Abstract:
In terms of the relationship between city and literature, Harold Bloom in his works Literary Places points out city is the poetical dwelling and source of literature, while writers construct various images of city in the literature. By analyzing the relationship between city and literature, on one side, city is the matrix of literature. City provides writers with writing materials and opportunities to demonstrate the panorama of a city. On the other side, writer’s works cultivate a kind of culture in a city and make the city come the unique literary capital.

AbstractThe focus of this article is a vast seventeenth-century panorama of Constantinople, which is an exceptional drawing of the city, currently displayed at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. The panorama is an elaborate piece of anti-Ottoman propaganda designed by the Franciscan friar Niccolò Guidalotto da Mondavio. Guidalotto also prepared a large manuscript, held in the Vatican Library, which details the panorama’s meaning and the motivation behind its creation. It depicts the city as seen from across the Golden Horn in Galata, throwing new light on both the city and the relationships between the rival Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire. It also trumpets the unalloyed Christian zeal of Niccolò Guidalotto and serves as a fascinating example of visual Crusade propaganda against the Ottomans in the early modern period.

Abstract:
The Romanian writer George Dorul Dumitrescu arrived at Chisinau in 1933 and worked for a time as a substitute teacher of Romanian at the „Regele Ferdinand I” Military High School. In 1944, a memoir about Chisinau appeared in Bucharest, entitled The City of Remembrance. Thanks to this book, we have the opportunity to recover the image of Chisinau from the interwar period with all the urban and cultural acquisitions, acquired in more than half a century under two political regimes. The author of the memoirs takes us imaginarily through a representative urban space of Chisinau. One by one, as the reading progresses, the center of a „special brilliance”, the wide boulevards and the clean streets with tree salong, the massively built building sand the elegant gardens take shape. For anyone who wants to see this literary representation imaginarily reconstructs, like current digital technologies nD, a true „western city”. From The wanderers in thekidnapped land by Dumitru Moruzi, George Dorul Dumitrescu created perhaps the widestand most amazing panorama of the city in the literary space.

Abstract:
The perception of Fyodor Dostoevsky as a literary painter of St. Petersburg has become an axiom in literary criticism. However, modern researchers pay attention to the significance of other cities for the writer, which are inextricably linked both with his biography and his work. Fyodor Dostoevsky not only instantly noticed visual metaphors and historical and cultural narratives of the places where he was destined to be, but he also included presciently read city texts in his literary works. This article is aimed to identify those ‘local texts’ of the urban space in the novel “The Adolescent”, which contribute to the reconstruction and representation of its basic concepts. This research affirms the consistency and integrity of the artistic geo-panorama created by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The creation and representation of concepts both by the writer and his heroes are carried out by comparing individual points and forming a kind of textual ‘isolines’. As an analytical and illustrative material, various modifications of such “isolines” of are given, the elements of which are St. Petersburg, Moscow, Konigsberg, and Ems. The local texts of these cities contribute to the restoration of the nucleus meanings of the basic concepts of the penultimate work by Fyodor Dostoevsky, which include: disorder, ugliness, goodness, random family, strength, heart, living life, pilgrimage, wandering, care, and flunkeyism.

Abstract:
This essay focuses on the relationship between certain popular visual forms, such as the city sketch and the panorama, and the making of an urban novelistic aesthetic, of which Charles Dickens's Bleak House (1852-53) is the most developed embodiment. In order to delineate the specific features of this urban aesthetic I turn to the very different ways in which William Makepeace Thackeray in Pendennis (1848-50) and, especially, Vanity Fair (1847-48) articulates the city and those who inhabit it-despite Thackeray's familiarity with the representational modes that developed in the relatively "lower" forms of visual culture. Through this process of differentiation I show how this urban aesthetic involves distinct ways of negotiating such problems as the tension between the dispersive and the centralizing impulses of the city, as well as the threat that the teeming, socially unpredictable life of the city posed to the traditional domain of the novel, the middle- or upper-class home. Finally, by setting off Dickens's mode of figuring character against Thackeray's more self-consciously literary methods, I highlight the ways in which the urban aesthetic that underlies Bleak House affected Dickens's methods.

Abstract:
In literary works, the construction of urban space serves as both a canvas for the subjective perceptions of the novelist towards society and a mirror reflecting the objective social order of a particular era. Within Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, the city of St. Petersburg in the 19th century emerges as a central backdrop, with the bustling Hay Market serving as a focal point. Dostoevsky adeptly captures the city's darkness and oppressive atmosphere, presenting it as a microcosm of societal complexities. This essay delves into the lives of St. Petersburg's lower-class denizens as depicted in the novel, using Dostoevsky's portrayal of the city's "dark panorama" to examine its broader implications. Rather than merely serving as a backdrop, the city becomes a reflection of human consciousness, encapsulating the author's nuanced understanding of social dynamics and psychological intricacies. Through an analysis of urban space in Crime and Punishment, this paper aims to elucidate Dostoevsky's exploration of the interconnectedness between societal structures and individual psyches.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since the 1990s, urban cultural policy in the UK has been bound to the cause of urban regeneration. Much has been written in examination and critique of this relationship, but what happens when the direction of strategic attention is reversed and civic leadership seeks to regenerate culture itself? The city of Glasgow, having made capital of culture over many decades, has moved towards a strategy for the development of literary Glasgow. This thesis documents a search for those factors crucial to that strategy. The research focuses on literary Glasgow as one aspect of the city’s cultural sector; identifies and examines gaps in the relationship between the civic cultural organisation and literary communities; and highlights those elements vital to the formation of a strategy for development of the literary in Glasgow. An extended period of participatory ethnographic research within the Aye Write! book festival and Sunny Govan Community Radio, is supplemented with data from interviews conducted across the literary sector and analysis of organisational documentation. Through these a gap has been identified between the policies and operations of a civic cultural organisation, and the desires of those engaged within the literary community. This gap is caused, in part, by the lack of a mechanism with which to reconcile contrasting narratives about the cultural essence of the city, or to negotiate the variations in definitions of value in relation to cultural engagement. The interdisciplinary approach builds upon insights from existing work within publishing studies, cultural policy, complexity theory and organisational studies to construct an understanding of the dynamics of Glasgow’s literary sector. This reveals the need for a framework in support of a landscape of practice, a desire for the placement of boundary objects to facilitate engagement, and the significance of value in relation to participation in literary activity. This work informs a strategy for literary Glasgow and contributes to conversations on strategies for cultural development in other cities.

Abstract:
The presentation aims to focus from an ecdotic perspective, and from unexplored hermeneutic angles, on potentially prominent features of the annotated editions in which are brought together those genologically varied literary-type writings that are correlated with the analogous artistic fields, such as the visual arts, architecture or music, starting from relevant concrete examples in the Italian cultural landscape. Furthermore, attention will be drawn to how to make an edition of a philological character, scientifically grounded, in which a literary transposition of the philosophical content takes place, invested in it as well in an interdisciplinary sense. In addition to texts outlining art and philosophy, the current paper explores those belonging to the sphere of the sciences, if they possess similar literary attributes because they present certain thematic connections or consistent stylistic constants. Simultaneously, the intent is to analyze the ways in which a component of literariness is infused into these texts, which is observed both in terms of content and form, that is, emerging from the predilected theme, or from their internal characteristics. Thus in the paper are approached utterly important theoretical and literary-critical questions from an interdisciplinary perspective, making it possible to arrive at innovative knowledge from the unfolding potential, developing such texts.

Abstract:
Petr Hruska (born 1964) is a poet and literary historian from Ostrava. This post-industrial city used to be famous for its black coal mines and steel factories. At the time of the industrial boom, Ostrava started to be a melting pot of nations living in this part of Central Europe the Czechs, Poles, Germans from Silesia, Austrians, Jews, and Slovaks. No wonder, then, that the cultural life of this region differs from that in traditional centres of Czech culture like Prague or Brno. Nevertheless, Hruskas collections of poems have been awarded the most prestigious Czech literary prizes and are more and more often translated into foreign languages. The following essay is based on the book of Hruskas selected poems, translated at the Harvard University and published in Britain (Everything Indicates, 2023). After the analyses of Hruskas main themes and means of their verbal expression, attention must be paid to how he deals with the interplay between the history of individuals and families versus broader social and political contexts. Of course, describing this tension is quite common among artists and experts in social sciences. However, Hruskas literary texts are in many aspects unconventional because his way of thinking and expression does not follow the typical stylistic norms of both classical and modernist poetry. The methodology of comparative literary studies must be used here because, without it, the international success of the author from a cultural periphery cannot be adequately understood. In his early poems, Hruska was a representative of so-called everyday poetry settled in a small universe of his family and friends. Nevertheless, in his newest collection, I Caught Sight of My Face (Spatril jsem svou tvar, 2022), he takes part in Magellans voyage around the world, reflecting on the transient and the eternal aspects of human life. It seems that there is no significant difference between intimate and social history, and Hruska can express it in simple sentences with no complicated metaphors. In the chaos of the postmodern world, this kind of writing can be attractive even for readers who are not fond of traditional poetry.

Abstract:
As one of the oldest capitals in the heart of Europe and the imperial capital, Vienna is the place where various cultures and influences intersect. The city played a prominent role as the meeting point of Serbian and Czech arts and culture. This paper analyses the preconditions that facilitated the development of Slavistics in Vienna, the importance of personal contacts between the representatives of Serbian and Czech National Revival, as well as the role of Vienna publishing activities and periodicals in the deepening of such contacts. Special attention is paid to the contribution and role of Konstantin Jireček and the University of Vienna in the empowerment of these connections. Certain periods of modern history witnessed an increase in the migration of migrants of Serbian and Czech origin to Vienna. Among them, there were writers, artists and intellectuals who shared a similar fate. The theoretical framework of the paper, apart from the literary and historical approach, incorporates an interdisciplinary approach to the discussion of urbansociological and phenomenological occurrences arising from the contact between Serbian and Czech culture.

Abstract:
Literary tourism is related with cultural tourism and cultural heritage. Its looks like that it is a phenomena of new age, but for it are connected mainteend terms, and it is, by itself, much older. A long time ago exist a need for traveling on pilgrimage trying to fi nd the cradle of ancient art and poetry in Old Rome and Ancient Greece, Keats, Shelly, Byron...The birthplace of tourism is England, which was born with first tour travel by train from Loughborough to Lester in July 1841, which was organized by Thomas Cook, future founder of first tourist agency. There is some opinion that literary tourism actually started in England too, when actor David Garrick in the year 1769. "discovered" Shakespeare's birthplace Stratford upon Avon. As a huge Shakespeare admirer and actor of his playing figures, on demand of local people he donated a writers statue for city hall. He decided too, to organized a three days festival in month September on the name "Jubilee" which was announced in newspapers. In spite of catastrophe of the first festival because of big rain, Shamilion kespears birth place become a famous and the biggest center of literary tourism in Britain with 2,5 tourist every year. We are presented a theoretical frame of literary tourism, but in focus we have a "Literary guide trough Belgrade" as an example of good practise. We are following all phases of this project, from idea, editing in specialised magazines, making tours on the ground, publishing book and finally shooting a documentary film based on the model of city tours. Inspired by writers Dragan Velikich essay about Berlin, in which he wrote about enciclopedic perfect guide-book "Literary guide trough Berlin".It recovered remembrance on the past and registered presence of hundred writers and artists. On path of it author is trying trough lives and works couple of dozen co-called Belgrades writers to paint the picture of cultural and historical uprise of Serbian capital, making a net of itineraries which connected different points.

Гарлицька, Т. С. Substandard Vocabulary in the System of Urban Communication. Криворізький державний педагогічний університет, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/3912.

Full text
Abstract:
The article is devoted to substandard elements which are considered as one of the components in the system of urban forms of communication. The Object of our research is substandard vocabulary, the Subject is structural characteristics of the modern city language, the Purpose of the study is to define the main types of substandard vocabulary and their role in the system of urban communication. The theoretical base of our research includes the scientific works of native and foreign linguists, which are devoted to urban linguistics (B. Larin, M. Makovskyi, V. Labov, T. Yerofeieva, L. Pederson, R. McDavid, O. Horbach, L. Stavytska, Y. Stepanov, S. Martos). Different lexical and phraseological units, taken from the Ukrainian, Russian and American Dictionaries of slang and jargon, serve as the material of our research. The main components of the city language include literary language, territorial dialects, different intermediate transitional types, which are used in the colloquial everyday communication but do not have territorial limited character, and social dialects. The structural characteristics, proposed in the article, demonstrate the variety and correlation of different subsystems of the city language. Today peripheral elements play the main role in the city communication. They are also called substandard, non-codified, marginal, non-literary elements or the jargon styles of communication. Among substandard elements of the city language the most important are social dialects, which include such subsystems as argot, jargon and slang. The origin, functioning and characteristics of each subsystem are studied on the material of linguistic literature of different countries. It is also ascertained that argot is the oldest form of sociolects, jargon divides into corporative and professional ones, in the structure of slangy words there are common and special slang. Besides, we can speak about sociolectosentrism of the native linguistics and linguemosentrism of the English tradition of slang nomination. Except social dialects, the important structural elements of the city language are also intermediate transitional types, which include koine, colloquialisms, interdialect, surzhyk, pidgin and creole. Surzhyk can be attributed to the same type of language formations as pidgin and creole because these types of oral speech were created mostly by means of the units mixing of the obtruded language of the parent state with the elements of the native languages.
