The history and reception of translations of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain form the basis of the discussion in this article. Eighty-four translations of modern and contemporary Chinese literature were published in Spain – either in Spanish or in Catalan – between 1949 and 2010. Using this under-researched corpus as a starting-point, this article explores two interrelated premises: the marginalisation of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain and the mediation of its Spanish reception by Anglophone and Francophone literary systems. To do so, the study investigates the history of translations, pays attention to the evolution of types of translation (direct and indirect), and uses concrete examples from paratexts (back covers and prefaces) and translation reviews. After a discussion of the predominance of indirect translations, three recurring motifs inferred from an analysis of the paratexts and reviews are presented: (a) a preference for documentary value, (b) an insistence on difference and (c) an emphasis on politics and trauma (censorship, dissidence and the Cultural Revolution). In addition, I demonstrate the connections between these recurring motifs in the Spanish reception of Chinese literature in relation to European orientalism and area studies. Ultimately, the recent history of translations of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain helps us to reflect on the complexity and hierarchical nature of literary exchanges on a global scale.

Recent translation theories and descriptive translation studies emphasize the power of translated texts as shaping forces in literary canons as well as the ideological appropriation which the works of translators conceal. French cultural ascendancy in eighteenth and nineteenth century Spain is widely acknowledged, especially in the case of the reception of English, German and Russian literature. However, apart from early research in the field of literary comparativism, French mediation in translation has received inadequate attention in Spanish speaking countries. In this article we intend to analyse the ideological manipulation traced in three Hispanic versions of W.M. Thackeray’s Vanity Fair (1847-48) published between 1860 and 1930, which used the 1853 French translation of the Victorian classic as their source text. Particular consideration will be given to those conflictual translated texts concerning the sexual role of the main male and female characters which wipe out the ambiguity of the original work.

Abstract The Traveler, the Painter and the Writer. Travel Books by Jacobus van LooyTravelling never occurs unmediated. Travelers are guided by pre-existing representations of the Other (discovering or covering foreign realities), by patterns of cultural self-perception and of individual self-observation. The same holds for travel writing, that even shows a double mediation: (1) the mediation of the travelling itself by the selection of what and how the journey is described, and (2) the textual/linguistic mediation of the travelling experience.This article explores the travel books the author and painter Jac. van Looy wrote about his journeys to the south (Italy, Spain, Morocco), covering the period between 1885 (the year he obtained the Prix de Rome) and 1913. On the one hand Van Looys travelling and his painting and writing were definitely pre-modelled, on the other hand, it is argued, the interaction between his travelling and his artistic activities during his search for a new poetology lead to a departure from these established models.

The cultural dynamics of reception are best understood as a reiterative process of reshaping and reframing. Reception as an object of critical study embraces first the history of how texts were read, disseminated, and consumed across media, languages, and geographical regions. But if this is the first port of call, such analysis quickly draws in questions about the relationship between reception and production, audience and agency, about contemporary and posthumous reputation. This special issue investigates the ways in which the act of reception is a reiterative process on a continuous spectrum with cultural production. Receivers — of texts, events, reputations — are mediators, creatively reconstituting that which they receive according to their own agendas and contemporary imperatives. The articles in this collection embrace international, comparative, and new material contexts for early modern reception studies as they address poetry, romance, letters, history, hagiography, autobiography, and literary reviews. The transnational perspectives that emerge lead from the Low Countries to Italy, Ireland to France and the Spanish Netherlands, Spain to England, and England to France. The introductory essay for the issue additionally examines recent digital projects concerned with the history of reading and reception, exploring in particular how digital resource design foregrounds questions of representation and our immersion, as critics, in the act of reception.

La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas was published in Spain for the first time in 1499 as a comedy, and as a tragicomedy in 1502. The first Italian translation of the play was published in Rome in 1506 and gave birth to a parallel and complementary textual tradition on which the reception and translation of the play in other modern languages (such as French and German) were based. Given the wide success of Celestina in Italy, this essay focuses on the hybrid genre of the play, which can be placed at the crossroads of comic and tragic genres but also on the boundaries between narrative and theatrical modes of expression. It emphasizes the importance of Celestina’s dialogic, parodic, and polyphonic structure, and its links with Dante’s Commedia and Boccaccio’s Decameron. Building on the “working hypothesis” of a Florentine genesis of Celestina, this essay explores its connection with humanist comedy and with Aretino’s comic-burlesque literature.
 La Celestina de Fernando de Rojas fut publiée en Espagne pour la première fois en 1499 en tant que comédie, puis en 1502, en tant que tragicomédie. La première traduction italienne de la pièce a été publiée à Rome en 1506 et a donné le jour à une tradition textuelle complémentaire et parallèle, laquelle en a par la suite nourri la réception et la traduction en plusieurs langues modernes (en français et en allemand par exemple). Étant donné le grand succès que reçut La Celestina en Italie, cet essai se penche sur le genre hybride de la pièce, qui participe également des genres tragique et comique, et qui, en outre, se situe à la frontière des modes d’expression narratif et théâtral. Ces observations soulignent l’importance de la structure dialogique, parodique et polyphonique de La Celestina, ainsi que ses liens avec la Divine Comédie de Dante et avec le Décaméron de Boccace. De plus, suivant l’hypothèse de travail d’une genèse florentine de La Celestina, cet article explore ses relations avec la comédie humaniste et la littérature comique-burlesque de l’Arétin.

The significance of Camões’s The Lusiads (pub. 1572) as a symbol of Portuguese imperialism was such that between 1580 and 1660 the epic was printed at important moments of political change, rendered in different languages, and made available to different European audiences. This European chain of reception and translation, and its contextualization within the European diplomatic circles of this period, illustrates the role played by translation and diplomacy in cultural exchange, but also, crucially, in the very evolution of the political imagination of Europe at a time of conflict and shifting political balance. Diplomats were instrumental in the translation of the epic for the various political ends of Portugal, Spain, Italy, and England, while the political gestures associated with these translations demonstrate how the translation of a single text could be used to further either political conflict or cultural convergence, depending upon the allegiances, tastes, networks, and professional status of the translators.
