Full textBy taking control of Mozambique after a decade of armed struggle against Portugal in 1974, FRELIMO saw the experience during combat (especially the organization and administration of the so called liberated zones) as a guide to the government. The issues concerning the ideal of nation-building after independence were dealt based on a perspective of not only political, but also social and cultural modernization. However, that nations vision was not unchallenged outside or even within the FRELIMO structure. Fractures, disputes and discords in the configuration and construction of identity(ies) in Mozambique after independence emerged to public space in 1980, and are the main point of the dissertation. From the analysis of Mozambican cultural journals, I question whether the homogenizing project of FRELIMO Party was in fact hegemonic, not only amongst the rural populations, but even within its urban support base. Studied as sources and as research objects, the cultural journals, particularly the Gazeta de Artes e Letras (Arts and Letters Gazette), part of the weekly magazine Tempo, and the session Diálogo (Dialog), firstly a part of the newspaper Notícias da Beira, represent an important initiative of Mozambican intellectuals trying to promote discussions on various aspects of nation-building that followed the revolution. These periodicals served then as spaces for debate in a time of rallies, allowing the voicing of grievances over the direction of both the models of country and citizen proposed (or imposed) by FRELIMO.

Full textMia Coutos romanesque work is the inquiry object of this thesis, trying to comprehend the authors contribution in the assertion of the African novel and in the reconstruction of the identity of his country, Mozambique. In order to do this, the study discusses the importance of revealing an occult landscape to the reader, its cultural origin and complex understanding. The chapter that brings this analysis shows how the work reflects the historical and political conditions of domination, social differences, identifying occasionally a slightly engaged accent in Mia Coutos writing, as much as his ideological position and denouncement. Among the detached subjects in the work is African animism, which originates several supernatural circumstances in the plot, as a constant remembrance: in Africa, spirits are everywhere, keeping intense relationship with the people. Around this issue, the thesis discusses the fact that part of the critics classify the work in genres such as the Magical Realism, the Marvellous and the Fantastic. Also the narrative strategies of this author are investigated, as his regular options in the creation of the plots, characters, names of characters and epigraphs. Based on these marks and in other common traces to all his novels perhaps equally present in his short stories we find adequacy between the dichotomic thought system, through the work, and the phrasings that reveal something significant: Mia Coutos novels are propositive, especially when they invite the reader to the constant movement of questioning their proper certainties

Full textThe present work proposes an analysis of five novels by the Mozambican author Mia Couto published between 2000 to 2009. The corpus embraces the following novels: Mar me quer (2000), O último voo do flamingo (2000), A varanda do Frangipani (1996), O outro pé da Sereia (2006) and Antes de nascer o mundo (2009). The proposal is to examine the representation of writing – the word on paper – consisting of the epistolary genre – letters, as well as diaries, notes, and notebooks, information contained in the novels that composed by the corpus of work. The representation of writing through these forms is indeed recurrent in most of Couto´s novels and also element participant in numerous tales, either as a motive, either as theme, either as constitutive element. It is noted the uniqueness of the author who, even when he emphasizes writing, undergoes a process of imbrication with orality. We tried to pay attention to issues involving the characters who use writing. It is necessary to highlight the importance of the author and his work within the Mozambican Literature, as well as his activism in the creation and dissemination of the culture of his country, breaking archetypes created about the African continent. Dialogue is undertaken with literary critics and Luso-African Literature scholars, among which we name: Ana Mafalda Leite, Patrick Chabal, Maria Fernanda Afonso, Manuel Ferreira and José Pires Laranjeira. For the analysis of missives, are employed theories by Carlos Reis, Michel Foucault and Mikhail Bakhtin. About the Mozambican reality, we counted with authors such as Valdemir Zamparoni, José Luis Cabaço and João Carlos Colaço.

Full textThe goal of this dissertation is to discuss how the Mozambican writer Mia Couto problematizes the identity of the African people, since the representation of the characters points out, often to reflections that revolve around the issues of globalization and postmodernity. I chose the book O outro pé da sereia as the main corpus of this research because it’s a book that seeks to deconstruct those archetypes about Africa and its peoples represented in the imagination of Western society - an image that was built from a Eurocentric view. In this perspective, I have identified that the work of Mia Couto presents a nihilistic view about the identity constructs and thus problematizes as well as demystifies Africa as a place of return of the Diaspora in search of their roots. From this crop I sought to question from a Nietzschean perspective, how social factors affect the formation of subjectivity of each individual, seeking no longer a fixed truth about the identity of Africans, but to whom and for what are we seeking that Truth, noting the challenges and tensions of modern society represented in its works before the challenges of contemporary times. This dissertation sought to discuss and present the constructs identity from factors judged important as post-modernity, nation, race and cosmopolitanism.

Full textThis work examines the novel O último voo do flamingo, written by the Mozambican author Mia Couto, published for the first time in 2000, in Portugal. Initially presenting as a police plot, the novel is narrated by a character who witnessed the facts: the Tizangara‘s translator, responsible for translating the dialogue between Eurocentric culture and Mozambican‘s mythical beliefs. The cultural mediation, the story‘s narrative and the moments in which the narrator/translator tells his life presuppose a shift of points of view which are studied under considerations of the researchers Oscar Tacca and Gérard Genette. Ambivalence, which is both cause as well as consequence of this narrative construction, reflects the contrariety lived by the small Mozambican village of Tizangara, scenario of the novel. From the conception of myth established by Mircea Eliade, it is seen that the sacred worldview characteristic of part of Mozambican‘s historical traditions, is represented in O último voo do flamingo by ancestors, wizards and eldest men, the bearers of wisdom in African beliefs. Given that, corruption, as a sign of power of Tizangara‘s local governors, threatens continuity of life, leading the narrative to the apocalyptical scenario suggested by Mia Couto as a way of restart. To understand this contrast, it is considered not only the historical background of Mozambique as well as Tizangara, a metonym of the African country. Reflecting the complex historical moment in which that country is going through, the year of 1992 is chosen to tell the story – first year of peace after decades of war (emancipation and civil). Even though freed from Portuguese colonization since 1975, Mozambique remains colonized, in a different way now. We identify as well some of the conditions that contributed to neocolonialism with bibliographic support of Stuart Hall and Kwame Anthony Appiah. The historical presentation of Mozambique is based on guidelines established by the African historian Joseph Ki-Zerbo.

The present work discusses the literary representation of death, according to two works by the Mozambican author Saleiman Cassamo - O Regresso do Morto and Palestra para um Morto. Because death is a recurring subject on his tales and his novel, we decided to study the specificity of this matter, taking into account the socio-cultural context in which it happens. But before, we begin by carrying out a theoretical reflection on the subject, revisiting culture and literature throughout time. Subsequently, we present an overview of death in some Mozambican works and, finally, in Saleiman Cassamo’s narrative. The most striking aspect of the works in question is how the characters live with death. Death is not something disturbing to the living because they live well together with it, choosing, sometimes, to give themselves to death in order to find the peace that they did not have in life. Suleiman Cassamo provides the reader with his own vision of death and perspective on life, leading the reader to a self-reflection on the many expressions of his own existence.

__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
In this study, we analyze the reconfiguration of the Mozambicans identities in the Mia Couto and Paulina Chiziane’s novels, in the context of the transformations that had place in Mozambique in the last decades. We try to understand how these workmanships, produced between 1990 and 2006, represent the society and are responsible for the construction of meanings, and establish determined image for the collective cultural identity. From intersections among the studies of Homi Bhabha, Stuart Hall and Katthryn Woodward, the processes of construction of the cultural identities, analyzed as force relations are considered, where the signs differentiators of Self can be submerged in the speech of the nation, but always possible to emerge at any time, indicating that the homogeneous speech is truncated by heterogeneous histories of groups in dispute. The resource of the novel as source for a historical study begins in the understanding that the literature, more than fiction, it’s also a representation of the lived time and, like the historiography’s studies, promotes an order and a configuration of the secular experience of the men.The theoretical foundation of these considerations, searched in Ricoeur, establishes similarities among the procedures of the novelist and the historian, as representation of the action, and as the intrigue’s composition. These are the mechanisms through which both search to reach, with its narratives, the understanding and the likelihood. Paul Veyne reaffirms that the historical knowledge has in the understanding its main axle and that, therefore, the operation of the historian implies construction of texture and establishment of the route, what it makes of the history “only one true narrative” About the treatment of the texts, we adopted the procedure suggested by Richard Johnson, exploring the thematic problems and, the subjective or cultural configurations that such texts are explicating. From the analysis of these thematic ones and the relations with other academic texts, journalistic and government’s speeches, promoting an interpretation of the configurations constructed for the two studied authors. The reflection on the dialogue established in the novels with contemporaries events, particularly the crisis of the socialism, the civil war and the recovery of the tradition while configuration of society’s expression, leads to the directions that each author attributes to its intrigue.

This paper discusses Balada de amoraovento, a novel by Paulina Chiziane, aiming to understand the oralities inserted in fictional narrative. It contributes to the study of structures and expressive codes of oral languages in the novel. It establishes a dialogue between the Mozambican collective imaginary and the composition forms of the written narrative, which are intertwined in the historical context. The exegesis of Balada de amoraovento was made according to the proposal of the mythical chronotope by Bakhtin, because Chiziane develops the mythical storyline in which she recovers in the written language legends, proverbs and traditional rituals by the songs that appear throughout the tale. The study of the performatic narrative includes performance and rituals present in oralities. It analyzes the novel in the context of Mozambican customs in an attempt to rescue the cultural identity lost because of the pluralism in Mozambique as she aims at building its own literature.
