Current data analysis techniques have demonstrated the capability of resolving on the order of 104 white dwarf binaries from a 2 year observation. Resolved binaries are either at high frequencies or large amplitudes. Such systems are more likely to be high-mass binaries, a subset of which will be progenitors of SNe Ia in the double degenerate scenario. We report on results of a st

The advancements in the multimedia technologies result in the growth of the image databases. To retrieve images from such image databases using visual attributes of the images is a challenging task due to the close visual appearance among the visual attributes of these images, which also introduces the issue of the semantic gap. In this article, we recommend a novel method established on the bag-of-words (BoW) model, which perform visual words integration of the local intensity order pattern (LIOP) feature and local binary pattern variance (LBPV) feature to reduce the issue of the semantic gap

A full description, diagnostic characters, ecological requirements, conservation status, SEM, and seed micro-morphology of this narrow endemic are provided. It is taxonomically well differentiated from the other hitherto known species of the genus, which are restricted to the Mediterranean and Macaronesian regions. Its taxonomic isolation is also confirmed by a phenetic analysis based on morphological features. The new species mainly differs from the other taxa of Solenopsis in having sub-caulescent

A fair amount has been written on the subject of reasoning about pointer algorithms. There was a peak about 1980 when everyone seemed to be tackling the formal verification of the Schorr–Waite marking algorithm, including Gries (1979, Morris (1982) and Topor (1979). Bornat (2000) writes: “The Schorr–Waite algorithm is the first mountain that any formalism for pointer aliasing should climb”. Then it went more or less quiet for a while, but in the last few years there has been a resurgence of interest, driven by new ideas in relational algebras (Möeller, 1993), in data refinement Butler (1999),

Piglets are born with 8 very sharp ‘needle-teeth’ - 4 incisors and 4 canines. These pointed teeth grow outwards, two on either side in each jaw, leaving an open space in the front of the mouth. In intensively run units, the tips of these teeth are usually removed soon after birth, using a pair of side cutter pliers. This is said to reduce the severity of piglet face wounding, caused by natural competition for space at the udder and during play. Reducing injury by clipping teeth is also said to limit the sites of entry for micro-organisms. Blunt clippers and clipping teeth too close to the gum

Abstract We present two-stage list sampling estimators and methodology that are useful in a forest inventory context. The advantages of this sampling method are discussed and illustrated with an inventory of a 3,419-acre timber tract. In this example, two-stage list sampling resulted in strata level and tract level estimates that were very close to estimates from a more intensive cruise that used twice as much field sampling effort.
