Abstract:
AbstractPhrases deriving from literary quotations are sometimes included in language histories as contributions from famous writers, like Shakespeare. This paper will argue that the label “change from above” is still a useful label for the addition of literary phrases to the language, even if such an addition is not typical of the variationist changes for which the label was coined. This paper will also demonstrate that the process of incorporating a literary quotation into the language involves several alterations to the quotation’s form and meaning, and that these changes are also part of the “change from above” characterizing the adoption of literary phrases.

The paper focuses on the phenomenon of quoting Confucius, the classical Chinese thinker of the Western Zhou Dynasty. Firstly, it approaches the core issue of quotes and historicity of the “master said” narrative which marked the tradition of quoting Confucius and understanding his heritage through the form of quotes. In the core part of the paper, a selection of ten quotes that most commonly circulate on the Internet are analysed and traced to their most probable sources, while the paper then concludes by approaching the problem of misquoting from a historical and philosophical point of view.

Abstract:
AbstractIn his Quaestiones Convivales, a sympotic text recounting more than 75 purportedly historical banquets set in Rome and Greece, Plutarch represents intellectuals engaging with early lyric (melic, iambic, and elegiac poetry) as they express broader views about aesthetic taste. In contrast to Homeric poetry, which is commonly quoted by all characters in the symposium but proportionally more by lower-ranking participants, those who quote lyric appear to be exclusively individuals of higher status. The paper provides specific metrics that further illuminate this phenomenon, and it makes a number of suggestions regarding the relationship between literary taste and social status in Plutarch’s Quaestiones Convivales.

Abstract:
Literature, also created with children in mind, to quote Kazimierz Brodziński, is a mirror of the age and the nation. Reacting to the change of cultural paradigm, it opens the borders, meets the current needs of the audience, adapts its repertoire to their interests and new narrative practices. Contemporary technological ubiquity generates an asymmetry of semiotic matter and communicative context, which realizes displacements in the area triad: culture-literature-media, thus triggering transgressions in literary texts. The questioning of the conventions of writing and printing causes modifications in the architectural structure of readings, which become on-linear, use the language of old and new media, and follow the example of audiovisual productions. The article highlights some of the transformations taking place in literature aimed at the on-adult reader in times of a culture that is changing anthropologically in spectacular and audiovisual way.

Abstract:
Jerome and Ambrose often quote from the Song of Songs in their ascetic treatises. The writings of Ambrose on virginity contain no fewer than 130 quotations from or allusions to the poem. Jerome’s letter 22 to the young virgin Eustochium includes around thirty references to it. It seems paradoxical for the Fathers to use the erotic images of the Song of Songs to encourage young women to keep their virginity. How can we explain this phenomenon? Were the Fathers simply seduced by the nuptial images of the poem? If so, Ambrose and Jerome were not the first. Before them Methodius of Olympus and Athanasius had already applied the Song of Songs to virginal life: Methodius in his Symposium and Athanasius in his letters to virgins. Another possibility is that Ambrose and Jerome quote from the Song of Songs because the poem was used in the consecration of virgins in their day. This is the question which is discussed below.

Morse, Daniel Lee. "Not quite white : Jewish literary identity, new immigration and otherness in America, 1890-1930." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9564.

Abstract:
America’s ‘long early twentieth century’ (1890-1945) was a period of intense industrialization, urbanization, and immigration which fundamentally altered the character of the nation. Between 1900 and 1924, which saw the curtailing of immigration from southern and eastern Europe via the passage of the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act (successor to 1921’s stop-gap Emergency Quota Act), more than 14 million people flocked to the U.S. in search of economic opportunity, social equality, and freedom from religious and political oppression. Descendants of these ‘new immigrants,’ as they were called, were by the late twentieth century a staple of white American suburbia, but their progenitors were variously considered ‘off-white,’ ‘dark-white,’ or non-white, with attendant connotations of mental, physical, and moral inferiority. This research examines texts, authored by Jewish immigrants such as Abraham Cahan, Anzia Yezierska, Rose Cohen, and Mary Antin, which were published between 1890 and 1930, when the onset of the Great Depression saw a rise in anti-Semitism that contributed to the decline in popularity of ‘up by the bootstraps’ Americana whose narratives chronicled, ostensibly, social assimilation and cultural integration; it considers the ramifications of writing in English for a native audience, which frequently alienated Jewish immigrants from their peers, and analyzes the manner in which the United States’ shifting social mores coincided with—and facilitated—new immigrants’ reappraisal of religion, education, commerce, and family life in the ‘new world’ of the west. It argues that the ambivalence contained within many of these texts was both a reaction to nativist prejudices and an effort to expose misconceptions present on both sides of the wildly popular Americanization movement, as well as exploring the way that such narratives attempted the redefinition of American philanthropic, educational and civic paradigms—the preponderance of which passionately espoused rhetoric of equality while reinforcing the stratification of the United States’ class system—into modes of interaction that accommodated difference while seeking to establish common ground upon which could be built a more inclusive, multiethnic future. Finally, it addresses the continuing relevance of these works as texts which both predict and presage modern modes of social interaction and discusses their future in an evolving literary canon that has, historically speaking, been an agent of western patriarchal hegemony.

Abstract:
We intend, as it is traditionally done in cultural and gender studies, to connect literary genres and gender by analyzing Angelica Gorodischer’s narrative work (1928), an Argentinian contemporary female writer. This feminist female writer undoes normative models in order to question the very logic of categorization, in literary genres as well as in heteronormative social representations. Indeed, the social field and the literary canon are defined by the naturalization of a domination scheme. Indeed, the literary canon, linked with the social field, is built from domination schenes, which become invisible and out of history thanks to a naturalization process. The categorization logic of this process thus strengthens the feeling of a hierarchical organization. We analyse the social and literary fields in which this female writer evolves. She represents a rupture and questions the legitimacy of multiple centres while keeping a peripheral position. Then, we study more precisely the way she considers norm and literary genres by analyzing the generic modulations she uses in her writing, starting from a specific generic background. We then focus on the inter or transgeneric process the feminist female writer’s texts implement to undo, in a post-modern logic, categories and hierarchies. By doing so, she deviates from the canon, creating anamorphosis process which bring out the limits of genres and disturb the reader’s expectations, renewing this canon

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the potential existence of a French written literature from Vietnam. In exploring these singular works from this country, our aims are to highlight their specific position in the literary field. The marginalization of these works emerges as a key point to explain their origin as well as the consequences on their reading and broadcasting. The difficulty to constitute a separate field in the national Vietnamese literature or to be fully integrated in the French literature is evident. The oscillation of a particular work or a group of works between these two statuses was the foundation of our analysis. In addition, while they displayed defined specificities, they are not considered as an individual field in the national Vietnamese literature. What should be the future of such literary style? In view of a better understanding of its singularity, we specifically analyzed the works of three of the most famous contemporary women writers in this field: Kim Lefèvre, Anna Moï and Linda Lê. While their initial purpose was not to be a part of this literary trend, these authors used different ways to achieve works that could be classified in similar manner. This illustrates the difficulty to integrate them into a specific literary field. To analyze their specific position in the Francophone critical field, we constantly had to perform numerous critical incursions, which explains the large amount of bibliography. This thesis prepares and opens the way for further explorations

Augier-Grimaud, Johana. Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040132.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study reexamines on the concept of theatricality often used about the Satyrica to try to specifyappearances and methods. For behind the visible simplicity of the term and the everyday acceptance of its use inrelation to this work, there hides a plurality of processes. The theatricality of the Satyrica takes on three forms. Itdefines itself spontaneously as the re-Use of codes particular to the funny dramatic genres from which Petroniusborrows situations, themes and linguistic processes. This first theatricality is complicated by its anchoring in adirected narrative universe, whose concerns it shares with those of the satiric genre. The falling back on theatricalelements outlines an excessive and inauthentic society, and thus sees itself filtered by the decadent world topos. And it is exactly because in the world of the Satyrica the traditional values are null and void that classicalliterature is obsolete. The way is then opens to the third theatricality, intrinsically connected to parody. It ismainly carried by the voice of the narrator, to whom the excessive practice of declamation entailed a systematicprojection to a fictional otherworld. The fracture existing from now on between reality and its perception has adouble consequence: on the one hand all the situations of everyday life can be reduced to representations ofliterary reference scenes ; on the other hand it deconstructs the traditional literature through clichés. Thistheatricality allows Petronius to renew literature and to lay the foundations for the novelistic genre

Bergue, Viviane. "La quête : mythe central de la fantasy." Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013TOU20045.

Full text
Abstract:
Fantasy is now one of the major literary genres of imaginative fiction and one of the most prolific. Claiming to be the mythic literature of our time, it is mainly inspired by mythological narratives and fairy-tales, and it often organises its stories around a central quest. Since that quest constantly reappears in Fantasy space-times, often implies mythic supernatural beings, such as Elves, and becomes the object of a tale about a lost past, it functions as a genuine myth inside the genre. The present study intents to analyse the Fantasy quest myth in order to highlight its main aspects, and, through them, the favourite themes of Fantasy fiction. Through the comparative analysis of J.R.R. Tolkien’s «The Lord of the Rings» and «The Silmarillion», Ursula K. Le Guin’s «Earthsea Series» and Léa Silhol’s «La Glace et la Nuit. Opus un – Nigredo», the Fantasy quest myth is replaced in the literary history. Besides the analysis shows that, despite its apparent archaic aspects, Fantasy fiction is a modern genre and a relevant discourse about human condition

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to analyze the opinion upon articles produced by senior elementary school students from a state school in São Paulo, Brazil. It focuses on a point of view regarding the theme \"The Impeachment of Dilma Rousseff \" in which the dialogic relations were established by different voices found in speeches shown in the printed and digital media, between April and May 2016. The central theoretical framework is based on the concepts set by M. Bakhtin and the Circle such as the sphere of circulation\", \"utterance\", \"quoted speech\" as well as on the ideological perspective of Brian Street literacy studies. The opinion article as discourse gender is prescribed in the Brazilian National Curricular Parametres (PCNs) as an argumentative text to be taught in the practices of reading and writing production. This research displayed a didactic dialogic proposal to four 9th grade groups which was divided in three different moments: the reading of the compilation, researches and discussion on the texts; text production (version 1); revision and text production (version 2). Considering the conception of writing as a process of responsive understanding 39 articles were selected based on two criteria: i) the quoted speech: paraphrase, the use of quotation marks and copy; ii) the expressive formulation in the titles. The analysis of the apprehension of the speeches on the collection considered the active engendering of the subjects in the production of meanings and the different readers of the article: classmates and the teacher. In the set of the opinion articles regarding the theme Dilma Rousseffs impeachment, four types of argument were identified: i) paraphrase; ii) the use of quotes in the mark of the others speech, iii) copy of excerpts from the compilation; iv) valuation positioning in the titles. The result of students production showed a diversity of positions in favour or against the polarized political situation between pros and cons about Dilmas impeachment. The argumentative resources recovered the tense and conflicting debates have taken place on the streets and in the Brazilian National Congress. And they showed different understandings of the same information, signaling that the writing project is not detached from the socio-historical contexts of literacy practices of students, but reflect and refract the source texts. Understanding each text as a response to the others speech is the dialogic activity proposed: a work on the political speech in the Portuguese class.

Abstract:

In a comparative perspective, the choice of the other cultural area is the American Born Chinese Literature, or what is known widely in the United States as the Asian American Literature. These novels seem to have common characteristics which allow us to postulate the existence of an emerging literature. Abstract:
Fragmentation and alienation: recurring themes in the postcolonial literature, are represented by the content and the form of the studied literary works in this research. Within a historical and fictional setting, the novels of Chinua Achebe and V.S. Naipaul set the fragmented and alienated postcolonial figures in different places and surroundings. The quest for identity of these postcolonial figures, between tradition and modernization, has caused their uprooting. In fact, in the novels of these two writers, the postcolonial figures, who are torn between the Occident and the Orient, are geographically and culturally alienated. Hence, they are unstable and are in a never-ending quest. The setting in the postcolonial novel is itself fragmented so that it alienates more the postcolonial figures who try to make an end to this alienation. The double culture – oriental and occidental – does not only participate in losing the cultural identity, but also in losing the figures’ ones. While meeting the Other or the Occidental, the characters of Achebe and Naipaul try to hide their « black skin » under a « white mask » through the mimicry of this Other. This literature stands out by its hybridization, its intertextuality, as well as its linguistic aspect, which has turned into a dialogic literature, in a discourse with the occidental literature and notably the colonial one. Such an indigenous literature, revealed in a foreign language, shows an attachment and a detachment. The non-linearity plays an important role in this fiction, given that the tales are distorted and fragmented like the major characters of these stories. In this way, one can say that through varied thematic and stylistic features these two postcolonial writers have succeeded in presenting to readers the alienation and fragmentation of postcolonial figures within their surroundings and in their era

In our early 21th century, an increasingly number of writers gets a real enthusiasm for woman-related themes. More precisely, their purpose is to underline the identity quest of women in our society. This kind of literature uncovers a constant involvement of body and sexuality closely linked to society and to cultural schemes that society imposes - thus leading these authors to hold an innovative discourse about women. Our research aims to show how a literary discourse, drawing from actual sociocultural, feminist and psychoanalytic discourses, conceives the Woman issue and which representation of woman it can create. At the hands of this reflection about the Woman issue and her identity, the study focuses on three female authors’ novels, Virginie Despentes, a french writer, Lucia Extebarría, a spanish writer and Maïssa Bey, an algerian French-speaking writer. The woman being is portrayed in her relations with male violence but also with her own violence linked to her relation to body and sexuality, and through human struggles and a social and cultural alienation. The female character is lonely, confined to an identity in which she does not recognize herself anymore and that she rejects. The quest for self-knowledge and for self-recognition lets its longings emerge, in contradiction with their remit. In the end of each novel, woman’s individualization is imaged through a takeover of speech. Self-reconstruction can only be possible thanks to a control of speech about oneself and the individuation quest has to keep going

Curtin, Mary Elizabeth. "Dissidence by Design: Literary Renovations of the "Good Taste" Movement." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/35726.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the literary responses to the British “good taste” movement in the work of Aldous Huxley, Evelyn Waugh, and John Betjeman. Bolstered by the increased prominence and influence of design experts in the early-twentieth century, critics and designers sought to improve public taste in Britain. The didactic and rhetorical strategies these taste reformers employed gradually convinced Britons that their nation, which lagged behind its European neighbours in accepting modern design, was in the throes of a “taste crisis.” The increased authority of design experts, the public enthusiasm for decoration, and the growth of the market for household goods led not only to a widespread fascination with design, but also to the formulation of an increasingly narrow and orthodox definition of “good taste.” I analyze these authors’ critical and literary writing, relying, in many cases, on their unpublished or neglected work in order to reveal the development of their taste theories. I argue that these writers, dissatisfied with what they perceived to be the “good taste” movement’s stultifying and homogenizing effects, produced a “dissident” taste theory in reaction to the consensual and codified notion of “good taste.” Chapter One considers Huxley’s often overlooked role as the editor of House & Garden magazine in the context of his early fiction and his gradual conversion to mysticism. Chapter Two examines the architectural novels of Evelyn Waugh, noting, in particular, the inherent tensions he navigated between modernity and tradition, Philistinism and theory, theology and aesthetics. Chapter Three studies John Betjeman’s roles as critic, poet, guide-book writer, and preservationist, charting the development of his tastes from international modernism to local eclecticism. Rather than accepting the easy distinctions between “good and bad” taste, Huxley, Waugh, and Betjeman—themselves so often criticized for being unyieldingly absolute in their worldviews—attempted instead to articulate a “taste between,” one that fused the aesthetic, ethical, and psychic components of taste in an imaginative spectrum, rather than an orthodox system.

Abstract:
Giovanni Boccaccio is quoted several times in Castiglione’s Cortegiano, but all these mentions are inserted in two specific contexts: on the one hand, the debate on literary language, developed in the letter of dedication to don Michel De Silva and in the first book; on the other hand, the definition of the joke in book II. Starting from these premises, this essay analyses the meanings of Boccaccio’s presence in the Cortegiano. It shows that Castiglione’s treatise provides two different and concurrent representations of the author of the Decameron: a positive one, connected to the ‘questione della lingua’, that offers Boccaccio as a promoter of the usage (‘uso’); a critical one, deriving from the theory of the ‘facezia’, that makes Boccaccio a challenging and challenged model.

Abstract:
The background color of Russian literature and Russian painting art in the 19th century is gloomy and heavy, and there exists text intertextuality between them, which is different from single text and single painting. Literary words and painting invisible words quote, permeate, insinuate and rewrite each other. Literature is the writing of painting, and painting is the color of literature. The main line of literature development and the main line of painting development seem to be twisted together like a rope, presenting spiral development, closely linked, complementary and inseparable. The same value orientation and aesthetic purpose have intertextuality, mutual influence, mutual interaction and mutual transformation, no matter in creation method, theme, artistic style or creation background. Direct description or sharp pen, or by the protagonist of indirect irony, using realistic and critical realism creation method, revealing the tsarist autocracy savage, dissatisfaction with the reality in protest of rebellion, as well as being bullied and oppressed pain and struggle, at the same time reflects the immortality of the Russian national literature and art achievement.

Abstract:
Statistics education is a fast evolving discipline, and major advances have been made over the past two decades regarding reform of the introductory statistics course. There is now growing consensus that the introductory statistics course should seek to develop statistical literacy. The objective of this pilot study was to explore and describe self-reports of course learning outcomes and assessment strategies, as well as the extent to which instructors of introductory statistics at the college level emphasize statistical literacy. The results revealed that for a considerable proportion of instructors, what they think they are teaching is at variance with what and how they teach. If this gap is not addressed, it will quite likely result in students not being adequately prepared in statistical literacy, as well as misrepresentation of the type and quality of instruction. This gap or conflict between what instructors think they do and what they actually do, can be viewed as pedagogical dissonance, which can be attributed to a multiplicity of factors, addressed herein.

Abstract:
Financial literacy is well-known as a crucial skill today. Since an early age, people are exposed to the management of financial products and digital platforms, which have facilitated access to financial services. However, there is a prominent lack of knowledge about how to manage them wisely. The lack of financial knowledge and proper education in this regard boost people to make financial mistakes that finally impact their decision making process. For this reason, the teaching of financial issues has taken on an important role in the educational policies in many countries. This process is quite important for young people because it will provide them the proper tools to making the right decision about managing financial products and services in their adult life. Therefore, the present research aims to study the level of financial literacy among high school students. To this end, an internationally validated diagnostic tool was identified for determining the level of financial literacy, to establish a baseline as recommended by several authors. This tool was applied to high school students in the city of Bucaramanga (Colombia) and its metropolitan area. Higher education institutions involved contemplated in their Institutional Educational Project (PEI) a training in economics and finance to determine students’ levels of financial literacy. Based on the obtained results, the level of financial literacy of the students was assessed. The findings show the need to join forces in the implementation of financial education in Colombia, through the articulation of stakeholders in the development of a comprehensive educational program to achieve the desired objectives, as well as the important role of parents’ involvement in the implementation of these programs. Consequently, the research recommends the implementation of new policies to evaluate the performance of financial education in the country and its real effect on people’s knowledge and financial behavior.

Abstract:
While speaking of Pu Songling’s (1640–1715) impact on the Chinese literature one can’t help mentioning his short stories about fox turnskins and other wonders, known in English as Strange Tales from the Chinese Studio (Liao Zhai zhi yi). Commonly here the general survey concludes, and the main efforts are directed to analysis of the author’s pencraft and concealed political implications, since most of the plots are believed to be not original but adopted from earlier oeuvre. Thus the two major implied notions can be worded in the following fashion: 1) Strange Tales are the only work by Pu Songling to be mentioned and 2) they happen to be quite a secondary piece of literature based on borrowed stories and twisted about to serve the new main objective — mockery on social and political routine of the author’s present. The chief idea of the article is to cast a doubt on both of these notions and to show diversity and richness of Pu Songling’s genres and subjects as well as finding out the basis of these texts’ attractiveness for readers for more than 300 years. The other goal of the paper is to give a short overview of Pu Songling’s translations into Russian and their influence on the literary tradition of modern Russian prose. The main focus is put on the difficulties any translator is to face, on the quest for the optimal form of reproduction of the original’s peculiarities. Since the language of Pu Songling’s stories is Classical Chinese (wenyan), the author’s mastership in reproduction of different speech styles including common vernacular is also to be mentioned and analyzed.

Abstract:
This article is focused on analysis of the hypothesis of the local song folklore origins of the famous poetic phenomenon chuci (elegies/songs of Chu) that represents the literary heritage of the southern (Yangtze Basin) region of the Ancient China (the Zhou epoch, 11th–3rd centuries B. C.) and is associated with the emergence of the Chinese poetry. Although today the thesis about the folklore origins of chuci, or rather of the poetic pieces presented by the Chuci (Verses/Elegies of Chu, Songs of the South) collection, is generally accepted, the author argues that, first, during the 1st–7th centuries A. D. the chuci poetry was stable considered within the Chinese book knowledge to be created by exclusively the literary genius of Qu Yuan (4th–3rd centuries B. C.), the great poet of the Chu Kingdom (11th–3rd centuries B. C.). Secondly, the views on chuci as an autochthonous (“southern”) poetic tradition dating back to the local folk art emerged in the 12th–13th centuries and finally established itself in the Chinese literature studies of the first third of the 20th century, all these under the influence of the ideological processes, caused by synchronic historical and political events. Thirdly, although the existence of developed song-poetic folklore in Chu Kingdom seems quite permissible, it for some reason remained out of fixation by that day written sources, including transmitted texts and archaeological materials (epigraphic inscription and excavated manuscripts). Therefore, almost nothing is known as a matter of fact of the hypothetic Chu song folklore what makes it impossible to recognize its true influence on origins and further on evolution of the chuci tradition.

Abstract:
Primary school teachers’ science competence remains a highly relevant theoretical and practical problem. Although the general curricula and educational standards of Lithuanian general education school set quite high requirements for the process of primary school science education, the science competence of teachers raises reasonable concerns. It has to be stated that in university primary education study programmes, insufficient attention is paid to the natural science component. This leads to a possible lack of preparation for pre-service primary school teachers in science education. A pilot study conducted at the beginning of 2020, in which 107 students from two Lithuanian universities participated, showed that their scientific knowledge was poor and insufficient. Particularly weak was subject knowledge from the field “Nature research”, and also knowledge related to animate and inanimate nature. An assumption can be made that science literacy of pre-service primary education teachers is not sufficiently developed at university, which is one of the factors limiting the quality of children’s science education. There are probably two main reasons for this situation: insufficient science education in general education schools, and insufficient training of students in the field of science education for pre-service primary school teachers. Abstract:
Abstract Proliferation of plastic in parts, and the ability to mold such parts of great complexity at little cost penalty, has resulted in growing use of integral attachments (or so called snap-fits) in designs. The diversity of integral attachment features and the potential applications of this assembly method have made it appear that design possibilities may be unbounded. This paper extends an “attachment level” methodology first articulated by researchers at General Motors by enumerating all possible design options for 2-D (rectilinear) and 3-D (prismatic) polyhedral as well as 2-D and 3-D curvilinear parts using a recently developed hierarchical classification scheme. It was found that there are only 343 possible interface combinations that will allow attachment, of which only 150 are totally unique if one recognizes the interchangeability of attachment features between mating components comprising the assembly. Thus, for a seemingly infinite or unbounded group of possible real integral attachment applications, the choices are, in fact, limited to a quite manageable number. This allows designers to truly optimize a design by considering literally every possibility after working down through the classification hierarchy.

Full text
Abstract:
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is increasingly being used as a technique to install pipeline through challenging conditions. With this increased use, several post-installation geotechnical issues have, quite literally, surfaced, often many months or years following the original installation. These issues include sinkhole development around the entry/exit points for the HDD operations and settlement of the surface above the HDD bore path. Both can be attributed to two major factors, those involving unfavourable ground conditions and those involving problematic installation procedures. Several examples of each of these factors are described along with mitigation measures designed to prevent both sinkhole and settlement from occurring following HDD installation. Case histories from two large HDD crossings are subsequently presented which illustrate the potential magnitude of these issues and the steps that are often required for repair; the first from a crossing of the Fraser River outside of Vancouver, Canada, and the second from a crossing of a major river in north-central Argentina. In both of these cases, large sinkholes formed behind the HDD exit points, resulting in property damage and possibly threatening neighboring utilities. Site investigation and design techniques implemented to minimise the potential for sinkhole development and settlement are discussed, and several remediation options used in the cases histories are presented.

Abstract:
Globalization and technology have changed educational settings, and information and communication technology (ICT) literacy has become inevitable in this new era of teaching and learning. ICT is believed to help to transfer educational environments into learner-centered ones and to enhance the quality of teaching learning and management in education. Over the last fifteen years, Turkish education system has been undergoing some reforms both in schools and universities, trying to equip education settings with at least a projector, a computer and Internet access. The survey presented in this article examines language teachers’ beliefs and attitudes towards ICT in teaching English at a state university. It aims to better understand the challenges teachers face in integrating ICT in teaching and learning and thus to search for the answer to the question ‘What are the main components of quality management in ICT use in higher education language learning settings?’. A semi-structured interview and focus group discussions were used to collect data. Twenty-eight teachers participated in the survey and the results showed that the majority of the participants had positive attitudes towards the integration of ICT in language learning environments; yet some of the teachers found the practice not that easy concerning finding the most suitable materials while preparing and delivering lessons. They also stated that their lack of classroom management skills, bad student behavior hindering learning and students’ lack of using ICT made the integration of ICT into education settings quite challenging and added that the lessons were quite short to implement ICT strategies appropriately. Another noteworthy result was that the majority of the teachers’ understanding of effective use of ICT in class seemed rather limited and unproductive. Therefore, the teachers were looking for support from the management to provide them with the required equipment and technical support when necessary. They also needed exchange of experience in learning of ICT skills in language teaching, which all showing that quality management in ICT use needs developing. Concerning all these, the researcher suggests ideas to improve the quality management in ICT use in language learning in higher education institutions.
