Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine two channels through which accounting standard differences could affect cross-listing: compliance costs and/or comparability benefits. Design/methodology/approach The authors use two settings to disentangle the two channels. First, financial reporting requirements are more stringent for cross-listings via direct listings than cross-listings via depositary receipts; as a result, the effect of compliance costs (if any) would be manifested differently in the two venues of cross-listings. Second, some host countries allow foreign firms to report under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) without mandating IFRS for domestic firms; compared to host countries that mandate IFRS for both domestic and foreign firms, these IFRS-permitting countries provide a setting to test the importance of comparability benefits while holding constant compliance costs. Findings The authors find that prior to IFRS adoption, direct listings decrease with accounting standards differences between two countries while depositary receipts increase with such differences, consistent with the costs of complying with host country’s accounting standards affecting firms’ cross-listing decisions. After the harmonization of accounting standards, the authors find that IFRS-mandating host countries gain cross-listings from other IFRS-mandating jurisdictions, while IFRS-permitting countries do not experience such gains. These combined results suggest that accounting related compliance costs and comparability benefits both influence cross-listing decisions. Originality/value The paper employs unique settings that enable an in-depth examination of the role of compliance costs vs that of comparability benefits on cross-listing decisions. The settings employed by the authors allow them to disentangle the two channels and provide an important insight that accounting standard-related compliance costs and comparability benefits both affect cross-listing decisions.

Abstract:
In this paper, we examine the Long-run performance of initial public offerings (IPOs). The data has been taken for 31 IPOs from the year 2000 to 2003. We have used Logistic Regression Model through SPSS Version 16 to test for the relationship between long run performance of IPOs and short run performance variables of the company. The analysis shows that the long run variables have no relationship with short-run variables or else have negative relationship. With some of the variables it has positive relationship. It shows anomaly. The companies having listing gain have negative current ratio, debt equity ratio and return on net worth and the companies having short-run gain has negative current ratio and debt equity ratio. The theory supports the view that for IPO markets to be efficient there should be low listing gain, moderate short-run gain and high long-run gain. Only then there will be long term development of IPO market. But the actual situation is opposite. The companies have listing gain, short-run gain but they are not able to give long run gain.

Abstract:
Covid-19 pandemic has affected all the parts of the society across the globe in different ways and magnitude. During the lock down period, the trading, investing, and stock market participation among the investors have been increased among the people across the globe. To take the benefit of liquidity of the market, listing of the shares of companies in the recognized stock exchanges in India have increased during this pandemic. To assess the impact of Covid on the performance of IPOs, five listing of IPOs of the pre Covid period and five listing of IPOs of during the covid period of construction and engineering sector have been considered. The average listing gain of the prices of the IPOs of Covid period accounted higher as compared to the average listing gains of the prices of the IPOs listed in the market in pre-Covid period. The average listing day gain of the prices of the IPOs of Covid period accounted also higher as compared to the average listing day gains of the prices of the IPOs listed in the market in pre- Covid period. Average 30 days’ return of the prices of IPOs listed in pre Covid period recorded higher as compared to the average 30 days’ return of the prices the IPOs listed in Covid period. The result of pair t test indicates that there is no significant difference of the listing gain of the prices of the IPOs listed before covid and the covid period.

Abstract:
To secure technological and industrial competitiveness, the KOSDAQ market is implementing a technology-growth listing system. In general, such listed companies have been recognized for their technological prowess at the time of listing, but there are few cases where the technology has been commercialized or realized. Nevertheless, the largest shareholder sold their shares after the lock-up period using the listing system to obtain capital gain. A company that utilizes the listing system for the purpose of acquiring such private gain may overestimate the pro-forma profit and loss to evaluate the company value higher than that of a company that did not sell its shares. Therefore, we verified whether the technology-growth listed companies, in which the largest shareholder sold their shares after the lock-up period, overestimate the pro-forma profit and loss compared to those that did not. The analysis revealed that the technology-growth listed companies in which the largest shareholder sold their shares after the lock-up period overestimated the pro-forma net income for the first year compared to the companies that did not.

Abstract:
Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) are critical mechanisms for companies seeking to raise capital and expand their operations. The increasing frequency of IPO listings on Bursa Malaysia highlights the need to assess their post-listing performance. However, many investors struggle to understand the factors that influence the success or failure of these offerings, leading to significant variability in investment returns. This study aims to evaluate the post-listing performance of the top 20 IPOs on Bursa Malaysia as of October 24, 2024, by analysing key metrics such as percentage gains or losses in share prices and market capitalization. The research employs a systematic approach, utilizing data collected from Bursa Malaysia's official records and reports. The study calculates the percentage gain or loss for each IPO by comparing the initial listing price with the current market price. Additionally, the IPOs are categorized based on their market segment (ACE Market or Main Market) and ranked according to their performance. The principal results indicate notable differences in performance among the top 20 IPOs, with specific trends emerging related to market categorization and investor sentiment. The findings suggest that certain sectors and market conditions significantly influence the success of IPOs, providing valuable insights for investors and companies considering future listings. In conclusion, this research contributes to the understanding of IPO performance in Malaysia and highlights the importance of thorough analysis for maximizing investment returns. The results are intended to inform stakeholders, including investors and policymakers, about the dynamics of IPO success in the Malaysian context.

Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between financial leverage and competitive strategies based on the investigation into the cross-listing announcements, through which the financial condition of a firm might shape the competition outcome. The empirical evidence shows that cross-listing announcements normally attract positive market responses to cross-listed firms but incur negative market responses to rival firms, especially upon the strategic substitutes competition. Cross-listed firms obtain more positive market responses if their financial leverage is lower, but the firms have no advantages when they are financially constrained. Less leveraged rival firms could weaken the negative impact and even gain positive market responses upon the strategic complements competition. JEL classification: G14, G32, M16

Abstract:
Debates continue to surround the system in the United States for allocating transplantable cadaveric organs, due in large part to the scarcity of such organs in relation to the number of individuals waiting to undergo transplantation. Candidates awaiting transplantation gain access to cadaveric organs by being placed by individual transplant programs on the national list of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), overseen by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). In recent years, the UNOS board has visited (and revisited) the issue of multiple listing, that is, allowing one candidate to be registered on the waiting lists of two or more transplant programs, and has continued to permit multiple listing.

Abstract:
Purpose – A significant number of Chinese companies are listed overseas. The authors aim to examine whether overseas locations affect their financing decision, specifically their capital structure choice. Design/methodology/approach – Most of the Chinese overseas listed companies are listed in the USA and Hong Kong. As the institutional quality of the USA is better than Hong Kong, the authors, therefore, choose to build the hypotheses from the “law and finance” literature. Specifically, the authors argue that the better institutional environment of the USA can mitigate the information asymmetry problem and the agency problem of financing via equity. Consequently, firms listed in the USA will rely more on equity and have lower leverage ratio. The difference in leverage ratio of US listed and Hong Kong listed companies should be larger when the marginal benefit of better information environment is larger. Findings – Referring to various data sources, the authors construct a comprehensive list of overseas listed companies in the USA and Hong Kong. The authors collect the accounting and stock performance information from Datastream/Worldscope and the equity offering data from Global New Issue database. The empirical findings provide strong support of the hypotheses: the leverage is 15 percent lower for US listed companies than the Hong Kong listed companies; the results are stronger when the firms face more severe information asymmetry problem; the stock price reacts less negatively for seasoned equity offering in the USA than in Hong Kong. Practical implications – Most of the Chinese companies decided to be listed overseas because they cannot be listed in the Mainland Chinese stock exchanges. One of the most important motivation is to access to external capital to support firm growth. As the main channel of external financing in the overseas markets is equity since debt is still mainly domestically based, one implication of this paper is that Chinese companies can gain better access to external capital in the USA than in Hong Kong and relax their financial constraint. Originality/value – There are a considerable number of Chinese companies listed in the overseas markets. Many successful and famous companies are among them. However, almost no research has been done based on them. This paper documents some very important phenomenon of this market. The authors wish that more studies will be conducted. In addition, the study also complements the existing studies on how institutional environment affects corporate financial behavior.

Abstract:
Today, listening to podcasts is a common way of consuming media and it has been proven that listeners are much more recipient to advertisement when being addressed in a podcast, rather than through radio. This study has been performed at Acast, an audio-on-demand and podcast platform that hosts, monetizes, and distributes podcasts globally. With the use of machine learning, the goal of this study has been to obtain a credible estimate of how listeners outside the application tend to respond when exposed to ads in podcasts. The study includes a number of different machine learning models, such as Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Neural Networks and kNN. It was shown that machine learning could be applied to obtain a credible estimate of how ads are received outside the Acast application, based on data collected from the application. Additionally, out of the models included in the study, Random Forest was proven being the best performing model for this problem. Please note that the results presented in the report are based on a mix of real and simulated data.

Abstract:
This research aims to explore the clinical usefulness of an individualized outcome measure, the Psychological Outcome Profiles (PSYCHLOPS). PSYCHLOPS is selfreport measure that invites the patient to build his own outcome questionnaire. Our goal is to understand to what extent the items indicated by the patient add qualitative information, when compared with standardized outcome measures. A total of 107 adult patients in treatment in two sites filled in the PSYCHLOPS and two standardized measures (CORE-OM and PHQ-9). A total of 279 patient-generated items where analysed and categorized in 65 content sub-themes. Results show that “Work – related problems” was the most common sub-theme indicated by patients. Approximately one quarter of sub-themes (26%) were not found in CORE-OM items and 66% (n=43) were not found in PHQ-9 items. Seventy nine (74%) patients reported at least one problem that is not covered in CORE-OM. Almost the entire sample (96.2% of the patients) reported at least one response that did not map to a PHQ-9 item. Throughout this study it was revealed the complexity of the answers given by the patients; O que ganhamos ao ouvir os pacientes?

Full text
Abstract:
L2 proficiency gains during study abroad vary widely across individuals and programs, and much of the research in the study abroad literature attempts to identify the causes of this variance. Social network data has proven useful in explaining some of the variance in oral proficiency gains (Baker-Smemoe, Dewey, Bown, & Martinsen, 2014; Isabelli-García, 2006), and the current study builds on those findings by applying the same methodology to listening and reading proficiency in addition to speaking. Proficiency gains in listening, reading, and speaking were measured for 17 students from a US university studying abroad in Nanjing, China for one semester. Social network measures focused on interaction with native speakers (NS) were taken at the beginning, middle, and end of the study abroad program using the Study Abroad Social Interaction Questionnaire. Linear regression analyses showed that social network measures accounted for nearly 46% of the variance in listening gains, nearly 82% of the variance in reading gains, and nearly 46% of the variance in oral proficiency gains. These findings make a strong case for applying social network methods to understand listening and reading proficiency gains in study abroad.

Abstract:
This book provides the answers to controversial questions about religious liberties in the United States and connected issues through balanced, thorough, and nonjudgmental coverage of the issues in a reference format. The subject of religious freedom is important to all American citizens, regardless of religious affiliation or ethnicity. Are the rights of religious individuals being eroded, or is religion being unfairly used to deny basic secular rights to individuals? How will religious institutions adapt to changes in legislation that have an impact on how they operate? Does the Supreme Court have the right to enforce these changes? Finally, how can the precarious separation of church and state be maintained while simultaneously respecting both institutions? This single-volume work provides an introduction that addresses the historical background of religious freedom in America, accurately explains the latest legal developments in religious freedom in the United States, and presents an unbiased account of the probable impact of the new Freedom of Religion laws in the continuing culture war. Readers will gain insight into key controversies such as prayer in public schools, creationism versus evolution, abortion, religious objections to medical care, religious displays in public places, same-sex marriage and LGBT rights, and state and federal religious freedom acts. The book also includes perspective essays by outside contributors, a selection of useful primary documents, a listing of print and nonprint resources, a chronology, and a glossary of terms.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on a commitment that has been gaining force among practical theologians and Christian ethicists since the early 2000s. The commitment is that ethnographic fieldwork can be used to generate theological reflection and knowledge. The aim is to encourage a substantive shift, from a one-way engagement into an actual and generative dialogue between ethnographic theologians and anthropological ethnographers. The animating question is this: What does each dialogue partner—anthropology and theology—stand to gain from such an open exchange about ethnography? To address this question, the chapter argues that ethnographic theologians can work with a more diverse conception of ethnography while anthropological ethnographers can learn how theologians engage normativity in their work. It concludes by reflecting on genres of ethnographic writing as an opportunity for dialogue.

Abstract:
Does listening to other people—or reading what they have written—supply us with knowledge in a unique or distinctive way? Do we need special reasons to trust people in order to gain knowledge from them? Some philosophers argue that testimony never actually provides knowledge. At the other extreme, some philosophers argue that testimony provides knowledge, and in a distinctive way. In this view, testimony is a special channel for receiving knowledge, a channel with the same basic status as sensory perception and reasoning. ‘Testimony’ explores both extremes, as well as the middle ground of reductionism, to identify the factors that matter most to how we absorb what people say.

AbstractThis chapter outlines the diversity of ways that project participants have developed and structured their working lives and enterprises. Within these conversations we will gain an understanding of the range of people, personal acumen, skills, and public and private investments that are garnered by these creative entrepreneurs to develop and sustain their practices. Through the lens of Milanesi’s three forms of ‘passion entrepreneurship’: lifestyle, accidental, and hybrid entrepreneur (Milanesi 2018, p. 425), why makers pursue this work, despite the often relatively low levels of income to be derived from creative self-employment, is explored. The chapter concludes with a reference listing of some of the key practical advice offered by the research participants.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the volume’s purpose of providing a multimedia account of a ‘listening journey’ that the author has undertaken over the course of a year in order to gain more insight into everyday sounds, how we affect them, and how they―in turn―affect us. It emphasizes the importance of conceiving of everyday sounds as worthy of our attention, care, and receptivity, so that we can enact new patterns of engagement with these sounds. We then turn to the first ‘diary entry’ recording the beginning of the author’s listening journey, with its accompanying audio file. Here, the author sets out further reasoning for questioning the everyday and finding the unfamiliar in the familiar.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the big data era, with the large volume of available data collected by various sensors deployed in urban areas and the recent advances in AI techniques, urban computing has become increasingly important to facilitate the improvement of people’s lives, city operation systems, and the environment. In this chapter, we introduce the challenges, methodologies, and applications of AI techniques for urban computing. We first introduce the background, followed by listing key challenges from the perspective of computer science when AI techniques are applied. Then we briefly introduce the AI techniques that are widely used in urban computing, including supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, unsupervised learning, matrix factorization, graphic models, deep learning, and reinforcement learning. With the recent advances of deep-learning techniques, models such as CNN and RNN have shown significant performance gains in many applications. Thus, we briefly introduce the deep-learning models that are widely used in various urban-computing tasks. Finally, we discuss the applications of urban computing including urban planning, urban transportation, location-based social networks (LBSNs), urban safety and security, and urban-environment monitoring. For each application, we summarize major research challenges and review previous work that uses AI techniques to address them.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter addresses the first building block of sonic interactions in virtual environments, i.e., the modeling and synthesis of sound sources. Our main focus is on procedural approaches, which strive to gain recognition in commercial applications and in the overall sound design workflow, firmly grounded in the use of samples and event-based logics. Special emphasis is placed on physics-based sound synthesis methods and their potential for improved interactivity. The chapter starts with a discussion of the categories, functions, and affordances of sounds that we listen to and interact with in real and virtual environments. We then address perceptual and cognitive aspects, with the aim of emphasizing the relevance of sound source modeling with respect to the senses of presence and embodiment of a user in a virtual environment. Next, procedural approaches are presented and compared to sample-based approaches, in terms of models, methods, and computational costs. Finally, we analyze the state of the art in current uses of these approaches for Virtual Reality applications.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter sets out the ways in which sound studies can contribute to our thinking about place; listening to a place can help us to perceive it as an active and unstable agent, participating and constituting in the moment the action takes place. The environment around us affects the absorption, reverberation, and diffraction of sound; therefore, sound gives us an indication of the space it is in. Additionally, the activities that occur in a place – along with their associated sounds – cause the place to be given meaning. In other words, a place provides a stage for a specific practice, and is an intersection of happenings. We then discuss why sounds are impactful and important for our culture; sound offers us a possibility to explore and reveal new ways of knowing, and to gain new knowledge of how human and non-human agents relate to one another and their environment. The dominance of the eye in Western history is detailed, through to the modern rise of ‘auditory culture’ and ‘sound studies’. The chapter also outlines the intent to sketch some contours of what sonic materialism could be(come) and how it deviates from the conceptual frameworks which have dominated Western culture and discourses. The objective behind this is to create affective relationships to places, to explore various listening attitudes, and to give a voice to the less ear-catching sounds of everyday life. The development of sonic materialism is described as being a quest into how the sonic can contribute to and participate in current philosophical discourses, without being encapsulated beforehand in the written or spoken language typical of philosophy or theorizing. In other words, it involves thinking in and through the sonic, rather than thinking about it. The identity of sounds is discussed, as well as the movement involved in creating them.

Abstract:
AbstractThe field of academic integrity in higher education has made significant gains in exploring the proliferation of integrity issues, the frequency of student misconduct behaviours, and in identifying strategies for embedding academic integrity education more broadly into the curriculum. Regardless of calls for institution-wide approaches which focus on preventing academic misconduct, those of us engaged in the field can attest that there will always be a need to address academic misconduct behaviours and support the development of those students who engage in them. As student affairs practitioners in a Canadian post-secondary institution, we present our approach to creating meaningful teaching and learning experiences that enable students with misconduct violations to critically explore potential misconduct situations and practice the skills needed to make alternative decisions. Utilising existing work that frames academic integrity as ‘standards of practice’, this chapter demonstrates our application of key themes from the academic integrity literature within our teaching and learning practice. Recognizing that mandated academic integrity education can be a challenging learning experience, we discuss our approach to engaging these students in analyzing the common situational factors that post-secondary students face that pose potential academic integrity conflicts and the way ethical decision-making frameworks can support their ability to navigate academic integrity concerns in the future. We conclude the chapter with our key learnings and recommendations for implementing an engaging experience with students who are mandated to attend instruction following an academic integrity violation.

Abstract:
Abstract Despite the successful collection of thirteen life stories of working-class women of Greek background in their late sixties, who had migrated to Sweden in the 1970s, the two researchers who engaged in the study—Despina, herself a child of migrant Greek parents, and Diana, a political refugee from Argentina—were unable to publish the results. The aim of this chapter is to listen to women’s narratives by bringing into conversation the concept of social suffering through the use of a psychosocial approach. The aim is also to explore our inability (as migrants and daughters of migrants ourselves) to acknowledge what over-exploitation, gender and racial regimes can, and indeed do, to people regarding their sense of self and well-being. The chapter contains four sections. First, the text provides a short introduction to Swedish racial formation, followed by relevant efforts to conceptualise human pain, inspired by the work of Black British feminist scholars Gail Lewis and Yasmin Gunaratnam. Their theoretical intervention suggests the value of a synthesis of politicised psychoanalytic approaches to the dynamics of ‘race’ and emotional labor; providing a frame for a reflection of our own emotions, with special focus on shame and guilt. The central focus of the chapter is in the section ‘What (We Think) Hurts the Most’, which explores the stories collected organised through three topics—(failed) motherhood, broken bodies and (racist) respectability.

This chapter discusses corporate risk, enterprise risk management, and the board's responsibility for enterprise risk management. It considers risk identification, assessment, evaluation, and control and reviews risk management information systems. It also reviews the corporate risk that involves the gain or loss that might be incurred by an uncertain future event and a statistical concept of the probability of an event occurring and its possible effect. The chapter mentions AON, an international insurance group, which suggested that the global financial crisis had significantly increased board-level awareness of the need to manage and leverage risk. It cites corporate governance codes and stock exchanges' listing rules that require companies to report on their risk management procedures.

Abstract:
Google Ads is a powerful tool for companies wishing to gain visibility on Google searches, as it offers impression privileges for advertisers, by featuring the ad above the organic results listing. This chapter contributes to the optimization of Google Ads campaigns. It includes an empirical study with a sample of marketing professionals exploring their views on the challenges of Google Ads as a digital marketing tool. According to the participants in this study, Google Ads campaign profitability depends, largely, on the ability to choose a keyword pool that achieves the company's goals. Moreover, the complexity of these pay-per-click decisions, the costs involved, and its business implications demand more reasoned, quantified, and, if possible, optimized solutions. The chapter develops linear programming optimization models based on impressions, clicks, conversions, and billing. The models are tested on a real example using Excel optimization add-ins.

Abstract THERE is not much direct evidence of connections between Hume’s thought and that of Joseph Butler. We do know that Hume wanted to interest Butler in the Treatise of Human Nature at the time of its first publication, and took out material about miracles in order to assist in this.1 Although this attempt came to nothing, we also know that in 1742 Butler was recommending Hume’s Essays Moral and Political ‘everywhere’.2 There is no reason to doubt that Hume’s wish to gain Butler’s approbation was based in part on genuine respect; and he includes Butler’s name in the Introduction to the Treatise when listing those students of human nature whose work has pre ceded his own. The late Professor Mossner argued that Cleanthes in the Dialogues is intended to represent Butler,3 and it would certainly be unreasonable to doubt that Butler was much in his mind as that work was composed over the years.

Abstract:
Listening comprehension is a crucial skill in Foreign Language (FL) learning, yet many FL learners encounter challenges in this area, leading to frustration and discouragement. To address the issue, this pilot study investigated whether high-immersion Virtual Reality (VR) could effectively facilitate attentive listening tasks for FL learners. This quasi-experimental, within-subject pilot study involved ten learners of Chinese from an underserved, urban high school in the United States. Participants experienced an animated story in VR with and without captions, then completed pre- and post-tests to assess language gains and listening comprehension. A questionnaire measured participants' perceptions of VR and the use of captions. Results indicated that VR positively impacted language gains and listening comprehension, showing improvement with both groups of participants. Although the group without captions slightly outperformed the group with captions, this difference was not statistically significant. Novice learners reported challenges in comprehending the VR story, highlighting their need for appropriate scaffolding. Overall, the findings suggest that VR can be an effective tool for practicing listening comprehension for FL learners, but careful consideration of content complexity and scaffolding is crucial for learners at different proficiency levels. This study lays the groundwork for further research on VR-assisted language learning.

Abstract:
The act of sound perception and its subjective dimensions, from physical to psychoacoustics, from semantic to affective, carry an inherent challenge for the conception and evaluation of every audio-based artefact. Starting from a previous framework of evaluation approaches, we seek to deconstruct the confguring elements of these processes, searching for theoretical foundations informing Sound Design and possible applications for Auditory Displays. This work is a first step into identifying a body of knowledge on the listener’s experience, how the act of listening takes place and how the sequence of listening actions can evolve as forms of dialogue, creating dialogical spaces for making sense of auditory information. With this work, practitioners can gain new insights into how existing techniques for creating auditory artefacts can be confgured and transformed into new, alternative approaches.

Abstract:
When teaching English for Graphic Engineering and Design at the tertiary level, it is important to train students to follow professional lectures and presentations and grasp this speech genre. English language classes could be organised to develop this significant skill through systematic training, which includes both the preparation phase, crucial for the activity's success, and the active listening phase. Competence differentiates each phase by adopting and mastering specific strategies. The most crucial method involves anticipating the presentation's topic and key terms, while the next step involves listening to the presentation. The process includes the following steps: a. anticipating the content; b. separating relevant from irrelevant data; c. tolerating ambiguity in the listening data; d. mentally summarising the presented data; e. drawing conclusions about unknown facts based on context; and f. elaborating and connecting previous knowledge with new information. With competent instruction from the teacher and his guidance through the entire process of acquiring and mastering the skills of understanding lectures and presentations in English for Graphic Engineering and Design, the listed strategies can help students gain competence in this field of specific professional knowledge and advance their professional and academic careers.

Abstract:
Peer evaluation being an active type of learning develops learners’ interactivity, speaking, listening, critical thinking abilities. Unlike the passive learning, in active learning students are more engaged in the evaluation process of presentation made by their peers, which significantly encourages student participation. Applying Classroom Response System students gain the ability to instantly respond and react, since this activity requires continuous attention. Promoting student-instructor interaction this technique leads to the involvement of students to class discussion simultaneously providing information about efficacy of the comprehension of the new topic. A significant point to be taken into consideration is the individual approach to every student.

Abstract:
Children are often underserved because of their age, academic level, and accessibility to the processes in place to develop resources, research and policies. Being neurodivergent, or living in a neurodivergent home, can augment childhood challenges. Listening to dyslexic people, including children, offers an opportunity to respectfully visit unique dyslexic lived experiences, to explore these rich contributions, and to gain fresh insights into people’s journeys. I am a dyslexic parent of a dyslexic child, and an advocate for the wider dyslexic community. I have personally found it can be challenging to articulate how dyslexia is experienced, irrespective of age, because of the difficulties dyslexic people have with expressing themselves (Lithari, 2021). This essay describes how one ten-year-old child chose to highlight dyslexia in their own words, by creating an A4 poster. Starting by looking at what is being created in thedyslexic space in Aotearoa New Zealand, the essay then discusses dyslexic lived experiences. The essay continues with a reflection on the importance of children’s ideas – for example in planning projects and neighbourhood destinations – followed by comments on how the “eggshell of people” analogy might be used by educators to open up discussions about dyslexia and encourage inclusive, and safe, learning environments. It concludes with discussion points for further thought.

Abstract:
Students learn English with certain motives. Many students seek to improve their careers, others seek to gain confidence, and others plan to live abroad. Thus, the problematic question arises: how do English language skills and learning needs of secondary school students relate to each other? The research aim is to designate the relationship between English language skills and learning needs of secondary school students. The methods of descriptive statistics were used. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was applied. Mostly the medium correlation and a weak correlation were dominated between English language skills and learning needs. The analysis disclosed that students give more priority to receptive skills ‒ reading and listening than to communicative - speaking and writing skills.

Abstract:
For the current diagnosis of Alzheimer’s dementia (AD), physicians and neuroscientists primarily call upon visual and statistical analysismethodsoflarge,multi-dimensionalpositronemissiontomography (PET) brain scan data sets. As these data sets are complex in nature, the assessment of disease severity proves challenging, and is susceptible to cognitive and perceptual errors causing intra and inter-reader variability among doctors. The Triple-Tone Sonification method, first presented and evaluated by Roginska et al., invites an audible element to the diagnosis process, offering doctors another tool to gain certainly and clarification of disease stages. Audible beating patterns resulting from three interacting frequencies extracted from PET brain scan data, the Triple-Tone method underwent a second round of subjective listening test and evaluation, this time on radiologists from NYU Langone Medical Center. Results show the method is effective at evaluation PET scanbraindata.

Abstract:
It is said, to succeed in business, put the interest of customers ahead of your own. This is great advice to businesses, racing to deploy video calls to provide COVID-safe meetings and/or benefit from general conveniences and gain productivity. If 55% of the communication is truly nonverbal as suggested by Prof. Albert Mehrabian from University of California in Los Angeles, putting the interest of the customer ahead means listening carefully to the nonverbal channels. In video calls, one must try hardest to read, understand and manage the customer interest expressed in the video images. In this study, our primary objective was to analyse and evaluate the practicality of a project to develop a machine-learning model that can predict and quantify a level of interest of a video caller from his facial images. As such, our secondary objective was to explore facial and behavioural expressions, highly correlated to or triggered by interests that are confirmed by imaged human subjects themselves, as well as explore areas and methods to capture them as to generate machine-learning training data. The result suggested the project to develop a machine-learning model would be practical. The finding included that a model based on static facial features visible in a video frame could be possible, but a model based on moving facial features estimated from sequence of consecutive video frames could do better, especially those with acute focus on eye movements.

Abstract:
The green transition involves different economic, social and territorial impacts that have been explored in the four year research project “Not Just a Green Transition – Examining the path towards a socially just green transition in the Nordic Region” (short name: NJUST). The result is the Nordic Toolbox for a Just Green Transition, which contributes to a transition towards a climate neutral Nordic Region that is socially just. The comprehensive and interactive toolbox offers guidance for Nordic policymakers to navigate challenges, listen to those affected, and get inspired. The toolbox highlights six priority areas for enabling a just green transition, and offers policy memos from four socially at-risk groups: older adults, youth, people with disabilities and those at risk of unemployment. Through practical tools and examples, a structured checklist, policymakers can gain insights into how to take action for a transition that is not only green – but equitable too.

Abstract:
The Informal STEM Learning (ISL) project1 research team from the STEM Research Center at Oregon State University, in collaboration with project partners, conducted a baseline survey with members of the informal STEM learning community. The main goals of the ISL Baseline Survey were to 1. Understand the current lived experiences of ISL professionals and determine factors around professional learning that might enhance belonging to institutions and the field of ISL, and success individual’s careers in ISL; and 2. Gain insights into current awareness and knowledge of the Framework and perceived needs in the community to make the Framework useful and usable for a variety of purposes. Findings from the baseline survey complement data from listening sessions and transference panels. Collectively, the project team can use baseline survey findings to inform the development of resources for the Framework, including how to best socialize the Framework into the ISL community. The survey was based on a similar survey to the ISL community conducted by the Center for the Advancement of Informal STEM Learning (CAISE), further co-developed by all project partners, and disseminated from contact lists from the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC). 732 respondents started the survey, and 630 completed at least one scale of survey items. This summary shares high-level findings from our initial analysis of the survey data of those 630 respondents to the survey.
