Abstract:
This essay seeks to contribute to ongoing debates about disciplinary decolonization in Comparative Literature by urging scholars and students to return to the literature and theory of twentieth-century anticolonial liberation struggles. I begin by considering the relationship of Comparative Literature as it is currently practised in the metropolitan academy to earlier projects of cultural decolonization, focusing particularly on the contrast between the depoliticized ‘worlding’ of the discipline and the more radical and purposeful comparative praxis demonstrated by the Afro-Asian Writers' Association's literary journal Lotus (1968–91). I then turn to examples of literary criticism by two major fiction writers, theorists and party activists with ties to Lotus: Ghassan Kanafani (Palestine, 1936–72) and Alex La Guma (South Africa, 1924–85). Putting their work into conversation enables us to challenge the distance from organized struggle that most contemporary criticism maintains, while also developing our understanding of the conditions, principles, and tactics of what Kanafani famously called adab al-muqāwama, or resistance literature, a concept that any attempt to decolonize Comparative Literature cannot do without.

Relying on some of the ideas of Yuri M. Lotman on “semiosphere”, the dynamics and dialogue between “centres” and “peripheries”, as well as on my own ideas on cultural symbiosis expounded in my essay books A Call for Cultural Symbiosis. Meditations from U (Toronto, 2005) and Kümme kirja Montaigne’ile. “Ise ja “teine” (Ten Letters to Montaigne. ‘Self ” and ‘Other’, in Estonian: Tartu, 2014; in English, 2018) and inspired by the recent foundation in China of the International Association for Ethical Literary Criticism, I will try to meditate on the interrelation of Comparative Literature, World Literature and Ethical Literary Criticism both in theory and in the practice of teaching and researching literature at universities and high schools. The main purpose is to look at the ways how a “self”-centred practice of literary research and teaching (formalistic as well as sociological approaches, restricting World Literature to the Western mainstream, or just dealing with one’s own national literature, avoiding its comparative contextualization) could be gradually replaced by a symbioticdialogical treatment of literature, capable of providing our activity with a firm and solid ethical dimension, something that would definitely strengthen the position of humanities in the world academia.

The article will suggest that the texts and ways of reaching some materials and perspectives in Argentina, remains at a national level. It is important to notice that in order to read criticism and theory regarding Latin American literature, Spanish from Río de la Plata separates at some point the fields. In that regard, one of the greatest assets and achievements of Argentinian literary research concerns the relationship between politics and fiction. In connection with this it might be asked how we can think of Argentinian literature without linking it to the social discourse? How can we think of the comparative field of Latin-American and Argentinian literature as one academic area of studies? In our view, comparatism seems to be one of the loneliest areas of studies in terms of the fields of theory, fiction and criticism. We thus suggest that in Argentina, literary research and criticism in general are strictly concerned with only one option: the national culture. Thus, exclusively, western theoretical frames are chosen to read literature and comparative perspectives are mostly applied to European studies. That is why I insist on the fact that comparative literary research is not represented institutionally at all.

Abstract:
Text linguistics is a designation of any work oflanguage science devoted to the text as the primary object of enquiry (Dijk 1979). Following Beaugrande (1995), 'text' is viewed here as "an empirical communicative event given through human communication rather than specified by a formal theory". This communicative event rests on a "dynamic dialectic" between the "virtual system" oflanguage and its realisation in the form of an "actual system" emanating from selections made by the text producer (Sa'Adeddin 1995, 1998). These selections are effectuated in terms ofthe expectations and presuppositions (Bloor and Bloor 1991) of the target world audience (see Sa'Adeddin 1987a, 1990, r991) and/or schemes that the producer has on them. A priori, the field of Comparative Literature is as legitimate an area of investigation for the text linguist as it is for the lettrist. This is particularly tnte given the fact that literature is a form of linguistic performance with special status and value, par excellence. As translation is, in the final analysis, a tex:t lir1guistic a_ctivity across langU:a..ge com.munities and a prin1e tool for the comparatist, it is feasible to see it as a bridge between the two disciplines. Being essentially Translation-based, Comparative Literature ;;;n a. l: the bilingual comoaratist in a oaiiicular form of ·.innate' translation, structured on a complex process of interpretation and re- interpretation (see Sa'Adeddin 1990). Translation Criticism involves all the constituents which contribute to text-production and text experiencing (Sa'Adeddin 1995), and which need to be observed in quality assessment, if the comparatist is to proceed with maximum confidence. The intuitive heuristic checklist suggested here may provide the initial grounding for a systematic text analysis procedure, which would be of special relevance to the comparative lettrist. .

Abstract:
The article deals with the problem of the genre, which is studied in the theoretical-critical and historical-literary aspects. The results of the comparative typological analysis of texts containing judgments about the future of literature give ground to talk about the literary forecast as an independent genre and thus update the existing classifications. The genre carriers are the topic, problems, tasks of the critic, as well as the structure of the text, the image of the literature. The future of literature as the main theme of forecasting determines the procedure for specific critical world modeling. Tasks of the critic are to offer scenarios for the development of literature; evaluate contemporary literature from the perspective of the future. The structure of literary forecasts includes reflection on the task; finding of a “fulcrum”, allowing to create the image of the future; a picture of the future (or the present in the future perspective); the ending. Critics verbalize fear of forecasting. The fears of critics are connected not only with the uncertainty of the future as a subject of comprehension, but with the unacceptability of the status of a prophet, which is being outlived at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries on the wave of postmodernism and the crisis of literary centrism. Creating images of the future, critics draw on the figure of the reader, their requests, life in its socio-cultural dynamics, unfinished tendencies. The genre analysis is supplemented by a study of the content of literary forecasts, which allows to get an idea of literary critical thinking at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries, the diagnoses which criticism gives to the modern literature. Criticism of the turn of the XX–XXI centuries demonstrates an enduring trauma from the loss of its former status (of both criticism and literature), from the loss of the position of intellectual prose and poetry. This perceived “lack” in the present defines the picture of the future.

Abstract Starting from Matthew Arnold’s “The Function of Criticism at the Present Time” (1865), this essay traces the importance of reading US literature and culture in comparative terms. Paying special attention to the work of Stuart Hall, Annette Kolodny, and F. O. Matthiessen, it argues that forms of structural opposition should be seen as embedded within American literature. Rather than understanding the subject itself in merely oppositional terms, it advocates antipodal and planetary critical perspectives that serve effectively to reposition the field within a wider context, one framed in various ways by biogenetic and environmental issues that exceed national boundaries. It concludes that while there are acute dangers for political leaders in a narrowness of vision, the same thing is true for literary criticism, where an undue narrowness of scope can be intellectually debilitating.

Abstract The modernist epistemic disconnect from the “medieval Islamic republic of letters,” Muhsin al-Musawi argues, is attributable both to the incursion of Enlightenment-infused European discourse and a failure to read the import of the republic’s significant cultural capital. This article explores the effects of Eurocentric incursions on transformations in literary value in two of the earliest known works of comparative Arabic literary criticism: Rūḥī al-Khālidī’s Tārīkh ʿilm al-adab ʿind al-ifranj wa-l-ʿarab wa-fiktūr hūkū (The History of the Science of Literature of the Franks, the Arabs, and Victor Hugo, 1902) and Aḥmad Ḍayf’s Muqaddimah li-dirāsat balāghat al-ʿarab (Introduction to the Study of Arab balāghah, 1921). I employ the various theoretical formulations of the decolonial school of thought, primarily Walter Mignolo’s coloniality/modernity complex, in tracing these epistemological shifts in literary value and focus on the internalization of Eurocentric critiques of Arabic literary capital. I also discuss the politics involved in such processes, presenting a decolonial perspective on these modernists’ engagement with their Arabic critical heritage.

Reverend Father Professor Amechi Nicholas Akwanya is one of the towering scholars of literature in Nigeria and elsewhere in the world. For decades, and still counting, Fr. Prof. Akwanya has worked arduously, professing literature by way of teaching, researching, and writing in the Department of English and Literary Studies of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. To his credit, therefore, this genius of a literature scholar has singularly authored over 70 articles, six critically engaging books, a novel, and three volumes of poetry. His PhD thesis, Structuring and Meaning in the Nigerian Novel, which he completed in 1989, is a staggering 734-page document. Professor Akwanya has also taught many literature courses, namely: European Continental Literature, Studies in Drama, Modern Literary Theory, African Poetry, History of Theatre: Aeschylus to Shakespeare, European Theatre since Ibsen, English Literature Survey: the Beginnings, Semantics, History of the English Language, History of Criticism, Modern Discourse Analysis, Greek and Roman Literatures, Linguistics and the Teaching of Literature, Major Strands in Literary Criticism, Issues in Comparative Literature, Discourse Theory, English Poetry, English Drama, Modern British Literature, Comparative Studies in Poetry, Comparative Studies in Drama, Studies in African Drama, and Philosophy of Literature. A Fellow of Nigerian Academy of Letters, Akwanya’s open access works have been read over 109,478 times around the world. This paper attempts to reconsider the nature and function of the ‘spiritual’ dimension in literary texts and in literary study in the context of the present state of the discipline of literary studies. The present era is often defined as a ‘post-secular’ era, one in which themes of spirituality and mysticism are increasingly noticeable in literary works. The paper argues that to maintain its relevance to contemporary writers and readers, literary criticism has to (re-)address these themes in a concrete and effective way. The paper recommends a comparative approach to the discussion of spirituality and mysticism in contemporary literature and literary criticism. In order to carry effective analytical potential, this approach, the paper emphasizes, has to be developed from specific spiritual traditions. The paper first discusses the disciplinary crisis literary studies have always been exposed to since their inception as a discipline of study in academic institutes. It then reviews the current state of the discipline and describes how the discipline came to be dominated by scientific and social approaches. Finally, it suggests the reinstitutionof the ‘spiritual’ element in literary study as a way out from the state of crisis in the discipline of literary studies. The paper thus attempts to strengthen the disciplinary identify of literary studies while exploring interdisciplinary aspects of the study literature.

While the study of world literature is often seen as escaping the boundaries of eurocentrism—albeit with the need for constant revision and self-critique—a truer overcoming would involve another sort of anthologization, namely, of world theory and criticism. World literature should go beyond being a reified collection of translated texts, to become an exploration and comparison of the different ways of thinking about literature and aesthetics in different parts of the world. Barbara Cassin’s Vocabulaire Européen des philosophies: Dictionnaire des intraduisibles provides a possible model in this regard. The untranslatability of critical terms from different traditions is generative of new meanings due to the repeated efforts to translate and to compare non-synonymous terms with each other. This essay examines the untranslatability and comparability of several different terms from Asian aesthetic traditions.

The first travel books appeared as works based on the motives of travel and adventure. The motive of travel has gone through phased stages in Uzbek folklore and classical literature and appeared in the form of national-modern travelogues, embodying artistic, aesthetic, social, educational, educational and intellectual content. The travelogue genre is a relatively little-studied area of literary criticism. But this genre is widespread in the world, including European and American literature. Accordingly, scientific studies of this genre were developed in the literary criticism of those regions in connection with much more ancient times. The elucidation of the historical process of development, the principles of development and the poetic features of the works of travelers is intended to substantiate the role and significance of our national travelogues in revealing the new possibilities of this genre.

Abstract This article discusses the work of the early Irish comparatists Hutcheson Macaulay Posnett, who in 1886 published the first monograph in English in comparative literature. By bringing into discussion Posnett’s lesser-known journalistic publications on politics, the essay argues that his comparative project was importantly determined by the contemporary challenges of British imperial politics and by his own position in the British Empire. The article investigates several aspects of Posnett’s work in the context of British colonialism: his understanding of literature and literary criticism, his perception of the English and French systems of national literature, and his understanding of world literature and classical literature. Recognising the imperial and colonial context of Comparative Literature additionally highlights the development of literary comparisons, which have marked subsequent discussions in the discipline.

The article is dedicated to the outstanding philologist Kim Kirillovich Vasin. He made a significant contribution to the development of the main issues of Mari literary criticism of the 1950–1980s. His works have not lost their significance at the current stage of development of regional science. A great merit of the researcher is the study of the creative interaction of Mari literature, the role of Russian literature in the emergence and formation of Mari literature, the biography and work of repressed writers: the founder of Mari literature Sergei Chavain, the poet and film actor Yivan Kyrlya and others. The desire of Kim Kirillovich Vasin to establish patterns, identify characteristic trends in the development of Volga literatures and show their interaction in the historical process was of particular importance. The scientific heritage of K. Vasin created the basis for the further development of national literary criticism in the field of comparative studies.

Abstract An innovative and dynamic way of practicing and thinking about translation emerged in 1950 s Brazil and became entangled with German literature. However, due to linguistic barriers, this constellation remains almost invisible today. The main protagonist of this translation discourse was Haroldo de Campos who, together with his brother Augusto de Campos, translated texts from world literature into Brazilian Portuguese. This article argues that in the translation and criticism of a poem by Christian Morgenstern, the work of Haroldo de Campos as a philologist and scholar of Comparative Literature becomes especially palpable. Beginning with an example from Morgenstern’s collection Galgenlieder, the article illustrates how Campos translated the German vanguard movement into the Brazilian context and reflected on the similarities of both literary currents. The translation also depicts Haroldo de Campos’ understanding of both Comparative Literature and criticism, in general, favoring translation, adaption, and reception over the praise of the ‘original’. In following the traces of the poem (“Ein ästhetisches Wiesel”) through Brazilian literary theory (also in the work of Roberto Schwarz and Anatol Rosenfeld), the article argues in favor of its relevance for the discipline of Comparative Literature.

The purpose of this essay is to deepen philosophical and critical issues related to the ‘literary Ego’ by articulating the conceptual and theoretical premises of a contemporary corpus. To date, the subject of my study lacks a relative critical literature which is epistemologically developed starting from the philosophical component. In the essay, a thematic reading of the materials relating to the literary subject was actualised, which led to the development of an equally comparative-formal and theoretical-literary discourse. The article is devoted to the review of the prospects of multidisciplinary media-cultural studies in modern comparative literature studies towards comparative cultural studies and transmedial naratology. Comparative cultural studies syncretically combine the concepts of comparative literary criticism with the study of culture in the aspect of media-cultural studies, not limited to literature, but also various arts, mass media, computer games, etc. Literature is understood only as one of the media among other media. This is a transdisciplinary turn in comparative literature studies. Comparative naratology, and later transmedial naratology, in turn, is seen as a new discipline on the verge of literary comparativism, intermedialism, and naratology. The typology of intermedial forms of naratology in the classifications of Werner Wolf, Marie-Laure Ryan, and Jan-Noël Thon is discussed. Modern studies of various medial forms of narratives, which may also be presented in cinema, painting, graphic arts, ballet, comic books, and other mediums, and the discovery of the intermedial properties of narratives, lead to a rethinking of the fact that all narratives have a purely linguistic nature. Modern naratology as a separate discipline tends to go beyond purely literary narrative and transfer the concept of narration to other types of arts. Intermediate methodologies have already entered into comparative literature studies and have been successfully used in the analysis of literary works. It is about syncretic theoretical and methodological synthesis of three branches of art studies — naratology, intermedialism and literary comparativism, cross-disciplinary narrative studies. The combination of narrative and intermedial approaches to literature is becoming one of the most urgent tendencies of modern both naratology and the theory and practice of intermediality.

Cervantes’ influence in Albanian literature has not been studied much by Albanian literary criticism, but there is still a lot of interest in finding the traces that literature leaves in another literature, revealing the reciprocal communication between them. Cervantes’ influence with Don Quixote of La Mancha the work of the Albanian famous writer Dritëro Agolli, The Rise and Fall of Comrade Zylo, which conveys the actualization of two archetypal characters of the work of Cervantes in the Albanian literature. The study of Cervantes’ grotesque occupies an important role in the analyses the Albanian literary criticism makes to Quixote. This literary figure is closely related to the creativity of many Albanian writers in the years of dictatorship, and grotesque is considered as a direct influence of Cervantes. Don Quixote of La Mancha is not considered timeless only because the fact that after centuries it continues to be published, read, translated into new languages, but most importantly, we think that literature does not stop being influenced by Don Quixote of La Mancha.

 Based on the analysis of causality and reasonableness of arguments of such literary scholars as Shakir Selim and Shamil Alyadin, this article attempt to determine the ethnocultural code of the Crimean Tatar literary criticism. The author applies the approach of methodological pluralism, as well as hermeneutical, logical, historical-genetic, comparative-typological, phenomenological, and psychological methods. This allows considering various perspectives of the aforementioned literary scholars upon the variants of critical analysis of the artistic heritage of the classic of Crimean Tatar literature Memet Nuzet. The article outlines the basic principles of literary criticism, declared by Shakir Selim and Shamil Alyadin, as well as their dependence on the ethnocultural code of the Crimean Tatars. The scientific novelty of this research consists in the attempt of carrying out a comprehensive hermeneutical analysis of Shakir Selim’s literary-criticism work “About Shamil Alyadin, Charyks and the Pocket Knife” through the prism of methodological pluralism in the aspect of ethnocultural code. The article examines the historical development of comparative Jewish hermeneutic studies of the Gospel of Matthew starting with the 17th century. The research pays special attention to the stages of formation, to obstacles and their overcoming, and to the nature of the development of comparative works. It introduces a comparison of two parallel traditions in these studies — Christian and Jewish. The main methodological approaches of Christian and Jewish scholars come from historical criticism and philology. They transcend religious boundaries and bring academicism to comparative studies. However, later historical criticism leads to a delay in the development of comparative Jewish studies due to the problems of anachronism, since rabbinic literature originates several hundred years after the New Testament, and therefore is not suitable for synchronous comparison. Another obstacle to the development of comparative analysis poses the philological principle of only one textual meaning. Jewish hermeneutics presupposes many meanings of the sacred text, which contradicts the principle of a single meaning. A revolutionary breakthrough in comparative Jewish hermeneutics occurs in the middle of the 20th century, thanks to the use of a literary approach that is not bound by the strict rules of historical criticism and the philological principle of a single meaning. Renee Bloch suggests the use of Rabbinic literature for the study of Christian and intertestamental literature, and even of the Bible itself, even though such a comparison is anachronistic. The cultural approach helps to see the uniqueness of the cultural contribution of the exegete and to overcome religious obstacles to comparative research. The article suggests a comparative Jewish hermeneutics of the Christmas story of the Gospel of Matthew.

Translation Policies of Rocznik Literacki [The Literary Annual] (1932– 1938) and the Perception of Foreign Literatures in the Periodical from the Perspective of World Literature The aim of this paper is to identify and unpack ideological strategies manifested through translation criticism in the Rocznik Literacki, a Polish literary review published in the 1930s, in the context of the notion of World Literature. With the help of the toolbox from comparative literary studies, translation studies, and cultural studies, the article traces the dynamics of socio-political tensions in Poland in the 1930s. It also presents an overview of the reception of foreign literatures in the Polish periodical. The sections of the annual devoted to works translated from various languages reflected the reviewers’ urge to establish norms for translation and literary market that were apparently solely linguistic in nature. In fact, they reflected the discussions on the role which particular cultures (should) play in the multilingual and divided state shortly after it regained independence. The paper discusses the particularly complex representation of ancient (Latin) and Jewish (Yiddish) tradition in Rocznik Literacki.

How might we now make sense of Comp Lit’s ‘literature’ half amid a contemporary mediascape in which literature no longer possesses the cultural centrality it once enjoyed? To probe this question, I turn to scholarly efforts from a century ago to make a case for reading literature within the university classroom by formulating ‘criticism’ as a field of study. I focus on the eminent Chinese writer Lao She 老舍 (1899–1966), who taught in both Chinese and British classrooms, and who unexpectedly sparked the introduction of ‘criticism’ in the Chinese academy through his translation of a little-known textbook for criticism by the American professor Elizabeth Nitchie (1889–1960). Drawing upon Lao She’s conviction in the critical capacity of literature, I argue that returning to ‘criticism’ – as Lao She articulates it in his pedagogical lectures and his profound yet overlooked short story ‘Filling a Prescription’ ( Zhuayao 抓药, 1934) – can help build a justification for the continued importance of teaching literature’s reading. Amid institutional pressures to ‘rebrand’ Comparative Literature, this article ultimately suggests that there may be reason yet for the discipline not to abandon its focus on literature too hastily.

The main aim of this paper is to illuminate the positive reception and influence of Hemingway’s translated work in the Albanian-speaking world. On the whole, Hemingway’s reception in Albanian literature and culture has largely been overlooked and it thus requires more profound attention and consideration. Hence, this paper will attempt to fill up a large vacuum that existed so far in Ernest Hemingway’s reception in Albanian literature and culture.“Jeta e re,” one of the most reputable literary journals in Kosova, published several journalistic and literary critiques on Hemingway written by various Albanian and international authors throughout the 20th century. Using a critical and comparative literary approach and by referencing these published prefaces, introductions, articles, reviews, etc. mainly by Albanian authors, this paper details and analyzes the research, journalism, and literary criticism published in “Jeta e re” regarding Hemingway’s works. The paper concludes that Hemingway’s literary works and masterpieces were translated and published frequently and were received with warmth and enthusiasm, leading to Hemingway becoming one of the most admired authors among Albanian readers.

This article examines concentration of art around literature that resulted from Soviet cultural policy of 1930’s. The key role in this process was played by literary criticism. Based on the material of literature it attempted to develop universal criteria, which could later serve for assessing any types of art. Some of the authors defended the distinctness of approaches to various arts, but unification in accordance with literary pattern was more seemed more effective. In this context, an illustrative example is cinematography – a young and institutional but yet not well-established art without its own theoretical framework. The main research method is the comparative analysis of rare periodical materials. The scientific novelty of this work consist in circumstantiation of the widespread cultural processes of Stalin’s USSR: focus of all arts on the literature, but at the same time, expansion of the panorama of literary criticism and self-reflection. If in the 1920’s, film directors were actively engages in the theory of cinematography, in the 1930’s it became prerogative of the critics.

Although religion faces many challenges, such as clashing with modernity and becoming the object of criticism, religion has a thousand lives. One Indonesian novel created by Achdiat Karta Mihardja entitled Atheis (1990) pictured this religious phenomenon. Therefore, this article discusses Islam, secularism, and humanism in the Novel. This is qualitative research with the literary approach that combines the comparative literature theory of American schools and sociology focused on the sociology of modernity and religion. This research finds the novel as a criticism and reconstruction of Islam that is compatible with secularism and humanism in general, though in certain parts they are different. Further, the author of this novel reveals a good and proper Islam based on the text, first, it is concerned not only with the afterlife but also the present and here-ness real life. Thus, he criticizes the Islamic pattern which believes in superstition. Second, the Islamic form according to humanism and moderat feminism as the core of Islam is a public benefit and blessing for the universe. This research concluded that the novel's criticism is in line with the criticism in the scientific sociological Islamic literature.

The paper conveys information on the current state of Czech and Slovak comparatist thought as regards its methods, thematical orientation and institutional base. Czech and Slovak comparative research has always been a complementary whole embracing, on the one hand, the tradition of Slavonic studies grounded in structural aesthetics (S. Wollman) and, on the other, the endeavour to develop the theory of interliterarines and interdisciplinary study of the world literature (D. Ďurišin). Much to our regret, the disruption of this “symbiosis” at the turn of 1990s resulted in losing contacts with the rest of the world. Therefore the prime objective of the newly established Czech-Slovak Association of Comparative Literature, based in the Institute for World Literature SAV, Bratislava, is to encourage Czech and Slovak literary research. The constitutive members of this association already in 2013 participated in the 20th World Congress of Comparative Literature in Paris (AILC/ICLA) so as to present the English version of their World Literature Studies journal under the title Comparative Literary Studies as Cultural Criticism. The first joint conference of Czech and Slovak comparatists (Slavica Litteraria 18, 2015, No. 1) was held in Bratislava in February 2015. For our next event, the 21st AILC Congress in Paris 2016, Czech and Slovak scholars, together with their foreign colleagues, have prepared a joint panel presentation Old and New Concepts of Comparative Literature in the Globalized World. It examines the meaning of an author of literature writing, the spiritual, the aesthetic dimensions and the creative force of compositional literary writing, and finally the goal of writing, as elaborated by these two authors. In Kierkegaard’s sense, the quality of writing is mainly tied up with the religious mind of a person, while to Liu, the quality of writing is related to the moral quality of a person. The following examination demonstrates how Kierkegaard and Liu complement and enrich each other in the understanding of authorship and writing.

One of most arguable and observable social phenomena is gender inequality which is based on feminism thoughts. Considering how literature may portray human’s life along with its values, this study is purposed to elaborate and compare how feminism thoughts and gender inequality take place in various literary works. Based on the importance of feminism thoughts and gender inequality in cross cultural literature, then there is a necessity to conduct a comparative literature study which focused on feminism thoughts. This study took four kinds of literary works, namely drama, prose (short-story), movie, and poetry. Feminism approach as sociological approach was applied in this study altogether with comparative criticism and content analysis method. This study discussed how feminism thoughts got more supports and encouragement as the century progressed. By comparing literary works from 20th and 21st century, several important findings can be drawn, namely (a) feminism thoughts are getting stronger along with the progression of century, (b) feminism thoughts always oppose gender inequality as both are always found as binary oppositions in literary work, (c) both feminism and gender-inequality live through human’s values and repetitive actions, (d) personal and familial values are crucial in order to develop feminism thoughts and gender-inequality in an individual, and (e) the change of values, especially social and cultural values can bring changes in both feminism and gender inequality phenomena.

"Aware of the literary heritage that was spreading and renewing itself on the northern shores of the Mediterranean, the Arab literary figures of the Nahḍa did everything possible to welcome this new literature that emanated from the European Enlightenment. Indeed, translation was the ideal instrument to address this new nineteenth-century literary reality. However, the sole translation of texts did not help to achieve the objectives pursued. In this article, the problem of Arab cultural identity is approached from a linguistic-literary perspective. Emphasis will be placed on issues related to paratextual phenomena, language and translation criticism, the translation pact, and comparative literature. Within this context, the translations of some prominent experts in the field of literary translation will be studied, such as al-Ṭahṭāwī, al-Manfalūṭī, Wadī‘ and Sulaymān al-Bustānī. Finally, the first Arabic version of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables will serve as a practical case through which the linguistic and cultural effects that literary translation had on contemporary Arabic language will be examined."

Fantasy as a genre has a long and complex history of formation. The history of fantasy is as old as humanity itself. Its legitimate predecessors are a fairy tale, a novel and a fable. Fantasy aims to build up not only the realm of dreams, but also seeks to establish itself as a significant and indispensable system. The literary fantasy genre usually starts with obvious or concealed subtext about the existence of several realities and moves in the direction of awakening heroes’ previously unknown parts of themselves. The fantastical genre, having greater freedom in creating an image of the world, has the opportunity to defend and prove “in practice” the importance of eternal humanistic values. Many scientists disagree not only in defining fantasy as a type of literature, but also on its components. In order to determine similarities and differences between the existing theories of fantasy division, the main types of fantasy worked on by Kovtun, Shidfar, F. Mendlesohn and others are described using descriptive, comparative and other literary methods. All the scientists studied have been doing their research for the past hundred years, which gives a wide field for analysis. During the review of existing theories, it was revealed that the main elements of fantasy move from one classification to another, changing only the names.

Compared to the attention that children's literature scholars have paid to the construction of childhood in children's literature and the role of adults as authors, mediators and readers of children's books, few researchers have made a systematic study of adults as characters in children's books. This article analyses the construction of adulthood in a selection of texts by the Dutch author and Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award winner Guus Kuijer and connects them with Elisabeth Young-Bruehl's recent concept of ‘childism’ – a form of prejudice targeted against children. Whereas Kuijer published a severe critique of adulthood in Het geminachte kind [The despised child] (1980), in his literary works he explores a variety of positions that adults can take towards children, with varying degrees of childist features. Such a systematic and comparative analysis of the way grown-ups are characterised in children's texts helps to shed light on a didactic potential that materialises in different adult subject positions. After all, not only literary and artistic aspects of children's literature may be aimed at the adult reader (as well as the child), but also the didactic aspect of children's books can cross over between different age groups.

This study focused on analyzing Minahasa famous folklores called Toar Lumimuut and Sigarlaki Limbat. Despite just being folklores in the past, due to their popularity, they have been preserved officially in writings and have been considered as local treasure of Minahasa. In order to give them better spot in revitalization due to globalization that give more pressure to the local culture, it is necessary to take specific action to preserve and revitalize them. This study was conducted by gaining data through library research and interview, then analyzed by literary criticism called world literature by David Damrosch. There were five Minahasa local people who participated in the interview. Both of them are males while the other three are females. It is found that both folklores suit the three characteristics to be called world literature. They both are available in several translations, they are refracted in other literary worlds around the world, and they are popular and their scripts have been digitalized by official governments. The acts of comparing these two literary works through world literature perspectives are considered necessary in conveying to the Minahasa young generation and even globally that the local folklores can be classified as world literature as well and becomes the local and national treasure that should be appreciated, respected, and reserved.

Abstract:
The problem of this study lies in evaluating the methodological approach of Yuli Eichenwald (1872—1928) as a theatrical critic and theorist, specifically his writings on Shakespearean productions both in Russia and abroad. Known primarily as a literary critic, Eichenwald also wrote about theater, but his works in this area have been largely unexplored. The aim of this study is to shed light on Eichenwald's principles of theatrical criticism. The material used consists of little-known articles by Eichenwald on theater theory and Shakespearean productions from 1903 to 1927. The research employs hermeneutic and comparative methods. The findings reveal that Eichenwald demonstrates a literature-centric position in his articles on theater, according to which theater is merely an illustration of literary works. He increasingly uses productions as a pretext to discuss Shakespeare, often without mentioning the actors or directors. Eichenwald’s perception of theater as a mediator, as an auxiliary device between the play and the reader, leads to his rejection of the concept of directorial theater and the denial of the director as the author of the production. The authors conclude that Eichenwald’s theatrical criticism is a logical outcome of literature-centric judgments about theater, from Aristotle to Hegel, where theater is considered as part of literature.

The article will focus on the life and fiction of Mukhtar Auezov, as well as on the course of writing and translating into Russian the epic of the novel “The Way of Abai”, reflection in the literary, cultural, artistic criticism of the state of Russia, which is our neighboring state, about the media space of the world. Russian publication of the novel “The Way of Abai”, written by the great man M. Auezov, is hotly discussed in Russian literature. A theoretical analysis of the views of Russian literary critics on the professional requirements of literary criticism was also carried out. To date, this topic is one of the most relevant, which has been little studied. In recent years, especially during the period of independence, Russian literary studies have been considering various scientific studies and historical cognitive works, new materials based on other archival documents, new approaches to texts, opportunities for new examinations. Numerous research papers and scientific books, historical documents, etc. have been published about Mukhtar Auezov's “The Way of Abai”. Currently, up-to-date information in social networks, electronic channels, M. Auezov was considered in comparison with scientific conclusions, historical data related to the established Abai studies. Mukhtar Auezov is a classic of Kazakh literature in his research work. The evaluation of the poet's artistic image in the novel “The Way of Abai”, given in Russian literature, was analyzed in a comparative form from today's point of view.

Abstract:
The relevance of the article is a comprehensive analysis of the problem of the historical development of the concept of «author» in literary studies as a multifaceted category of personality. Attention is drawn to the direction of development of the author's theory in literature in the periods of Romanticism, structuralism, formalism, poststructuralism and postmodernism, a comparative, expert analysis of the fundamental theoretical conclusions and basic principles of authoritative representatives of this period is carried out. In «neorealism», which brought a new impetus to literary criticism, over the same period of time in the USA, Europe, Russia and our country, the author's theory developed and interpreted in different ways. The logical connection of these theories with each other was weak and even had contradictions in some issues. In addition, the analysis reveals that the American-English «new criticism», the European-French «criticism of consciousness» and the Soviet classical paradigms have their own characteristics and differences. The consistency of А. Baitursynov's conclusions in relation to the author with the studies of other scientists in the world literature was analyzed. Modern trends in the development of the author's theory were also identified and an expert analysis of the works of scientists in this field was carried out. As the main components that make up the concept of «Author», the categories are defined – «the image of the author», «the position of the author», «the intention of the author», innovative ideas in this direction are analyzed. The authors of the article, relying on the historical pattern in the development and decline of scientific theories and literary schools, formulate that at present there is a «period of theoretical crisis» in science related to the author's theory.
