Abstract:
The article concerns the theme of extermination of the mentally ill and handicapped in Polish literature. It outlines the basic facts regarding this crime perpetrated by the Nazis and indicates how Polish literature reacted to it. There are few works which deal with this crime. Writers (and historians) probably considered the extermination of the mentally ill to be a fact of insignificance compared to other Nazi crimes, or knew little about it. Thus Polish literature treats it incidentally, by entering it in another, more extensive or “more important” issue (the extermination of the Jews, the extermination of the Polish population), or treats it as an occasion to take up “more fundamental” (ideological) problems. The article analyzes famous works, Stanisław Lem’s novel Hospital of the Transfiguration and Andrzej Bursa’s poem The liquidation of the mentally ill in Kobierzyn by the Germans, and less known texts: Piotr Matywiecki’s poem *** [Dragged into the sun….] and Anna Dziewit-Meller’s novel Mount Taygetus.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article presents findings contained in the work by Arkadiusz Morawiec entitled Literatura polska wobec ludobójstwa. Rekonesans [Polish literature faced with genocide. Reconnaissance]. The scholar from Łódź calls into question the hitherto established hierarchy of genocides. Extensive comparative research into literary representations of particular wartime massacres is what constitutes the thematic pivot of the said treatise, which joins in the discussion scope outlined by genocide studies. Subsequent chapters of the presented book are devoted to literary reverberations of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by Turks, the Nazi-Germany extermination of persons with physical and mental retardation as well as Sinti and Roma, the Srebrenica massacres carried out by Serbs. The remaining chapters deal with the Holocaust literature and, according to the author’s intentions, an attempt to enrich the state of research, and sometimes – to amend some of their findings.

Abstract:
The first half of the 20th century has witnessed tragic episodes in Europe where the topic understood as humanity has being closed down. This article addresses the way literature, or the best of it —written by the survivors at the Nazi death camps, French camps, those who, broken and in front of everyone’s eyes, experienced the progress of evil, like Victor Klemperer— in the light of the difficulty to depict the horror and the decline of the human being, takes charge of genres close to the real —the report or the chronicle, the diary, the essay— and it opposes to horror the necessity of stating an unrealistic human experience in order to, ultimately, prevent it from happening again. As examples we can mention: Primo Levy in Auschwitz Trilogy; Max Aub in French Camp; Victor Klemperer in Diaries; Jean Améry in Beyond Guilt and Atonement.

Abstract:

Inksetter, Hamish. "Perceptions of Evil: A Comparison of Moral Perspectives in Nazi Propaganda and Anti-Nazi Literature." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31917.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how the concept of evil was understood by opposing German perspectives during the era of National Socialist rule (1933-1945). The rise of Nazism in Germany marked a period of massive political upheaval wherein the National Socialist government encouraged the masses to view the world in terms of a great struggle between forces of good and evil. This was the central theme of their propaganda, which zealously encouraged racialist beliefs in the popular consciousness, and was based on assumptions of German superiority and Jewish evil. Despite Hitler's apparent success in creating an obedient nation, a significant number of Germans opposed his rule, amongst whom a small group of writers expressed their discontent through creative fiction. Through a comparison of the worldviews communicated through political propaganda and anti-Nazi literature, it is revealed that the crux of the divide between their opposing perspectives hinged on the meaning of evil. Since evil is a concept with many meanings, this thesis approaches the subject thematically. The comparison begins by focusing on the perception of evil as an all-corrupting force that had taken hold of Germany, followed by an exploration of how power and brutality were understood, ending with a comparison of views on how the struggle between good and evil took place on both a social and individual level. In addition to demonstrating the subjectivity of moral perspective during a tumultuous period of the recent past, this research reveals how the struggle against Nazism existed as a conflict of ideas. Moreover, the comparison of cultural sources (including Nazi art, visual propaganda, written texts such as Mein Kampf, and anti-Nazi creative fiction) demonstrates the value of art as a tool for conducting historical enquiry. Since the legacy of the Third Reich continues to directly influence modern perceptions of evil, exploring how evil was understood according to contemporary Germans – from both pro and anti-Nazi perspectives – is of particular historical interest.

Landry, Olivia Ryan. "The female corpse: sacrificed bodies of Enlightenment tragedy and Nazi cinema." Thesis, McGill University, 2008. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=22047.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis approaches the topic of feminine representation through comparative readings of two eighteenth-century Enlightenment tragedies, G. E. Lessing's Emilia Galotti (1772) and Charlotte von Stein's Dido (1794), as well as two twentieth-century Nazi films, Leni Riefenstahl's The Blue Light (1932) and Veit Harlan's Jew Süss (1940). In addition to the obvious diachronic dimension of this project, my framework for examination is thematically structured. Drawing on numerous theories and secondary sources, I will investigate these texts under three specific topics – namely, female sexuality, female sacrifice, and finally, the female corpse. All three chronologically represent the junctures of the rhetorical instrumentalization and abuse of the female body in these texts. In light of this, the thesis seeks to thus reveal not only the unexpected diachronic parallels between the texts and therefore between the Enlightenment and the Nazi period, but more importantly, it seeks to reinterrogate hitherto accepted readings of these texts vis-à-vis feminine representation.<br>Ce mémoire aborde le sujet de la représentation de la femme à travers des lectures comparatives de deux tragédies de l'époque de les Lumières, Emilia Galotti (1772) de G. E. Lessing et Dido (1794) de Charlotte von Stein, ainsi que de deux films nazis, La lumière bleue (1932) de Leni Riefenstahl, et Juif Süss (1940) de Veit Harlan.

Pettitt, Joanne. ""What kind of animal is the Nazi beast?" : representations of perpetrators in narratives of the Holocaust." Thesis, University of Kent, 2016. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/54326/.

Full text
Abstract:
This project seeks to explore representations of Holocaust perpetrators in literature. Such texts, often rather controversially, seek to undo the myth of “pure evil” that surrounds the Holocaust and to reconstruct the perpetrator in more “human” terms. Accordingly, significant questions of “how” and “why” are centralised and explored, providing fertile ground for examinations of the intersections between ethics, literature and history, and enabling ongoing discussions about the characteristics and obligations of perpetrator literature as a whole. Of central concern, these humanising discourses place emphasis on the contextual or situational factors that led up to the genocide. Following these issues through to their logical conclusion, this project takes the question of determinism seriously. This is not to suggest that it disavows individual responsibility, merely that it engages fully with the philosophical problems that are invoked through allusions to external influences, especially as they relate to ideas of contingency. A significant consequence of these discussions is the impact that they have on the reader. That is because, since situational aspects are featured so heavily in these narratives, questions are raised about his or her own capacity for wrongdoing. Consequently, the reader is drawn into the narrative as a potential perpetrator. The tensions that this creates constitutes the second major focus of this work. Ultimately, I hope to expose the challenges that face the reader when they encounter perpetrator narratives, and the ways in which these tensions impact upon our understandings of these figures, and of the Holocaust more generally. In order to provide a more comprehensive overview this project makes use of a large number (in excess of sixty) primary sources, examining both fictional and non-fictional accounts. My aim is not to offer close literary analyses of each of the texts under consideration but, rather, to trace paradigms across the full spectrum of perpetrator literature. In this way, I hope to contribute to the growing body of literature that engages with this topic.

Abstract:
Abstract An extensive analysis of the contact phenomenon occuring between a roller chain and sprocket was given by Binder in 1956. Naji and Marshek complemented Binder’s work by presenting a theoretical and experimental investigation of the contact phenomenon under quasi-static conditions during the early 1980’s. The problem is very complex, and significantly complicated due to the non-trivial geometry of the sprocket tooth, manufacturing tolerances, and changes in clearances between components due to wear. Accordingly, several simplifying assumptions were necessary in the previous investigations. In this paper, a more detailed model of the quasi-static contact phenomenon is developed from first principles. The new model includes the external loading conditions, the curvature difference between the roller and the seating curve, the net error in the chain pitch (defined as the error in the chain pitch minus the error in the sprocket pitch), and Coulomb friction between the tooth and roller, the roller and bushing, and the bushing and pin. No assumption regarding the pressure angle at each contact point is made — rather the pressure angle at each contact point is calculated during the solution. (This is a very significant difference between the present and previous analyses). An efficient strategy for the computation is outlined. In a companion paper (“Mechanics of Roller Chain - Sprocket Contact: Observations About the Contact Phenomenon and Load Distribution” submitted for presentation at this conference), results generated by the new model are presented and discussed. A comparison with experimental data taken from the literature (Naji and Marshek, 1983) indicates that excellent quantitative prediction of load distribution is possible. Finally, practical observations about chain performance (including effects of manufacturing tolerance and wear, and guidelines for incorporation of idler sprockets) are presented.

Abstract:
V £lanku smo predstavili pristop k analizi sen-timenta komentarjev hotelskih gostov s pomo£jo slovarjev in metode Naivni Bayes.

Abstract:
Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions. Often, studies in the literature have investigated idealized and simplified geometries, which are also typically scaled down to very small sizes. In this study, the two phase flow system inside a transparent acyclic model with actual milling circuit cyclone hydraulics was investigated computationally and experimentally. The diameter and height of the hydrocyclone are 12.7 cm and 94 cm, respectively. In many industrial applications, a single phase flow system in a hydrocyclone is a rarity, since nearly all cyclones have an underflow which is open to atmosphere, and therefore an air core is present along the central axis. In this study, the flow field with an air core present has been investigated. The computational modelling was conducted using Star CCM+, a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software package. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and the Volume of Fluid multiphase model was used. Additionally, the computational studies also focused on the prediction of the dimensions of the air core, which were measured experimentally. The tests were conducted in the Reynolds number range of 20,000–150,000 and 9000–67,800 for the water and NaI solution respectively. The model hydrocyclone was made of optically transparent acrylic plastic with flat, smooth outer surfaces so that there were no reflections, distortions, or obstructions. Refractive index matching, to minimize refraction effects, between the test fluid and acrylic test piece was achieved using a test liquid of sodium iodide aqueous solution (63.3% NaI by weight). Images of the flow field with the air core were taken using a Canon DSLR camera. A comparison between the experimental data and the computational results were made in the r-z plane. The experimental results and the computational results will be discussed in this paper.
