Full text
Abstract:
The Metric Epistles of Albertino Mussato (1261-1329) are a collection of 20 compositions in Latin verse (of which, 12 in elegiac couplets, 8 in hexameters, for a total of 1,570 verses) composed between 1309 and 1326 and addressed to different recipients. The list of recipients includes friends of the author and representatives of the Paduan political and intellectual élite of the early 14th century such as the judges Rolando da Piazzola, Giovanni da Vigonza and Paolo da Teolo, the notary Zambono d’Andrea and Marsilio Mainardini; masters of grammar and rhetoric such as the Venetian Giovanni Cassio, Bonincontro from Mantua and Guizzardo from Bologna; religious personalities such as the Dominican friars Benedetto and Giovannino da Mantova, respectively lecturer and professor of theology at the Studium Generale of the convent of S. Agostino in Padua; collective recipients, such as the College of Artists and fellow citizens of Padua. After an editio princeps was printed in Venice in 1636 on the basis of a now lost manuscript, a critical edition of the Epistles is published here for the first time, including the complete corpus of the texts in the light of their entire manuscript tradition. The texts are accompanied by an Italian translation and a detailed commentary, which mainly aims to bring to light and analyse the dense intertextuality of Mussato’s poem (in particular classical Latin sources), reconsidering the cultural background of the author and his contemporaries in the context of the so-called ‘Paduan prehumanism’ and an ideal dialogue with Dante’s coeval biographical and literary experiences.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, we contextualize the data of the canon lists further by listing the contents of significant manuscripts in the Greek, Syriac, Latin, and Hebrew traditions. These manuscripts help the reader further understand the problems raised by the lists themselves. For example, a typical canon list will only mention ‘Daniel’, but the manuscripts clarify that under this title were also included the books of Susanna and Bel and the Dragon. When the lists and the manuscripts are read and analysed together, the reader can further conceptualize the contents of the canon. Furthermore, a codex typically contains more books than the normal canon list catalogues. This means that the codex does not equal the canon, putting into relief the narrow contents of the lists against the background of wider manuscript contents.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter contains texts, translations, and analysis of the nine early canon lists (Old Testament and/or New Testament) in Latin in probable chronological order: Muratorian Fragment, Codex Claromontanus, Mommsen Catalogue, Hilary of Poitiers, Jerome of Stridon, Rufinus of Aquileia, Breviarium Hipponense, Augustine of Hippo, and Pope Innocent I. The Latin West tells a slightly different story of the canon to the Greek East. Only Hilary, Jerome, and Rufinus present the OT canon similar to the Jews and the Greek lists, while Mommsen, Breviarium Hipponense, Augustine, Claromontanus, and Innocent present a wider canon, including the deuterocanonical books. The NT lists manifest dispute over the inclusion of Hebrews but generally include the Catholic Epistles and Revelation.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter we provide texts, translations, and analysis of the two earliest Jewish canon lists: Josephus and the Babylonian Talmud. Josephus provides the earliest definitive ‘list’ of the biblical books. In actuality, he says there are only twenty-two books and then groups them according to five books of Moses, thirteen by prophets, and four remaining books. He does not specifically tell the reader the contents of the Jewish canon. The Babylonian Talmud provides evidence from as early as 200 CE or as late as the sixth century CE for what books the Jews considered to be canonical. The list implies a number of twenty-four books. Though these lists are not Christian, every history of the development of the canon requires analysis and synthesis of these sources.

Phillips, Angus. Trade Publishing. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199574797.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
Trade publishing at Oxford University Press included those titles aimed at a broader audience, including general non-fiction, illustrated histories and encyclopedias, World’s Classics, and children’s books. Originally a separate operation of the London Business, overseas trade publishing later devolved to the branches while domestic trade titles were amalgamated into the Oxford academic lists. Trade titles involved a higher level of risk, deeper discounts to booksellers, larger author royalty payments, and investment in marketing and sales. The Press gradually minimized these risks by introducing greater oversight from the Delegates on manuscript selection, and by reducing the number of individual titles and concentrating on series. The chapter highlights the significant series and individual trade titles from across the Press, and considers the trade list both in its interaction with OUP’s wider academic and scholarly interests and within the context of commercial trade publishing.

Abstract:
After a brief introduction on stemmatic method, this book contains genealogical investigations of the textual traditions of Quintus Curtius Rufus and then Dictys Cretensis. The sections on each author begin with a list of MSS and incunables that will be discussed (they number just over 150 for Curtius, about 80 for Dictys) and then a survey of existing scholarship. There then follows the classification of the MSS and incunables; most of the MSS of both authors were produced in Italy in the fifteenth-century. In the section on Curtius MSS B = Bern, Burgerbibliothek 451, Br = Brussels 10161, and A= Paris, lat. 5720, owned by Petrarch are shown to have been very productive. For Dictys it is argued that a stemma codicum can be established. First witnesses related to G = Sankt Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek 197 (these include an important lost MS of Poggio) are discussed, then those related to MS E, the codex Aesinas, owned by Stefano Guarnieri. There follows discussion of the archetype, of the way in which proper attention to the stemma codicum can improve the text, and of the excerpts from Dictys found in MSS of Dares.
