AbstractLiterati paintings were drawn by Korean Confucian scholars from the end of the Koryeo period to the end of the Joseon period. As painting these works was considered a method for a scholar’s self-cultivation, literati paintings express plenty of in-depth metaphysical points of significance. Meanwhile, these paintings revealed changes that correspond with changes in cultural circumstances. The present study considers such transformation as a deconstructive process. This research analyzes three Korean orchid paintings to address the following three questions: (1) How are the literati’s th

Abstract In the early twentieth century, Chinese literati painting was embroiled in arguments on the relationship between ancient and modern or east and west. Therefore, the artistic practices of Wu Changshuo, Chen Shizeng, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong and so on, were in response to this development. However, with the occurrence of World War ii and changes in the post-war situation, literati painting underwent further, new changes in different regions. Abstract Literati landscape painting was the mainstream of Chinese art in the Yuan dynasty; its keynote is the idea of yi, literally, escaping for freedom, which is represented by the notion of reclusiveness at the conceptual level and the notion of spontaneity at the formal level. Based on an analytical interpretation of the development of Yuan literati landscape painting at the two levels, this essay intends to make a point that, under the Mongol rule, reclusiveness and spontaneity became the artistic pursuit of Chinese artists in the period from late 13th to late 14th century. We ask Chinese scholars and spatial planners to liberate Deleuzian potential for strategic spatial planning in a ‘becoming-between, coming-together’ of concepts which can effectiv

Few cultures had as rich a vocabulary for pictures of specific places as did eighteenth-century Japan. Why then did yet another word, shinkeizu (literally “true-view pictures”), come into being in the late eighteenth century? The answer is that none of the existing terms satisfactorily articulated the ideological essence of a new kind of painting advocated by a group of artists who sought to incorporate into their work styles and concepts associated with the art of the Chinese literatus. The Taiwanese Modem Ink-wash Painting that emerged in the 1950s is an extension of this painterly tradition. This new visual form of modern Ink-wash painting that I am presenting, is a hybrid, combining both Chinese Ink-wash painting and American Abstract Expressionism, and represents a different and I hope more progressive artistic style in comparison to the restricted conventions of Literati painting. In addition to this painting, three other versions bearing similar poetic inscriptions exist.
