LeMay, Michael C. Religious Freedom in America. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216007302.

Abstract:
This book provides the answers to controversial questions about religious liberties in the United States and connected issues through balanced, thorough, and nonjudgmental coverage of the issues in a reference format. The subject of religious freedom is important to all American citizens, regardless of religious affiliation or ethnicity. Are the rights of religious individuals being eroded, or is religion being unfairly used to deny basic secular rights to individuals? How will religious institutions adapt to changes in legislation that have an impact on how they operate? Does the Supreme Court have the right to enforce these changes? Finally, how can the precarious separation of church and state be maintained while simultaneously respecting both institutions? This single-volume work provides an introduction that addresses the historical background of religious freedom in America, accurately explains the latest legal developments in religious freedom in the United States, and presents an unbiased account of the probable impact of the new Freedom of Religion laws in the continuing culture war. Readers will gain insight into key controversies such as prayer in public schools, creationism versus evolution, abortion, religious objections to medical care, religious displays in public places, same-sex marriage and LGBT rights, and state and federal religious freedom acts. The book also includes perspective essays by outside contributors, a selection of useful primary documents, a listing of print and nonprint resources, a chronology, and a glossary of terms.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on a commitment that has been gaining force among practical theologians and Christian ethicists since the early 2000s. The commitment is that ethnographic fieldwork can be used to generate theological reflection and knowledge. The aim is to encourage a substantive shift, from a one-way engagement into an actual and generative dialogue between ethnographic theologians and anthropological ethnographers. The animating question is this: What does each dialogue partner—anthropology and theology—stand to gain from such an open exchange about ethnography? To address this question, the chapter argues that ethnographic theologians can work with a more diverse conception of ethnography while anthropological ethnographers can learn how theologians engage normativity in their work. It concludes by reflecting on genres of ethnographic writing as an opportunity for dialogue.

Full text
Abstract:
Students of pop music and pop culture as well as fans who have loved the music since it came into being will gain valuable insight into this genre of the 1970s and 1980s. Listen to New Wave Rock!: Exploring a Musical Genre contains background on new wave music in general, with an overview and history of new wave rock in particular. While the bulk of the book is devoted to analysis of 50 must-hear musical examples, which include artists, songs, and albums, the book also explores how this genre of the late 1970s and 1980s came into being, musical influences on the genre, and how the genre influenced later generations of artists. Additional chapters analyze the impact of new wave rock on American popular culture and the legacy of new wave music, including how the music is still used today in film and television soundtracks and in television commercials. The combination of detailed examination of specific artists, songs, and albums and discussion of background, legacy, and impact distinguish this book from others on the subject and make it a vital reference and interesting read for both students and music aficionados.

Abstract:
Does listening to other people—or reading what they have written—supply us with knowledge in a unique or distinctive way? Do we need special reasons to trust people in order to gain knowledge from them? Some philosophers argue that testimony never actually provides knowledge. At the other extreme, some philosophers argue that testimony provides knowledge, and in a distinctive way. In this view, testimony is a special channel for receiving knowledge, a channel with the same basic status as sensory perception and reasoning. ‘Testimony’ explores both extremes, as well as the middle ground of reductionism, to identify the factors that matter most to how we absorb what people say.

Hoff, Timothy J. Doctor-Patient Relationships and Our Expectations. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190626341.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite strong evidence over time of the clinical, psychological, and emotional benefits of strong doctor-patient relationships, these relationships are transforming quickly due to a “new normal” within health care delivery of de-emphasizing patient contact with the physician; using disruptive innovations that emphasize transactional speed and convenience in service delivery; and pressures exerted by external forces like the overuse of performance metrics. Strong doctor-patient relationships are characterized by dyadic interactions over time that feature high degrees of trust, empathy, listening, and emotional support. As the notion of “relationship” in health care moves from doctor-patient to organization-patient, it is important to gain insights about the present and future of relational care through the voices of doctors and patients describing their interactional experiences, and how these experiences shape their thinking and behavior with respect to each other.

Abstract:
This book presents a collection of short, stimulating essays that explore how we experience art and what it means to be an “observer.” Ranging far and wide, from Pina Bausch to RoboCop, from Bob Dylan to Vermeer, it uses encounters with specific artworks to gain entry into a world of fascinating issues—like how philosophy and science are represented in film; what evolutionary biology says about art; or the role of ethics, fakes, and copies in our experience of a work. Each essay arises out of an art encounter—in a museum, listening to records, or going to a concert. Carefully articulating the experience of each of these encounters, the book proposes that, like philosophy, art is a sort of technology for understanding ourselves. Put simply, art is an opportunity for us to enact ourselves anew.

Abstract:
Both liturgically and architecturally, sermons were central to Dissenting life. Listening to the Word was at the heart of Dissenting worship and pulpits were frequently in prominent positions within the meeting house. While printed sermons have, understandably, been the focus of much work in this area, manuscript sermons also offer important insights into how sermons were used, the occasions on which they were delivered, and the reactions of their auditors. While many Dissenting sermons were devoted to themes in practical divinity—how to lead a good life (or die a good death)—they could also enable Dissenters to demonstrate their loyalty to the state or to engage in philanthropic activity. Unlike their Anglican counterparts, Dissenters were more inclined to give extemporary sermons but sermon notes allow historians to gain some insights into how the majority of sermons, which were not printed, might have been received.

Abstract:
Abstract This book invites all interested in cultivating a higher level of group artistry to gain a deeper understanding of working productively and joyfully within a musical ensemble. The concepts and techniques in this book help artists develop a vocabulary and tools to refine their music making process and learn how to work well as a team. It offers a systematic approach to individual preparation for rehearsal, score study, planning and implementing a constructive and effective rehearsal, and the interpretive process. The authors address tension and conflict within groups, including strategies for working well together and creating a healthy environment for rehearsals and performances. Approaches for researching and discovering the context, character, and meaning of musical works, as well as collaborating with living composers are highlighted. The final chapters include practical techniques, organized by their intended purpose for everyday use in rehearsals and teaching. Based on forty years of rehearsing, performing, and teaching by the Cavani Quartet, these techniques are designed to give each ensemble member an equal voice in the interpretive process while solving technical issues. Detailed explanations of the rehearsal techniques and guidance for chamber music students and teachers are illustrated with photos, diagrams, and score examples. Topics include cueing and breathing, rhythmic alignment and ensemble, intonation, sound production, projecting expression, strategic listening, and balance. The final chapter includes a capstone technique called LBAD (Live, Breathe, and Die) that heightens the connection between ensemble members through nonverbal communication. Video demonstrations of selected techniques are included on the companion website.

Jacobs, Brittany R. Transforming Your Library into a Learning Playground. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216027171.

Abstract:
Public libraries must offer relevant, exciting, and stimulating learning centers that appeal to kids. This book is a step-by-step guide for creating affordable and effective educational programs for children and youth by focusing on one simple concept: play. With the standards of education rising every year and current technology making all types of information widely available to anyone with an Internet connection, libraries need to stay relevant by constantly evolving. One important way to strengthen a public library's identity as an irreplaceable resource is to make it an exciting and stimulating learning center that appeals to children and youth. This book demonstrates how to transform the informal setting of a public library into a place where "play" in the guise of game-based learning becomes a natural and exciting process for children and young students. It also shows readers how to incorporate existing programs such as the makerspace, storytime, and book clubs to play to their strengths; more effectively utilize the tools and resources they have; and transform their libraries. The first two chapters explain why learning through play and exploration isn't only for early childhood development, identifies the key differences between free play and structured play, and addresses why libraries are the perfect setting for learning. Next, the author draws on her experience in children's librarianship and as a children's book author to describe methods to listen to (and understand) children, manage organized chaos, and gain the children's trust. Additional chapters explain how to write weekly or daily lesson plans, how to brainstorm supporting activities to reinforce concepts being taught, and how to infuse STEM and literacy objectives into daily lessons. The book closes with suggestions on marketing and promotion, ways to support the classroom, and strategies that will "keep ‘em coming back" and build an enthusiastic customer base. • Provides a step-by-step guide on how to write programming, from daily lesson plans to an overarching storyline • Teaches readers how to uncover the educational content in everyday activities, seamlessly join the maker movement, and infuse STEM and literacy-based concepts into lesson plans • Explains how to market, promote, and execute programming that is educational, engaging, and fun and will gain your public library repeat visitors as a result • Identifies practical ways to use available resources and implement quality programming on a budget

Abstract:
In the concluding chapter, it is proposed that while dialogue, music, poetry, and storytelling—collectively the lifeblood of this work—should by no means be regarded as substitutes for progressive public policy or impactful legislation in the ongoing struggle for autistic rights, they are nevertheless valuable in their own right and can pave the way toward new policies and laws that make a real, positive difference. Conversation, in particular, is singled out for its capacity to help us “find common ground from which to move forward in common purpose toward the common good” while distancing us from “the tragic patterns of divisiveness, prejudice, intolerance, and denial of the humanity of others that darken the record of human history at every turn.” For conversation to foster such gains, however, our discourses must be approached with a commitment to really listening to what other people have to say. The greatest hope that the author and his collaborators have for this book, it is stated, is that its conversations and stories will ultimately “contribute in some meaningful way to making a future world that not only accepts neurodiversity but celebrates it as a hallmark of our shared humanity.” The work concludes with, first, a quotation from Hans Asperger emphasizing the importance of deeply engaged, compassionate conversation in his work with autistic children and, second, a closing poem from Mara Chasar, who suggests that however grave the challenges faced by autistic people may be, to be accepted, inspired, and loved by others will go a long way toward meeting them.
