This case study follows the process as four high school students curate literary sources in preparation for historical arguments. Results indicate that the use of literary texts prepared students to build nuanced historical arguments by helping them identify subtexts and divergent perspectives through their research. The underlying ELA skills complemented the literacy demands of historical argumentation.

Abstract:
The article focuses on one of the crucial issues of academic commentary on the second part of Aleksey Tolstoy’s trilogy, The Road to Calvary, the novel The Eighteenth Year, namely its text sources. The research establishes that the work relies on various and diverse materials. For example, the main storyline of Vadim Roschchin’s time in the Volunteer Army, the course of the first and second Kuban campaigns, the battles of the White and Red Armies in southern Russia, as well as, partially, the depiction of the leaders of the White movement was based on Anton Denikin’s The Russian Turmoil, mainly the second and third volumes titled The Struggle of General Kornilov. August 1917 – April 1918 and The White movement and the struggle of the Volunteer Army. In his novel, Tolstoy also used P. Tocheniy’s essay August 1918 events at Nezhinschchina, which was published in the Ukrainian Istpart journal Chronicles of the Revolution in 1926; the memoirs of N.V. Gerasimenko, published in 1922 under the title Makhno in the historical and literary anthology Historian and Contemporary; and the Notes on the 1918 Czechoslovak revolt with blueprints of the military campaigns, which were found in the writer’s archive and are either an abstract review of an unknown eyewitness account or the eyewitness account itself.

This article reexamines the life narrative of Võ Thị Sáu, a young female martyr known throughout Vietnam. It brings together close intertextual readings from varied sources, including archival documents, literary and cultural works, historical scholarship, museum exhibits, and social media to scrutinize the veracity of factually suspect stories and reconstruct a new, more historically sound narrative of her life. This article moreover presents new ways of using rumor in historical research—both as a potential source in empirical historical research and as a means through which historical memory is constructed and reproduced in contemporary Vietnam.

Thomson, I. "Mozart's opera Die Zauberflote : an analysis of the historical and literary sources of the libretto." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.503064.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation contains an analysis of the libretto of Mozart's Die Zauberflote. The analysis was contemplated with apprehension, given that so much has already been written about the opera. But the work was prompted by two factors. Firstly, by a longstanding concern that the libretto contains classical, literary, historical and philosophical references which have not been referred to in previous explanations of the opera. There was a sense in which the opera may have been well documented but perhaps not well understood. Secondly, and consequentially, the study was fuelled by the magnitude of the challenge to understand how these unacknowledged references fit together to create what the librettists considered to be their "purpose". This dissertation, then, develops many new analytical themes and throws fresh light on the purpose of the opera and the methods by which it was developed. Many people have helped me in a variety of ways during this study. I am particularly grateful to my Supervisor, David Chadd, Head of the School of Music at the University of East Anglia (UEA), Norwich, for his constant support and advice, and to my two examiners Professor Julian Rushton at Leeds University and Anthony Gritten at UEA. I am also grateful to Simon Waters at UEA and Ian Biddle (formerly UEA but now at Newcastle University) for their help during an earlier M.Mus. study which unexpectedly led to the research presented here. I am particularly grateful to Edvina Franceschini for her assistance, comments, encouragement and hospitality throughout the period of this study. And I am indebted to Prebendary Michael Moreton, for reading draft text and offering helpful comments on theological and other references, and to Angela Biston for helpfully commenting on several occasions on my draft text. I also wish to acknowledge the help of a number of people on whom I have relied for specific advice on a miscellany of subjects. Their contributions may have been partial, because none were aware of the objectives of my study, but their help was nevertheless important. I am particularly grateful to Anna Plattner and Bettina Kann, Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna; Frieder Hepp, Director, KurpJiilzisches Museum, Heidelberg; Clare Rider, The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London; Diana Weber, Stadtarchive, Heidelberg; Daniel Pailthorpe, Principal Flautist, English National Opera, London; Cesare Poppi, Deputy Director, The Sainsbury Centre, UEA, Norwich: Joe Taylor, Head Ranger, Sports and Parks Division, City of Coventry; Ineke Fijan, the Erasmus University, Rotterdam; Anne Mitchell, Woburn Abbey; Catherine Baron, Assistant Curator ofthe Royal Collection; Bernhard Overbeck, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich; Claire Leach, Voltaire Foundation; Sylvia Morris, Shakespeare Memorial Library, Stratford-uponAvon; Richard Palmer, Lambeth Palace Library, London; Lynda McLoed, Sotherby's, London; Mr. Ellis, Astrological Association, London; The Astrology Shop, London; Clive Wilkins-Jones, Norfolk and Norwich Millenium Library, Norwich; Ingrid Lamey, Schwetzingen Castle; Lucia Underhill, Kimbolton School; Omar Samy, Al Ahram Newspaper, Cairo; Ingrid Horning, Utrecht; Julian Roberts; and Jean Rafferty. Finally, I am grateful for the unfailing assistance of countless anonymous staff in many libraries and museums. Staff at The British Library, where necessarily most of my research was undertaken, have been exceptionally helpful. But I have also received considerable help from staff at the UEA library; the Bodleian; the House of Lords Record Office; the Egypt Exploration Society; the National Portrait Gallery Heinz Archive; German Historical Institute, London; London University Library; the Wellcome Library; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the Warburg Institute Library; Christie's Images; Coventry City Library; Warwickshire Records Office; the Ashmolean Museum; Centraalmuseum, Utrecht; the National Maritime Museum; the Historische Museum, Berne; the Offentliche Kunstammlung, Basle; the London Park Lane Mosque Library and the Vatican State Library.

Jarc, Jaka. "Rights and obligations : conceptions of social relations viewed through the treatment of possessions in the Biblical poems of Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Junius XI." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/19349.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis examines social conceptions framing rights and obligations by reviewing how possessions are used and exchanged in the poems of MS Junius XI. I identify several major additions to the scriptural source material of the poetic narrative where the poems present a unique treatment of possessions in a social environment. These poetic additions often feature novel combinations of events and even entirely new sub-stories. In reviewing these departures I focus specifically on possessions and examine how they frame the rights and obligations within social interactions. Focusing on objects of social exchange enables the discussion of the literary narrative to relate to secondary historical literature on possessions as well as social conceptions. This has not yet been done for the poems of Junius XI. This thesis is divided into four thematic chapters ordered from the most tangible to the most abstract: moveable objects, landed possessions, degrees of possession of people, and abstract notions of authority framing social interactions tied to holding and exchanging possessions. In chapter two moveable possessions will be discussed in relation to social status, cultural identity, exchange and hierarchy. The third chapter will examine the interplay between the allegorical and practical notions of land possession. The fourth chapter will discuss social hierarchy framed as a range of rights and obligations discussing to what degree people are themselves treated as possessions. The discussion will examine what types and levels of relative personal freedom is detectable in the Junius XI poems. The final chapter will amalgamate findings and issues of the previous chapters by examining how the exchange and treatment of possessions impact various types of authority which frame social interactions, hierarchies and values.

Thesis, Örebro universitet, Institutionen för humaniora, utbildnings- och samhällsvetenskap, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-91339.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses source criticism from a critical perspective which encompasses its challenges, demands and possibilities for teaching practice. The questions guiding the core of this research are the following:1) What differentiates people’s activities in the process of evaluating sources? 2) What characterizes an effective practice in critical evaluation of sources? 3) Which criteria, factors and strategies might be important to consider in order to have a successful source critical methodology that promotes the improvement of critical thinking when analysing information and news? The studied materials include data from one survey and 54 semi-structured interviews. The interviews, analysed by using a methodology based on Grounded Theory, led to the development of a concept, critical source criticism (CSC), which define a broad perspective for the analysis of sources, and a related theoretical model (the CSC-model) aimed to be used for didactical purposes. The outcomes from this research suggest that different forms and levels of knowledge in history and social studies (in theory and practice), have a critical impact on the way we interact with information. The results also suggest that the combinations of theories and methodologies, alongside an emphasis on pluralism and multiperspectivity, can turn source criticism into an effective practice to achieve several educational goals. Subsequently, these results, are considered in the development of the proposed model in this thesis. The CSC-model developed in this study could be suitable for the analysis of information such as news, in planning of source-critical based teaching and in source critical discussions. I argue that this methodological structure, can be applied to facilitate the development of critical thinking, as well as other skills and abilities essential for democratic participation. Also, to explore factors that could favor or hinder the development of a critical attitude, from the students, towards the information coming from a variety of sources The information obtained through a questionnaire, classroom observation, group interviews with students, and interviews to the teachers, allowed us to elaborate 3 types of students, in relation to their level of critical literacy when they work with historical sources: those who ‘read the lines’, those who ‘read between the lines’ and those who ‘read beyond the lines’. Aspects such as: their ability to differentiate fact from opinions, identify intentionality and ideologies in the sources and elaboration of discourses or alternative proposals were evaluated. It was concluded that using a variety of historical sources in different formats, using online sources in real time and comparing them, favors the development of students’ critical literacy. Methodological strategies such as debates and discussions about controversial themes or characters of history using different sources, work in research groups with information sources assigned by the professor and plenary to present their results and guide a process of elaboration of audiovisual or digital products about characters or historical episodes, could contribute to the same objective.

In light of increasing mandates to incorporate close reading of primary source historical documents at the elementary level, this study explored the reading difficulty level of the US Constitution with preservice elementary teachers using a traditional cloze assessment procedure. While best practice pedagogy of social studies has long included thoughtful reading of primary sources, new language arts guidelines situate the analysis of primary documents within formulaic quantifiable frameworks, often problematic to the pre-service teacher. With implications for reading and social studies, this paper explores several relevant issues to both pre-service teachers and the elementary classrooms they will teach in.

Wallach, Jennifer Jensen. "Remembering Jim Crow: The literary memoir as historical source material." 2004. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI3136790.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a two-fold project. The first half is a methodological examination of how memoirs can be used as instruments of historical understanding. The second half applies this methodology to the study of several memoirs written about life in the American south in the first half of the twentieth century. Memoir is a peculiar genre which straddles the disciplines of literature and history. Currently the field of autobiography studies is dominated by literary critics. However, there is nothing inherent about the genre dictating that this should be the case. This dissertation analyzes memoirs from a historical perspective. I argue that insights drawn from life writing have the potential to greatly enhance our historical understanding. I broach several topics including the problem of defining autobiography, the disciplinary proprietorship of the memoir, the relationship between history and theory, and the linkages between the historical study of memoirs and interdisciplinary conversations about historical memory. I describe the nature of historical reality, arguing that the individual thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and misperceptions of each historical agent are constitutive of the historical reality of a particular moment. Memoirs capture the entire universe as it appeared from one acknowledged perspective. Furthermore, skilled, creative writers are especially adept at capturing the complexity of a past moment. Authors of literary memoirs draw on the aesthetic power of literary language and on literary devices such as metaphor and irony to powerfully portray particular historical moments. I apply these ideas to an examination of memoirs about life in the segregated American south. I analyze memoirs written by African Americans, by whites, by men, by women, and by individuals with various political points of views. I find these accounts bear certain similarities to one another but are often strikingly at odds. Different ideas about the psychological impact of segregation, dissimilar characterizations of the black community, and contrary descriptions of the same moment and the same geographical space reveal that there is no singular Jim Crow experience. Historical reality is multifaceted, and the complexities of individual experiences are best captured in artfully constructed literary memoirs.

Abstract:
The subject of the Masters thesis The Czech Kingdom in The Chronicle of Otakar of Styria is the history of Czech Kingdom in the Otokar of Styrias versified cronicle. The goal of this work is a comprehensive view of that cronicle as a historic source of cetral European history during the second half of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. The Masters thesis includes an evaluation the relationships between the central European sources of that time. It investigates both, the knetty question of the autor's live story and his motivation for writing a work around 100 000 verses. In particular chapters, various social groups, which the author focuses on, are examined (royal houses, aristocracy, burgher class, people). No particular social group can be considered in isolation. Thier interrelations are highlighted in the thesis. Following section introduces Otakar's description of certain central European regions (Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Hungary, Polen and the Holy Roman Empire), which is the foundation of my attempt to discover the cronicler's source and information base. Used method is based on the analysis of cronicle sources and the study of historical materials. The history of the Kingdom of Bohemia results from the above mentioned circumstances. Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 289-298<br>Source-criticism of the Pentateuch suggests that the priests (Source P) alone authored the Holiness Code – the premise being that Source P forms one religious, literate and elite group of several. Through the endeavor to redefine Israelite identity during the Neo-Babylonian Empire of 626–539 BCE and the Achaemenid Persian Empire of 550–330 BCE, various ideologies of Israelite identity were produced by various religious, literate and elite groups. Possibly, the Holiness Code functions as the compromise reached between two such groups, these being: the Shaphanites, and the Zadokites. Moreover, the Holiness Code functions as the basis for the agreed identity of Israel as seen by the Shaphanites and the Zadokites. Specifically, in Leviticus 19:1-19a – as being the Levitical decalogue of the Holiness Code, and which forms the emphasis of this thesis – both Shaphanite and Zadokite ideologies are expressed therein. The Shaphanite ideology is expressed through the Mosaic tradition: i.e., through the Law; and the Zadokite ideology is expressed through the Aaronide tradition: i.e., through the Cult. In the debate between the supremacy of the Law, or the Cult – i.e., Moses or Aaron – the ancient Near Eastern convention of the ‘rivalry between brothers’ is masterfully negotiated in Leviticus 19:1-19a.<br>Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies<br>D. Abstract:
With regard to the relationship between literary works and geographical studies, Massimo Quaini’s interest consolidated into a heuristic imprint whose originality has not yet been adequately enlightened. Through the analysis of his essays, the paper identifies some clues of his thought: methodologically, the need for a critical approach of ‘archeology of knowledge and sources’ to the writer’s profile; teleologically, the identification of the geographical factors inside the works as a tool for territorial enhancement; epistemologically, the use of literary topoi and metaphors as an interpretive key – together with the geographical-historical analysis – of the historical and current territorial dynamics.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter provides a comparative insight into the complex interrelation of travel writing and migration literature. Focusing on the idea of a transnational female theatre historiography, Martina Groß also shows how travel writing and historical migration research can be linked and what potential is inherent in travelogues as sources for historical migration research. Using the travel and migration experiences of nineteenth-century women (Flora Tristan, Minna Wohlgeboren-Wohlbrück, Juliane Déry), their literary documentation, and aesthetic reflection, similarities and differences between migration and travel experiences are analysed in terms of cultural hybridity, the experience of alterity, and the transfer of (artistic) knowledge. Referring to the mechanisms that exclude female voices in theatre history, the chapter concludes with a plea for the perspective of a transnational female theatre historiography.

Abstract:
ZusammenfassungThis article seeks to contextualize a comment by the author Gryphius on the appearance of Mary Stuart in his tragedy Carolus Stuardus (1657/1663). To explain her entry, Gryphius lectures on the historical sources from Buchanan to Camden for the portrayal of Mary Stuart as the sufferer of a trial of injustice. In contrast, there is the literary history of reception, which Gryphius doesn’t mention. Here, after her death, for example in Joost van den Vondel's drama Maria Stuart (1646), Mary Stuart is staged primarily as a Christian Catholic martyr. Gryphius, in turn, according to the central thesis of this article, transforms her Christian martyrdom into a political one by staging Mary as a spirit of the dead. As a dramatic example, Mary thus lends her (ghostly) voice to the historical injustice of the English regicide.

Abstract:
Classical Turkish literature is a literary tradition of approximately six centuries, within the general development of Turkish literature, whose theoretical and aesthetic principles were formed within the circle of Islamic civilization and shaped especially by the influence of Arabic and Persian literature. Classical Turkish literature, which is based on religious, historical, mythological and folklore foundations, also serves as a historical source with the "human" element it contains. Its’ statesmen, scholars, philosophers, poets, religious and sufi elders, legendary heroes and similar figures who left their mark on the culture and history of the society in which they lived are the most important sources of Classical Turkish Literature. Starting from this point, in this study, the names of the individuals mentioned in the Divan of Babur, one of the most important works of Chagatai Turkish, were examined and it was aimed at revealing the influence of the individuals within Babur's poetry world.

Abstract:
In this work, we present discussions developed in critical reading circles based on the analysis of dystopian works. The realization of a reading wheel as a learning strategy is a unique opportunity for socialization in the literate world. In this sense, we propose an interdisciplinary work in the dialogue between History, Literature and Cinema, from the realization of spaces for debate, as well as the understanding of the historian's office, from the reflection of historical sources. We start from the assumption that History as knowledge is representation and narrative of the past. Thus, based on dystopian narratives, we understand the potentiality of considering literary and cinematographic representations in historical research. We consider "1984" a classic work, in Calvino's terms (2007), which exerts an influence and imposes itself as unforgettable, being a book that never finished saying what it had to say, relegating current affairs to the position of background noise, without being able to do without it. Complementarily, we also work with other dystopian works, from filmic representations, such as V for Vendetta, The Hunger Games and The Truman Show.

Th e monuments of medieval architecture from historical Moldova, surviving even before the periods of the formation of the state and until late periods, have neither dating nor direct information about their construction. Most of the ecclesiastical architectural heritage is valued historically on the basis of the documentary information and of the oral and written literary sources, with selective archaeological investigation, but which, without taking into account the architecture of the concrete monument, led to inadequate results. It is necessary to elaborate a method of study of monuments, which would be specifi c to the process of creation of the architectural form, being in the spirit of the creativity of medieval culture. Th is would be the algorithm, which is presented as the structural-numerical model, in which a decisive role, as the manifestation of the universal law “quantitative transition into quality”, are the proportions – variable numerical units that ensure the technical and visual requirements of the architecture of buildings, specifi c to each historical period.

Abstract:
PLACES OF BULGARIAN MEMORY – THE EULOGY FOR CYRIL AND METHODIUS AND ITS COPIES (Summary) The Eulogy for Cyril and Methodius is one of the earliest Slavic sources for the life and work of the Slavic apostles. According to the latest data, it has been preserved in 31 copies, created in a wide area and period of time – from the Balkans to the northernmost Russian literary centers and between the 12th and 18th centuries. Its text is an invariable part of the earliest layer of Slavic sources for the two first teachers and bears the marks of a primary author created by immediate witnesses of the time. It is important to note that this is the second Slavic source after the Vita Metodii to preserve the text of Pope Adrian II’s letter to princes Rostislav, Svetopolk and Kotzel, whose Latin original has not reached us. The text in the two sources is different. As an invariable part of the earliest layer of Slavic sources about Cyril and Methodius and their disciples, which invariably accompanies one of the two main Slavic Cyrillo-Methodidian sources – Vita Cyrilli and Vita Metfdii, the Eulogy for Cyril and Methodius is part of the Bulgarian historical, cultural and literary heritage and part of Bulgarian memory for the two Slavic apostels. The purpose of this study is to trace in which and what type of literary environments the text of the Eulogy was copied and where its copies are currently stored. The manner of their formation and their fate over the centuries is of great importance for the nature of the collections in which the copies of the work are kept, for which basic information is given in the article. These data can answer the question of how the text of this work was distributed, why it was preserved in these manuscript collections. The information is summarized and presented in the form of a geographical map, which shows the distribution and influence of the Eulogy among the southern and eastern Slavs.
