Mantovan, Lara <1985&gt. "Nominal modification in Italian sign language (LIS)." Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/5642.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a systematic analysis on the syntax of nominal expressions in LIS (Italian sign language). Combining three apparently irreconcilable theoretical frameworks, namely linguistic typology, generative linguistics, and sociolinguistics, new insights on the structure of LIS nominal domain are offered. In this thesis, three empirical studies are presented. The first one is a quantitative study on the distribution of LIS nominal modifiers with respect to the noun. The second one is a quantitative study on the duration of these modifiers. The findings resulting from these two studies, both based on the investigation of corpus data through statistical computing, reveal that the variation instantiated in LIS nominal expressions display a considerable amount of linguistic variation. However, this variation is far from being random since it appears highly constrained by the syntactic options that natural languages allow. The third study focuses on the syntactic behavior characterizing cardinal numerals in LIS. In particular, this study shows how quantitative and qualitative procedures can be fruitfully combined together in order to provide a clearer picture of the issue under investigation. The analysis of corpus data and elicited data specifically collected for this thesis reveals that the distribution of cardinals is highly sensitive to the fine-grained distinction between definite and indefinite nominal expressions. All these aspects are accounted for in a syntactic analysis showing that the constraints observed in crosslinguistic variation are also applicable to languages instantiating intralinguistic variation like LIS.

Abstract:
The present dissertation investigates the existence and realization of processes conveying features of diminutive, augmentative, endearment and pejorative in Italian Sign Language (LIS). Within the theoretical background of the Cartographic Project and Linguistic Typology, this work is also an attempt to demonstrate whether the theory of the extended projection of the NP proposed by Cinque (2005, 2015) accounts for LIS as well, by observing if the order of LIS constituents respects the universal one. For the investigation, I developed a research involving three LIS native signers in tasks of elicitation, narration and grammaticality judgements and I analysed a corpus of 22 tales produced in LIS by LIS native signers. The objective was to see if those features usually defined by the adjectives big, small, cute, ugly, could be incorporated in the sign of the noun and conveyed without the articulation of the sign of the adjective. The results demonstrated that non-manual markers and classifiers have a main role in these processes and that their articulation respects the position of their functional projections within the syntactic structure, supporting my hypothesis to concern NNMs conveying features of diminutive, augmentative, endearment and pejorative as heads of dedicated functional projections. Finally, I confirm that processes of evaluative morphology constitute a morphological type while providing examples from other sign languages: ASL, LSF, ISL, BSL, DGS, PJM, AdaSL.

Griffin, Gerard Francis. "Aspects of the psychology of second language vocabulary list learning." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1992. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/36070/.

Full text
Abstract:
The learning of second language vocabulary in lists of word-pairs is a widespread practice despite the disapproval of many in the second language learning domain. There is an acknowledged mismatch between psychological theories on the one hand and techniques of vocabulary learning on the other. Psychology does not address the relevant issues directly and second language learning practice is often atheoretical and unprincipled. This thesis reviews aspects of psychology which appear to be relevant to second language vocabulary learning and their applicability. A series of experiments is conducted with comprehensive school students learning French, aged 11-13. The first part of the study deals with the presentation of vocabulary items to be learned. Presenting items in the order First Language - Second Language is the more versatile form of presentation if both generation and comprehension are required on the part of the learner. The transferability of list learning to testing in a sentential context depends on the ability of the learner and the task involved. Higher-ability list learners are inhibited in a generation task but not in a comprehension task; the opposite is true for lower-ability learners. Learning in a context improves the performance of higher-ability learners in generation but makes little difference to lower-ability learners. An explanation is suggested in terms of transfer-appropriate processing. The position of items in the list is not a reliable indicator of learnability. Primacy, recency, and serial effects may be obtained but none of them is consistent. The same conclusion applies to different ways of presenting wordpairs. The second part of the study examines aspects of word learnability. Objective word frequency is not a reliable indicator of learnability in this context. Word category and the presence of an English word embedded in a French word are promising indicators of leamability.

Abstract:
Lisu language is one of the languages in the tibeto-burman language family lisu classifiers are used to signity the shapes, the functions and the proper or special qualities of the classified words. In oral literature, we found some classifiers which are not employed in daily life. They are old or archaie terms, or the words which are used according to the poetic characters (rhymes and semantic conbinations). The classifiers in lisu point out a deep relation between language and culture. The help us to understand the life and the culture of the lisu people, for exemple, their perception of things, their cosmogony, their beliefs, their kinship system and family solidarity, their cultivation and the trade of opium, their communication with the outside wolrd, ect. Moreover, this kind of word play some sociological roles : they demonstrate friendliness, politiness, anger, insult, insult ; and some of them are only used by the children, the young or the old people. Besides, we have to note that personal visions and perceptions are important too. In the case that a subject has several qualities, it can take many classifiers after his qualities, or after the perceptions of the speaker. These perceptions always relate to the functions, the shapes and the special or proper qualities of the classified words

Abstract:
Published in TESOL Quarterly a decade ago, the Academic Word List (AWL) (Coxhead, 2000) has become increasingly influential in the field of TESOL. With more than 82% of the AWL comprised of words of Latin and Greek, much of this important list logically consists of English-Spanish cognates because Spanish originated from Latin. In order to serve Spanish-speaking English language learners (SSELLs) better, their teachers need to know which AWL words are cognates. Using published sources and linguistic analysis of the 570 items in the AWL, the research in this thesis has resulted in a newly reorganized AWL divided into four categories that are more useful for our Spanish-speaking English language learners as well as their instructors, curriculum designers, and materials writers: English-Spanish true cognates, partial cognates, false cognates, and non-cognates.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Bilingual dictionaries should have a decoding as well as an encoding function. Decoding dictionaries want to assist the user in interpreting the language, while encoding dictionaries want to help the user with the usage of the language. The present role of a bilingual or translation dictionary has to change from that of supplying only translation equivalents to one of supplying a more comprehensive data presentation. This should also include additional semantic and pragmatic information. The main aim of a bilingual dictionary should not only be the establishment of a relation of semantic equivalence between source and target language, but also reaching communicative equivalence in the process. This means that the user must be able to find the applicable equivalent of the source language item in the target language. One of the best ways for a lexicographer to test the communicative aptness of a given translation equivalent, is by means of the reversibility principle. It means that lexical item A, included as translation equivalent of lemma B in the X-section of a bidirectional translation dictionary, has to be included as a lemma in the Y-section ofthe dictionary with at least the lexical item B, the relevant lemma from the X-section, as one of its translation equivalents. Each lexical item included as a translation equivalent in the Y-section has to be included as the lemma in the X-section of the dictionary with at least the respective lemma from the Ysection as a translation equivalent. This thesis tries to show how, if not adhered to the above principles, an inferior product can be the result of many hours of painstaking work. The main problematic areas are inter alia those of labels, spelling inconsistencies and an absence of translation equivalents. However, some of the less obvious problematic areas are also touched upon.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Tweetalige woordeboeke behoort 'n dekoderende sowel as 'n enkoderende funksie te hê.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation offers a detailed description of the display of evaluative features in LIS. The analysis of naturalistic and elicited data shows that LIS exploits simultaneous and sequential strategies. A morphophonological analysis reveals that: LIS is endowed with dedicated non-manual markers for each feature; these markers are evaluative bound morphemes; phonological and semantic constraints motivate the alternation between sequential and simultaneous strategies. The combination of three different theoretical approaches was crucial to gain a complete picture of the phenomenon. From a generative perspective, the results support the universality of evaluative features and that the syntactic engine deriving evaluative constructions in spoken languages is active in LIS as well; typologically, evaluative constructions in LIS respect the generalisations defined for spoken languages, despite the different modality employed; from a cognitive point of view, data show that LIS can exploit its articulators to visually encode concepts that remain abstract in spoken languages.

Abstract:
Nowadays, probabilistic models are playing a significant role in various areas in- cluding machine learning, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, etc. How- ever, as those models are becoming more and more complex, it shows that the corresponding programs are really hard to maintain and reuse as well. Meanwhile, the current tools are not feasible enough to enable probabilistic modeling and ma- chine learning to be accessible to the working programmer, who has sufficient do- main expertise, but perhaps not enough expertise in probability theory or machine learning. Probabilistic programming is one possible way to solve this. Indeed, probabilistic programming languages are powerful tools to specify probabilistic models directly in terms of a computer programs. While programmers writes normal procedures, everything will be automatically translated into statistical distributions and then users can do inferences upon them. This project aims at exploring and implementing a probabilistic programming language, for which we name as Shelang. We use Scheme, a dialect of Lisp lan- guage which is originated from λ-Calculus, to implement a embedded probabilis- tic programming language. This paper mainly discusses about the design, algo- rithms, details of this implementation and several usages of Shelang and make a conclusion in the end.

Martinez, Ron. "The development of a corpus-informed list of formulaic sequences for language pedagogy." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2011. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12963/.

Abstract:
Discussion around the importance and prevalence of multiword expressions in the lexicon and the teaching of vocabulary has existed for a number of years in applied linguistics (e. g. lrujo, 1986; Pawley and Syder, 1983; Sinclair, 1987; Wray, 2002). While there seems to be a general agreement among scholars that formulaic language should feature in language learning and, perhaps to a lesser extent, language testing, there appears to be rather less agreement when it comes to how to select and/or prioritize specific items for inclusion. One criterion for selection which has been used often for vocabulary items of single words is frequency (i.e. how relatively common a word is), data for which can be consulted using various frequency lists that have long existed and are in the public domain, such as the General Service List (West, 1953). However, to date, no list of formulaic language that could be considered comparable to the General Service List in terms of intended use and relevance to language instruction has been attempted. The work presented in the present thesis aims to address this lack. The thesis first presents the need for such a list, and then describes the methodology employed by the researcher to ultimately produce a frequency-informed and pedagogically-relevant list of multiword expressions that can be used in conjunction with existing lists single orthographic words to help inform such instruments of L2 pedagogy as language textbooks and language tests, entitled the PHRASal Expressions List, or PHRASE List. To that end, two projects are also presented in the thesis which exemplify ways in which the list may be usefully employed. The first is a research validation exercise carried out in collaboration with the English Profile project in order to compare the phraseological component of the English Profile Wordlist to the expressions in the PHRASE List. The second project presents the development and validation of a kind of vocabulary test that samples from the PHRASE List, and which is intended to be used to supplement knowledge assessed in existing tests of single orthographic words, such as the Vocabulary Size Test (Nation & Beglar, 2007).

Abstract:
This thesis presents code generation techniques related to run-time type checking of heterogeneous but regular sequences. We generalize traditional regular expressions to accommodate surface syntax, internal representation, computation, optimization, and serialization (code generation) of rational type expressions. We explore traditional s-expression based representation contrasted with Binary Decision Diagrams which have been enhanced to represent Boolean operations in a type lattice supporting subtyping. We introduce the Maximal Disjoint Type Decomposition, prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution, and further explore several alternative algorithms for calculating it. The Maximal Disjoint Type Decomposition is used to generate a deterministic finite automaton representing a rational type expression, after which compile-time code is generated which will perform run-time type membership checks. Such code generation risks dealing with redundant type checks. We further investigate these potential problems and again use the theory of Binary Decision Diagrams to eliminate these redundant checks to produce optimized type checking code. The techniques and algorithms introduced and discussed in this thesis explore representations and computations dealing with type based computations in dynamic programming languages

Abstract:
Between the XIIIth century and the XVIIth century, a specific nautical vocabulary is building, vocabulary of Levant navy of the different from Ponant one used in the Atlantic. This vocabulary come from the travel, in all the Mediterranean space, of the words in the time, from Indo-European, Latin and Greek languages. This exchanges allow all languages Mediterranean learn from each other. Travel stories in Jerusalem constitute an important source because they are drafted by men who never have seen previously sea and who live their first experience of sailing; they have to learn everything to be able to transmit their experience to their readers. The Mediterranean linguistic crossbreeding is the fact of the sailors who transmit to the traders and to the travelers who cross the Mediterranean Sea. The writers-travelers tell their navigation by showing their feelings, by expressing their admiration for the new spectacles which they discover. As sea is an unknown element, it very often generates fear. The sailing time is a necessary and rewarding event. The constitution of a specific vocabulary shows that beyond wars, corsairs, perils of sea, the men spoke to each other, built together the necessary tools to name things, it means understand its and understand each other

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the linguistic phenomenon in which an indexical sign (IX) occurs in clause-final position in Italian Sign Language (LIS). The aim of this study is to determine its linguistic status and the extent of its usage. Deaf native LIS signers recruited in this study have been asked to participate to a grammaticality judgement task and a sentence repetition task, whose input sentences are signed by a deaf native LIS signer. Clause-final IX subjects and clause-final IX (direct) objects are analyzed in different sentence types, namely declarative sentences, polar interrogative sentences, and wh- interrogative sentences. The proposal here advanced is that clause-final IX subjects are instances of inversion, while clause-final IX (direct) objects are instances of extraction from the DP object, used to fulfill different syntactic and pragmatic purposes.

Abstract:
Our work intitulé¨Circonstants of time and place in Coran ¨ consists of a demonstration of the hypothetical instability of the Arab language. With this intention, we took, for historical point of reference, the Arab language of the 7th century of the Christian era. A state of language represented by a corpus definite and representative of the time that is Coran. For our study we chose, like sample of the language which seemed to us likely to be exposed to instability, circonstant it of time and place governed directly with the accusative by the verb. Our step consists, in a first stage, to describe the state of circonstant in Coran and to show the significant reasons of instability and variations that it is at the morphological level that syntactic. The second stage is presented in the form of a draft of the historical but hypothetical evolution of circonstant on a diachrony, since its genesis of until its state in Coran

The multi-agent based systems (MAS) are made up of information processing units (virtual agents), engineered to allow interaction among their peers and their own environment over time. These systems are developed for the study of the emergence of language and intelligence among agents. With these models, in which the variables related to communication can be more precisely measured and controlled, one can study the origin and the interferences that entail natural language. Also, the factors that influence language, and what language itself is able to influence could be better understood. Since language is one of the elements necessary for abstraction and intelligence, the study of its emergence may be the key element for the development of artificial intelligence. The forms of interaction and language to emerge among agents benefit capacities of representation so that communication may be the starting point for the agents to conceptualize their world, allowing them to develop high cognitive levels. Our general aim is to defend that artificial semantics exists from pragmatism and the theory of enation, understanding the phenomenon of language as a complex and dynamic system emerged among such agents. Our specific goal includes contributions to the advances in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and the reality of human language itself, in order to review, improve and develop theories by a selectable method. The methodology chosen was through research, studies, and reviews of periodicals, articles, works and books that involve complex interactions, language emergence, Peirce's semiotics and linguistic concepts. The results show that, comprehending language as a system of symbolic relations from pragmatism and analytic methods, MAS are able to generate forms of language and consequently abstraction and intelligence. This way, language is seen as a complex and multicausal system that may be better understood from computing modelling based in complex systems. The competence of the agents to transform their environment makes them active in creating and changings of their own system, forming a functional and intelligent group. Based on cognitive linguistics and pragmatism, we conclude that artificial semantics exist from interaction processes, since it is possible to notice the emergence of language and autonomous forms of high level representations.

The introduction develops the theoretical framework : the history and the representations of the place, their evolution and their constitutive elements. The first part deals with the historical and literary context : the panorama of contemprary literatures in Brittany and the analysis of the controversial concept of Breton literature written in French. The second part develops our thesis about the existence of an inner Brittany, a fundamental mythical presence in Guillevic's work. Through the analysis of the relations established between the poet and the word, and by studying his geopoetic conception and the Breton elements of his poems (topography, civilization, vegetation, fauna and primordial elements), our conclusion affirms bretonnity as a not only obvious, but also essential component of Guillevic's poetic universe

Abstract:

Paris 4, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA040036.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This particular vision appears on the one hand in his theory of Bayân, (theory of meaning and communicationʿ wich leads to a static vision of language. Thus language becomes a stable reality similar to its extra-linguistic referenceʺ. The role of the human being using language in creating meaning is limited, and the linguistic concepts of convention, and extra-linguistic reference have no more place in the universe of Bayân. The particular value of language can be found also in his argumentative discourse in which language becomes an argument influencing the physical observable reality. The domains of what belongs to linguistics and what is extra-linguistic penetrate each other

The present dissertation aims to an approach of the teaching of Portuguese language on television, trying to find how possible is the contribution of this communication media in the sense to give a higher classroom dynamism and to excite the students for that subject. The TV show Afinando a L?ngua (roughly, putting the language in tune ), a Canal Futura feature, have as one of these main purpose be shown on the classrooms as a tool that could enlarge the possibilities of a subject often took as particularly difficult. Blocked by the traditional grammatical teaching, the Portuguese lessons have been for years pictured as hermetic and far from the Brazilian speakers reality. So, people create myths around the language that earns adjectives as complicate and inaccessible and that Brazilians can t speak the Portuguese really good, because it only happens in Portugal, the original country of the language. These myths start exactly because the teaching orientation take their basis only on the standard language, in fact just one of the language variations by the way, anywhere in the world dictated by ancestral rules, once produced in Portugal. The regular school don t accept the Portuguese variation as a natural fact for a huge country as Brazil, with almost 190 million people, regarding it as a wrong way of talking. The repression that follows the students from the early school days make them repel the language supposedly learned at school. In fact, they normally face it as something unfamiliar, different from the language that they have use to learn at home, from the family and neighbors Instead of giving new possibilities for the language learning, the television, a powerful audiovisual device, only reinforces the idea that everyone, in any life situation, should talk the standard Portuguese, turning its back to the learning acquired much earlier that any person reach the school. This conservative attitude brings almost no changes, between the shows that try to teach the idiom and the traditional Portuguese lessons, wasting valuable tools that could lead to the possibility to open the classroom to the outside world, and to the wider knowledge of the differences from each Brazilian region culture, a positive attitude that could much enlarge the cultural and linguistic students universe

Abstract:
The title Savage Ballet came into being because, so far as I articulate, it aptly describes the beauty and horror that are borne from combining art and instruction. Poetry, itself, is a ballet. And poetry, itself, is savage. It is a ballet of words carefully choreographed and practiced and spun into being. Poetry is the body politic of the ballet. It is beautiful and often fancy when the curtain rises, but behind the scenes and tucked into toe shoes is the instruction – the gnashing of teeth and blisters and broken nails. Thus, the savage side of poetry presents itself. And, may it also be said, graduate school is a savage beast. It wrestles and tests and knocks down to build up. And, if the dancer is lucky, they will rise.
