Abstract:
Classifying literary genres has always been methodologically confined to philological methods and what is commonly known as Vector Space Clustering (VSC). The problem has been exasperated with the widening gap between computational theory and traditional analysis of literary texts. Towards finding a solution to this problem, the current study utilizes a synergetic approach that brings together two established methods. First, a computational model of genre classification is drawn upon for identifying concept-based, rather than word-bound, topics, where the representation of texts is secured via the ‘bag of concepts’ (BOC) model as well as the sense-restricted knowledge and meaningful links holding between and among concepts; relatedly, the two model strands of explicit semantic analysis (ESA) and ConceptNet have enacted text classification. Second, a contextual lexical semantic approach (CRUSE, 1986, 2000) is employed so that the contextual variability of word meanings and concepts can be tackled within the confines of the target literary genres classified. The findings of present study have shown that the current composite approach of computational and semantic models has resulted in improved performance in classifying literary genres, especially with respect to delineating the links between each cluster’s document-members and generalizing about their unifying genre. Further implications have emerged from the present study, namely, the benefits reserved for digital libraries and the process of archiving, where literary-text classification has proven problematic to both users and readers in many cases.

Abstract:
In the past, there was a restriction in the literary genres in the theories of literature. After the development of the theories of literature and criticism this was seen less the genres. The genres got benefit from each other from different ways. Especially through interference of literary genres. This led to the development of the genres and interfering each other and a new genre came up that consists of the previous genres. SHERKO BEKAS was an experienced poet that was different and invented a new style of writing literary genres. This made him to have his own style to mix between the genres to create new genres such as poetic prose, verse novel From this perspective, this study tries to analyses the style of interfering the genres in the poems of the poet. The study consists of two sections: the first one is to introduce the concepts of literary genre and the interference of literary genre. The second one is about the styles of interfering literary genres in the poems of SHERKO BEKAS. In the end, the results and the list of references are available.

Abstract:
The term genre in the literary literature means (type, style, category, or literary element). genres include all the artistic frameworks and templates that poets and writers use to shape their thoughts, consciousness and emotions. In ancient times (classical age) the boundaries between literary genres are clearly defined on the basis of the purity of genres. In general, genres had enjoyed a kind of independence. However, in the later stages, the boundaries between genres were crossed since they merged, went into each other and lost their sanctity and independence. For example, a genre of epic or free verse poetry is a combination of the characteristics of two or more genres within one new literary genre. In addition, the four main genres of poetry, lyric, epic, drama, didactic form the general structure of the base of poetry, each of which has several different genres. This feature, of course, existed in the most publications of the 'Kurdistan Newspaper' in Tehran.

Abstract:
In the development process and social movements, the literary genres do not exist independently but have interaction with each other. Novels are capable of performing genres interaction because “the novel allows to put into it many different genres, including artistic genres (short stories, lyric poems, epics, speech plays...) and non-artistic genres (literature in daily life, rhetoric, science, religion...)”[1]. Novels with traditional writing style about contemporary Vietnamese history (prominent writers such as Nguyen Xuan Khanh, Vo Thi Hao, Nguyen Mong Giac...), the interaction among literary genres is considered as the most common form. Typical forms of genre interaction in novels with historical themes are the interaction between short stories and novels, poetry and novels... Genre interaction expresses the writer’s sense of creativity and experience in the innovation requirement of literary life practice.

Abstract:
Most contemporary playwrights acknowledge that Shakespeare’s dramas are for use as raw material to be assimilated into contemporary mould, not to be revered strictly as untouchable museum pieces. Being the model of all dramatists, Shakespeare had a great influence on English theatre, his plays are still performed throughout the world, and all kinds of new, experimental work find inspiration in them. This paper investigates the intertextual relationships between William Shakespeare’s King Lear (1606) and Edward Bond’s Lear (1978). The main objective of the paper is to explore the extent to which Bond manages to use Shakespeare’s King Lear as an intertext to convey his contemporary version of Shakespearean classic. Two research questions are tackled here: first, how does Shakespeare’s King Lear function as a point of departure for Bond’s contemporary version? Second, to what extent does Bond deviate from Shakespeare to prove his originality in Lear? The paper reveals that Bond’s manipulation of intertextuality does not mean that he puts his originality aside. He proves his originality by relating the events of the old story to contemporary issues which in turn makes the story keep pace with modern time.

Abstract:
Within the literary domain, genres function as fundamental organizing concepts that provide readers, publishers, and academics with a unified framework. Genres are discrete categories that are distinguished by common stylistic, thematic, and structural components. They facilitate the categorization process and improve our understanding of a wide range of literary expressions. In this paper, we introduce a new dataset for genre classification of Russian books, covering 11 literary genres. We also perform dataset evaluation for the tasks of binary and multi-class genre identification. Through extensive experimentation and analysis, we explore the effectiveness of different text representations, including stylometric features, in genre classification. Our findings clarify the challenges present in classifying Russian literature by genre, revealing insights into the performance of different models across various genres. Furthermore, we address several research questions regarding the difficulty of multi-class classification compared to binary classification, and the impact of stylometric features on classification accuracy.

Abstract:
The recent speculative turn in literacy, English education, and other ELA-related fields has brought renewed energy for redesigning English teaching and learning through genre awareness. However, extant work on speculative genres of reading, writing, and literary study assumes that ELA teachers are prepared or, more fundamentally, aware of these genres and their unique features. Addressing this gap, this article presents a single intrinsic case of Carlos, a queer man of Color and bilingual elementary teacher, as he cultivated genre awareness through an interactive approach to genre pedagogy through restorying. Based on a rhetorical genre studies approach, Carlos’s case demonstrates how English teachers might expand their genre repertoire to include speculative genres and integrate them into their classrooms. This article concludes by advocating for the integration of speculative literacies into English teacher education, doing so to disrupt normative realities tied to white supremacy and homophobia within the field.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper was to analyze the impact of the genre on the use of cohesive devices in the literary and legal texts. To achieve the aim the following objectives were specified: to determine the typical patterns of the use of cohesive devices in literary and legal texts and to identify similarities and differences of the use of cohesive devices in the texts of different genres under investigation. The approaches to the research were quantitative and qualitative as well as content analysis method was chosen for the analysis. The research demonstrated that the genre has an evident influence on the density and distribution of cohesive devices. It also demonstrated that most often used cohesive devices in fiction belong to the group of reference and in legal documents to the group of lexical cohesion. The amassed data showed that the literary genre demonstrates all possible types of substitution and ellipsis whereas in the legal genre this type of cohesive devices has very low frequency. In addition, conjunction was identified as the least commonly employed type of cohesive devices in fiction as well as in the legal documents. Cohesive devices are important in all types of communication as they signal to the addressee the connections between the sentences of the text; therefore, the further studies are required to determine the influence of textual genre on the choice of cohesive devices in the genres that were not thoroughly investigated before.
Abstract:
Eleven short fictions are introduced with a discussion of genre. Genre is looked at as being a matter of degree ranging from absolute prose on one end of the spectrum to a very specific form of poem with conventions of its own such as the Shakespearean Sonnet on the other end of the spectrum. The analysis is made in an appeal for the short-short story (or sudden fiction) as being a genre of its own. It is argued that regardless of what category a fiction may fall into (and some of the distinctions seem arbitrary), that what is most important is success at conveying a meaningful experience.

Abstract:
Extract: [...]Intriguing as they undoubtedly are, the early sixteenth-century lists of books in the Earl of Kildare’s library may well have inadvertently helped to lull scholars into visualising a rather idealised picture of language balance in multilingual late medieval Ireland. The lists reflect a society in which the four languages, Irish, English, Latin and French, vied as scholarly media and where the outcome in the Earl’s library was a four-way photo-finish. The number of volumes in each of the languages was recorded as follows: Latin, 34; French, 35; English, 22; Irish, 20 (Mac Niocaill 1992: 312-314). But of course the multilingual contact situation in Ireland had always been quite dynamic, both at vernacular and at scholarly levels, following the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169. Although French continued to be employed in official documents into the second half of the 15th century, it had already ceded its vernacular role to English in the towns of the colonists prior to the drawing up of the Statutes of Kilkenny in 1366. These Statutes, composed in Norman-French, the primary language of English law at the time, provide an earlier snapshot of the language situation within the areas under English jurisdiction, as they sought to compel the colonists to desist from adopting Irish as a community vernacular. Ironically, no mention is made of Norman-French in the Statutes themselves. It is clear that what was at issue was a contest for supremacy between Irish and English as the principal vernacular among the colonists.[...]

Abstract:
We intend, as it is traditionally done in cultural and gender studies, to connect literary genres and gender by analyzing Angelica Gorodischer’s narrative work (1928), an Argentinian contemporary female writer. This feminist female writer undoes normative models in order to question the very logic of categorization, in literary genres as well as in heteronormative social representations. Indeed, the social field and the literary canon are defined by the naturalization of a domination scheme. Indeed, the literary canon, linked with the social field, is built from domination schenes, which become invisible and out of history thanks to a naturalization process. The categorization logic of this process thus strengthens the feeling of a hierarchical organization. We analyse the social and literary fields in which this female writer evolves. She represents a rupture and questions the legitimacy of multiple centres while keeping a peripheral position. Then, we study more precisely the way she considers norm and literary genres by analyzing the generic modulations she uses in her writing, starting from a specific generic background. We then focus on the inter or transgeneric process the feminist female writer’s texts implement to undo, in a post-modern logic, categories and hierarchies. By doing so, she deviates from the canon, creating anamorphosis process which bring out the limits of genres and disturb the reader’s expectations, renewing this canon

Abstract:
Analysing the body often entails a series of – often qualitative – dichotomies [nature vs. culture, discourse vs. novel self-expression], and invariably intertwines with language. This comparative study centres on “embodiment” mechanisms [Judith Butler], and broaches them through the prism of sexual differences, in books by two contemporary Austrian authors: Evelyn Schlag and Elfriede Jelinek. Their writing self-evidently criticises language but likewise unveils deep divergences that denote different conceptions of male and female. This work favours a heuristic approach, which critiques the feminist theories from the 1970s and 1980s before homing in more specifically on the textual foundations of culture [Kulturwissenschaften] in general, and their implications for gender studies in particular. This study zooms in on the process of producing text about the body. The method is at the crossroads between an analysis of gender [psychoanalysis, deconstruction and metalanguage] and of literary genres [novels, plays, poetry, etc.]. It probes strategies to cement, twist or eliminate the generic frontiers that each of these authors’ poetic angles follow, from a wider perspective than the strict correlation between femininity and logos subversion. It simultaneously questions the effects of literates handling text with a view to “re-semantising” the feminine body in a non essentialist manner

Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030113.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims at studying, under the perspective of literary genres and forms, Alfred Jarry’s novels : Gestes et opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien (posth. 1911), Les Jours et les nuits (1897), L’Amour absolu (1899), Messaline (1901), Le Surmâle (1902) and La Dragonne (posth. 1932). It shows how these largely overlooked works, labelled as « novels » by their subtitles, are actually the result of transformations, hybridization and mixings of genres. First, Alfred Jarry, who began his literary career under the auspices of symbolism, plays a role in the evolution of fiction itself, by creating anti-illusionist works where dreams prevail, and which are set in an original temporality, with a non-linear structure and evanescent characters. Then, these novels are also hybrid texts: they resort to argumentation, giving birth to didactic digressions coloured with “pataphysique”, while theatricality brings about dialogues and characters which are influenced by the dramatic genre and the imaginary world of the performing arts. Finally, Alfred Jarry’s novels are contaminated by poetry at a time when the latter tends to pervade all the literary genres and when free verse emerges. Verse poems appear in the novels, and prose itself turns to poetic expression, by using images and a specific rhythm. Therefore these fictional works can be seen as the laboratory of a new generic space, undergoing a deep transformation at the turn of the nineteenth and the twentieth century

Abstract:
The submitted study addresses the topic of the current state of the opinion journalism and its genres in the Slovak periodical press. The author draws attention to the question of classification of the opinion journalism of a rational and emotional type from the genre categorization point of view and, simultaneously, reflects on its application in the present journalistic practice. This brings a certain rate of confrontation between the defined theoretical premises and their subsequent practical (non-)implementation. The main objective of the study is to clarify the presence of genres of analytical and literary opinion journalism stated by media theory in the environment of the Slovak periodicals. Presentation of the basic terminological axis and the related explication of journalism genres included in the opinion journalism constitute the secondary objectives of the paper. For the purposes of achieving the set objectives, the author uses methods of logical analysis of text in combination with discourse analysis. Similarly, she predicts the evident presence of the phenomenon of hybridization in the Slovak journalistic practice.

The theme aboutreader formation in Brazil is recurrent in different debates throughout history, considering its importance for the construction of a literate society. This study aimed to draw the reader's profileaged 6 to 10 yearsof the literary text, making an interface with the influence of the Digital Age in the choice of textual genres (fairy tales, legends, fables, among others) and in the formats of reading adhered to by students. Therefore, we aimed to identify the different styles of reading, as well as the ideological aspects inherent to this phenomenon, based on the frequency and formats of reading, namely: on screen and on paper. As a methodology, we carried out a bibliographic survey and applied exploratory research to private school teachers, in a city in the interior of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The survey data point to the great challenge of waking up children's appetite for the universe of reading in the Digital Age. Of the interviewed teachers, most defend the importance of literary reading, however most prefer videos and movies to reading.According to the teachers' testimony, children who like to read develop more creativity and criticality. The research revealed that the option for the act ofreading in detriment to other possibilities of access to culture receives a lot of influence from the encouragement of the school and the family. The sampling highlighted the importance of the literary ambience. We hope that the studywill contribute to the thought of new strategies to encourage reading, by portraying the students' inclination towards audiovisual language

Abstract:
This paper innovatively analyzes cultural intersections between the literary oeuvres of modern Italian writer Cristina Campo and the topics pertaining to ecocriticism, together with concomitant digital aspects thereof. The paper explores transversally across her work the elements of eco-literature, as well as interdisciplinary convergences in the light of environmental science with a particular focus on the envisionment of diachronic examples and other external intertextual elements in the contemporary era. The interest of this paper is in theoretical exegesis and correlated eco-poetical descriptions of Campo's writings, but also in analogous articulation concerning the global sphere of comparative literature. Likewise, the paper thematizes such compositional and expressive literary characteristics of Campo's opus highlighting idoneous ecopoiesis in the same epoch present in the philosophical domain, as well as in social disciplines and natural sciences, thereby creating a multicultural plurality of perspectives. Furthermore, it induces conceptual and compositional branching regarding literary genres by focusing from an ecopoietic standpoint on Campo's environmentally themed essayism and all other narratives, including the protoliterary nature of eco-related epistolary notes. The lyricism is envisaged too, by taking into consideration literary implications of ecopoetry, also in relation to actual and potential cultural models (Emily Dickinson, William Carlos Williams, Thomas Stearns Eliot, Marianne Moore etc).

In this paper it’s the first time the authors have reviewed linguistic literature (2008-2022) devoted to the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. The purpose of the paper is to review linguistic literature and identify the current state of the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. Materials and methods. On the basis of this purpose we reviewed 42 scientific papers published in 2008-2022 and representing the results of linguistic research of literary and electronic hypertext. For our study we used an analytical and descriptive method, which is traditional for linguistics and allows us to solve the tasks set in our paper. Results. A review of linguistic papers has shown that hypertext is a relevant subject of linguistic research. Scientists propose various definitions of this concept; consider it as a “special information and communication environment”. Many studies are devoted to literary (fiction and non-fiction) hypertext, however, a much larger number of papers are devoted to various aspects of electronic hypertext, including electronic fiction hypertext and electronic hypertext of some genres (news genres, online advertising, social network and online diary community as well as websites). We consider that it is the electronic environment where hypertext is implemented in all its functions. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used as a theoretical basis for further theoretical and practical study of various aspects of literary and electronic hypertext.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this research is the social roles and stereotypes of femininity in the almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu». The aim of the study is to conduct a systematic analysis of gender stereotypes of femininity in the literary almanac. The article employs the following methods: theoretical – for studying gender theory, stereotyping, and their application in the analysis of the content of the periodical; systemic-structural analysis – for conducting a systematic analysis of the social roles of femininity in the almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu»; structural-typological – for studying the content and structure of the literary almanac; descriptive method - for interpreting women’s roles and stereotypes. Main findings. The role of gender stereotypes in representing women in the media texts of contemporary Ukrainian writers in the pages of the periodical almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu» has been elucidated. A systematic analysis of feminine social roles, including the beautiful woman, the businesswoman, the happy woman, the sex symbol, and the wife-mother, is presented. The social roles and stereotypes of femininity in the literary almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu» are interpreted according to the classification of G. Kovalova and V. Danilyan. Conclusions. In the almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu», entrenched perceptions regarding women’s model appearance, their frivolity and accessibility, professional inferiority, sexual objectification, competent housekeeping, maternal duties, and the pursuit of illusory «female happiness» in the form of marriage, family, and children are used. However, a trend of feminist rise is observed, where the pages of the magazine describe women’s career successes, self-actualization, participation in military actions, etc. Significance. The analysis of gender stereotypes, both femininity and masculinity, in Ukrainian literary-artistic periodicals is important for the development of the contemporary media sphere, as such research will encourage editorial teams to direct media content towards gender balance and gender equality. Key words: gender stereotypes, social role, femininity, journal, literary magazine, media text.

Islam, Asiya, and Preeti Manchanda. Gender Inequalities in Digital India: A survey on digital literacy, access, and use. Digital Futures at Work Research Centre (Digit), January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.20919/mcuu2363.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper reports the main findings from a survey on gender inequalities in digital literacy, use, and access among youth (18-25 years) in three parts of India – Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. In addition to gender, the survey was attentive to other inequalities too in its enquiry about the location (urban/rural), caste, household income, and education level of the respondents. This paper largely presents inequalities of gender as they intersect with urban/rural location since other variables, while important, yielded smaller numbers that need further careful analysis. The survey was informed by various contemporary developments – global growth in the use of digital technology for education, employment, and everyday lives; Covid-19 pandemic that has accelerated this growth; and the Digital India programme that aims to empower citizens through digital skilling. The survey, then, set out to explore the nature and implications of social inequalities in a society moving towards digital empowerment. The survey findings reveal overwhelming dependence among young people on smartphones for internet access and that entertainment and social media are the top uses of the internet. The survey also finds that women, particularly in rural areas, are less likely than men to exclusively own smartphones. That is, the smartphones that women have access to tend to be ‘household phones’, shared with other members of the family. This has consequences for the time and purposes that women are able to use smartphones and internet for. Based on these findings, the paper proposes avenues for further research on intersectional inequalities in digital literacy, access, and use. It also suggests policy interventions to maximise the potential of digital technology for education and employment, with specific attention to gender inequalities.

Yatsymirska, Mariya. MODERN MEDIA TEXT: POLITICAL NARRATIVES, MEANINGS AND SENSES, EMOTIONAL MARKERS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11411.

Full text
Abstract:
The article examines modern media texts in the field of political journalism; the role of information narratives and emotional markers in media doctrine is clarified; verbal expression of rational meanings in the articles of famous Ukrainian analysts is shown. Popular theories of emotions in the process of cognition are considered, their relationship with the author’s personality, reader psychology and gonzo journalism is shown. Since the media text, in contrast to the text, is a product of social communication, the main narrative is information with the intention of influencing public opinion. Media text implies the presence of the author as a creator of meanings. In addition, media texts have universal features: word, sound, visuality (stills, photos, videos). They are traditionally divided into radio, TV, newspaper and Internet texts. The concepts of multimedia and hypertext are related to online texts. Web combinations, especially in political journalism, have intensified the interactive branching of nonlinear texts that cannot be published in traditional media. The Internet as a medium has created the conditions for the exchange of ideas in the most emotional way. Hence Gonzo’s interest in journalism, which expresses impressions of certain events in words and epithets, regardless of their stylistic affiliation. There are many such examples on social media in connection with the events surrounding the Wagnerians, the Poroshenko case, Russia’s new aggression against Ukraine, and others. Thus, the study of new features of media text in the context of modern political narratives and emotional markers is important in media research. The article focuses review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding. Modern political texts are most prominent in genres such as interviews with politicians, political commentaries, analytical articles by media experts and journalists, political reviews, political portraits, political talk shows, and conversations about recent events, accompanied by effective emotional narratives. Etymologically, the concept of “narrative” is associated with the Latin adjective “gnarus” – expert. Speakers, philosophers, and literary critics considered narrative an “example of the human mind.” In modern media texts it is not only “story”, “explanation”, “message techniques”, “chronological reproduction of events”, but first of all the semantic load and what subjective meanings the author voices; it is a process of logical presentation of arguments (narration). The highly professional narrator uses narration as a “method of organizing discourse” around facts and impressions, impresses with his political erudition, extraordinary intelligence and creativity. Some of the above theses are reflected in the following illustrations from the Ukrainian media: “Culture outside politics” – a pro-Russian narrative…” (MP Gabibullayeva); “The next will be Russia – in the post-Soviet space is the Arab Spring…” (journalist Vitaly Portnikov); “In Russia, only the collapse of Ukraine will be perceived as success” (Pavel Klimkin); “Our army is fighting, hiding from the leadership” (Yuri Butusov).

Full text
Abstract:
Gender gaps in ?nancial literacy are pervasive and persistent. While most studies explore why women know less, these gaps might also re?ect differential behavior in providing responses in surveys. Women might be more likely to be uncertain, or men might be more likely to choose an answer when uncertain, while women might tend to opt for “I do not know”, leading to imprecise measures of the gender gap in ?nancial literacy. We test for the effectiveness of three interventions to reduce the frequency of “I do not know”, in a randomized control trial online survey administered to 6,000 participants. The standard survey, our control group, includes the possibility of answering “I do not know”. The three treatment arms exclude the “I do not know” answer, offer incentives for correct answers or inform survey takers of the existing gender gap in choosing “I do not know”. All interventions are very effective in reducing the frequency of “I do not know”. The information is most effective for women, while the incentives are most effective for men. As regards gender gaps, only the provision of information significantly reduces the gender gap in choosing “I do not know”, as well as the gender gap in ?nancial literacy.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.

Celero, Jocelyn, Melissa Garabiles, and Evangeline Katigbak-Montoya. Creating Gender-Responsive Literacy Programs toward Health and Social Security Systems Inclusion of Filipino Migrant Domestic Workers in East Asia. Philippine Institute for Development Studies, December 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.62986/dp2023.36.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to examine the gender-responsiveness of the current health care and social protection systems in the Philippines and East Asia. It also seeks to assess the level of health and social security systems literacy of Filipino migrant domestic workers (MDWs) in Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, as well as the Philippines. This study resulted in the development of survey tools that included seven measures on the systems literacy of Filipino MDWs. Four of the seven tools were about Philippine government agencies whose mandate includes providing health and social security protection to Filipino MDWs. These agencies are the OWWA, SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG Fund. The other three tools focused on the laws and policies regarding health care and social protection for Filipino migrant domestic workers in three destination countries or territories, namely, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, and Japan. Findings from the interviews with government agencies and NGO leaders in destination areas, as well as pilot surveys, suggest that while still in the destination countries, Filipino migrant domestic workers sometimes tend to disregard Philippine-based programs and policies that seek to protect their health and social welfare. As a result, the level of literacy in Philippine systems fluctuates. In contrast, the literacy level in receiving country systems tends to improve the longer Filipino domestic workers live and work in East Asia, gradually alienating them from the Philippine systems. Yet, despite the availability of health and social pension benefits in the receiving context, Filipino domestic workers who are aging, part-timers, and low-wage may face greater vulnerabilities and barriers to attaining systems literacy than other female migrant workers. The study recommends integrating gender into existing health care and social protection policies to ensure that they match the specific experiences of different categories of female migrant workers. It further suggests that the Philippine government must periodically update and strengthen the promotion of services and programs on various platforms. To raise the level of Filipino MDWs’ systems literacy in Philippine health and social security, the government must strengthen awareness of their policies and services and improve coordination between the Philippine consulates and embassies regarding labor and legal systems in destination countries that may have implications on the portability of healthcare and social protection programs for overseas Filipino workers.
