Scudder, Mary F. Beyond Empathy and Inclusion. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197535455.001.0001.

Abstract:
Beyond Empathy and Inclusion: The Challenge of Listening in Democratic Deliberation considers how to improve democracy under the politically divided conditions we currently face. The book argues that while democracy does not require that citizens reach an agreement, it does require that they listen to one another. The book goes on to offer a systematic theory of listening acts to explain the democratic force of listening. Modeled after speech act theory, Scudder’s listening act theory shows how we do something in listening, independent of the outcomes of listening. In listening to our fellow citizens, we recognize their moral equality of voice. Being heard by our fellow citizens is what ensures we have a say in the laws to which we are held. The book offers a realistic view of listening, one that does not assume it will always produce empathy or even understanding. Listening is not the answer to all of our problems. In fact, listening can even produce certain undemocratic effects. The book argues that despite these challenges and risks, listening is a key responsibility of democratic citizenship. It also tackles questions regarding the limits of toleration in a democratic society. Do we owe listening even to democracy’s enemies? The book shows how listening can be used defensively, to protect against threats to democracy. The democratic listening this book prescribes is admittedly hard, especially in pluralistic societies. This volume investigates how to motivate citizens to listen seriously, attentively, and humbly even to those with whom they disagree.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 discusses the challenges presented by the historical data used in the study and how they are dealt with in the book: (a) the evidence, particularly for Old English, is limited and does not represent the genres and registers normally used in motion-encoding typology studies; (b) establishing the decontextualized meaning of verbs from earlier stages of a language can be problematic, including in view of the highly detailed entries in period dictionaries, which aim at listing all the contextualized meanings of a verb. Exemplary analyses illustrate how this problem is approached in the present study in comparison to previous works.

Järviluoma, Helmi, and Noora Vikman. On Soundscape Methods and Audiovisual Sensibility. Edited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199733866.013.019.

Abstract:
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. Soundscape concepts have been employed for more than 20 years to enrich audiovisual studies. They have also been debated extensively. This chapter addresses soundscape as shifting, processual, historical, and produced in contingent situations. It focuses on a specific aspect of methodology that is useful for considering how to advance research on the audiovisual: methods in motion. Soundscape studies have stressed that researchers sometimes need to leave the “laboratory” and venture into fieldwork. Some of the recent developments in the “marriage” of soundscape and audiovisual studies are described, with three goals: (1) to direct attention to soundscape studies as the art and scholarly study of listening, (2) to introduce the sensory memory walk, and (3) to introduce the listening walk. Sound studies are increasingly employed as a basis for developing multisensory methodologies of studying times, spaces, and materialities to relocate sensate users of space at the center of the researcher’s attention.

Trevarthen, Colwyn. What young children give to our learning. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198747109.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Studies of the cleverness of young children reveal that education, or schooling, is a cultivation of inherent motives of human pleasure in cooperative and creative life. An experienced teacher in a kindergarten, or a supervisor of doctoral students at university, supports affectionate and curious pupils who are ready to learn new stories of knowing and doing. François Rabelais, a sixteenth-century humanist, and Paulo Freire in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, have rejected ‘the absurd idea of pouring in knowledge’. Educators who act like a loving parent to help the child learn in playful and musical or poetic companionship are guiding the strengths of human nature. Officials appointed to administer education for the government of society need to understand that it is the human mind's convivial enthusiasm that inspires a lifetime of learning with many teachers. They need to listen to parents, to experienced teachers, and to children.
