Embora haja inúmeros instrumentos legais e estratégias, na prática este serviço não está devidamente implantado na Cidade, apesar do reconhecimento da sua importância.<br>The general objective of this dissertation, as a panorama of waste sorting of household waste, is to present the legal compliance of the City of Rio de Janeiro with the guidelines, targets and first results of the Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan (PMGIRS 2013-2016) and (PMGIRS 2017-2020). Abstract:

Docherty, Paul J. "Developing literary Glasgow : towards a strategy for a reading, writing and publishing city." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/28083.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the 1990s, urban cultural policy in the UK has been bound to the cause of urban regeneration. Much has been written in examination and critique of this relationship, but what happens when the direction of strategic attention is reversed and civic leadership seeks to regenerate culture itself? The city of Glasgow, having made capital of culture over many decades, has moved towards a strategy for the development of literary Glasgow. This thesis documents a search for those factors crucial to that strategy. The research focuses on literary Glasgow as one aspect of the city’s cultural sector; identifies and examines gaps in the relationship between the civic cultural organisation and literary communities; and highlights those elements vital to the formation of a strategy for development of the literary in Glasgow. An extended period of participatory ethnographic research within the Aye Write! book festival and Sunny Govan Community Radio, is supplemented with data from interviews conducted across the literary sector and analysis of organisational documentation. Through these a gap has been identified between the policies and operations of a civic cultural organisation, and the desires of those engaged within the literary community. This gap is caused, in part, by the lack of a mechanism with which to reconcile contrasting narratives about the cultural essence of the city, or to negotiate the variations in definitions of value in relation to cultural engagement. The interdisciplinary approach builds upon insights from existing work within publishing studies, cultural policy, complexity theory and organisational studies to construct an understanding of the dynamics of Glasgow’s literary sector. This reveals the need for a framework in support of a landscape of practice, a desire for the placement of boundary objects to facilitate engagement, and the significance of value in relation to participation in literary activity. This work informs a strategy for literary Glasgow and contributes to conversations on strategies for cultural development in other cities.

Granville, Scott. "Mapping the Geographical and Literary Boundaries of Los Angeles: A Real and Imagined City." The University of Waikato, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2359.

Full text
Abstract:
In Los Angeles, the influence of Hollywood and the film industry, combined with a non-stop barrage of media images, has blurred the line between the real and imaged. The literature reveals a city exploding with cultural, racial and social differences, making Los Angeles a confusing and alienating place. The literature of Los Angeles reflects the changing face of the city. Los Angeles was always a city with a promising future, economic booms and optimism seemed to suggest that here was a place where the American Dream really could come true. Thousands travelled west in search of sunshine, oranges and a life that formerly, they could only dream of having. Yet, the literature of Los Angeles has highlighted the city's actual history together with a realization of undercurrents of violence, prejudice, depression and shattered dreams. The past, present and future is used to reveal a city that is in stark opposition to the Los Angeles, waves of immigrants came to find. This thesis explores the idea of the dreamer coming west to Los Angeles within the literature and the variety of ways in the travellers' romantic notions of Los Angeles as a city of promise, is betrayed, leaving a desperate people in its wake. The literature shows that beneath the shiny surface of a city founded on sunshine and prosperity, corruption reached all levels of society and the 'mean streets' abound. Later, influenced by an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness caused by Post-war nuclear depression, McCarthyism, loss of identity, and living in a city fragmented by racial tension and an ever growing gap between the very rich and the very poor, the literature of Los Angeles reflects not only the fears of that city, but of American society as a whole. The collision of technology, rapid progression and population explosion turned Los Angeles into a disconnected city, where the real and imagined merge in a cityscape that demonstrates a conflicting combination of historical replication, original design and movie-set inspiration. Nothing is ever what it appears to be in Los Angeles.

Smith, Jared. "Beyond the inferno : literary representations of New York City before and after 9/11." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14270.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 75-82).<br>From its founding, New York City has served as the gateway to the New World and, as such, has been the impetus behind the American Dream. As the city grew in size and importance, though, so the levels of antagonism rose among its inhabitants, for, like any large-scale urban environment, it was filled with what Georg Simmel labels 'overwhelming social forces' (1950:410). These forces became even more relevant within the context of what Fredric Jameson calls the 'postmodern hyperspace' (1984:83) of urban society which emerged during the latter half of the twentieth century. Thus, by focusing on the real-world example of New York, this dissertation examines how the dialectical negotiation between a postmodern city's form and its function has a profound impact on the identities of that city's inhabitants, producing alienating and antagonistic experiences of city life which, in turn, places increasing pressure on both the conception and perception of an individual's status within the boundaries of that cityscape. The terrorist attacks that occurred on 11 September 2001 functioned as yet another overwhelming force that greatly affected New York's inhabitants. The dedicated media coverage of the event effectively burned the image of a 'wounded' New York into people minds. This emotional imprinting occurred not only because of the horrifying destruction wrought upon the city, leading to the loss of the spectacle that was the World Trade Centre, but also because of the change that this destruction brought about in the mindset of everyone who watched those buildings fall, leading to the establishment of a 'before' and 'after' dialectic. Two literary texts that highlight this dialectic were chosen to provide the basis of this dissertation's analysis. These are Salman Rushdie's Fury (2001) and Don DeLillo's Falling Man (2007). Written and set in 2000, Fury provides an insightful and provocative account of life in New York at the turn of the twenty-first century and, through a retrospective reading of this novel, one can identify its prescience in depicting a New York in which the escalating antagonism, both within and without the city, seems to herald impending disaster. Indeed, that disaster was the 9/11 attacks, which Falling Man takes as its subject, providing individualised, albeit 3 fictional, accounts of the trauma that was experienced by those who were in the towers and their families, as well as those who witnessed it. By offering an analysis of Rushdie and DeLillo's narrative strategies in these novels, specifically in light of Michel Foucault's theory of the heterotopia, Italo Calvino's conception of the 'infernal city' in his Invisible Cities (1974), and the work of key 9/11 theorists this dissertation will plot the trajectory of the 'before' and 'after' dialectic in order to ascertain how effectively these novels function as (re)presentations of the real-world city of New York.

Neculai, Catalina. "'Some fanatical New York promoting' : literary economies of urban regime transformation in New York City, 1970s-1980s." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2008. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2733/.

Full text
Abstract:
The project is an inter-disciplinary intervention into a field that may be largely called New York Studies or, more explicitly, the uses of urban, human and cultural geography for a cultural-materialist history of New York between the fiscal crisis years of the mid-1970s through to the Market Crash of October 1987. My concern is to offer a critique of urban regime transformation in New York, the kind of private-public coalitions taking shape in response to the advent and consolidation of the FIRE (finance, insurance and real estate) industries and their socio-spatial implications, through the lenses of cultural production. I am interested in the ways in which representation - the literary, the cinematic (more sparsely and tangentially), the documented and the archival in an analytically productive conjunction - encodes and arbitrates the changes in the production of urban space in New York City. Thus, the project underlines the heightened significance of literary economies for understanding the experiential structures of urban transformation in 1970s and 1980s New York. Driven by the belief that written culture, just like visual art, may prefigure and telescope urban change, a handful of New York writers dared to tread (both literally and symbolically) where the sociologist, the urban geographer or the documenter does so by professional default, and thus engaged head-on with the hard city of socio-economic networks. This kind of ‘urbanisation of [literary] consciousness’ calls for refreshed modes of enquiry, proposed in Chapter 1, at which point fetishist and aestheticist constructions of the city in the postmodernist key become inadequate, insufficient and politically ineffectual interpretative strategies. The following three-fold case study analysis of counterculture and the underground economy, of homesteading and ‘low rent’ fiction, of the finance industry, publishing and ‘financial writing’ may offer radical opportunities for revisiting both the space of representation and the represented space of urban decline and growth through a geocultural reading for the unevenness of urban space.

This work aims to address the emerging field of geohumanities, with particular attention to the approaches and methodologies developed in the field of literary geography. The six chapters focus on different urban contexts (North-eastern Italy's polinucleated city, international metropolises such as New York and Berlin, the Po Delta region) and disparate literary works and genres (novels, short stories collections, graphic novels and comic books) to analyse the representation and experience of contemporary urban life from a mobile geocritical perspective. Particular attention is paid to the narrative representation of urban practices, as well as to the exploration of interdisciplinary research methods informed by both urban/cultural geography and literary theory and criticism.<br>Il lavoro si rivolge all'ambito delle geohumanities, facendo particolare riferimento agli approcci e alle metodologie della geografia letteraria. This project explores the complexity of Melbourne’s inner and outer suburban spaces as portrayed within contemporary Melbourne fiction. The study is a textual analysis of the works of several Melbourne writers whose writings feature their city’s suburbs as significant sites in the exploration of the relationship between identity and place. I argue that Melbourne, as a city of suburbs, is a paradigm worthy of writerly and critical attention. The fictional texts are Christos Tsiolkas’s The Slap (2008), Sonya Hartnett’s Butterfly (2009), Steven Carroll’s novel The Time We Have Taken (2007) and Wayne Macauley’s novel Blueprints for a Barbed-Wire Canoe (2004).

I hope to find out what made Austen an esteemed writer and if the same criteria of evaluation can be applied to Bushnell. Abstract:
The nineteenth century was a period of great changes in the world. The Industrial Revolution brought positive aspects to journalism due to the introduction of new technologies that allowed lowering the costs of production and increasing the speed of the transmission of information between journalists / reporters and the newspapers’ redaction. On the other hand, the industrial development boosted deep social transformations, caused by the huge affluence of people to cities that had become industrial centres. Metropolises filled with morally decadent beings who survive in also decadent physical spaces are studied by social researchers, among whom literary journalists, men who entered the most hidden spaces of the cities and transmitted their impressions on what they observed. Fialho de Almeida wrote only about the city of Lisbon, a space that he started to know since he was a teenager. His personal experiences and his interest in ‘other’ places of the Portuguese capital make him describe the houses, the people and the habits and give suggestions for the resolution of problems. Having as the starting point the image of the city given by Fialho de Almeida in his texts of literary journalism, it is important to make the comparison with the image that other Portuguese literary journalists of the late nineteenth century provided about Lisbon, but also about London or Paris, with the aim of showing the similarities that some contemporary literary journalists found about Lisbon, London and Paris. Fialho de Almeida was not a consensual author and this work is equally about literary journalism, a subject of Communication Sciences that creates several opinions on its edges: whether it belongs to journalism or to literature.<br>N/A

Abstract:
The object of this study is to present a diachronic analysis of the descriptions of Havana in Cuban literature. We have defined the city's status as a narrative object among Cuban novels and short stories from the 19th century to the present day. Central to the national literature, the Cuban capital city had gradually been endowed with multiple functions and representations, which vary depending on the aesthetic viewpoints or descriptive stances adopted by different authors. Our project consists not only in analysing the ever-changing physiognomy of this particular urban landscape within the scope of our corpus, but also in drawing bridges between different eras in order to outline the dialectic dynamics which exist between these stories. By paying close attention to the characteristics of literary Havana, we have begun assembling the pieces of a puzzle that is still in the making, thus reflecting the kaleidoscopic image of a city which has become a literary landscape. Used as the frame of reference for a precise geographical and socio-historical reality, the Havana of Cuban fictions also bears a strong and complex symbolic quality. As the object of these writings, it is also a poetic space which, by detaching itself from its actual referent, creates a multiplicity of imaginary urban landscapes

It was used the theoretical assumptions of Rildo Cosson were used on the Expanded Sequence, in which we reflect on the spatial configuration in the book "Mistérios de Porto Alegre" by Moacyr Scliar (2004) and contributed to the perception of the building symbolic place where students / readers live. Regarding to the methodology were outlined the proposals by Michel Thiollent in Action Research, applied to Literary Reading practices in school settings. This study considers the city and its spatial configuration and to analyze them, elaborations by Michel de Certeau, Sandra Jatahy Pesavento, Néstor García Canclini, and others are mentioned because they are considered as the materialization of speech, which is why, under this perspective, it cannot be seen as a reality in itself, but as a process of social production. The power relationships established in this movement of organization, planning and performance in urban space, aimed at construction and reconstruction of places. This dynamic, which moves the interactions to which students are immersed, could be studied through the intervention made between the teacher / researcher, teachers / staff, teaching staff, the librarian, the family and the local community with favorable finding, which confirmed the significance of the research<br>Esta dissertação apresenta um Projeto de Intervenção Pedagógica, implementado no 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental II, numa Escola Pública da Cidade de Cascavel, Paraná.

The city of Lisbon depicted in the pages of the Book of Disquiet: composed by Bernardo Soares, keep-book assistant in the city of Lisbon, written by Fernando Pessoa, is confirmed as an artistic creation and it is transformed into a literary city, by the eyes of Fernando Pessoa to his \"semiheteronym\" Bernardo Soares. Comparing this view of Lisbon to another one, also produced for Fernando Pessoa for the traveller\'s guide Lisbon: what the tourist should see - a not literary it -, allows, in our research, an aesthetic and anthropological approach of the visual perception attempted by the author. On one hand, in the Book of Disquiet, the building up of a certain original aesthetic city revealing a city conformed by the contrast inhabited space and interior landscape view. On the other hand, a place woven in the memory of the author, closer to the apparent real man, starting from his historical identification with the city.

Bendjeddou, Mohamed Yazid. "Two literary responses to American society in the early modern era : a comparison of selected novels by Theodore Dreiser and Upton Sinclair in relation to their portrayal of the immigrant, the city, the business tycoon, women, and the problem of labour, 1900-1929." Abstract:
This thesis analyses the responses of Theodore Dreiser and Upton Sinclair to American society in the early modern era through their treatment of the immigrant, the city, the business tycoon, women, and the labour problem. The role of Dreiser and Sinclair as critics of American society has often been dealt with and highly praised. Although the thesis also discusses this particular aspect, its main purpose lies with the comparison of Dreiser's and Sinclair's ideological and literary responses to these socio-economic issues. The study starts with an account of the literary climate of the time. It shows that American literature at the close of the nineteenth century and in the early beginning of the twentieth century stems from the socio-economic and political unrest of the Gilded Age. American writers demonstrated an increasing concern with the evil consequences of the new technological development and felt it was their duty to record the prevailing conditions and express their reactions. They used the realist technique to describe things as they were and adopted naturalism to give a scientific study of their society. As a mirror of American society at the outset of the twentieth century, American fiction reflected the unrest and contradictions of this period and gave a clearer insight into the inner responses of American writers to the new order. It revealed that in spite of a general feeling of anxiety and disillusionment among American writers, individual reactions against the current events were diverse. They varied from an attitude of resignation and pessimistic speculations about America's future to an active desire to break rising capitalism and to reform American society. This analysis of Dreiser's and Sinclair's responses to some of the problems of America has been placed to a large extent in this divided socio-economic and literary climate. Thus while the comparison shows the two writers' strong indictment of American society, it also shows two distinct ideological and literary responses to its upheavals. Then the main body of the study divides into six chapters. Chapter one compares the socio-political and literary views of Dreiser and Sinclair and gives, thus, an idea about the spirit with which they treated their subject matter and the course of their literary works. This chapter also deals with the relationship between Dreiser and Sinclair in an attempt to find traces of a debate between the two writers on the socio-economic and literary situations in America. The following chapters focus on Dreiser's and Sinclair's treatment of the immigrant, the city, the business tycoon, women, and the labour problem. Each of these chapters starts with a brief historical account of the subject of study as a background to the fiction. Then it shows Dreiser's and Sinclair's respective concern with, and experience of, the problem, and moves onto the analysis of their literary treatment of it. The aim of this thesis has been to show that no matter what their artistic, ideological, and philosophical beliefs, American writers in the years of unrest which followed the large-scale industrialisation in their country, were called to assume their social responsibilities and contribute to the cause of social improvement.

Noguchi, Yu.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper aims to understand Cortázar’s poetics in its totality by means of comparative analysis. The research is developed according to the following four topics: Romantic poetics, technology, the nostalgic tendency of the post-war period, political commitment and the Second Avant-garde. Regarding the first topic, a revision of the literary Romanticism is carried out from critical works of various critics, like Paul de Man. Specifically, Cortázar’s three poems, which are explicitly inspired by Keats’ «Ode to a Grecian Urn», are read in respect to the Romantic experience of desiring to eternize. With regard to the second topic, the focus is put on the paradigmatic change caused by photography. Walter Benjamin and Susan Sontag’s texts offer some keys in this respect. Photography’s parallel, film, is also analysed. Then, the other side of the technological experience, velocity, about which the Futurists were enthusiastic, is explored. As for the third topic, post-war technophobia and its correlative, poetical nostalgia for the origin, which can be described as «pre-apollonian», are discussed. From this point of view, some of Cortázar’s short stories, which express them as Dionysian delirium, are analysed. As for the fourth topic, a hypothesis is proposed to explain why and how artists of the Fantastic genre like Cortázar committed to politics. The keys to connect Fantastic art to the Revolution are found among the thoughts of Freud, Marcuse and Sartre. This development towards politics implies an inherent paradox however, in that the committed artists feel unsatisfied with the Revolution itself. Finally, the suburban poetics, a theory that Bruce Bégout established, comes into focus in search of other possibility of Revolution. In this respect, Cortázar’s works about suburban nomadism, such as Los autonautas de la cosmopista, are explored in respect to Robert Smithson’s experimental art.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Nous chercherons à retrouver une certaine image de la ville de Saint-Pierre, selon la vision de différents auteurs<br>During the eruption of Mount Pelee, the volcano on the island of Martinique, the city of Saint-Pierre and its thirty thousand inhabitants were wiped out by a volcanic cloud on May the 8th 1902. Known as "The Paris of the Antilles", or the "tropical Venice", The town personified France to America, suggesting its special status within the French colonies at that time. Would Saint-Pierre’s glow in literature have been the same without the eruption of Mount Pelee? Our research aims to provide a review of various aspects of the city of Saint-Pierre from literary geography, extended by the contributions of geopoetics and Geocriticism for. The concept of "landscape" dear to Michel Collot, will be a larger entry we will focus in the field of study that interests us, insofar as it seems to fill the gaps of the aforementioned theoretical tools. As part of a geography of literature will be useful to study the spatial context in which the works are produced. This angle of attack will be an opportunity to reflect on the peculiarities due to writing in postcolonial context. We understand the term "Geocriticism" broadly to study the representations of space in the texts themselves. It will then trace the outline of a real but not such a city that the author imagines and as it emerges through language. From geopoetics, we analyze the relationship between space and literary forms. We will compare the representations offered by various writers. We will try to find a specific image of the city of Saint-Pierre, according to various authors

Blair, Paul S. "Figura rerum : 'the pattern of the glory' : the theological contributions of Charles Williams." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6364.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to show that Charles Williams makes a significant contribution to theology, and it demonstrates the nature of that contribution. A pattern of theological themes centering on the Incarnation, emphasizing the humanity of Christ, is repeated throughout his works. For Williams, human beings are images of the coinherent Godhead. His theological anthropology further develops through his understanding of imaging, as shown for instance in the Incarnation, and in Dante's characterization of Beatrice as a God bearer. His view of images is built from Coleridge's understanding of the nature of a symbol. This picture of imaging is widely applied, first and foremost to relationships of love, seen as potential incarnate images of grace. Williams seeks to extend his picture to all relationships and, further, to whatever man must do to go beyond himself to an encounter with God. He believes that man is responsible for his brother, in practice by bearing his brother's burdens, with substitutionary acts of vicarious love. A further part of his thinking then views people as living in coinherent relationships, and the universe as a web of coinherent relations. He draws his examples of natural coinherent relations from the world of commerce with its exchange and substitution of labors and from the child living within its mother, and builds a picture of what he calls the City, a broader coinherent society. Coinherence begins and flows from the Trinity and the Incarnation and then is found in relationships between God and man: in the Church, in the future City of God, and in all Creation. The Fall brings about the breakdown of the coinherence of God and man and man and man, and that breakdown is a central characteristic of sin. Williams believes that a regenerated coinherence in Christ brings about a renewal of mankind.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the intersections of theories of place, space, and story. It is part ethnographic, part literary studies, and dives deeply into American history and literature, beginning with the industrial revolution in the 19th Century. It steps into theories and literature surrounding how we story ourselves into the world, focused in large part on the literary archetype that grows from the concept of the flâneur--Charles Baudelaire and Walter Benjamin's urban wanderer who walks both the city streets and art and literature to explore meaning and purpose of city and story, and to fight against a sometimes alienating place. My dissertation expands some of those notions, and explores the ways we expand and investigate our own literary geographies. Each chapter merges theory and practice in various ways of reading and writing space and story--from a walk across the city and its waterfront where I chronicle the history of the flâneur alongside the history of the economic and physical development of New York City; to a sit in a neighborhood café where I theorize how we layer (or "write") history, personal experience, and literature into familiar places; to a 24-hour ride along the 1-line subway, which becomes an extended metaphor that problematizes "meaning" in literature as I loop through a supposedly static space, barely moving from my seat from 8am to 8am. Each of these investigations intentionally blurs the lines between reading and writing, space and story, and theory and practice, in order to expand theoretical approaches to place and literature. Through this dissertation I hope to add to the theoretical body of work in studies of place, literature, and urban studies, and to challenge the ways that we discuss literary theory by offering approaches to these discussions in ways that situate them in a different sort of action.

Abstract:
Space can be read through text. Space is also constructed through text. Literary and critical theory has, however, emphasised time over space. However, space, place and location are crucial determining factors in any literary study. Through reference to theories of construction of place as well as writings on spatial history and the city I will discuss how place is created through text and how the urban environment affects literary production. Using the work of Michel Foucault (1986, 2002) on space and power, Michel de Certeau's approach to cities (2002) and WaIter Benjamin's (2002) theories on space, time and the city, as well as South African theoretical approaches to space and the city, I will attempt an analysis of place in chosen pieces of literature set in the postapartheid city by selected writers. I have chosen to focus on the cities of Durban and Johannesburg, and in particular the innercities, because it is here that major transformation in the use and representation of space has occurred. By looking at selected apartheid and postapartheid texts I will be able to analyse how the representation of literary space has altered with political and socio-economic changes. The time period I will look at primarily will be the postapartheid period. The interdisciplinary nature of this project means I will draw from literary criticism, critical theory, geography, sociology and economic history as well as elements of postcolonial and postmodem theory. The South African city today is a post-city; postcolonial and postapartheid. So too, the texts I have selected are post-texts, postmodem and post-struggle and I will conduct my analysis with this in mind. The concept of 'city' in literature is much more than just buildings and streets. It exists also in social relationships and links between people, both in the city and places outside of the city. The city is a set of social, political and cultural conditions that manifests itself in space and it is this aspect of 'city' which is represented in these texts that I will investigate. Through focusing on the autobiography Man Bitch (2001) by Johan van Wyk together with Never Been At Home (2001) by Zazah P. Khuzwayo and No Way Out (2001) by Zinhle Carol Mdakane all set in Durban, and Welcome to Our Hillbrow (2001) by Phaswane Mpe and the short story "Autopsy" (1996) by Ivan Vladislavic set in Johannesburg, I will investigate the representation of urban space in these texts of postapartheid literature. By way of introduction, I will examine relevant selected apartheid texts that deal with the cities of Durban (Lewis Nkosi's novel Mating Birds (1987)) and Johannesburg (selected poems of Mongane Wally Serote) and I will attempt to construct a literary image of the space of these cities under apartheid. A close reading of the texts selected will construct a clear picture of the current (and past) urban space through the medium of literature. It will be seen that major issues affecting South Africa's city inhabitants emerge as themes: AIDS, crime, migration and architectural degradation drive these narratives as does access to once restricted space.<br>Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2005.

Abstract:
Report submitted to the Faculty of the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Architecture 2014<br>Architecture is the appreciation for story-telling; fiction and literature, history, culture and conversation. It entails the unfolding of a plot, unfamiliar places and eccentric characters. These do not merely exist on dusty old pages in books but are an integral part of our imagination - our subconscious design. This report explores the role of the architect as the reader; and so, this thesis forms what I have ‘read’ this year. This thesis aims to interpret literature as a design methodology in order to understand site and develop a suitable architectural language. The process of oral traditions, written text and digitalised technology are used to deconstruct systems and principles that document change in architecture and the city. This project, The Doorn Paperback Project is located in a contested area set within the in-between yard spaces of New Doornfontein. The unsightly nature of the site gives rise to ephemeral slumming. The cracks that exist within the formal urban fabric are atypically inhabited by the marginalised. These hidden narratives of the people living on the site create new meaning to these abandoned and derelict spaces. The way in which people ‘hack’ the site and use it in ways opposed to what was originally intended forms the reality for which the architecture exists. The architecture needs to ‘tear down’ and ‘dismantle’ formal conditions on the site in order to mediate a space in which ‘life’ can be reinvigorated into the space. Thus the introduction of a literary program responds well to the educational and industrial conditions on the site.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a study of “performing the everyday life” in the writer Jia Pingwa’s well-known novel Ruined City (Feidu 废都). By adopting the sociologist Erving Goffman’s idea of dramaturgical interactions in The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, this thesis contends that the social interactions in Ruined City are all performed. I particularly pay attentions to the relationships involving the novel’s central character, the celebrity-writer and one of the four “cultural idlers” in Xijing, which is the ancient capital Xi’an the author lives in real life, Zhuang Zhidie, and the three women in his life— the wife Niu Yueqing, the mistress Tang Wan’er, and the housemaid Liu Yue. Considering Goffman’s idea, I consider Zhuang Zhidie performs various roles when he encounters with each of the women, and they in turn perform the corresponding role to fit in the performance environment Zhuang has regularized with his role and his definitions of situations. In a novel notorious for its graphic descriptions of sex, these relationships are also performed in sexual encounters, and presented with symbolic objects relevant to the characters' roles.<br>Graduate

Abstract:
The aim of this essay was to understand the thematic and discursive aspects of some literary chronicles of two Cape-Verdean authors, Dina Salústio and Daniel Medina and to prove the humanitarian and pedagogical aspects of the their writings. At first we did a study of theoretical contents about Portuguese chronicles with the aim to survey aspects concerning the evolution of this style throughout time, since the Middle Ages until Contemporary Era, always in a pragmatic perspective and we have discussed the characteristics which formed the style with emphasis on subjectivity, versatility, objectivity, style between oral and literary, everyday life and dialogism. Then, in methodological terms we opted to convoke the ethos of Amossy and Maingueneau to study the writings. Secondly, through ten Cape-Verdean literary chronicles, being five from each author we went on with the critical analysis from which we confirmed, from a thematic analysis, a humanitarian and pedagogical concern, once we noticed some troubles with problems concerning the idiosyncrasy of the Cape-Verdean people, such as the loss of values in terms of education and instruction whether in the bosom of the family or at school, a concern with the underprivileged, where we highlight orphan children whose parents are alive, the abandon of mental sick people and children who live in the streets, premature pregnancy, juvenile prostitution among others. The way the writers of chronicles positioned themselves concerning the approach of the themes allowed us to project the discursive ethos in these two sensitive personalities, sober and committed with the noble values which affect the human being. The same way, we have realized as relevant aspects of the writings, subjectivity, individuality and discursive personality, brevity, the dialog in a free indirect style, everyday life and literature combined with some rhetorical resources which allow us to verify the serious and ironic tones of the subjects which deal with thematic matters.

Abstract:
Z przeprowadzonych badań autorka wysnuła wniosek, że literatura sprawdza się bardziej w odniesieniu do turystyki niż wizerunku miasta.<br>The research issue of this thesis concerns the influence of literary potential on the image of the city and on tourism. The author’s first objective was to identify the literary potential of selected European cities, and then to consider how literature affects the image of cities and tourism, and to indicate best practices in this regard. In addition, a methodological objective was formulated, consisting in verifying different methods of studying literary potential in the contexts of image and tourism. The main case studies covered ten European cities: Paris, Barcelona, Stockholm, Warsaw, London, Prague, Amsterdam, Frankfurt am Main, Edinburgh and Dublin. The author concluded from her research that literature is of greater importance for tourism than for city image.

Thus to increase city competitiveness is an important lesson for city managers. Moreover, one of the effective ways is to develop tourism industry. Referred to previous studies, the image of the destination has been the critical factor to attract tourists, thus knowing how to shape the image of destination and further to develop local tourism marketing has become the top priory to city managers. Among the parts of cultural industry, music, media, and literature etc could be applied to shape the place image, however, only literature is the unavailable in previous research. This paper uses Taipei People which is written by Pai Shien-Yung as the text. Based on the scenery represented in the novel, we try to find Taipei city image, space structure and symbols. Finally we seek the meaning under literature landscape and used Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to analyze the relative importance of landscape elements, and further to provide suggestion to city managers for local tourism marketing.

Besides, even more importantly, every literary award enables people to see the social meanings behind a process of creating local subjectivity in terms of efforts of Bureau of Cultural Affairs and Government of Kaohsiung City: for example, literary awards not only promote creative writing of freshmen, but in some instance also make quality and quantity of local narrating rise, which in a multi-perspective, fashions Kaohsiung City with a particular oceanic images embodied in literature, and through these efforts above, helps this city away a danger of placelessness in the global context. In other words, these landscapes are the inspiration of literature writing, visible and signified symbols reminding natives of the importance and necessity of cultural preservation and experiencing a place by direct and in-person senses. Due to Ci-Jun and Gu-Shan areas become tourist spots recently, values and meanings of literary landscapes, ways of local narrating and narrating place, subjectivity of a place, and cultural marketing strategies are intensely close to a discourse of a “place,” and in this regard, this discourse is hence a depth delve worth re-examining and re-exploring.

Abstract:
博士<br>中國文化大學<br>中國文學系<br>105<br>"City writing" is one of many modern literary genres, which is characterized by applying urbanology to literary writing. Through the discussion of a theme, it is hoped that the multi-cultural styles of a contemporary city can be reflected. Based on the "space" theory in urbanology, this paper explores the connotation of "living space" written by the writers in the 1980s and the 1990s so as to understand the issues that those writers were concerned about and their care for the society. Using the theories of urban development, urbanology and urban spaces, this paper first discusses the "background" of the theme. The discussion of "background" includes two aspects, namely time and space. The author first uses "timelines" to understand the development process of literary writing of "living space" in Taipei City and then fills in the "spaces" with their respective political, economic and social situations in the 1980s and the 1990s. Through this study on the “external” edges, the author then deepens his understanding of the “inherent” meaning of the "text" authored by a particular writer. In the study of the "text" of the writers, the author first explores the literary writing about the "city landmarks." Taipei is not only the economic and political center of Taiwan, but also the hub for transportation and arts. For each "city landmark," the author picks up a representative literature book and then make an in-depth study on it, hoping to first understand the city life in general in the 1980s and the 1990s and then the details of the "living spaces" in terms of food, clothing, living, traveling, education, and recreation. It is meanwhile found that love and lusts are narrated in many of the books written in the 1980s and the 1990s. Considered as an important feature in the literary writing of the times, the author sets up a separate chapter to discuss this topic. Finally, every writer's writing strategy is discussed to understand his or her intention. In summary, this paper first clarifies the characteristics and connotation of "living spaces" of Taipei City described by writers in the 1980s and the 1990s and then further explores the "text" or “city imagery” in their books so as to accurately convey those writers' humanistic care and spirit toward Taipei City.

Abstract:
University of Technology Sydney. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.<br>Pavla moves uncertainly through Prague, a city on the brink of revolution in 1989. On November 17, she is on the streets with her lover Charlie and best friend Milena, along with tens of thousands of students, demanding freedom. That night, as the protest reaches fever pitch, Pavla and Charlie are cornered in a narrow side street and truncheoned. Pavla is taken to hospital where she gives birth to a baby daughter and sleeps for weeks. When she wakes, she has missed seeing the revolution unfold and Charlie has disappeared. Eleven years later, Pavla returns to Prague and needs to relearn how to move through the city in order to make sense of it. The theoretical essay mirrors the novella by examining questions of mobility and flânerie/flâneuserie, understood as a ‘way of reading the street.’ Flâneuserie is invoked as a literary metaphor for the mobile urban observer that is also connected with the influence of surrealism and questions of gender difference. The term has been used in a range of literatures to signify issues of changing city life, irrespective of time and place. Together, the novella and essay suggest that the protagonist/flâneuse, while sauntering through the flux of bodies, encountering the vitality of the city, as well as the exclusionary and disorienting practices enacted within it, grows and accumulates the power to transgress and re/write her own city narrative.
