Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper aims to verify how the writings of Edgar Allan Poe and Machado de Assis had been influenced by the humanity' scientific and technological advances. The analysis proposes to reveal the sight of these two writers over the new possibilities that had been offered to the society, with the main objective of emphasizing the literature role in this process, considering that the human being is able to see the behavior of an entire period of time and consequently to himself through the literary work. This action of “looking back” and of “looking inside”, believes this research, allows him advance still more. In order to do that, the research takes some concepts as intertextuality and interdisciplinarity, extremely valued to the Comparative Literature, with the main objective of promoting relations between the different areas of knowledge – Literature and Science –, between the two different writers and, in the end, among the various literary genres that take part of the corpus of this study. After a brief view of the humanity history of scientific and technological advances development, the analysis of the selected texts is performed, endeavoring to emphasize and make the relation between the ways of thinking of these writers, proving that specific ideas about science and its advances really are in the literary production of each other. In the end, after the confrontation established during all over the research between the thinking and the position of the writers, the literature role in the humanity’s development and advance is discussed.

Abstract:
The present essay proposes a reflection on the work known in the italian tradition as Il Milione, which was written in Genoa, in 1298, by Marco Polo and Rustichello da Pisa. The famous work shared with the world the knowledge acquired by the venetian explorer during his stay in the Kublai Khan\'s court, the Great Khan of the Tatar Empire. In the first chapter of this research, some structural elements of the work are analyzed, such as the narrator, the co-authoring (this theme was considered essential for the study of the polo-rustichelian work only in the 20th century) and the genre question. In the second chapter, the liaisons between the work, the Literary Wonderful proposed by Tzvetan Todorov and the Medieval Wonderful proposed by Jacques Le Goff are explored.

This dissertation proposes a reflection about the fantastic mode in literature in the light of a fundamental operation of the cognitive process: the phantasms produced by the imagination. The investigation occurs through a comparative reading between two narratives Edgar Allan Poe s Ligeia (1838) and Mário de Sá-Carneiro s The Great Shadow (1915) , having by theorical support the studies from Remo Ceserani (The Fantastic, 1996), Irène Bessière (Le récit fantastique la poétique de l incertain, 1974) and Giorgio Agamben (Stanzas: word and phantasm in western culture, 1977), as well as Poe s critical reflections found in The philosophy of composition (1845), The poetic principle (1850) and Marginalia (1849) about the links between imaginary phantasms and poetical creation. Taking into consideration the significative diferences between the two texts either by the temporal distance or by the fantastic characteristics (more notable in Ligeia ) , this project asks how the root of the fantastic mode in literature can relate with the imaginative phantasms produced in terms of plot and, more specifically, enunciation. The hypothesis is that both Ligeia and The Great Shadow point to the creation of phantasms by the imaginative faculty as the responsable for the effects of the fantastic. This happens though the singularity of a central enunciative process: the spectral apparitions in both plot and in the multiple visions of the narrator in the poetic-phantasmatic discourse, marked by the crisis in representation. The comparative analysis reveals that the phantasm-fantastic relation manifests itself in both texts, although in different terms: in Ligeia , the procedures of the fantastic mode are everywhere spectres, doubles, projections between light and shadow and terror caused by gothic ambience; and, underneath this plan, lies the narrator-author s phantasmatic discourse. In The Great Shadow , on the other hand, excels the sensationist-phantasmatic narration on the form of a diary, leaving the plot and its phantasmagoric ambiance in second plan

Abstract: Reading and Literature are fundamental topics of the teenage contemporary work Tudo o que é sólido pode derreter (All that is solid can melt), authored by Rafael Gomes (2011). This novel, by its proposal and construction, is a starting point to rethink teaching and studies of literature as a curricular component, alerting us to the necessity of rescuing a more humanizing perspective of working the literary theme, as defended by the pedagogical practice of literary literacy, by Cosson, knowledge that helps us to look at the novel as a substantiation of these thoughts that are seen in the literary enjoyment, according to Candido, an instrument of liberation and emancipation of the human being that, deprived of it, takes the risk of having "its humanity maimed". So what happens in the novel is that Thereza is a young reader, newcomer to high school, who loves the classic works assigned to her by the teacher during the long-awaited literature classes. Unlike her classmates, Thereza longs to know canonical authors. As the avid reader she is, the girl is very interested in the narratives and poems that are being presented to her and in her imagination, based on the things she gets in contact with by her readings, starts dialoguing with these authors, their characters and conflicts. Even more than that: Thereza starts drawing parallels between her own life and the central themes of each work she reads. She seems to know in this way that the raw material of a literary text is nothing else than life itself and its meanderings and that is why we don't stay unaffected when we read a good story or a good poem. Reflecting on the possibilities of literature, with Lajolo, Cademartori, Todorov and others, the characteristics... (Complete abstract eletronic acess below)

This research is a case study entitled Literary reading and Foreign Language teaching: the Edgar Allan Poe short story in the process of the teaching and learning of the English Language in High School, and it stems from the line of research “Theoretical-methodological Conceptions and Teaching Conceptions”. Its objective is to investigate and to describe the rippling influences of a literary text (authentic material) as a didactic material. The guiding question to this study was: what are the contributions of a literary text (authentic materials) as a didactic resource to the process of teaching and learning of a foreign language as well as to students’ motivation? The corpus of the research was the short story “the Black Cat” by American author, Edgar Allan Poe. The collecting of the data happened during a didactic sequence (DS) with students in the 1st year of High School in a public institution in the city of Trindade- GO, their ages ranging from 14 and 16 years old. For the data analysis, two questionnaires were used, one initial questionnaire and a final questionnaire, and the activities carried out during the DS. This study was based on theories on the Short Story, Literature and didactic materials, using some of the following authors: (1994), Calvino (1990), Candido (1995, 2004), Campagnon (2009), Eco (2003), Duarte (2016), Leffa (1999), Pessoa (2009), Almeida Filho (2013), Almeida Filho e Barbirato (2000), amongst others. The analysis adumbrated that the practice of literary readings and the utilization of authentic materials in the foreign language classroom can motivate and contribute, in a positive way, to the teaching and learning process. Thus, we hope that this work can be a rich source of information to the pedagogic practices of other foreign language (FL) teachers, since there is not only the improvement of pedagogical practices, but also the value of theoretical reflection.

This dissertation examines the assumption that there is an expectation of the author to cause an effect on the reader. It presents it as part of the process of short story´s composition and like the principally element responsible for the qualification of the literary text. The work is organized into three areas: 1) short story aspects; 2) effect aspects; 3) fusion: the short story and the effect. It identifies short story's characteristics and the way theoretical texts analize the effect as its constituent element. The following texts were used as reference: Julio Cortázar, Ricardo Piglia, Aristoteles and Edgar Allan Poe, in addition with the theory of the effect of Wolfgang Iser

Abstract:
This paper presents a brief summary of the Skopostheorie proposed by Katharina Reiß and Hans Vermeer in Grundlegung einer allgemeinen Translationstheorie (1984) in order to assess the way in which the concepts of “communicative translation” and “equivalent translation” could be applied to a new translation of the cryptogram found in Edgar Allan Poe’s short-story, “The Gold-Bug” (1843). There are over twenty translations of the story into Brazilian Portuguese, but a new effort is nonetheless in order in view of the insufficiency of all existing translations with regard to the literary treatment of the special problems posed by the cipher and Legrand’s decipherment. The important role played by cryptology in the genesis, reception and later influence of “The Gold-Bug” is demonstrated by means of examples and arguments, and finally a new translation of the cryptogram is proposed with the aim of producing, in Brazilian Portuguese, a text with the same literary and ratiocinative qualities which eventually led to the tale’s immense popularity and Poe’s rise to the status of “genius” still in the 19th century.

Abstract:
Literary Field and Literature in Early Post-war Period Táiwān (1945-1949) Abstract The aim of this thesis is to analyze the literature and literary field of early post-war Táiwān (1945-49). This period, when Táiwān was politically reintegrated into China after 50 years as a Japanese colony, exerted a crucial influence on later historical events and developments. During these years, measures for the sinicization of Táiwānese society were implemented, but intellectuals also articulated views of distinctively Táiwānese as opposed to Mainland Chinese cultural features that were revivified by proponents of the Táiwānization (běntŭhuà) move- ment in the 1980s. As laid out in chapter 1, the methodology of the thesis is based on the theory of the literary field formulated by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The literary scene is understood as a structure created by relationships between various agents who aim to attain the dominant position in the field by accumulating the largest amount of symbolic capital. This is defined as prestige by Bourdieu but should be understood as a combination of prestige and political clout in the Táiwānese context, as this dissertation will argue. To occupy the do- minant position enables agents to define Táiwānese identity, culture, and literature (especially vis-à-vis China)....

Radoslav P a s s i a Aesthetics of Periphery and Border (To Selected Aspects of Periphery and Border Phenomenon in Slovak Literature of the 20th Century in Central European Context) Abstract The dissertation deals with selected aspects of periphery and border phenomenon in Slovak literature of the 20th century in Central European context. In the preliminary chapter Border the author focuses particularly on selected texts by Central European writers which are thematically set in the Eastern Carpathians. This radically multiethnic region is considered to be one of the relatively independent cultural areas of Central Europe by the author. Narrative perspectives of a stranger, outcast, migrant in combination with the themes of border and conflict between vernacular and alien are characteristic for the literary image of the Eastern Carpathian border area in the 20th century. The author looks at the way the literary appearance of this area is ideologically deformed in the works of individual authors. The writers (mainly Czech and Polish) who do not come from the Eastern Carpathian border area use characters of strangers to reflect on the relationship between the modern and the traditional. Autochthonous authors often make use of the stranger characters to depict the area's self-colonial efforts in relation to the...

The thesis Literary Relationship Between the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Thomas aims to provide a closer look at the relationship between the ca- nonical Gospel According to Mark and the apocryphal Gospel According to Thomas. The first part of the thesis serves as an introduction: After prolego- mena to the Gospel of Mark and Thomas, it focuses on several contempora- ry hypotheses of the literary relationship between the Gospel of Thomas and Synoptics, as discussed in more recent articles and monographs. Thereafter, the second part of the thesis presents three studies of Thoma- sian and Markan sayings of Jesus. Where necessary, an excursion is made to other synoptic writings. The second part uses the method of linguistic comparison in order to reconstruct the redaction history and thus explain the original literary relationship of these two ancient writings.

Published anonymously in Venice around the year 1530, it fell into obscurity for the next three hundred years. The only known copy was discovered in the middle of the 19th century in Vienna. Over the next hundred and fifty years this literary curiosity gradually became recognized as an integral part of the Spanish literary canon. Still, the research of La Lozano andaluza continues to feature blank spaces and unresolved issues, and is at the same time characterized by its conflicting nature and the absence of a generally accepted consensus. The introduction of the thesis summarizes and evaluates the state and condition of present-day research and outlines the general problems of the literary canon and its exploration through the concept of a philological field. The aim of the first part of the thesis is to present all verified editing data and to focus on those aspects of the work that have been neglected. These include the typography and iconography of the original publication, the narrative structure and the overview and nature of the general meaning-making principles. Delicado's peculiar use of language, his...

Abstract:
Basing on theoretical frameworks as symbolical sociology (concept of literary fields), speech representations and theories of performativity, the Ph.D. thesis focuses on the construction and representation of humanist communities of scholars in the Czech Lands during the 16th and 17th centuries. The author attempts to respond to the following questions. What are the peculiarities of the humanistic Latin mode of writing in this period in the Czech Lands? How did communication between scholars take place within the framework of the formalised discursive mode - so-called 'writing in excerpts'? Is it possible on the basis of the surviving source materials to distinguish several humanist literary fields in Bohemia? How did they function and what made them distinct? How were patronage relationships modelled and performed in humanist literary fields, heteronymous in their very principle? How in the process of humanist Latin communication was the scholarly community performed and how did individual scholars fashion themselves? These problems are thematised since 1550s as the first humanist long-term intellectual networks formed in the Czech Lands; the main attention is paid to the literary field of the Prague university, but also the literary production in literary circles in towns controlled by the university...

Abstract:
The goals of the present dissertation are twofold: 1) to bring back into the literary thought the notion of "world view", which has been largely discredited due to its abusage in the context of official Marxism during the socialist era, and 2) to affirm the usefulness of the notion of "world view" in the literary practice. The thesis is structured so as to meet the goals: the first chapter presents several probes of the usage of the phrase "world view" and definition discussions related to it. In this framework, the "scientific world view" from the socialist era is then confronted with a range of other definitions of the notion, such as F. X. Šalda's "view of life and world". In the second chapter, I present my approach to this notion, aimed at serving the purposes of current literary research. Firstly, I distinguish the notion of "world view" from the notions of "mentality" and "ideology", and secondly, following the research of The Worldviews Group (Brussels) I propose my own definition of world view. Since the Group does not deal with actual interpretations of literary texts, I make use for the intended purpose of an updated and slightly modified concept of Terry Eagleton, originally published within the monograph Criticism and Ideology (1976). What is essential is foremost to differ between a)...

Abstract:
Between Text and Context: The Theory of the Literary Field and Cultural Materialism as Models of Mediation Josef Šebek, Mgr. Abstract In his dissertation Between Text and Context: The Theory of the Literary Field and Cultural Materialism as Models of Mediation the author deals with the problem of mediation between literary text and its social context. He focuses on two important contemporary context- oriented approaches to literature: the theory of literary field, developed by Pierre Bourdieu, and cultural materialism, first formulated by Raymond Williams and further elaborated by Alan Sinfield and Jonathan Dollimore. He interprets these two theories as basic, mutually complementary models of mediation: the theory of literary field presupposes the existence of a (semi-)autonomous literary micro-world, whereas cultural materialism stresses the full integration of the literary text into the social context, the "social material process" (Williams). After an introduction outlining the problem, the author concentrates on Bourdieu's theory of the literary field, his "new science of works," and on contemporary post-Bourdieusian approaches (those of Alain Viala, Anna Boschetti, Jacques Dubois, Gisèle Sapiro, Pascale Casanova, Bernard Lahire, Jérôme Meizoz, Geoffroy de Lagasnerie) which employ, develop, and modify...

(English) The aim of this master thesis is to analyse the fiction of Tommy Wieringa, specifically in relation to the concept of the posture developed by Jérôme Meizoz. The distinction between the internal posture and the external posture is essential in this theory. Therefore, there can arise a tension between both images of the author (i.e., in the terminology of Daniël Rovers, between auteursfiguur and figuurauteur). This thesis is based on the question if this statement is valid in case of the work of Wieringa. Abstract:
Media are very powerful in present days, they are bringing conversational topics, they can easily manipulate our opinions. Media influence our thinking and our ideas about the world around us. Media influence are everywhere, media affect all areas of life including the religion. It is just religion what is one of the most important cultural factors. The religion is the source of values and morality from the beginning of human society. In order to religion could exist across the centuries, it had to adapt to the type of media which was dominant at the time. This dissertation discusses the link between media and religion, specifically about the connection between media type which is provider of religion and the nature of religion. This work also represents the most important church media and religious channels in the world and in the Czech Republic. The first goal of this work is to prove that religion still has big influence on society and that's the reason, why is religion in media so often. The second goal is confirmation of the technical determinism hypothesis (according Marshall McLuhan) in relationship between religion and media - it means confirm that the type of media presentation of the religion influences the religion character. To prove these hypotheses I mostly used media analysis of big...

Abstract:
The Auto da Barca do Inferno and Auto da Compadecida are fruits, each are in thier, of the profound christian sens and mentality. Both demonstrate in their texts diverse aspects like the preoccupation with the social religious experience, the hypocrisy, the vision of the man before the life and the death… etc. Both demonstrate whith refined doses of humor and sarcasm, social denunciations that can be considered, in their own ways, prophetic and poetic denunciations. These pieces also present precious aspects like the popular vision of existence and theological questions like: God, judgement, faithful work, salvation, condemnation, moral, the fragil condition of man, the acuser, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory... In this sense, both works are solid elements for the cultural sedimentation of the gospel, permithing that they may always be present in today´s society. Abstract:

1 Mgr. Alena Fry Dissertation Abstract Edgar Allan Poe in Czech Reception: Translation and Interpretation History The doctoral thesis investigates the history of Edgar Allan Poe's reception in Czech culture from the 1850s to the present. Its aim is to scrutinize how the author's image has been shaped and reshaped over the course of time by various book editions, interpretive approaches and key translations, and what socio-cultural, literary or individual factors contributed to these transformations. The thesis is intended to contribute to the understanding of the history of Czech literary translation and of Czech literature's intercultural affinities. Chapter 1 defines the research goal, presents the theoretical background and outlines the structure of the thesis. It reveals the inseparableness of Poe's image as the author and the man, i.e. the Poe "myth" that started developing during Poe's lifetime, and the necessity to also account for it when studying his Czech reception. Chapter 2 focuses on the period up to the early 1890s and examines the earliest interpretations. These were strongly influenced by R. W. Griswold's infamous "Memoir" and dwelt mainly on the circumstances of Poe's life. Furthermore, the chapter provides an overview of the first prose and poetry translations which were occasionally...

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to do a comparative analysis of four Romany life-stories in prose from different parts of the world and identify features which may justly be called characteristic of Romany writing. The comparison of Victor Vishnevsky's Memories of a Gypsy, Mikey Walsh's Gypsy Boy and Gypsy Boy on the Run, Andrej Giňa's Paťiv. Ještě víme, co je úcta and Irena Eliášová's Naše osada yields valuable insights into how Romany writers construct their identity and to what extent their current work relates to the existing literary genres. Because of Romany studies' multidisciplinary nature, the extensive introduction lays the theoretical foundations for the analysis. I proceed from the characteristics of Romany studies in general in part 1.2 to the way it was practised during my undergraduate years in Prague as opposed to the Western tradition (part 1.3). Using a case study of the schism Romany studies are currently facing in the Czech Republic, in part 1.4 I attempt to illustrate the more general epistemological challenges the field has been grappling with between essentialist/primordialist and radical constructivist views. As there is a definite scarcity of theoretical literature conceptualising Romany writing, in part 1.5 of the introduction the existing body of work is assessed and found...
