what she sees on screen is discussed, along with the importance of the long shot in Visconti’s aesthetic realism as a mode of creating attention.

L'activité physique (AP) est définie par l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS; 2014) comme «toute dépense énergétique résultant d'un mouvement produit par la contraction d'au moins un muscle squelettique» (e.g., marcher, les tâches ménagères, monter les marches d'escalier). L'AP se distingue d'une part, de l'exercice physique qui réfère à une sous-catégorie incluant des activités plus structurées, répétitives et qui vise à améliorer ou à entretenir la condition physique et d'autre part, de la sédentarité qui fait référence à des comportements caractérisés par peu d'efforts physiques et par une dépense énergétique faible (Hallal et al., 2012). Lorsqu'une personne est allongée ou assise devant un écran, dans les transports en commun ou encore en train de lire un livre, cette personne est en réalité dans un comportement sédentaire. Par conséquent, il est possible d'avoir un rythme de vie actif tout en ayant un niveau élevé de sédentarité (Chaput, Olds, and Tremblay, 2018).

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the role of astrology in Jewish medicine, which was another field of great significance for therapeutics. The Bible exhorted Israel not to fear 'portents in the sky' that caused the pagans to tremble. While they rejected the speculations of astrologers of other nations and doubted the accuracy of their predictions, the actual idea of astral influences recurred frequently in their own writings. Knowledge of basic astrological concepts was crucial to an understanding of many aspects of Jewish culture, above all the calendar and the rabbinic discussions surrounding it. The conviction that the seven planets influenced human life and health, in particular at the hour of one's birth, had put down deep roots in the popular consciousness. The Jews perceived a link between the movements of the heavenly bodies and the comparable phenomena of dying and returning to life that they observed in nature. In the folk imagination, the image of the sky was enriched by the conviction that everybody had a light, or lamp, up there which was extinguished with their death. It is pertinent to add that the sun, moon, and stars (and sometimes also the seven planets) featured extremely frequently in the texts of Jewish conjurations. They were mentioned above all in incantations, alongside the attributes of God and religious paraphernalia endowed with an aura of sanctity. Astrology was an intrinsic aspect of views on the rules governing the world that dominated thought in Jewish society until the early twentieth century.

As evidence grew that high blood cholesterol levels were linked to heart disease, scientists in both academia and industry began to look for drugs to lower cholesterol as early as the 1950s. Before Akira Endo discovered the first statin, mevastatin, in the 1970s, many things, including hormones, vitamins, and resins, were tried to lower cholesterol. Some worked, and some did not. Thyroid hormone was one of the fi st drugs used for that purpose. The cholesterol-lowering properties of dextro-thyroxine were discovered by serendipity. At one point, surgical removal of part of the thyroid gland had been used to relieve angina, the pain brought on by exercise in coronary artery disease. Doctors observed that thyroid removal also raised the blood cholesterol level, which in turn sped up arterial degeneration. By deduction, the doctors reasoned that taking thyroid hormone should then decrease blood cholesterol levels. Initial clinical trials proved this theory, and dextro-thyroxine was used to lower cholesterol beginning in the 1950s, when thyroid extract became a standard treatment for hypercholesterolemic (high cholesterol) patients. Unfortunately, too much thyroid hormone made patients tremble all the time. Later, a large-scale, long-term clinical trial named the “Coronary Drug Project” established the association of dextro-thyroxine with ischemic heart disease as a severe side eff ect in men. As a consequence, thyroid hormone treatment was discontinued. Women, in contrast to men, enjoy natural cardiac protection through the action of the female sex hormones, the estrogens. In 1930, a minute quantity of estrogen was isolated from the ovaries of 80,000 sows. In the 1950s, reports appeared that estrogen could lower blood cholesterol levels even more effectively than nicotinic acid, another anticholesterol drug used at the time. Unfortunately, men on estrogen for too long began to develop feminine traits, including breast enlargement and loss of libido, and other side effects, although they did acquire relative immunity from heart attacks until late in life. Due to the lack of safe and effiicacious drugs, some doctors seemed willing to take their chances with estrogens.

Abstract:
Prosthetic sockets are one of the most important pieces of equipment for a transtibial amputee to maintain a regular life. Rapid Prototyping is becoming mature and low-cost to fit the CAD system that can conserve the shapes of the stump and socket for reproducing the sockets. If the stump shape can be accurately obtained and the prosthetists’ expertise can be included in a CAD system, then a prosthetic socket will be easily designed by a prosthetist. The stump was scanned to get the shape for the construction and modification of the stump model in a CAD system. However, the stump trembled during the scanning process, the scanner was sensitive about the skin move, so that the scanned data will not exactly represent the real stump shape. This study used a vacuum casting system to gain the stump model instead of creating a positive plaster model in the traditional process of fabricating prosthetic sockets. The stump shape under various vacuum pressures was obtained using a scanning machine and built in a CAD system. The CAD model of the stump will be modified to meet the load-bearing capability of the specific amputee. The use of the vacuum casting method is expected to simplify the design of a socket that will be fabricated by a rapid prototyping machine. Simplifying the designs of transtibial socket can decrease the dependence of human experience and promote the quality and stability of prosthetic sockets.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to present both theoretical and practical aspects related to student’s test anxiety. The role of this paper is to inform the teachers about haw the word” test” should be used in the school context and to highlight the aspects of anxiety and everything that lies behind this rich subject. The main objective underlying this paper is the detailed analysis of what anxiety means and haw it manifests itself among the students. The paper is structured of 3 chapters, two of them presenting the theoretical part and one practical part. In the first part called, Theoretical Approach” the paper aims to analyse the following: anxiety, anxiety theories and contemporary theories and implications of anxiety towards the test. In the second chapter called, Anxiety and stress towards tests” the paper focuses on the following aspects: anxiety about test, anxiety disorders and their effects on personality development, the role of tests in education children of primary school, blocking anxiety and recovering from failure, affectivity and perfectionism. In the third chapter named, the research methodology” I will try to analyse haw children are affected during the assessment and haw high their level of anxiety is when they are faced with these situations. Also, in performing the processing and interpretation of the data from this research, the statistical method was used. Thus, after centralizing the results of the students participating in the study, we reached the following conclusions: during the tests some of students trembled their hands, often students forget what they have learned or have problems in remembering. Many students do not give 100% performance when undergoing tests because they are stressed, became anxious and they block. The teacher has to teach children that the role of testing is to figure out where you went wrong or what needs to be improved. From study the material needed for this paper I was able to discover what each child (even myself) felt and lived when he heard the word, test”.
