Abstract:
Lisu (ISO 639-2 lis) is spoken by just over a million members of the group of this name in south-western China, north-eastern Burma, northern Thailand and north-eastern India. It formerly also had other names used by outsiders, including Yeren (Chinese yeren ‘wild people’), and Yawyin in Burma and Yobin in India (both derived from the Chinese term). Other names included Lisaw from the Shan and Thai name for the group, also seen in the former Burmese name Lishaw. About two-thirds of the speakers live in China, especially in north-western Yunnan Province, but also scattered elsewhere in Yunnan and Sichuan. About a quarter live in the Kachin State and the northern Shan State in Burma, with a substantial number in Chiangmai, Chiangrai and other provinces of Thailand, and a few thousand in Arunachal Pradesh in India. It is also spoken as a second language by many speakers of Nusu, Anung, Rawang and others in north-western Yunnan and northern Burma. Lisu has almost completely replaced Anung in China and is replacing Lemei in China. The Lisu are one of the 55 national minorities recognised in China, one of 135 ethnic groups recognised in Burma, a scheduled (officially listed and recognised) tribe in India, and one of the recognised hill tribe groups of Thailand. Figure 1 shows a map of the area where Lisu is spoken.

Abstract:
The Lisu are a largely Christian minority group in south-west China who, as an oral culture, express their faith more through a set of Christian practices done as a group and less through bible reading as individuals. Even so, the Lisu practice of Christianity specifically, and Lisu culture more generally, was profoundly impacted by the written scriptures. During the initial evangelisation of the Lisu by the China Inland Mission, missionaries created a written script for the Lisu language. Churches were constructed and organised, which led to the creation of bible schools and the work of bible translation. In the waves of government persecution after 1949, Lisu New Testaments were hidden away up in the mountains by Lisu Christians. After 1980, the Lisu reclaimed their faith by listening to the village elders tell the Old Story around the fires and reopening the churches that had been closed for twenty-two years. And they reclaimed their bible by retrieving the scriptures from the hills and copying them in the evening by the light of a torch. The Lisu bible has its own narrative history, consisting of script creating, translating, migrating, and copying by hand. At times it was largely influenced by the mission narrative, but at other times, the Lisu bible itself was the lead character in the story. Ultimately, the story of the Lisu bible reflects the Lisu Christian story of moving from missionary beginnings to local leadership and, ultimately, to local theological inquiry.

Abstract:
David Bradley claims there must be a mindset shift in terms of the treatment given to endangered languages. For that matter, “dead language” is no longer acceptable, but rather “sleeping language”, for instance. Providing examples of awakened languages, such as Lisu and Bisu, Bradley reaches out linguists and non linguists to reclaim languages in order to protect cultural identities. In spite of the work being done by scholars, the presenter argues that research on endangered languages must have governmental support along with universities and other authorities. It is only with conjoined forces that languages can be reclaimed and cultural identities can be preserved.

Abstract:
Lisu is a Sino-Tibetan language of Central Ngwi branch. It has multiple tonal contrasts and a typologically unusual vowel inventory. In this talk, I present an acoustic phonetic study based on data collected from eleven speakers of Northern Lisu, spoken in Nujiang Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan, Southwestern China. The study focuses on the vowels and tones of the language, and their interaction. Northern Lisu has six tones, including four modal and two creaky-voiced tones; it has ten vowels, including five front vowels, four back vowels, and a central “fricative” vowel. Tone and vowel interaction is analyzed using Esling’s Laryngeal Articulator Model. Results show all speakers produce a lower f0 in the retracted vowel context, but it is not the case that all tones are creakier in this same vowel context. Simultaneously, male and female speakers show differences in terms of voice quality. Examination of the vowel space shows a reduction in many vowel contrasts. It is suggested that the vowel space is becoming regularised, with perceptually difficult contrasts being neutralised. In addition, it is shown that the fricative vowel contains minimal frication compared to the fricative consonants, and as such is better described as a syllabic retroflex approximant.

Abstract:
Aims and objectives: This paper describes the multilingualism patterns practiced in the Zauzou community, a small ethnic group in Southwestern China. Zauzou is in contact with Lisu, Bai, Lama, and Mandarin Chinese. The present study aims to characterize the relationship between the social/linguistic factors including age, second language (L2), types of code-alternation, and the multilingualism patterns in this community. Design/methodology/approach: Self-reports and participant observation were used to discover any recurrent multilingualism patterns regulated by social/linguistic factors. Data and analysis: Self-reported data on Zauzou speakers’ language repertoire and language use were collected by means of demographic survey. Code-alternation between Zauzou and different L2s were collected from systematic linguistic fieldwork. Findings/conclusions: Zauzou is the dominant language in intragroup multilingualism, while intergroup multilingualism is dominated by Zauzou speakers’ L2s. Zauzou speakers exhibit a shift from the local multilingualism toward Mandarin-Zauzou bilingualism. The two patterns can be characterized by speakers’ age, L2, and the type of code-alternation. Zauzou-Mandarin bilingualism is realized as both code-mixing and code-switching, and is pervasive among the younger generation, while multilingualism is realized as code-switching and is dominant among older speakers. This shift is due to the new market economy and the language policy that promotes Mandarin in the whole area. Originality: This study presents naturalistic data on multilingualism practices in a small minority group in China, which is overlooked by most linguistic descriptions and sociolinguistic studies of lesser-studied languages in China. Significance/implications: This paper discovers three parameters to define two cross-linguistic multilingualism patterns in small indigenous societies: the local multilingualism and the national bilingualism, and the shift toward bilingualism that directly results from language policy and economy.

AbstractIt is usually agreed that programming languages for implementing (other) programming languages, or ‘implementation languages’, should be simple low-level languages which are close to the machine code and to the operating system. In this paper it is argued that a very high level implementation language is a good idea, of particular importance for knowledge-based systems, and that Lisp (as a language and as a system) is very well suited to be a very high level implementation language. The significance of special-purpose programming languages is also discussed, and the requirements that they have for a very high level implementation language are considered.

Abstract:
Dutch–English participants named words and nonwords with a between-language phonologically inconsistent rime, e.g., GREED and PREED, and control words with a language-typical rime, e.g., GROAN, in a monolingual stimulus list or in a mixed list containing Dutch words. Inconsistent items had longer latencies and more errors than typical items in the mixed lists but not in the pure list. The consistency effect depended on word frequency, but not on language membership, lexicality, or instruction. Instruction did affect the relative speed and number of errors in the two languages. The consistency effect is the consequence of the simultaneous activation of two sublexical codes in the bilinguals' two languages and its size depends on the activation rate of the associated lexical representations (high-frequency words versus low-frequency words and nonwords) and on the decision criteria that monitor the response conflict at the decision level: the timing for responding (time criterion) in each language depends on the composition of the stimulus list and the likelihood of responses in either language.

Em seguida, são apresentadas as características e as conceituações pertinentes ao estilo orientado a objetos. A contribuição deste trabalho e sua apresentação nesta dissertação é a descrição da semântica e sintaxe da linguagem LispObj. Os construtores desenvolvidos, o ambiente interativo e a implementação do sistema também são apresentados. Com o objetivo de explorar as facilidades oferecidas pela nova linguagem, é apresentado um exemplo de aplicação.
The goal of this dissertation is to describe the semantic and the implementation of a new language that provides programming in two styles - Functional and Object- Oriented. First we present the features and definitions of the object-oriented style. The contribuition of this work is the description of the semantic andsyntax of the LispObj language. The constructors development. Interactive environment and system implementation are also presented. In order to explore the facilities provided by the new language. An aplication program is provided as an example.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a systematic analysis on the syntax of nominal expressions in LIS (Italian sign language). Combining three apparently irreconcilable theoretical frameworks, namely linguistic typology, generative linguistics, and sociolinguistics, new insights on the structure of LIS nominal domain are offered. In this thesis, three empirical studies are presented. The first one is a quantitative study on the distribution of LIS nominal modifiers with respect to the noun. The second one is a quantitative study on the duration of these modifiers. The findings resulting from these two studies, both based on the investigation of corpus data through statistical computing, reveal that the variation instantiated in LIS nominal expressions display a considerable amount of linguistic variation. However, this variation is far from being random since it appears highly constrained by the syntactic options that natural languages allow. The third study focuses on the syntactic behavior characterizing cardinal numerals in LIS. In particular, this study shows how quantitative and qualitative procedures can be fruitfully combined together in order to provide a clearer picture of the issue under investigation. The analysis of corpus data and elicited data specifically collected for this thesis reveals that the distribution of cardinals is highly sensitive to the fine-grained distinction between definite and indefinite nominal expressions. All these aspects are accounted for in a syntactic analysis showing that the constraints observed in crosslinguistic variation are also applicable to languages instantiating intralinguistic variation like LIS.

Abstract:
The present dissertation investigates the existence and realization of processes conveying features of diminutive, augmentative, endearment and pejorative in Italian Sign Language (LIS). Within the theoretical background of the Cartographic Project and Linguistic Typology, this work is also an attempt to demonstrate whether the theory of the extended projection of the NP proposed by Cinque (2005, 2015) accounts for LIS as well, by observing if the order of LIS constituents respects the universal one. For the investigation, I developed a research involving three LIS native signers in tasks of elicitation, narration and grammaticality judgements and I analysed a corpus of 22 tales produced in LIS by LIS native signers. The objective was to see if those features usually defined by the adjectives big, small, cute, ugly, could be incorporated in the sign of the noun and conveyed without the articulation of the sign of the adjective. The results demonstrated that non-manual markers and classifiers have a main role in these processes and that their articulation respects the position of their functional projections within the syntactic structure, supporting my hypothesis to concern NNMs conveying features of diminutive, augmentative, endearment and pejorative as heads of dedicated functional projections. Finally, I confirm that processes of evaluative morphology constitute a morphological type while providing examples from other sign languages: ASL, LSF, ISL, BSL, DGS, PJM, AdaSL.

Abstract:
The learning of second language vocabulary in lists of word-pairs is a widespread practice despite the disapproval of many in the second language learning domain. There is an acknowledged mismatch between psychological theories on the one hand and techniques of vocabulary learning on the other. Psychology does not address the relevant issues directly and second language learning practice is often atheoretical and unprincipled. This thesis reviews aspects of psychology which appear to be relevant to second language vocabulary learning and their applicability. A series of experiments is conducted with comprehensive school students learning French, aged 11-13. The first part of the study deals with the presentation of vocabulary items to be learned. Presenting items in the order First Language - Second Language is the more versatile form of presentation if both generation and comprehension are required on the part of the learner. The transferability of list learning to testing in a sentential context depends on the ability of the learner and the task involved. Higher-ability list learners are inhibited in a generation task but not in a comprehension task; the opposite is true for lower-ability learners. Learning in a context improves the performance of higher-ability learners in generation but makes little difference to lower-ability learners. An explanation is suggested in terms of transfer-appropriate processing. The position of items in the list is not a reliable indicator of learnability. Primacy, recency, and serial effects may be obtained but none of them is consistent. The same conclusion applies to different ways of presenting wordpairs. The second part of the study examines aspects of word learnability. Objective word frequency is not a reliable indicator of learnability in this context. Word category and the presence of an English word embedded in a French word are promising indicators of leamability.

La langue lissoue est une langue appartenant a la famille des langues tibetobrimanes. Les classificateurs lissous sont utilises pour signifier la forme, la fonction et la qualite propre ou specifique des mots classifies. Dans la tradition orale, a trouve les classificateurs qui ne sont pas utilises dans la vie quotidienne. Ils sont des mots anciens ou archaiques, ou des mots qui s'emploient selon les regles de la poesie, c'est-a-dire, selon des rimes et des combinaisons semantiques. Les classificateurs lissous nous montrent les liens profonds entre la langue et la culture. Ils nous aident a mieux connaitre la culture des lissous : les croyances, la cosmogonie, la perception des objects et des choses autour d'eux, la parente et la solidarite familiale, la culture et le commerce d'opieum, la communication avec le monde exterieur, ect. Ils jouent egalement des roles sociologiques en exprimant l'amitie, la politesse, la colere, l'injure. Ils y a egalement les classificateurs qui ne sont utilises que par les enfants, les jeunes ou les personnes agees. En outre, on a remarque que la vision et la perception personnelle jouent egalement les roles importants. Comme un sujet a plusieurs qualites, il peut porter plusieurs classificateurs selon leurs qualites, ou selon la perception de chaque individu. Cette perception concerne toujours la fonction et la qualite propre ou specifique du mot classe
Lisu language is one of the languages in the tibeto-burman language family lisu classifiers are used to signity the shapes, the functions and the proper or special qualities of the classified words. In oral literature, we found some classifiers which are not employed in daily life. They are old or archaie terms, or the words which are used according to the poetic characters (rhymes and semantic conbinations). The classifiers in lisu point out a deep relation between language and culture. The help us to understand the life and the culture of the lisu people, for exemple, their perception of things, their cosmogony, their beliefs, their kinship system and family solidarity, their cultivation and the trade of opium, their communication with the outside wolrd, ect. Moreover, this kind of word play some sociological roles : they demonstrate friendliness, politiness, anger, insult, insult ; and some of them are only used by the children, the young or the old people. Besides, we have to note that personal visions and perceptions are important too. In the case that a subject has several qualities, it can take many classifiers after his qualities, or after the perceptions of the speaker. These perceptions always relate to the functions, the shapes and the special or proper qualities of the classified words

Abstract:
Published in TESOL Quarterly a decade ago, the Academic Word List (AWL) (Coxhead, 2000) has become increasingly influential in the field of TESOL. With more than 82% of the AWL comprised of words of Latin and Greek, much of this important list logically consists of English-Spanish cognates because Spanish originated from Latin. In order to serve Spanish-speaking English language learners (SSELLs) better, their teachers need to know which AWL words are cognates. Using published sources and linguistic analysis of the 570 items in the AWL, the research in this thesis has resulted in a newly reorganized AWL divided into four categories that are more useful for our Spanish-speaking English language learners as well as their instructors, curriculum designers, and materials writers: English-Spanish true cognates, partial cognates, false cognates, and non-cognates.

Starting with the introduction of Visual Studio .NET (VS .NET) application developers can write programs that may be used for different languages listed in VB .NET globalization. However, this globalization list is incomplete and is missing many languages. Among the languages that are missing from VB globalization is the Kurdish language. This paper makes a case for adding the Kurdish language to the list used in VB .NET globalization. The paper starts by explaining about VB .NET globalization, the Kurdish language and then makes a case for adding the Kurdish language. Making the case is based on factors considered in including languages and also on the features of the Kurdish language. A summary and suggested future work is included at the end.

Abstract:
The present work reports the results of a comprehension task on verb directionality in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and French Sign Language (LSF) considering native and non-native signers. Our goals were to study age of first language exposure effects on the comprehension of verb agreement in LIS and LSF, to verify whether a significant difference between forward and backward directionality was found, and see if our results may provide insight about the nature (gestural vs. linguistic) of verb directionality in sign languages. In both languages we found that the ability to comprehend verb agreement is affected in non-native signers. This indicates that delayed first language exposure has long lasting effects in adulthood. We argue that our results support analyses of verb agreement as a fully grammatical phenomenon.

Abstract:
In this paper we focus on a less usual way to represent Boolean functions, namely on representations by switch-lists. Given a truth table representation of a Boolean function f the switch-list representation (SLR) of f is a list of Boolean vectors from the truth table which have a different function value than the preceding Boolean vector in the truth table. The main aim of this paper is to include the language SL of all SLR in the Knowledge Compilation Map [Darwiche and Marquis, 2002] and to argue, that SL may in certain situations constitute a reasonable choice for a target language in knowledge compilation. First we compare SL with a number of standard representation languages (such as CNF, DNF, and OBDD) with respect to their relative succinctness. As a by-product of this analysis we also give a short proof of a long standing open question from [Darwiche and Marquis, 2002], namely the incomparability of MODS (models) and PI (prime implicates) languages. Next we analyze which standard transformations and queries (those considered in [Darwiche and Marquis, 2002] can be performed in poly-time with respect to the size of the input SLR. We show that this collection is quite broad and the combination of poly-time transformations and queries is quite unique.

One of these missing languages from VS .NET globalization is the Kurdish: a language written and spoken by millions of Kurds around the world. Previous research conducted by the authors made a case for adding the Kurdish language to the globalization component of the .NET Framework. We were hopeful that the Kurdish will be added to VS .NET in the latest version (VS .NET 2005) that was yet to be released in full version at the time of writing that paper. However, VS .NET 2005 has been released, and to our disappointment, Microsoft excluded the Kurdish language again from the languages it supports in VS .NET. This paper is to emphasize adding Kurdish to VS .NET globalization component. It shows that there are no technical, lingual or cultural hurdles for adding Kurdish to VS .NET globalization and thus it is time to add the Kurdish Culture to the newly released Microsoft .Net Framework.

The authors discuss the provision of subject-specific search in library e-catalogs (EC). For the purposes of analysis of information retrieval languages, the ECs of Russian libraries with the collections exceeding 4 m entries were examined. The representative list comprises libraries of various types and levels. It was found that each library used its own set of information retrieval languages for providing subject-specific search, with the most popular subject headings language, keywords language, Library Bibliographic Classification [RF LBC or BBK], Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information (SRSTI, or GRNTI) and Supreme Attestation Commission Rubricator (VAK Rubricator). Beside the above-mentioned information retrieval languages, the libraries use their proprietary information retrieval languages, e.g. Rubricator of the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, classification indexes of the Russian State Historical Library, or classification indexes of MSU Scientific Library. The authors conclude that the e-catalogs of the libraries under study enable subject-specific search with verbal languages (all the considered libraries) and classification languages (the majority of the considered libraries). The common features of subject-specific information retrieval in the library e-catalogs are formulated. The recommendations on how to develop provision of subject-specific retrieval when upgrading e-catalogs are suggested. This paper discusses the use of a Web 2.0 technology tool – educational blog – in the system of teaching foreign languages for enhancement of teaching effectiveness and optimization of students’ performance. The authors describe the content, characteristics and didactic properties of an educational blog as an alternative or auxiliary educational environment, define its methodological objectives and list a number of advantages of this approach versus conventional teaching model. The effectiveness of the above-mentioned Web 2.0 technology tool was confirmed by the experiment which showed that an educational blog integrated in a foreign language teaching system contributed to optimization of the process of teaching and learning, development of foreign language communicative competence of students and thereby allowed them to acquire not only communicative but also technological skills.

The subject of the study is a methodological technique of organizing effective computer support for future teachers to work independently in a foreign (German) language. Objectives of the study: to state the goals of studying foreign languages in its broad and narrow sense, the requirements for the results of future teachers’ training in different subjects; to explore ways of organizing computer support for future teachers’ independent work; to determine the list and purpose of the basic and auxiliary structural elements of a typical e-learning Moodle course in a foreign language; to provide methodological recommendations for the organization of future teachers’ independent work in the content of a separate training module of the Moodle course “Foreign (German) Language”. The article summarizes the experience of organizing computer support for future teachers’ independent work and the substantive and methodological features of its implementation into the process of experimental introduction of the Moodle course “Foreign (German) Language” into the educational process carried out on the basis of Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University.

Abstract:
The process of mastering, systematizing and automatizing systems language skills occupies a key place in the theory and practice of teaching foreign languages and cultures. Following the main trends of modern applied linguistics in the field of multilingual research, we hypothesize the advisability of using the lexical approach in mastering the entire complex of systems skills (grammar, vocabulary, phonology, functions, discourse) in students receiving multilingual education at higher educational institutions. In order to theoretically substantiate the hypothesis, the authors carry out structural, semantic, and phonological analysis of the main lexical units (collocations). After this, linguodidactic analysis of students’ hypothetical problems and, as a result, problems related to the teaching of relevant linguistic and axiological features is carried out. At the final stage of the paper, a list of possible outcomes from the indicated linguistic and methodological problematic situations is given. This article is the first in the cycle of linguodidactic studies of the features of learning and teaching systems language skills in a multilingual educational space.
