While sarcasm provides cutting, usually funny comments, irony lets writers build nuanced meanings that contradict literal interpretations. This paper shows how sarcasm and irony improve narrative depth and reveal underlying realities by means of analysis of a few chosen works from English, Russian, and Uzbek literature. <em>This article is devoted to some difficulties of literary translation. The translation of fiction in almost any case requires the use of imagination from the translator, but it is necessary to master this skill to an adequate extent so as not to misrepresent the author&rsquo;s work reproduced on paper. It happens that the original text seems meaningless, but this is not the fault of the author at all, but the lack of competence of the translator. Therefore, in order to avoid such ambiguities, the literary translator should make every effort to better understand the author&rsquo;s intention.

This paper is wholly designed to discuss the use of Irony in two famous classic short stories: Rip Van Winkle and The Story of an Hour. The two stories used Irony as a literary device in many positions to add a sense of humor and surprise in the reader's perception. Irony could take three shapes, as literature usually explains. Irony could be verbal, situational, or dramatic. Two types of these appeared in the two stories as literary devices and added a sense of weirdness and humor as expected when using Irony. Irony is widely applied as a useful literary device. This paper stresses the point
