Melamed, Daniel R. Epilogue: How to Listen to Bach. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190881054.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
There is, of course, no one way to listen to Bach. People listen in every conceivable manner, and there is no basis for saying that one way is better than any other. But there are ways of listening to Bach that might not have occurred to you, including those that take eighteenth-century musical sensibilities into account or that recognize the consequences of our place as listeners in the twenty-first century and as inheritors of a long performing tradition. The aim of this book has been to suggest and encourage those ways of listening....

Abstract:
Cities confront complex choices in managing rapid growth, including whether to protect their material heritage or let new development take its place. These topics are not well researched and call for a more systematic treatment. Governance-focused studies bring to the attention of conservators and city managers the institutional, regulatory, and financial underpinnings of the urban heritage conservation process that are not commonly discussed when listing monuments and heritage areas or when establishing rules and regulations for their conservation. This approach to the analysis of urban heritage conservation helps cultural institutions and city governments to identify the variety of social actors holding an interest in the urban heritage, better understand their interactions and conflicts, implement more effective institutional arrangements and regulations, and increase and better allocate financial resources to conserve the heritage.

Davies, Paul. Damages Actions by Investors on the Back of Market Disclosure Requirements. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198813392.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
EU rules requiring disclosures to the market by publicly traded companies have developed enormously since the first Listing Particulars Directive of 1980. However, even today they are hesitant about dealing with the subject of investor actions for damages for breaches of the rules. In relation to public offerings, periodic disclosures, and episodic disclosures, the current EU rules do not bring about harmonisation of national systems of damages liability in investor actions, but rather place almost exclusive emphasis on coordinated administrative action and sanctions. This chapter considers the question of how the liability rules should be shaped if they are to contribute most effectively to the achievement of the goals of the Union's disclosure rules. The discussions cover investor actions and the promotion of disclosure, investor litigation in the context of public offerings, and investor litigation in the context of continuing disclosures.

Pham, Thien C., Courtney Kominek, Abigail Brooks, and Jeffrey Fudin. Opioid Pharmacotherapies for Chronic Pain (DRAFT). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190265366.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
Chronic pain management employing opioids is divided into subtopics, including: risk–benefit balance; a review of the mode of action of opioid analgesics (Chap. 8); the suitability of synthetic opioids for neuropathic pain; endocrinopathy proceeding from opioid use; the use of the morphine-equivalent daily dose as a conversion tool for managing multiple opioids; the place of extended-release and long-acting opioids; current technology in abuse deterrence; and an overview of the challenges entailed in prescribing. This last section details the complex components of a decision to prescribe opioids for chronic pain. A table is provided of the classification of common opioid analgesics and their duration of activity. A text box gives the table of contents of Appendix B, supportive tables and figures therein for this chapter; there is also a text box listing additional resources.

Hollingworth, Miles. Numbers Station. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190873998.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
We are lured by the sounds of the numbers stations—by the sounds of infinity— away from what men actually saw and touched and out into a voyeuristic thrill. But as we listen in on the numbers as they speak to each other, we ourselves begin to be changed into a hideous likeness to them. Because that, of course, is the great danger of any ‘listening in’. It never takes place neutrally or passively. It is because of this that the Word of God can save men. And it is also because of this that the numbers station of the totality of atomic facts can destroy them. Because listening is never about the content of what is being transmitted; it is about the tuning in. In this chapter, we learn the sense in which the Tractatus was a spiritual autobiography.

Abstract:
Modern audiences can learn to listen to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor BWV 232 and Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 in ways that reflect eighteenth-century sensibilities and that recognize our place in the tradition of the works’ performance and interpretation. The sacred music of Bach’s time recognized both old and new styles. In the Mass in B Minor, Bach contrasts, combines, and reconciles them to make a musical point. Listeners can also learn to hear musical types and musical topics that were significant in the eighteenth century, including sleep arias, love duets, and secular choral arias, and how Bach put these types to use. A sensitivity to musical style also offers ways to listen to and think about music created by parody—the reuse of music with new words—like almost all of the Mass in B Minor and most of the Christmas Oratorio. Parody, though interesting, is almost never audible and is of little consequence compared with what listening tells us about a piece. Modern performances are stamped with audible consequences of our place in the twenty-first century. The ideological choices we make in performing the Mass and the Oratorio, the present-day way of performing the Christmas work in relation to the calendar, and the legacy of reception and interpretation have all affected the way his music is understood and heard today.

Abstract:
What does music making “look” like when viewed from a leisure studies perspective and the point of view of a drummer as participant observer? This chapter reports on four years of ethnographic research in Liverpool during which the author participated in a number of popular music groups as a drummer. The chapter is presented as an EP-style track listing that spotlights sites of music making and leisure practices in the production of this characterful city. In addition to the neglected experiences of drummers in popular music and leisure studies, it argues that rehearsal spaces also offer opportunities to explore the relations of music making, leisure, cities, place, regeneration, and social identities. Throughout, the chapter shows how a leisure perspective opens up different views of music making in terms of social, historical, political, and economic relations. Such a perspective, especially from a drummer’s-eye view, showcases the worthiness of researching music making as leisure.
