Abstract:
AbstractLiver transplantation provides a curative treatment option for patients with both acute and chronic liver disease, but the decision to list a patient for transplant should be an informed one to maximize post-transplantation benefit and survivability. Potential candidates meeting transplantation indications must undergo a comprehensive evaluation consisting of both physical, as well as psychiatric, assessment to be considered for transplantation. Once listed, a candidate's place on the liver transplant waiting list is determined predominantly by his or her Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD)-Na score, which is a reliable tool to stratify short-term survival risk. The severity of certain conditions, however, is not accurately reflected by the MELD-Na score, and these particular diagnoses may be assigned MELD exception points. Herein, we discuss common indications for liver transplantation: the MELD system and its exceptions, the physical and psychosocial evaluation of potential transplant candidates, and some limitations of the current organ allocation system and efforts to reduce disparity in organ distribution.

Abstract:
The question as to whom should the authority to determine listing and delisting of species, populations, ecological communities and key threatening processes that affects the state's wildlife (flora and fauna) be delegated, for what purpose and what priority we should place them in relation to all of society's needs, is a fundamental and an important one. The authority for setting up the Scientific Committee of the Threatened Species Conservation Act (New South Wales) 1995 is examined. Its functions and the individuals that make up this Committee, who they represent and the determinations this Committee has reached so far are discussed. The implications for the listing of species, populations and ecological communities with some of the more serious problems such listings have caused are outlined with particular reference to the application of the 8-Point Test under s 5A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. These practical difficulties aside, the fundamental question still remains; Can the New South Wales State Parliament delegate its legislative powers for peace, welfare and good government, to a lower authority that is not directly elected by the people, accountable to no one and that has no propriety interest in the subject matter? Thus a question of Constitutional validity of all or part of the TSC Act arises.

Abstract:
The design of product listing pages is a key component of Website design because it has significant influence on the sales volume on a Website. This study focuses on product placement in designing product listing pages. Product placement concerns how venders of online stores place their products over the product listing pages for maximization of profit. This problem is very similar to the offline shelf management problem. Since product information sources on a Web page are typically communicated through the text and image, visual stimuli such as color, shape, size, and spatial arrangement often have an effect on the visual attention of online shoppers and, in turn, influence their eventual purchase decisions. In view of the above, this study synthesizes the visual attention literature and theory of shelf-space allocation to develop a mathematical programming model with genetic algorithms for finding optimal solutions to the focused issue. The validity of the model is illustrated with example problems.

Abstract:
How corporate governance mechanisms function in transition economies is a key topic for corporate governance researchers and policy makers. We propose that alternative governance mechanisms are in place to mitigate corporate fraudulent behaviors in the fluid state of transition economies where the establishment and enforcement of corporate governance legislation are presently insufficient. Drawing on the twin set of institutional logics—the institutional embeddedness logic and the institutional substitution logic—we posit that three salient types of prevailing alternative governance mechanisms (relational, administrative, and foreign governance) play important roles in transition economies because they are complementary to the institutional conditions at the time of the transition process. Conducting a bivariate probit analysis of a matched sample of corporate financial fraud cases in China, we find that strategic alliances, business group affiliation, nontradable state shares, local government ownership, use of foreign auditors, and foreign listing can deter corporate financial fraud, while foreign listing is also effective in detecting fraud. We also find that the deterrence effects of strategic alliances and business group affiliation become weaker as law development improves, while foreign listing and legal governance are completely substitutive. Our study provides a contextualized view of corporate governance that connects its effectiveness with institutionalization and the institutional state of a country. Our study also enriches our understanding of some unfamiliar forms of governance mechanisms that are in place and complementary to a country’s institutional conditions.

Abstract:
AbstractThis communication presents the situation regarding astronomical and archaeoastronomical heritage related to the World Heritage Convention through recent years up until today. Some parallel events and works were promoted strongly within the IAU–UNESCO Initiative during the International Year of Astronomy (2009). This was followed by a joint program by the IAU and ICOMOS—an official advisory body assisting the World Heritage Committee in the evaluation of nomination dossiers. The result of that work is an important publication by around 40 authors from 20 different countries all around the world: Heritage Sites of Astronomy and Archaeoastronomy in the Context of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention (Ruggles & Cotte 2010). A second volume is under preparation (2015). It was also accompanied by some initiatives such as the “Windows to the Universe" organisation and the parallel constitution of local “Starlight Reserves”. Some regional meetings studying specific facets or regional heritage in the field giving significant knowledge progresses also accompanied the global trend for astronomical heritage.WH assessment is defined by a relatively strict format and methodology. A key phrase is “demonstration of Outstanding Universal Value” to justify the WH Listing by the Committee. This communication first examines the requirements and evaluation practices about of demonstrating OUV for a given place in the context of astronomical or archaeoastronomical heritage. That means the examination of the tangible attributes, an inventory of the property in terms of immoveable and moveable components and an inventory of intangible issues related to the history (history of the place in the context of the history of astronomy and cultural history). This is also related to the application to the site of the concept of integrity and authenticity, as regards the place itself and in comparison with other similar places (WH sites already listed, sites on national WH Tentative Lists, or other similar places in the region). The second issue of the communication is to give a glimpse of today's WH List, including some difficulties with listing and occasional failures, and trends and promising approaches.

Subject. The article examines the foreign experience of global trading platforms related to alternative ways of listing company shares on stock exchanges. Objectives. I study the feasibility of adapting other methods of placing shares on Russian stock exchanges in order to develop the national financial market and increase the number of traded shares. Methods. The study is based on general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, comparative and comparative analysis, graphical method of analysis. Results. As a result of the analysis of international experience and innovative methods of listing, it was determined that there are legal obstacles that currently limit the possibility of using new methods of listing shares in the Russian market. At the same time, there is a demand from small and medium-sized businesses, as well as large Russian non-public companies, for simpler and less expensive ways to enter the equity capital market. Conclusions. The emergence of additional ways for companies to enter the stock exchange opens up more diversified and less expensive ways for issuers to place their shares, as well as expands the investor base and the overall attractiveness of the Russian financial market.

Abstract:
The second edition of the Bliss Classification (BC2) is a faceted classification scheme which reworks the original Bliss Classification, devised a century ago. It compares favourably in terms of its wealth of detail, the fineness of its analysis, its flexibility and the conciseness of its notation with its main rivals, the Library of Congress Classification, the Dewey Decimal Classification and the Universal Decimal Classification. The Art class, W, is one of the most detailed and best organised of the BC2 schedules, with the caveat that the author did not find the giving of priority to place over period and the listing of individual artists separately from their periods and places to be the most helpful arrangement. However, room is left for alternative arrangements within the scheme.

Abstract:
Since minutes were never taken of the Inklings’ meetings, it is not surprising that there is no complete, definitive record of when meetings occurred nor of who attended. To partly remedy this deficit, this essay offers a comprehensive chronological listing of their meetings from 1933 to 1954. Distinctions are drawn between documented meetings (where references occur about the meeting in a letter, journal, or other source) and possible meetings (where it is arguable that a meeting took place). In addition, for documented meetings, the essay identifies those present, where and when the gathering took place, and the specific source that supports the claim that the meeting occurred. The essay concludes with three brief observations about this chronology.

Abstract:
There are several previous studies that examine switches between marketplaces and how these changes impact companies share performance. The most foregoing research made on the subject share performance is based on the US stock market. Swedish studies made to the subject examine the share performance when companies move from one of the SwedishMultilateral Trading Facilities (MTF) to main market. The authors of this paper have noted that there is a gap of knowledge regarding share performance when companies move between the Multilateral Trading Facilities. By only examining the Swedish Multilateral Trading Facilities, AktieTorget, First North and Nordic MTF, and how moving between the lists affects the share performance, this study is an addition to the previous research in the field. This study examines 39 Swedish companies, which have changed list between 2007-2016. OMXSPI is the benchmark used in this study to compare the companies return with the market return. The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a value for both the companies and its shareholders to exchange marketplaces between the Swedish Multilateral Trading Facilities, AktieTorget, First North and Nordic MTF. This purpose is achieved byexamine the company’s stock price development before and after the change of market place and identify if the change creates a negative share performance. This study is conducted in the form of a quantitative event study where the marketplace change represents the event. The purpose is not to analyze the individual companies but to provide a comprehensive picture ofthe effect the marketplace changes have on the stock price development. The result of the study indicates that a negative accumulated abnormal return (CAR) occurs after the marketplace change. When calculating the parameters in the market model the study finds that the average accumulated abnormal return (CAAR) for all companies is a total of -47,88 % twelve months after the marketplace change.

Dearn, Lucy K. "Music, people and place : entering and negotiating listening communities." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/17165/.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the field of audience studies it has been acknowledged that audience experience is altered by the presence of other listeners (Pitts 2005) and this can form audience communities (Pitts & Spencer 2008; Benzecry 2009, 2011). However, the notion of audience community is not fully accepted, with Phillip Auslander suggesting live audiences partake in no more than ‘common consumption’ (2008: 64). Previous authors have called for more understanding of classical music communities and how effectively a newcomer may integrate with them (Pitts & Spencer 2008: 237). Currently, there has been little research investigating the nature of listening communities formed around a concert series and particularly from its origins in a new venue. Through the findings of two case studies, this thesis explores the formation of a community within a concert audience at new venue in Doncaster and investigates the experiences of attenders under the age of 25, underrepresented in the regular makeup of classical music audiences in Sheffield. These two case studies build up an understanding of the different perspectives and needs of regular and new audiences for live chamber music. Also investigated through both case studies are the relationships between audience member and performance space. Moreover, the thesis considers how cultural buildings, in this case concert halls, may influence the way in which people feel about the place they live. Central to all the research questions in this thesis is an interrogation of the current methodological toolkit used to understand audience experience, and the research includes a trial of new visual methodologies that aim to increase understanding of both regular and new audiences’ experiences. The core audience for classical music concert series show their support by being loyal to the arts organisation that provides the series, to the resident musicians and by showing knowledge of the art form and of the concert culture at a particular venue (Pitts & Spencer 2008). In my first case study, I am interested in placing the ‘aficionados’ of such an audience community into a populist sphere by analysing their behaviours in line with popular culture and viewing them as ‘fans’. By understanding classical music audiences in this way, comparisons can be made with other musical communities in popular culture, which becomes particularly interesting when considering people that are choosing not to associate with this community. The critical lens of popular fan culture is used in this thesis to explore the inner workings of a classical music listening community and the fan-like behaviours the aficionados often perform. Conversely, by understanding a classical music audience as a working ‘listening community’, I question what impact their ‘fan’ behaviours may have for those demographic groups that are underrepresented in the regular audience. For my second case study, the particular group chosen is younger people under the age of 25 (referred to as U25s), who are typically far away from this culture in their musical tastes and experiences but who often have a strong musical identity themselves. Through arts-informed research methods, this case study investigates the views of U25s who have differing levels of musical and cultural knowledge but do not regularly attend classical concerts. I am interested in the perceptions these U25s have about classical music concert culture and the pre-existing community of listeners and when exposed to the culture of classical concert going, how well they can integrate. With increasing cuts to funding in the arts it is possible that arts organisations will become more reliant upon private donations and the financial security of its core ‘fan’ base, so a greater understanding of these people and their relationship with concert culture is important. In contrast, with a large demographic group currently absent from regular audiences, it is also necessary to consider how the relevance of classical music may be grown for younger people and the live presentation of this art form preserved. In order to most accurately answer both of these audience development questions, the best possible understanding of audience experience is necessary through the application of new methods to this enquiry.

Jefferson, Ben Thomas. "'If I listen, I can hear' : Derek Walcott and place." Thesis, University of Essex, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.559261.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines place in the poetry of Derek Walcott. Through the close reading of a number of key topoi in Walcott's poetry, this thesis investigates the meanings that Walcott associates with different places. Threaded through these investigations, and forming the main argument, this thesis asserts that Walcott privileges place over space. Walcott rejects 'space' as an invention and abstract 'design' associated with colonial dominion and with neocolonial practices. For Walcott, space, as an abstraction, disavows local experience. Because of this, privileging space knowingly or unknowingly attempts to rid marginalised or oppressed people of their agency. In his poetry, Walcott consistently emphasises embodied ways of knowing, and draws upon human experience as an appropriate, and often counterhegemonic, form of knowledge. Walcott has consistently shown that one person's space is in fact another person's place, and suggests that, because of this, space is imagined over place. Drawing on the works of Edward Casey and phenomenology, this thesis argues that the idea that place precedes space goes against many academic discourses that assume the contrary. Walcott consistently draws his reader's attention to plant and animal life in association with place, and in doing so counteracts anthropocentric definitions of place. Reading Derek Walcott's poetry with an emphasis on place and experiential or a posteriori knowledge creates room for new critical readings of Walcott's work. Specifically, emphasis on place helps to contextualise Walcott's emphasis on the Caribbean as 'nothing' and of the Caribbean people's Adamic relationship with the landscape. This thesis argues that Walcott's notion of place is inherently political: most obviously, the poet's ideas concerning place form part of his arsenal in the very real fight against the multinational hotel/tourist industry's incursion on, and appropriation of, Caribbean sites. This thesis shows that Walcott's project of investing uninhabited landscapes with a sense of place, and blurring the delineations between privileged sites such as churches and "open space/' Walcott challenges the forces that operate within the Caribbean as a consumable, commodified space.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores negotiations of belonging among unaccompanied young refugees in Sweden. The thesis further aims to shed light on methodological aspects of bringing out their voices. The analysis draws on postcolonial and poststructuralist approaches to belonging and relates belonging to the concepts of home, place, racialization and notions of “Swedishness”. The thesis analyses qualitative interviews with 17 young people, who arrived in Sweden as unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors and have been granted permanent residency. The interviews are complemented with walk-alongs and photography-based interviews. Paper 1 gives an overview and discussion of research on unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors. I argue that there is a lack of their voices in the research, and that their own agency and perspectives are not addressed due to a focus on vulnerability and emotional health (or lack thereof). Paper II, which is delimited to participants in a rural village, shows that they negotiate belonging and a sense of home related to places but that othering is constraining. In paper II and III I suggest that the participants’ belongings and position in Sweden can be understood as conditional due to othering and racialization. In paper III, I argue that expressing gratitude can be understood as a form of impression management and, thus be a strategy to negotiate their position in the interview setting as in the host country. I finally argue that in order to understand the participants’ negotiations of belonging attention has to be paid to their agency as well as the conditioning of belonging in discourses and in interactions on the local level.

Abstract:
With a series of dance solos called Lugs, I have been exploring notions of emotional and physical displacement through the telling of personal stories, mine and others. This thesis explores concepts and theories, which brings an articulation to my practice as artist, researcher and teacher. With A/r/tography and Performative Inquiry as foundational methodologies utilizing transmediation techniques; specifically image, text, and spoken work to embodiment. Through a variety of performance theories, I probe the moments in my improvised performances where the immediacy and integrity of my decision making process works in direct relation to the audience, the story, the performance artefacts and the context. In this investigation I explore further notions of Appelbaum's (1995) Stop and Fels' (1998) Space Moments of learning where an absolute astuteness and availability to the moment allows for possibilities of change. The thesis recalls many Lug performances, artist residencies and a conference presentation; these reflections are woven between theorists such as Bhaktin, Butler, Bhabha, Irwin, Fels and practitioners, Babar and Brecht. Through two simple charts, one created at the beginning of my research period and one at the end, the thesis illuminates an important shift in the problemetizing of my practice addressing the importance of the hermeneutic reading of my practice and emphasising that the articulation gained in my methods and theories allows for a greater commitment to being present to the unknown variables I invite into my work which generate from this liminal and space of inquiry. This study has presented a comprehensive overview of the properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places from Pennsylvania and Indiana. The project systematically examines what types of properties are listed on the National Register from each state. The evidence, which was compiled into an electronic database, suggests that property listings did not follow larger social trends. However, the evidence did show that certain events, such as federal legislation and federal tax credits, led to a larger number of properties to be listed at certain times. The research also proved that the State Historic Preservation Offices of Pennsylvania and Indiana have many similarities in the way properties are nominated.<br>Department of Architecture

Collins, Reiko Goto. "Ecology and environmental art in public place : talking tree : won't you take a minute and listen to the plight of nature?" Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/788.

Full text
Abstract:
My research started with a question: Is it possible to create change if we understand life is interdependent and interrelated with nature in our environment? I researched this question from the perspective of a practising artist in the field of environmental art in the context of ecology. I chose trees as the focal point of my enquiry as trees represent the largest living thing we encounter in our day-to-day activities. Empathy, particularly as defined in the work of Edith Stein, emerged as a significant critical construct which I used to examine the inter-dependence and interrelation of humans and trees as dynamic and diverse communities on earth. Empathy is related to metaphor, particularly Donald Schön’s idea of a generative metaphor and George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s 'empathic projection'. These metaphorical conceptions can be relied upon to talk about trees without falling into anthropomorphising nature. The research was also informed by positions in the aesthetics of art. First Emily Brady positions human imagination as aesthetic mediation between human perceptions and scientific understanding of nature. Secondly Grant Kester’s dialogical aesthetics that are informed by conversation, inter-subjective exchange and empathic relationship. I then sought to understand how empathy had been embedded in practices of art over the last thirty years. Particular artworks are selected because they are internationally relevant examples of work that intended to create change in a specific public sphere: Time Landscape (1978) by Alan Sonfist, 7000 Oaks (1982) by Joseph Beuys and Serpentine Lattice (1993) by Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison. My interest in these works is focused on the potential for an empathic relationship with trees as living things that are embedded in specific environments. To meet this goal in my aesthetic practice, I have developed a discrete relational artwork in collaboration with a plant physiologist, a computer programmer and other artists to create the means to experience how trees ‘breathe’. This is accomplished by translating the plant physiological processes - photosynthesis and transpiration - to sound using, and extending, a custom software system. I also invented Plein Air, an easel that not only holds the plant's physiological system and the sound system but also becomes a small portable station to observe various trees in different places. In my conclusion I examined the implication of ecological and symbolic meanings that go beyond an artist’s authorship, which is created through this empathydriven enquiry and shared experience between people, place and trees in public places.

"An empirical study of the teaching and learning of speaking and listening skills in relation to work place needs with reference to the National Curriculum, in some secondary schools in the County of Humberside." Thesis, University of Hull, 2001. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:11171.

Abstract:
One broad question addressed in this research is "What are the links between the learning of speaking and listening skills in secondary school, and the future use of speaking and listening in the work place?" To facilitate the answer to the above question, this study also seek to answer the following question: "What is the present situation in teaching and learning speaking and listening skills in secondary school after the introduction of the National Curriculum in 1989?" In order to answer the above questions this research adopted a multi-method approach known as triangulation technique. The techniques used were interviews, observations and questionnaire. The sample consisted of 1105 Year 11 students, 14 heads of English Department, 5 English teachers, 1 moderator, 2 careers officers and 2 employers. The data was analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings show that there is no explicit link between the learning of Speaking and Listening in Humberside secondary schools, and future use of Speaking and Listening in the work place. Whatever links the school has with work places are more for the students' future plans: further education or employment; the duration for work experience is too short and the development of Speaking and Listening at work place is not one of its purposes. It was found that The HoDs and the teachers based their teaching on English in the National Curriculum. It was observed that some activities were set up by teachers but little teaching of Speaking and Listening was based on them. The opportunity for the students to be involved actively in Speaking and Listening activities was limited and there was minimal use of technology to promote Speaking and Listening. Speaking and Listening were used as tools to achieve other learning, especially literature and writing. The teacher still dominated the class and reading and writing still dominated the integration of skills. Listening has been badly neglected. Based on the two answers it can be deduced that at the secondary school level in the County of Humberside, even after the introduction of the National Curriculum, there is no planned link between schools' teaching and learning of Speaking and Listening skills with their future use at work place. It was also found an aspect of the teaching and learning of Speaking and Listening has been neglected. Based upon the findings, certain recommendations for actions and future research were made. It was recommended for the HoDs and the teachers to attend in-service training and to be part of the national networks that could promote Speaking and Listening. In addition all teachers are recommended to carry out action research. Apart from that there should be equivalent awareness-raising programmes for persons outside school who will meet the school leavers. Future research is needed in evaluating the effectiveness of in-service training and school and industry partnership in bringing positive changes to Speaking and Listening of students and school leavers. Research is also needed to determine whether school leavers who possess the recommended Speaking and Listening skills are in fact more effective than those who do not meet the requirements of work place.

Full text
Abstract:
The 300 series austenitic stainless steels have been used extensively and successfully in the Citrus Industry for numerous applications. Material cost and corrosion resistance to both citrus products and cleaning solutions for maintaining sanitary conditions has made type 304 and type 316 stainless steels the material of choice for process equipment, tanks, and piping systems. However, corrosion failures have occurred and many have been the subject of forensic investigations to determine the cause and provide recommendations to avoid future, similar problems. Historically, the primary modes of corrosion failure of T304SS and T316SS have been experienced not only in the Citrus Industry but also in the chemical and petrochemical industries. These modes of corrosion include localized corrosion in the form of pitting and crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Successful long-term performance is best obtained when (1) the correct alloy is selected for the application; (2) piping and equipment are carefully fabricated and passivated prior to being placed in service; and (3) the process system design and operation minimizes stagnation and solids deposition, especially at elevated temperature. A table listing the composition of the most commonly available and specified 300 series austenitic stainless steels is shown in Table 1. Paper published with permission.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper concerns an experimental study performed at a petrochemical plant of Enichem, located in Porto Torres, in the north western area of Sardinia. The investigation performed was centred on a steam cracking plant, the output of which is mainly composed of ethylene, propylene, pyrolytic benzine, hydrogen, methane and ethane. The study was focused on the problems concerning the maintenance of the plant components and the risks associated with the plant failures. The analysis, accomplished on a time interval of five years, from 1999 to 2004, enabled the characterization of the plant components and of the whole productive system from the point of view of the risk; this allowed to determine, in each year, which components are associated to the highest values of the risk, what is the behaviour of the most critical components during the five years under exam, which parts of the plant deserve a deeper attention and more resources and what kind of failures are the worst in terms of real damage produced. At the same time, a criticality analysis was performed employing both the MAGEC method and the Fuzzy Logic approach. The listing of the plant critical components based on the two methodologies employed places in the first positions the same components identified in the risk analysis. Nevertheless, in the results obtained through the risk analysis, some basic differences mainly due to the introduction of the basic economic aspects, are registered.

As a result, it is the present conditions that there is the anti-disaster measures manual which original, few marinas make. In addition, at the time of a disaster, a support system system on a fund side for the damage of a marina is not made clear. I will think that rebuilding of a system to manage, substantiality of a support system are necessary in future to make a marina good air space.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we analyze the problem of stabilizing a rotating eye movement control system satisfying the Listing’s constraint. The control system is described using a suitably defined Lagrangian and written in the corresponding Hamiltonian form. We introduce a damping control and show that this choice of control asymptotically stabilizes the equilibrium point of the dynamics, while driving the state to a point of minimum total energy. The equilibrium point can be placed by appropriately locating the minimum of a potential function. The damping controller has been shown to be optimal with respect to a suitable cost function. We choose alternate forms of this cost function, by adding a term proportional to the potential energy, and synthesize stabilizing control, using numerical solution to the the well known Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equation. Using Chebyshev collocation method, the newly synthesized controller is compared with the damping control.

Abstract:
Flipped classroom is not a new concept in education. Students are expected to be well-prepared before coming to face-to-face sessions since they have to read/watch/listen to the lectures through the learning management system (LMS) or an e-learning portal before coming to the classes. What traditionally was practised is that students were given lectures during face-to-face sessions. Now, the lectures are online, and only activities to enhance students’ understanding will take place during face-to-face sessions. The concept is now being implemented successfully in some higher learning institutions in Malaysia, including Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang; Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah; and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor. In fact, the emphasis is given by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia for all higher learning institutions to incorporate the use of technology in teaching and learning. Given this, the National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM) must also be prepared to rise to this challenge. This research becomes the main study on the use of flipped classroom at the NDUM

Full text
Abstract:
Product losses from pipelines, whether attributed to acts of man or nature, amount to operator losses of approximately USD 133 billion annually [1], not even considering costs associated with remediation, environmental damage, and reputational harm. When an incident occurs, pipeline operators need to minimize the event by quickly and accurately locating and quantifying the pipeline loss and its cause. Having this detailed knowledge enables determination of the best method for dealing with possible issues while helping minimize remediation costs, pipeline downtime, and the impact of the work on surrounding infrastructure. Currently, most systems for pipeline leak detection are limited to either listening methods, which require being online and monitoring both pipeline ends at the moment the leak occurs, or intrusive methods that require the insertion of a pig into the pipeline. Both of these techniques are restricted in usage because access should be available to both ends of the pipeline. Additionally, for the intrusive method, the pipeline should be piggable and, for the listening method, the instrumentation should be able to communicate with a central data processing point placed at both pipeline ends as they rely on travel time difference between signals received at either end of the pipeline. The method this paper describes is a proven, nonintrusive technology that can be used by pipeline operators to identify losses quickly and safely with a repeatable and verified high level of accuracy. It monitors the signature response of a generated fluid hammer and resulting pressure wave transiting within the pipeline and analyzes the reflected signature wave and pressure data to extrapolate both the location and magnitude of the loss with all pipeline parameters taken into account. The method enables operators to detect, locate, and quantify the loss of pipeline inventory in a safe and cost-effective manner without having to stop production, beyond the temporary closing of a mainline valve, or risk tools or personnel, due to exposure to pressurized fluids, before performing any intervention at the leak site.

Gutierrez, David, Nate Anderson, Chad Hanak, Tim Paton, Julia Vallejos, and Nick Brown. "Real-Time Wellbore Placement Improvement with High-Fidelity Trajectory Estimation and Dual-Sensor MWD Packages." In SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/206253-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract High-fidelity trajectory estimation combined with dual-probe Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) directional instrumentation provides a solution to minimum curvature’s known inefficiencies in modeling the true wellbore position and definition (Stockhausen &amp; Lesso, 2003). While it may not be cost efficient to increase survey frequency from the industry standard of 30ft-200ft, it is possible using the techniques defined in this research to maintain current survey intervals and increase wellbore placement accuracy while reducing positional uncertainty by up to 45% over the most advanced commercially available magnetic survey correction algorithms. Taking advantage of modern MWD tool platforms enables the installation of an additional (30-inch) survey measurement probe in the existing tool string with a fixed and known offset to the primary survey probe. Directional surveys from both survey probes are telemetered to surface at traditional course length survey intervals in real-time. The two surveys along with the known steering and non-steering intervals are processed through a high-fidelity trajectory estimation algorithm to quantify the wellbore behavior between survey stations. The result is a highly accurate and dense survey listing with modeled trajectory waypoints between traditional surveys to reduce the course length between directional measurement datapoints and better capture the true well path. Through extensive lab modeling, it was determined that the use of the dual-probe MWD package in combination with the high-fidelity trajectory estimation algorithm could result in a reduction in the Ellipse of Uncertainty (EOU) by 20% in the horizontal (semi-major) plane and 45% in the vertical (semi-minor) plane when compared to Multi-Station Analysis (MSA) and BHA Sag survey correction techniques. In addition to proof-of-concept modeling, the system has been deployed and used in real-time application on three separate pads, totaling nine wells. The results were able to validate and exceed baseline goals by exhibiting, on average, a reduction of the EOU by 21% in the horizontal plane and 58% in the vertical plane. Further, True Vertical Depth (TVD) error at well Total Depth (TD) in excess of 10ft was observed on three out of nine wells (33%) in this limited real-time application study. This difference was relative to separate, concurrent processing of the surveys via Multi-Station Analysis (MSA) and BHA sag corrections. This level of increased TVD accuracy is significant in many applications, depending on zone thickness and difficulty of geological interpretation. Increased accuracy and reduced uncertainty result from a better understanding of the true well path between traditional course length surveys. The trajectory estimation algorithm quantifies the rotational build/drop and walk rates in real-time and is reinforced by the dual-probe directional survey measurements. These tendencies can be used to better project forward to the bit as the well is drilled. Improved projection to the bit allows for enhanced recognition of deviation from the well plan and better-informed steering decisions.

Abstract:
The U.S. Congress codified the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA) mostly through the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), which requires federal agencies to address their cultural resources. Section 110 of the NHPA requires federal agencies to inventory and evaluate their cultural resources, and Section 106 requires them to determine the effect of federal undertakings on those potentially eligible for the NRHP. This report provides a World War II development history and analysis of 786 buildings, and determinations of eligibility for those buildings, on Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. Evaluation of the WWII buildings and landscape concluded that there are too few buildings with integrity to form a cohesive historic district. While the circulation patterns and roads are still intact, the buildings with integrity are scattered throughout the cantonment affecting the historic character of the landscape. Only Building 100 (post headquarters), Building 656 (dental clinic), and Building 550 (fire station) are ELIGIBLE for listing on the NRHP at the national level under Criterion A for their association with World War II temporary building construction (1942-1946) and under Criterion C for their design, construction, and technological innovation.

Nationwide context and evaluation methodology for farmstead and ranch historic sites and historic archaeological sites on DoD property. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/39842.

Abstract:
The Army is tasked with managing the cultural resources on its lands. For installations that contain large numbers of historic farmsteads, meeting these requirements through traditional archaeological approaches entails large investments of personnel, time and organization capital. Through two previous projects, Engineer Research and Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL) cultural resource management personnel developed a methodology for efficiently identifying the best examples of historic farmstead sites, and also those sites that are least likely to be deemed eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This report details testing the applicability of the methodology to regions across the country. Regional historic contexts were created to assist in the determination of “typical” farmsteads. The Farmstead/Ranch Eligibility Evaluation Form created by ERDC-CERL researchers was revised to reflect the broader geographic scope and the inclusion of ranches as a property type. The form was then used to test 29 sites at five military installations. The results of the fieldwork show this approach is applicable nationwide, and it can be used to quickly identify basic information about historic farmstead sites that can expedite determinations of eligibility to the National Register.

Lubkovych, Igor. METHODS OF JOURNALISTIC COMMUNICATION. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11096.

Full text
Abstract:
Journalistic communication is professional, its purpose is to obtain information and share it withthe audience. A journalist communicates when he intends to receive information directly from the interlocutor, from documents that the interlocutor has, or by observing the behavior of the interlocutor during the conversation. The most common method is communication in order to obtain verbal information. In the course of communication, a journalist succeeds when he adheres to politeness, clarity, brevity. It is important that the conditions of communication must be prepared or created: a place of communication, participants of communication, demonstration of listening skills, feedback. You should always try to get documentary evidence of what you have heard. An active reaction to what is heard by the journalist should be used to find out how much the interlocutor understands what is being said. At the beginning of the conversation, when the interlocutor expresses his attitude to the event or problem in question, it should not be interrupted. A journalist, like most people, often makes two mistakes when communicating: perceives as truth what is presented and attributes characteristics. Attribution of the characteristic as a psychological error is known since the beginning of the last century. And the perception of everything as the truth has long been inherent in our society.

Colomb, Claire, and Tatiana Moreira de Souza. Regulating Short-Term Rentals: Platform-based property rentals in European cities: the policy debates. Property Research Trust, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.52915/kkkd3578.

Full text
Abstract:
Short-term rentals mediated by digital platforms have positive and negative impacts that are unevenly distributed among socio-economic groups and places. Detrimental impacts on the housing market and quality of life of long-term residents have been particular contentious in some cities. • In the 12 cities studied in the report (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Prague, Rome and Vienna), city governments have responded differently to the growth of short-term rentals. • The emerging local regulations of short-term rentals take multiple forms and exhibit various degrees of stringency, ranging from rare cases of laissez-faire to a few cases of partial prohibition or strict quantitative control. Most city governments have sought to find a middle-ground approach that differentiates between the professional rental of whole units and the occasional rental of one’s home/ primary residence. • The regulation of short-term rentals is contentious and highly politicised. Six broad categories of interest groups and non-state actors actively participate in the debates with contrasting positions: advocates of the ‘sharing’ or ‘collaborative’ economy; corporate platforms; professional organisatons of short-term rental operators; new associations of hosts or ‘home-sharers’; the hotel and hospitality industry; and residents’ associations/citizens’ movements. • All city governments face difficulties in implementing and enforcing the regulations, due to a lack of sufficient resources and to the absence of accurate and comprehensive data on individual hosts. That data is held by corporate platforms, which have generally not accepted to release it (with a few exceptions) nor to monitor the content of their listings against local rules. • The relationships between platforms and city governments have oscillated between collaboration and conflict. Effective implementation is impossible without the cooperation of platforms. • In the context of the European Union, the debate has taken a supranational dimension, as two pieces of EU law frame the possibility — and acceptable forms — of regulation of online platforms and of short-term rentals in EU member states: the 2000 E-Commerce Directive and the 2006 Services Directive. • For regulation to be effective, the EU legal framework should be revised to ensure platform account- ability and data disclosure. This would allow city (and other ti ers of) governments to effectively enforce the regulations that they deem appropriate. • Besides, national and regional governments, who often control the legislative framework that defines particular types of short-term rentals, need to give local governments the necessary tools to be able to exercise their ‘right to regulate’ in the name of public interest objectives.
