Abstract:
We present the history of the emergence and development of literary onomastics, the relevance of which is currently not in doubt due to the involvement of its data for the analysis of the artistic world of different authors as linguists and literary critics. The aim of the study is to acquaint readers with those works in which reflections on the function of the proper noun in fiction can be considered as prerequisites for the emergence of onomastics. An important role in the development of science about the proper noun not only scientists, but also critics, writers and journalists, for example, V.G. Belinsky, N.S. Leskov, O.I. Senkovsky. Despite the initial interest of researchers to the etymological meaning of a literary name, in onomastic works middle of 20th century lighting find such problems, as reflected in the anthroponyms of the essential characteristics of the literary character, stylistic conformity onomastic units, social conditionality of name, etc. We point out the primary importance in the problems development of the new branch of linguistics for the 1950s of the works of such scientists as V.N. Mikhailov, R.P. Shaginyan, E.P. Magazanik, D.S. Likhachev. In conclusion we note the modern Voronezh onomastic school research specificity, founded by G.F. Kovalev, the successor of the already classical traditions of Russian onomastics.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of the Onomasticon Thracicum project is to realize a repertory of all the Thracian personal names, supplanting the outdated book of D. Detschew (1957). The gathering and the critical examination of these native names in literary sources, inscriptions (epitaphs, dedications, lists, graffiti, military diplomas), papyri and coins will provide a new research tool, rich of about 1400 different names. A large number of Thracian names is documented elsewhere in the Greek (especial Hellenistic) and Roman world, principally because the utilization of the Thracians as soldiers by the Hellenistic kings, thereafter in all the units of the Roman army. This aspect is extremely important for the constitution of their onomastic repertory, completing the more or less plentiful data from the Thracian space. Recently, more new data about Thracian onomastics are available, improving our knowledge, especially for some regions or, very important, for the feminine names. OnomThrac will pay more attention to the study of this peculiar onomastics in its geographical and chronological context. At least four distinct onomastic territories are now obvious for the Thracian complex: Thracian names; Daco-Moesian names; western Thracian names; Bithynian names. More indexes (as a reverse index; or the Genitive forms), as well as a general bibliography, will accompany the repertory.

Onomastic units mean a special number. This field is one of the focus areas of research in modern Azerbaijani linguistics. Special attention is paid to the development of onomastic units in the literary language of our great poet S.Vurgun, who played an exceptional role in the enrichment of the Azerbaijani language. Each of the onomastic units was skillfully used in the work of S.Vurgun. Research shows that our artists used the appellation of words when naming images. This is clearly reflected in the literary language of S.Vurgun. In S.Vurgun's poem, the names are arranged according to the descriptive situation of the event. Key words: onomastics, anthroponym, toponym, ethnonym, hydronym, ctematonym, cosmonym, zoonym, appellation, semantic

Abstract:
The article reviews the volume Onomastics between Sacred and Profane (ed. by O. Felecan, 2019), highlighting its contribution to the field of onomastic research as well as to multidisciplinary spheres of knowledge dealing with the concepts of the sacred and the profane. The review follows the structural principles of the volume, summarizing the main findings presented in 26 chapters within five thematic sections: onomastic theory and divine names; toponymy; anthroponymy; ergonymy; literary onomastics and wordplay. In relation to sacredness, the essays cover such issues as genuinely sacred names (divine names) and secular names with motivational and functional exponents of sacredness. Most articles dealing with the concept of the profane, either explicitly or implicitly, confirm the modern tendencies of secularization/desacralization of the sacred and (pseudo-)sacralization of the secular, particularly in Western cultures or cultures, affected by westernization. These tendencies become evident in a number of onomastic practices as exponents of socio-cultural interaction (breaking onomastic taboos, renaming due to ideological reasons, naming secular things after sacred objects for manipulating purposes, etc.). The review is concluded with recommendatory remarks to continue this project and extend its representativeness by drawing data from other geographic regions and national cultures.

Lolu cwaningo lumayelana nokwethiwa kwabalingiswa emibhalweni ekhethekile ebhalwe emva kokuzuzwa kombuso wentando yabantu. Ukwethiwa kwegama lomuntu kusemqoka kakhulu osikweni lakwaZulu, njengakwamanye amasiko ase-Afrika. Imvamisa lawa magama ahamba nezincazelo kanti futhi ahambisana nezehlo ezithile. Amagama angaveza ulwazi olukhulu ngamasiko nezinkolelo ezahlukene ngokomphakathi nangokwezizwe. Isiko lokwethiwa kwamagama luyaziveza ngendlela ababhali abangama-Afrika abetha ngayo abalingiswa emisebenzini yobuciko eyahlukene. Umbhali usuke enenhloso nezizathu ezithile ngalelo gama. Umbuzo onqala wocwaningo ubheka ukuthi ngabe ababhali babusebenzise kanjani ubuciko bokwethiwa kwamagama emibhalweni (Literary onomastics), ukwakha abalingiswa, emibhalweni eqokiwe yesiZulu ebhalwe ngemuva kokuzuzwa kombuso wentando yabantu. Abstract:
A mention of name in literature is almost always likely to recall the question Juliet posed to Romeo about his family name Montague in William Shakespeare´s Romeo and Juliet. In reading creative works we tend to identify characters basically by the names given to them. It is on this basic premise that some character analysis methods tend to define characters by taking recourse to their names and sometimes identifying them in metaphorical terms or as speaking names. Names play a very central and important role in any reading exercise and so would certainly the names given to characters be of importance to us. These are linguistic or semiotic signs that play a very crucial role in the overall linguistic structure of a literary text or its signification. Decoding of the names therefore becomes an important critical engagement in as far as it helps the reader in his deciphering of the text in which the names are. Characters´ names, as this article will show, can be used artistically to achieve a number of goals like encoding a central trait in a particular character´s signification, embracing crucial thematic motifs, ideological toning as well as even showing the particular writer´s point of view. Some of these qualities are easily lost in translation.

Abstract:
Beowulf is preserved in a single manuscript written out around the year 1000, but there are many reasons to believe that the poem was composed several centuries before this particular act of manual reproduction. Most significantly, the meter of Beowulf reveals that the poet regularly observed distinctions of etymological length that became phonologically indistinct before 725 in Mercia. This dissertation gauges the explanatory power of the hypothesis that Beowulf was composed about three centuries before the production of the extant manuscript. The following studies test the hypothesis of archaic composition by determining whether it is able to accommodate independent forms of evidence drawn from the fields of linguistics, textual criticism, and literary history.

Butler, James Odelle. "Name, place, and emotional space : themed semantics in literary onomastic research." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4165/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research uses literary resources as evidence against the argument that names are potentially semantically meaningless entities. A secondary goal is to highlight and discuss the value of onomastics from both a literary and linguistic perspective. The thesis proposes a methodology for the assessment of literary sources based on genre, arguing that names, and genre in turn, may be defined through their respective engagement with thematic considerations, providing a relevant critical structure by which to assess the application or construction of names within fiction. The proposed methodology is first used to assess the placenames within dystopian literature, taking Orwell’s 1984 (1949), Huxley’s Brave New World (1931), and Zamyatin’s We (1924) as exemplar texts for the genre. The emblematic themes identified within the onymic patterns (propaganda, classification and regulation) all share a common thematic root: power and control. In order to assess the validity of this approach, the fictional worlds depicted in a selection of other dystopic texts are also examined. A special study is made of terrapsychology and fictional ontology, as well as of three distinct subgenres of the gothic. Case studies of the latter are each focused around a different ontological mode (fictional, part-fictional, and non-fictional placenames), covering the fantastic world of Peake’s Gormenghast setting (two texts published in 1946 and 1950), Lovecraft’s variant New England county (six texts, 1922 to 1936), and the representative contemporary setting of Brook’s World War Z (2006), respectively.

Abstract:
Introduction to Literary Onomastics Abstract Žaneta Dvořáková Czech onomastics has been traditionally well advanced; it has a high-quality theoretical and methodological foundation and is highly regarded internationally. However, unlike in other countries, literary onomastics as one of its disciplines still lacks sufficient attention. R. Šrámek - along with his counterparts abroad, K. Gutschmidt and W. F. H. Nicolaisen - points out its terminological and methodological inconsistency, insufficient theoretical elaboration and the problem of defining its scope of research. It is this call that I want to answer with my dissertation. The goal of my Introduction To Literary Onomastics is to provide a critical and complex summary and assessment of the current understanding of literary proper names and to further research the subject - especially by extending its scope with some new views of anthroponyms in fiction based on profound analyses of modern works of Czech and foreign literature of the 19th and 20th century. My research builds upon methodological-theoretical findings reached by the development of both Czech and foreign literary onomastics; at the same time, it draws on the latest findings of general onomastic theory. Excerpted works purposely represent a wide variety of literary genres, which allows us to...

Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors describe the development and application of language technology for intelligent information access to the content of digitized cultural heritage collections in the form of Swedish classical literary works. This technology offers sophisticated and flexible support functions to literary scholars and researchers. The authors focus on one kind of text processing technology (named entity recognition) and one research field (literary onomastics), but try to argue that the techniques involved are quite general and can be further developed in a number of directions. This way, the authors aim at supporting the users of digitized literature collections with tools that enable semantic search, browsing and indexing of texts. In this sense, the authors offer new ways for exploring the large volumes of literary texts being made available through national cultural heritage digitization projects. This article discusses the major trends in scholarship about linguistic onomastic processes of construing names, the semantic standing of proper names, and the probable consequences names have on readers. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the relevance and potential of literary onomastics, the employment and role of names in literary works, and naming aspects that are instrumental in the complexity and appeal of the fiction. As examples, we examine a new research in Names from the Journal of Onomastics about what makes the proper names of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth so fitting.
