Butler, James Odelle. "Name, place, and emotional space : themed semantics in literary onomastic research." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4165/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research uses literary resources as evidence against the argument that names are potentially semantically meaningless entities. A secondary goal is to highlight and discuss the value of onomastics from both a literary and linguistic perspective. The thesis proposes a methodology for the assessment of literary sources based on genre, arguing that names, and genre in turn, may be defined through their respective engagement with thematic considerations, providing a relevant critical structure by which to assess the application or construction of names within fiction. The proposed methodology is first used to assess the placenames within dystopian literature, taking Orwell’s 1984 (1949), Huxley’s Brave New World (1931), and Zamyatin’s We (1924) as exemplar texts for the genre. The emblematic themes identified within the onymic patterns (propaganda, classification and regulation) all share a common thematic root: power and control. In order to assess the validity of this approach, the fictional worlds depicted in a selection of other dystopic texts are also examined. A special study is made of terrapsychology and fictional ontology, as well as of three distinct subgenres of the gothic. Case studies of the latter are each focused around a different ontological mode (fictional, part-fictional, and non-fictional placenames), covering the fantastic world of Peake’s Gormenghast setting (two texts published in 1946 and 1950), Lovecraft’s variant New England county (six texts, 1922 to 1936), and the representative contemporary setting of Brook’s World War Z (2006), respectively.

Louw, Denise Elizabeth Laurence. "A literary study of paranormal experience in Tennyson's poetry." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002292.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis is that many of Tennyson's apparently paranormal experiences are explicable in terms of temporal lobe epilepsy; and that a study of the occurrence, in the work of art, of phenomena associated with these experiences, may be useful in elucidating the workings of the aesthetic imagination. A body of knowledge relevant to paranormal experience in Tennyson's life and work, assembled from both literary and biographical sources, is applied to a Subjective Paranormal Experience Questionnaire, compiled by Professor V.M. Neppe, in order to establish the range of the poet's apparently "psychic" experiences. The information is then analysed in terms of the symptomatology of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and the problems of differential diagnosis are considered. It is shown, by means of close and comparative analyses of a number of poems, that recurring clusters of images in Tennyson's poetry may have their genesis in TLE. These images are investigated in terms of modern research into altered states of consciousness. They are found to be consistent with a "model" of the three stages of trance experience constructed by Professor A.D. Lewis-Williams to account for shamanistic rock art in the San, Coso and Upper Paleolithic contexts. My study of the relevant phenomena in the work of a nineteenth century English poet would seem to offer cross-cultural verification of the applicability of the model to a range of altered-state contexts. This study goes on to investigate some of the psychological processes which may influence the way in which pathology is manifested in the poetry of Alfred Tennyson. But, throughout the investigation, the possible effects of literary precursors and of other art forms are acknowledged. The subjective paranormal phenomena in Tennyson's poems are compared not only with some modern neuropsychiatric cases, but also with those of several nineteenth-century writers who seem to have had similar experiences . These include Dostoevsky and Edward Lear, who are known to have been epileptics, and Edgar Allan Poe. Similarity between some aspects of Tennyson's work and that of various Romantic poets, notably Shelley, is stressed; and it is tentatively suggested that it might be possible to extrapolate from my findings in this study to a more general theory of the "Romantic" imagination.

Falzon, Ruth. "Early educators' awareness and knowledge of structured multisensory literary instruction." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2012. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/10837/.

Full text
Abstract:
Literacy is a 21st Century fundamental human right and children who struggle to break the code to literacy continue to be challenged in learning and to experience a poorer quality of life. In spite of a whole body of literature concluding that structured multisensory literacy instruction (SMSLI), which embraces basic linguistic knowledge, is effective in improving reading skills, early educators are either unaware or misinformed about explicit language knowledge they need to know in order to address early literacy in the classroom. When compared to studies on reading, little research on teachers’ knowledge and early literacy instruction has been done. Such research has never been addressed on a national scale. The author decided to undertake this research path following years of immersion in education in Malta and perceived lacunae in early educators’ knowledge. The purpose of this research is to explore early educators’ awareness and knowledge of SMSLI. A mixed methodology approach was employed in order to explore this issue on a national level (questionnaires), as well as investigate professionals’ experiences of the effect of SMSLI training on their professional development (focus groups). Descriptive statistics indicate an incomplete and incorrect body of knowledge. Results highlight marked deficits in basic language constructs knowledge and awareness of SMSLI, and indicate that exposure to training increases the required language constructs to address SMSLI. In theory, the conclusion from this research is that awareness of SMSLI leads to students’ increased reading success. Professionals indicating knowledge in SMSLI evidenced more confidence in knowledge and abilities to teach early reading skills than they actually have. Relevant recommendations for formal training, continued professional development and further research with professionals, parents and pupils’ literacy scores are suggested.

image of the minorities, i.e., Armenians and Greeks, the Turks being other. The research is carried out on the basis of the literary works produced by the intellectuals / authors of these minorities. The historical context, which is taken as the reference point for these discourses, covers the period from the late Ottoman Period up to the early 1960s. Furthermore, the study explores how the ethnic minorities constructed their identities in the last century. This study also seeks to find out which discourses have been the leading ones through history and to determine the continuities and ruptures in the use of themes by these ethnic groups to construct their identities. In addition, policies and ideologies attributed to the state by the minorities are tackled with the literary works and main discursive elements used by minority groups to (de)construct Turkish national identity are explored.

Hammarfelt, Björn. "Following the Footnotes : A Bibliometric Analysis of Citation Patterns in Literary Studies." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för ABM, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-170504.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an in-depth study of the possibilities of applying bibliometric methods to the research field of literary studies. The four articles that constitute the backbone of this thesis focus on different aspects of references and citations in literary studies: from the use of references in the text to citation patterns among 34 literature journals. The analysis covers both an Anglo-Saxon context as well as research in Swedish literary studies, and the materials used include Web of Science data, references in the Swedish literature journal TFL (Tidskrift för Litteraturvetenskap) and applications to the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). A study is also made of the influence of one single publication—Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations—and its impact in literary studies and in wider academia. The results from the four articles are elaborated upon using a theoretical framework that focuses on differences in the social and intellectual organization of research fields. According to these theories literary studies can be described as a fragmented, heterogenic, interdisciplinary and ‘rural’ field with a diverse audience. The fragmented and rural organization of the field is reflected in low citation frequencies as well as in the difficulties in discerning research specialities in co-citation mappings, while the analysis of the intellectual base (highly cited authors) is an example of the heterogenic and interdisciplinary character of the field, as it includes authors from many fields across the humanities and the social sciences. The thesis emphasizes that bibliometric studies of research fields in the humanities need to incorporate non-English and non-journal publications in order to produce valid and fair results. Moreover, bibliometric methods must be modified in accordance with the organization of research in a particular field, and differences in referencing practices and citation patterns ought to be considered. Consequently, it is advised that bibliometric measures for evaluating research in these fields should, if used at all, be applied with great caution.

Abstract:
This paper takes the position that creativity can be enhanced by multimedia. Computer software was designed and a study was conducted to measure that proposition. The author used participant self-analysis as a means to gather data on creativity enhancement holding to the presupposition that people can tell when they are creative and when their creativity is inhibited. The results of the study supported the belief that multimedia and the software designed for that purpose was able to enhance creativity.

A research on literary theory of Tang-Song school in Ming dynasty." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2018. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/566.

Full text
Abstract:
In the field of researching "Tang-Song School" (唐宋派) now, scholars tend to view the object via an angle that they are just debate and struggle between schools, juxtaposing "Tang-Song School" with "Classical school" (復古派) in a binary opposition and thinking that literary claims of four leaders' are pinpointed on the "Classical school". This discourse undoubtedly has its plausible proof yet the main overlook is that Wang(王慎中), Tang(唐順之), Mao(茅坤) and Gui(歸有光) are independent writers and literary theorists whose differences and human concerns are neglected in such a grand narrative which only puts emphasis on their homogeneity and their countering role against "Classical school". This thesis, hence, is going to examine the four's literary claims altogether with their relations to the society, the institution and the individual life respectively so as to show the difference of literary claims among the four. With the foundation of knowing their differences, it is proved that amidst the social atmosphere of "QinHan is the best for learning prose"(文必秦漢), Wang, Tang, Mao and Gui indeed aspired to found a literary learning path that approaches QinHan's level through studying Tang-Song prose from their respective angles. The thesis is divided into 6 chapters. Chapter 1 is introduction which shows the motive and value of this research. Chapter 2 will firstly discuss why Gui You Guang does not make acquaintance with Wang, Tang, Mao so as to show the different nature and occupations of theirs in the Ming literary community. Based on this clarification, the features of Tang-Song School as a school is called into re-examination that "a camp which shares similar belief" is more suitable to define their relationship, and subsequently, it is hoped to show that claims of Tang-Song Camp also aim to react to the decline of "Eight-part Essay" (八股文) except echoing to the literary trend of imitating the ancient classics. Chapter 3 discusses the fours' claims of how to construct a renaissance path from TangSong to QinHan. Chapter 4 discusses the theoretical idea of Tang-Song Camp's "regarding classic work as present work" (以古文為時文), telling how four theorists view the decline of "Eight-part Essay" in their respective angles and why they finally too share this same conclusion. Chapter 5 discusses how Tang-Song Camp faces the plight of classical prose writing. Until the period of Mid-Ming, Ming Dynasty has been found for almost a hundred year, classical prose writing however remains silent and is not actively embraced. Taige School (台閣派) and "Classical school" have led the literary community once but the problem of decline have never been solved. For levitating the level of classical prose writing, Tang-Song Camp then raises the idea of learning Tang-Song prose with the hope of saving classical prose writing from the plight of plagiarism. Due to the four have their own understandings and perspectives on the decline issue, they suggest different strategies to enhance the quality of classical prose writing. This chapter then focuses on these strategies to manifest the differences among four literary claims. And lastly, Chapter 6 is remark which aims to discuss ways of writing literature history and limits of Tang Song Camp's theories.

The present text, entitled Letramentos in school: a proposal for the teaching of Portuguese Language from the literary chronicles, presents a proposal for a pedagogical intervention in teaching reading and writing, from textual/discursive genre literary Chronicle, in a class of ninth grade, a public school Hall of Santaluz-Ba. Through a didactic sequence adapted based on Schneuwly and Dolz (2004) and Costa-H?bes (2009), aim the development of skills in students, writers and readers based on the perspectives of literacy. In this sense, we support the theoretical constructs of Street (1995), Soares (1998; 2002), Rojo (2009), Cosson (2016), Lajolo (2001), Petit (2009), the PCN of Portuguese Language, third and fourth cycles (1998), S? This is a qualitative and ethnographic based character, which brings answer the following question: in what way is the development of a didactic sequence, with a focus on textual/discursive genre literary Chronicle, may contribute to the skills development readers and writers, in Portuguese Language, based on the perspectives of the literacy? So, in addition to the genre, literary literacy Chronicle, we insert in the search using multimodal languages, as the photography, with the appropriation, in the framework of school practices commonly used by students in the times today. The survey results show that it is possible to enlarge the communicative competence of students, as well as critical reflection about the world and themselves, through the literacy, especially the literary, highlighting the chronic and your feature humanizing

Abstract:
This dissertation examines young people’s reading of fiction in the digital age, with a special focus on the aspects of attitude and competence. The literary reading of respondents in their upper teens is considered from several perspectives—especially those of the respondents themselves. The discussion is based on three larger empirical studies of the reading attitudes and practices of 18-year-olds. These studies build on and complement each other in relation to the overarching research questions through a triangulating process combining qualitative and quantitative methods. The studies are, however, freestanding and were conducted using different empirical methods. The first study is diachronic in that it compares national test essays on the topic of reading from the year 2000 with essays written according to the same instructions twelve years later. The main aim of this study is to reveal possible differences between the two generations in terms of attitudes and approaches to reading fiction, and to relate them to issues of literary legitimization and competence. The second study consists of a questionnaire about a short story read by the respondents, as well as about their general reading and media habits. A connection is drawn between media habits and reading frequency, on the one hand, and the results of the essay study, on the other. The respondents’ reception and understanding of the story is analyzed separately. A summary of the first two studies reveals several complex issues with contradictory patterns. The third study, which examines these issues more closely, was conducted through focus-group interviews. All three studies have been carried out among groups of pupils in the third year of upper secondary school in Sweden. The final part of the dissertation summarizes the results of the three studies, applying a pedagogical perspective to literature pedagogy within the subject of Swedish at the upper secondary level. This discussion points out several opportunities for literature teachers today.

Abstract:
Countries around the world, both developed and emerging, agree that financial literacy education (FLE) is of critical importance, with current economic times having led to an opportune moment for financial education. The 2008 global financial crisis (GFC), increasingly complex financial markets, and widespread growth of alternative or predatory financial services are all valid reasons for FLE. At present FLE is considered an essential 21st century life skill for individuals to acquire. Opportunities to teach individuals how to make simple financial decisions about money management and exposure to financial dilemmas an individual might face are some of the approaches used. Ensuring that individuals manage their personal finances effectively so that they have adequate funds to enable a comfortable retirement tends to be the dominating push of FLE. Indeed, this conventional FLE approach is often packaged as easy to acquire skills and knowledge that individuals are expected to follow to effectively manage their finances. The conventional approach also operates from a deficit perspective where assumptions are made about what an individual can or cannot do based on their financial circumstances. Moreover, the social structures that exist to ensure that both poverty and extreme wealth co-exist are not exposed. Therefore, caution should be taken when viewing education as the sole solution to the world’s economic problems as there are other factors to consider such as socio-economic status (SES), gender, culture and behaviour.

Abstract:
Abstract Globalization, immigration and the multiculturalization of society have had a deep impact on Finland in the last few decades. But what effect did these altered cultural-societal circumstances have on literary life in Finland in the early 2000s? The object of research in this article-based dissertation is the transnationalization of literary life in Finland. This is investigated through what is called ’new transnational literature’ in this study by means of analyzing literature published by writers with migrant backgrounds during the first decade of the 20th century in Finland. The study analyzes the reception of debut novels by Ranya ElRamly, Umayya Abu-Hanna, Zinaida Linden and Alexandra Salmela. Furthermore, it considers how this reception has implicitly defined and canonized Finnish literature, and how transnational and cross-border writers are situated in the literary field in Finland. By problematizing how to approach the transnational in literary studies, this dissertation contributes to current debates on methodological nationalism. The research material consists of works of fiction as well as texts published on internet and print media that deal with the reception of the novels. These sources are examined within the framework of cultural studies, mainly from the perspectives of close reading and sociological criticism, media studies-oriented reception theory, and the history of literature, as well as transnational approach that goes beyond national framework. This research demonstrates that approximately 90 writers with migrant backgrounds, often writing in languages other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami, have published texts in Finland in the 2000s. Although many of them have been successful, most of them have continued working without due recognition hampered by prevailing monolingualism. New transnational literary works have been placed in rigid categories, and the reception has emphasized authors’ backgrounds and national borders, thus concealing the literary dimensions and qualities of their works. New transnational literature questions the understanding of literature as nation-bound. According to this study, Finnish literary life appears to be a transnational and multi-lingual space, in which writers simultaneously belong to both transnational and national literary cultures. The significance of gender is also evident, in that women writers and their books have had a pivotal role in the transnationalization of Finnish literature
Vaikka moni on menestynyt hyvin, edelleen suurin osa työskentelee näkymättömissä erityisesti kieleen liittyvien esteiden keskellä. Vastaanotossa aineiston kirjallisuutta on aseteltu jähmeisiin kategorioihin ja kirjailijoiden maahanmuuttajuutta on tuotu esille, mikä on korostanut kansallisia rajoja ja häivyttänyt teosten kaunokirjallisia ulottuvuuksia. Uusi ylirajainen kirjallisuus on horjuttanut käsitystä kansallisesta kirjallisuudesta.

Abstract:
This study explored the nature of and extent to which Canadian children's authors were inviting school-age students into literacy. The most common forms of interaction between authors and readers were identified. While essentially exploratory in nature this investigation provided some descriptive research to help uncover the parameters of the phenomenon of authors interacting with readers at literacy events. A pilot study was conducted in 2004 to help inform the national survey given in 2007. Seventy-three Canadian children's authors participated in the national survey. The email survey consisted of 15 items and asked a variety of questions ranging from how authors shared their craft with students to how beneficial authors found websites as a means of communicating with their readership. From the 125 pages of transcription of responses the following general themes arose: authors in school environments, correspondence, websites, author roles, authors as literacy resources, engaging in the literacy process, and facilitating events and people. Two main research tools were used in this study. Atlas.ti was used to generate key categories from the authors' comments. SPSS was used to generate frequencies. Findings from this study suggested that authors were highly engaged in inviting students further into literacy by meeting and corresponding with readers. Authors identified elements of fiction, researching, reading, developing style, and generating ideas as central components of their dialogues and mentoring of school-aged children. Authors also said that websites were significant for maintaining contact with their readership. Based on the findings of this research, a theoretical model was developed. The Reader/Author Reciprocal Mediation Model considers how students' literacy can improve when authors and readers of texts interact with a storyworld. This study provides a framework for understanding how authors are impacting student literacy.

This dissertation, linked to the Language, Knowledge Teacher Training research line from the Educational Post-Graduate Program of Juiz de Fora Federal University / UFJF – Juiz de Fora/Minas Gerais, presents the course that has been undertaken in the development of an action research. The historical and cultural research aims to create times and spaces for literary reading in a kindergarten class of a public school in the Juiz de Fora city / MG, as well as to understand the senses produced by the children for these practices. For that, I share the school context and the routine of the class, intervening in this routine and leading literary readings for / with the children. The record of the routine happened through photos of the different activities and spaces in which the literary reading has happened and of field notes produced from the observations of reading workshops developed with the kindergarten children. Based on this work, we reflected on the need to perform literary reading mediations as a condition to train readers capable of assigning meaning to the different literary genres, which demand specific ways of reading them. In this respect, literature becomes one of the structuring axes of educational practice and Infant Education presents itself as a space for the formation of literary readers. The historical-cultural theory is the theoretical basis that subsidized the literary reading mediations development and that guided the reflection and analyzes on the accomplished work. In this perspective, reading is conceived as a cultural practice and, therefore, as part of the subjects humanization process. Literature enables the child, by imbricating reality and imagination, to transform into part of his subjectivity what was objectified by other subjects throughout the history of humanity, thus revealing its humanizing force. Based on the research findings, we can perceive that time and space are cultural mediators, when organized to provide access to different elements of culture, in this research to the literary reading moments, contribute to the formation of the subjects and to the attribution of meaning to literary reading practices. Consequently, I develop reflections that allow us to glimpse possibilities of working with literature in the kindergarten classes.

This study deals with the training and shaping of the school student-reader from the sixth year primary education level, essentially those from public schooling, where the student interacts with literary texts. The intention hereby being to show that teaching through literature is possible within the school environment, as well as establish teaching methods for school learning. The method centers on research-action, associated with modular structure workshops as well as with the semi-structured reading circle, which has the objective to teach and learn the reading strategies. The selection of books from literary genres, such as myths, fables and fairy tales shows the construction of prior knowledge within this student-reader, where a strategic communication connection is established with a contemporary work. The research was developed in a public school from the municipality of Senador Canedo, Goiás, with students that had little knowledge of the literary genres described above. Through the perspective of literary literacy, for which the social practice of the reading process is mainly the school, special care was taken in the construction of the workshops, activities and reading circles, where the aim was to make reading the focal point. The commitment from participants was seen throughout the project, with the objectives, in their major part being reached. I believe that the project surpassed the point of identification and interpretation of texts and showed to the students the importance to be placed on the literary work, through their perception of the codes and cultural values, from their social group as well as others noted from these readings. This suggests that there was an enlargement of their interior world. Through this proposal, the students and the teachers were capable of identifying, adapting and constructing new concepts and new ways of interacting not only with the works dealt with, but also with themselves.

Abstract:
Graphic design education has a long history of practitioners leading the development of teaching environments. While these practitioners may develop innovative teaching methods during their educational career, many will never engage with the discipline and literature of pedagogy. Ramsden (2003) asserts that pedagogical principles can help create deeper teaching/learning environments, but this research is all too often disseminated in a lexicon that is not familiar to new graphic design teachers. The research just does not get the message across to those who could benefit most from it. Although graphic design has had difficulties in translating the pedagogical lexicon to its context, it could use its expertise in the visual language to help create a broader understanding of teaching and learning theories and principles for itself and others. The very visual communication skills that we teach could be a more effective way to communicate to educators the necessary pedagogical theory that is to be used in the classroom. This exegesis documents my exploration of pedagogical awareness in graphic design education and how graphic literacy can facilitate this awareness. Through a reflective practice of reading, designing, teaching and conversation, I have uncovered my perceptions and conceptions as a teacher and discovered how some pedagogical principles can help the teaching and learning environment. I have used this knowledge to create an awareness of these principles through the comic language.

Abstract The original form of Dongpozhilin was thirteen historical essays that represent the free thought of Su Shi, expanding the orthodoxy interpretations of Confucianism, using history to discuss changes in the past and present forming consistent discourse of a school of thought. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the content transformed into miscellaneous records, further deeply influencing late Ming short essays. In Su Shi’s strange novels there were also signs of cultural elements from Daoism. The literary theories of Su Shi are put into practice in the five volumes of Dongpozhilin, which is the focus of this study. This literary study explores the uniqueness of the literary talent of Su Shi by investigating the literary charm of “Those who agitate the world render their influence through writing.” This study is divided into three parts according to the writing style of Dongpozhilin: 1. Later overseas historical discourse, seen as a work that seeks to reform and save the world through the formation of discourse in a school. It began with the words from the School of Diplomacy, with a layered method to utilize historical materials, using historical trajectory to point out extraordinary historical views. He used warning statements to summarize essay topics and to enhance the essays. He hypothesized historical fact, gave new descriptions to historical figures, and used an excellent discourse ability to elicit reader interest in appreciation. 2. With the shortness of jottings, simple narration, and realistic writing style, he expressed a heart of ease and interest. The aesthetic senses exceed true scenery, expressing the author’s imagination as well as a pursuit of aesthetics. The writing topics are concerned with the people, which show his heart of a child coexisting with the commoners. His long period of writing followed the ShishuoXinyu method of writing about life and death separation by using happy scenes to accentuate sorrow, compressing different times and spaces into one. He used a reserved fable style, combining jottings with real life and fable connotation. He used humorous language to make fun of himself and others, eliciting banter, fun, continuing the tradition of response to unfairness, directly pointing to unreasonable phenomena in society. 3. Explore the potent Daoist characteristics in Su Shi’s strange novels. It also explored the world of immortals in Daoist health cultivation and romantic colors, imagination of hell, repayment by divine objects, and construction of a Daoist cultural view. Ultimately, this study discusses the effect of Dongpozhilin historical views and jottings on the argumentative essays in the Song and Ming Dynasties, as well as the short essays during the late Ming Dynasty. Keywords: Su Shi, Dongpozhilin, overseas historical discourse, jottings, miscellaneous records, strange novels

Research upon Literary Arts of New Editions for Peking Opera (1949-2005) Abstract Peking Opera is one of the most representative forms of Chinese traditional performing arts, looking back at more than 200 years of history, but still being much alive on modern stages. Due to special reasons, it was not only the government of the Republic of China in its early years on Taiwan, that granted many resources and much attention to Peking opera, but private persons and connoisseurs spent many efforts in the task of ‘enhancing’, ‘new editing’, and ‘modernizing’ this art, thus attempting at adding new aspects to Peking opera and reversing dwindling audience numbers; private circles especially tried to win over and attract the younger generation. It was therefore more than just the trend of the times that resulted in differences between Taiwan’s Peking opera and its original setting in Beijing (in the PR China), as it was the result of a deliberate attempt at reform. This thesis analyzes pieces of Peking opera, that had been newly edited and newly written in Taiwan during the time between 1949 and 2005. It explores reasons for creating these pieces by comparing scripts and literary conditions for their emergence with politico-economic, social and cultural factors of their time of emergence. ABTRACT The topic of the thesis is the research into doctrine and literary character in the KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra. The idea of this research approach is to use doctrine and literary as two directions, to deeply study the KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra. Based on the research, the conclusion of the studies is stated as follows: From the side of doctrine : The dharmacakra-pravartana of the KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra is not limited to darma-giving; besides, its important goal is to lineage. The dhAraNI is not only the skill of memory, but also the summary of Buddhism ; and vital method for Buddha to rotate the dharmacakra .The meaning of ” dharmacakra-pravartana” and”dhAraNI”in the KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra, the meanings are broaden and deepened. The KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra elaborates on both pure buddhalands and impure buddhalands. According to the contents of scripture, it explores the environment , the living beings and teaching methods on pure buddhalands and impure buddhalands. With regard to characteristics of living beings, they in the KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra are bodhisattvas, the major teaching method is naturally mahayana, because the living beings on impure buddhalands have various besetments, three fold vehicles is applied to teach those beings in accordance with their characteristic。 From the side of literary character:First of all, treat the elementary construction of the KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra. Wakyamuni Buddha once stayed on Mt.GrdhrakUTa in RAjagRha, many bodhisattvas look towards the southern-east direction and clasp their hands together, which leads Ratnavairocana Bodhisattva to raise questions, so another space is introduced– the PadmA Buddhaland;stimulated by the display of scenes of each pure buddhalands, Wantimati Bodhisattva asks Wakyamuni Buddha”What is the reason that you have not taken apure buddhaland? ”, so Buddha’s JAtaka in this space is illustrated, starting from SamudrareNu.Subsequently, probe into the characters of people in KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtras. With SamudrareNu as center, spread out the network of people relationship, including both ethical relation and religious relation. How to categorize the types of people is based on their position and influence level in the KaruNApuNDarIka-sUtra, separate people into major personage and secondary personage.Lastly, through 8 JAtakas of MahAsattvas Budhisattvas, propagate the great compassion on why Wakyamuni Buddha becomes Buddha in this impure buddhalands, and confer the meaning of culture behind the stories.

The spirit of the chivalrous figures in the Chuanqi of the Tang Dynasty is deemed to be a standard of the ethic morals to praise the justice by the literati. The literati hope they can rebuild the social norms by practicing these courageous acts in the chaotic period of time. The character Féng Yān in the Féng Yān Biography killed the unrighteous paramour and confessed his offense, which represents the standard of the Confucian ethic morals. In spite of the killing of the woman’s life, Féng Yān Biography is still highly praised and appreciated. Therefore, Féng Yān Biography has become a vital literary motif and has been rewritten time after time. Also, from the plot of story, we can find that the author tried to restore the society to full strength in accordance with three dimensions-- “affection”, “justice”, and “law”. Yet, there are still plenty of paradoxes and disorder in the story, and that’s the reason why Féng Yān Biography has been a topic of heated debate for scholars. The author chose the Féng Yān Biography as the topic, discussing the three dimensions -- “affection”, “justice”, and “law” from the background of the work and the attitude of the writer. Also, the author tried to check whether Féng Yān fit the image of the spirit of the chivalrous figures. Besides, the formation of the literary motif and the attitude of the literati in different dynasties were dissected to further examine the value passed down through distinct dynasties. Lastly, the issue of genders was also discussed and was used as the core value in the research. In this thesis, chapter one first introduced the motivation, the aim, and the research method and proposed the frame of the pre-research and thesis. Chapter two first deals with the backgrounds of the story and further examines whether Féng Yān fits into the spirit of the chivalrous figures. As for chapter three, the author elaborates on the characters in the three dimensions-- “affection”, “justice”, and “law”, and connects them with the social order and the paradoxes that are against the ethic morals. In chapter four, an analysis is conducted to compare the different versions of the story with an eye to summarizing these writers’ consciousness and self-awareness. The values adopted to interpret the story in different dynasties and the feminine perspectives are listed in the chapter five; by analyzing women in the Tang Dynasty influenced by the marriage, education, and the structure of gender authority, the author tries to discuss the how women confront their sexuality and further examines the reflection of genders based on the literary motif. In chapter six comes the conclusion, which integrates the analyses of “affection”, “justice”, and “law” in the story. Besides, the author takes the values involved in the Féng Yān Biography into account, trying to point out its significance in the literature.

The description of literary dynamics should be based on a clockwise historic frame. That's why collectivity research is approved much more important. However, it might exist some problems. Therefore, I chose literary collectivity research as a driving point to present the essentiality of this topic. This thesis is divided into 6 chapters. Chapter 1---The motivation I wrote this thesis is simply because the epicrises of literary collectivity research seldom chose the existing literary groups as the discussible objects. As a result, I chose six copies of literary history as the range of this research. Chapter 2---It's a must to discuss and retrace the frame of literary collectivity description. I define the certain and uncertain literature collection according to the essentiality and completion of literary groups from the previous definition and conclusion in the literary history. Uncertain literary group is between literary group and anti- literary group. Since its internal attribution is not easy to catch, it's very common to see the indistinctness and difference when the literary historian made the definition for anti- single literary object. Chapter 3---As per the definition, I divide the literary groups in the six copies literaryhistory into 2 divisions. One is certain literary groups, the other is uncertain literary groups. The historians' cognizance relating to the groups should be quite different since their points of view regarding history are somehow different. Also, the information and bibliography they were choosing would also deeply influence their cognizance. Chapter 4---The development of Sung's poetry is the beginning of schism concept to be settled down. And " The empiric schism" is belonged to uncertain literary groups in the six copies literary history. Thus, I cited it as the example in order to examine the differences of the description compared to that in the literary history. Chapter 5----Via the contrast between ideal and actuality , I would like to include the meaning of uncertain literary group into the literary history research as " The empiric schism" is not a single special example. Through this way, I found there're two problems of the literary groups in researching literary history. One is the incompatibility from description and evaluation , the other is individuality among the commonality which can't be resolved. When it comes to uncertain literary group, we should discuss not only the corpus but also the relevant points in order to solve the above problem. Chapter 6---The fruition of this thesis is to reflect the differences between my opinions and the literary history and try to approach the original. Besides, I want to retrace and revise the errors of the diplomatics especially in the aspect of reading and writing.

Afros, Elena. "Promotional (Meta)discourse in Research Articles in Language and Literary Studies." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/3278.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract It is now widely recognized that promotionalism permeates scholarly discourse. Yet a systematic account of rhetorical and linguistic means, which researchers across disciplines deploy to achieve this effect, is still to be developed. The present thesis attempts to contribute to the investigation of strategies and exponents of the promotional (meta)discourse in the humanities. In particular, it compares and contrasts research articles in language and literary studies published in North American academic journals during 2001-2006. This inquiry demonstrates that in both disciplines scholars utilize two rhetorical strategies to publicize their work: first, positive evaluation of one’s own study and of those investigations in which the current study is grounded and second, negative evaluation of dissenting views. A combination of both strategies is used to widen the gap between one’s contribution and (erroneous) alternative treatments. Among lexicogrammatical and discourse devices employed in both disciplines are evaluative lexis reinforced by derivational and inflectional morphology, coordination, comment clauses, personal pronouns, lexical cohesion, and discourse chunks sequencing. Distribution of promotional elements across article sections and moves in the two disciplines, however, differs. On the whole, the thesis reconfirms the advantage of specificity in teaching academic literacies advocated by many applied linguists and provides actual patterns that can be incorporated into writing curriculum.

The poet, Wu Meicun (吳梅村), was born during the time period as the Ming dynasty was to be overthrown by the Qing Dynasty. The time was under a great flux; people were profoundly shaken. As a Ming official, he constantly received great mercy from the Chongzhen Emperor. When the country entered the reign of the Qing dynasty, he fled and stayed in a small village instead of giving his life for the country as the regime change. Under the coercion from the Qing court, he was impressed to serve in the court, which made him an er-chen (貳臣), a former official who subsequently serves the new emperor in the following regime. It affected him to spent the rest of his life in bitter remorse. Meicun''s moral principle would be questioned, but his freewheeling spirit and being in a time of turmoil inspired poetic sentiments out of him and provided bountiful subject matters for his creative works nevertheless. It made his poetry as poetic history. There were quite a great number of characters appeared in Meichun''s poems, from the emperor and the empress to an everyman. Under his writing, each had an unique and lively image. These characters significantly represented the rise and fall of his era and expressed deep grief of the adherents of their fallen country besides reflecting personalties and vicissitudes in life. In this dissertation, the subject therefore is, as mentioned in the title, “A research on the literary images in Wu Meicun''s poems”. The literary characters of the contemporary people are to be probed through the verses in his poems. The possible historical origins behind these characters are to be disclosed. The intension and the technique which manifested each character by Meicun are to be comprehended. At the end of this dissertation, the achievement and the impact of how Meicun created his literary characters in his writing of Meicun style is discussed.

The voiceless age of Taiwan’s “adopted daughters” have gradually vanished with the changing of the times. However, nowadays, there are still quite a few outstanding adopted daughters from all walks of life displaying their extraordinary achievements. This thesis discusses the social roles of adopted daughters, their identity background and their various ways of adaptation to the changing society. The division of the chapters in the thesis is based on the historical sequence of dynasties, which include the Qing Dynasty, the Japanese rule, and the period after Taiwan restoration. The literary works of each era have their own time significance, and the works in each particular era also have their respective features. First, the origin and the cause of Taiwan’s adopted daughters are discussed. Adopted daughters of a homogenous type in the literary works will be classified in the same category, and then the subtle distinctions of adopted daughters of the same type will be further studied. From novels, ballads, proverbs, poetries, and so on, adopted daughters’ life styles, social statuses, sexual differences as well as the etiquette restrictions to females are examined. In addition, from folklores, adopted daughters’ social role, the time significance, and the society’s enlightened function are discussed. Both the interviews of today’s adopted daughters and the reference to correlative data from Taiwan report literature provide the basis for this thesis. By analyzing multiple images of adopted daughters by means of both theory and real examples, we come to know the historical importance of literary works. Then, after introspection, equal rights for two genders could be promoted and the ideal of harmonious society could also be reached.
