Abstract:
El derecho bancario como fuente del conocimiento jurídico especializado en un ámbito que incluye un estudio multidisciplinario, técnico y complejo, es una rama poco explorada por la literatura en especial por la literatura jurídica panameña. Esta rama del derecho viene a suponer una especialidad jurídica que evidentemente tiene su desarrollo sobre la actividad de una empresa, el banco, pero que, por otro lado, tiene a su sujeto de protección, el cual lo hace conforme a criterio de la autora una rama del derecho eminentemente pública, en la persona entendida como consumidor bancario. Así, ante la captación de fondos del del público y ante la clara importancia que reviste en todo el sistema financiero, el derecho bancario tiende a enmarcar todo este ámbito de estudio y a encontrar las mejores fuentes de regulación del sector que per se es ampliamente regulado, en el caso panameño, a través de la Superintendencia de Bancos de Panamá.

Abstract:
La identidad negra en Panamá es un concepto complejo por la coexistencia de dos grupos de negros: los afrocoloniales y los afroantillanos. Mientras que los afrocoloniales son producto del mestizaje racial y se identifican por su nacionalidad panameña, los afroantillanos son inmigrantes y siguen el modelo racial de sus países natales ”Jamaica y Barbados” que se basa en la negritud. Los escritores afropanameños Juan Urriola, Gaspar Octavio Hernández, Carlos Cubena Guillermo Wilson y Melva Lowe de Goodin representan a estos dos grupos étnicos y en sus obras se manifiesta la problemática de la identidad, reflejo de la diáspora africana.

Abstract:
La trayectoria de Rosa María Britton, transcurre entre la medicina y la literatura. Participó de la modernización del Instituto Oncológico de Panamá y como directora de la Fundación Pro-Biblioteca Nacional, realizó una extraordinaria gestión cultural. Este artículo hace un recorrido por las distintas ejecutorias de su participación en la vida pública del país que la llevó a ser reconocida como una figura distinguida por sus méritos. Se listan algunos de sus escritos, los cuales le generaron un público lector permanente. Sus obras han sido traducidas al inglés, francés, italiano y sueco. Se hizo merecedora en seis ocasiones del premio de literatura más importante del país: el Premio Ricardo Miró. Publicó dieciocho obras y fue invitada como oradora por universidades norteamericanas en reiteradas ocasiones para compartir esa experiencia literaria. Es la escritora panameña que más nos ha representado en ferias a nivel internacional.

Abstract:
Luna verde, narración muy influyente dentro de la literatura panameña contemporánea, ha establecido y desarrollado los tópicos de lo que se conoce como novela canalera. Este subgénero se circunscribe a la denuncia de los hechos ocurridos en la Zona del Canal de Panamá, donde la ocupación norteamericana se constituye en un régimen despótico. El relato se basa en la construcción de un héroe que va de la soledad existencial al reconocimiento de sí mismo y de su pueblo. En función de ello, plantea diferentes dicotomías de índole político, racial, ideológico, de género e histórico, que se analizarán considerando su objetivo realista y testimonial, y su fuerte impronta relacionada con el nacionalismo romántico. El personaje, Ramón de Roquebert, en el contexto del fracaso de la nación liberal, que provocó la concesión a una potencia extranjera de parte del territorio panameño, narra su propio desencanto y su búsqueda de una respuesta individual y colectiva, primero como trabajador y luego como estudiante. En la unión de ambos roles yace la iniciativa que la nacionalidad espera para afirmarse a sí misma.Luna verde is a very influential narration within contemporary Panamanian literature. It has endowed and developed the topics of what is known as the «novela canalera». This subgenre denounces the events that occurred in the Panama Canal Zone, where the North Americans established a despotic regime. The story is based on the formation of a hero who goes from existential loneliness to the identification of his people and himself. Subsequently, the novel exposes various dichotomies of a political, racial, ideological, historical and gender character, which will be analyzed in the light of its realistic and testimonial purpose and its strong imprint related to romantic nationalism. The main character, Ramon de Roquebert, narrates his own disenchantment and his search for an individual and collective response, first as a worker and then as student. In the union of both roles lies the initiative that nationality hopes to assert itself. This should be analyzed from a specific point of view which takes into consideration the context of the failure of the liberal nation, that ultimately leads to the concession of part of the Panamanian territory to a foreign power.

Como exalumna, profesora y directora de la Escuela Nacional de Danzas por muchos años, sentí el compromiso de dar a conocer más acerca del nacimiento y evolución de dicho plantel: cómo inició, cuál ha sido su trascendencia en el tiempo, cuál es su aporte al desarrollo cultural y social de Panamá. Era importante develar algunas interrogantes, pero principalmente, determinar la importancia histórica, política, social, económica que permitió su desarrollo dentro del contexto histórico de las políticas públicas y filosóficas que dieron paso a su creación y continuidad. Me propuse iniciar el registro del aporte de algunos de los muchos artistas que apoyaron con su esfuerzo y dedicación al desarrollo de la cultura y danza panameña, por lo que revisé la literatura existente, analicé información de los diarios, los programas de mano, recortes de revistas, pero fueron las entrevistas, las que ayudaron a descifrar las acciones que surgieron de la interacción de las ideas que prevalecieron durante la década de los 50, 60, y 70. Dichas ideas fueron parte importante del desarrollo histórico y artístico de nuestro plantel y quiero incentivar a las nuevas generaciones a que se interesen en continuar la búsqueda de nuestra historia y danza panameña en todas sus facetas: bailarines, coreógrafos, vestuaristas, diseñadores, técnicos y maestros que han trazado las huellas de este presente que vivimos, gracias al pasado que ellos reformaron. Es responsabilidad del estado y de la sociedad civil, apoyar la educación del arte para lograr un desarrollo más equilibrado de nuestra sociedad.

Abstract:
Debido a la reciente migración de la ¨Langosta Centroamericana¨ Schistocerca piceifrons piceifrons (Walker, 1870) en algunos países de América Central, la población panameña está preocupada, por la posibilidad de que dicha plaga, que oficialmente aún no ha sido reportada para Panamá, se encuentre en el país. Sumado a ello, algunos medios de comunicación han hecho circular imágenes de una especie de saltamontes, vista con frecuencia en ciudades como David, a la cual le atribuyeron equivocadamente ser la “Langosta Centroamericana”. El objetivo del presente estudio fue identificar dicha especie de Orthoptera, encontrada con frecuencia en áreas urbanas de la Ciudad de David, Chiriquí, Panamá; además de actualizar la distribución conocida de dicha especie en el país y conocer las plantas asociadas a la misma. Para ello, se realizaron colectas en David y localidades próximas, como Alanje, Boquerón, Bugaba y el Corregimiento de Chiriquí. Se colectaron especímenes adultos del saltamontes, los cuales fueron montados e identificados posteriormente en Cerro Punta, Chiriquí, utilizando como apoyo claves taxonómicas, literatura especializada y se revisó dos colecciones entomológicas. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que, la especie de saltamontes observada frecuentemente en David y localidades próximas correspondió a Taeniopoda varipennis Rehn, 1905 (Orthoptera: Romaleidae), la cual ha sido reportada previamente y no representa una alarma para la Provincia ni tampoco para Panamá, dada la amplia distribución de esta especie en el país. Las colectas realizadas amplían los reportes de la especie para la Provincia de Chiriquí, además de que, durante la investigación se recibió reportes confirmativos de la especie en las Provincias de Veraguas, Coclé, Panamá Oeste y Panamá. En cuanto a la vegetación asociada, se encontró 13 especies diferentes de plantas, confirmando su hábito polífago. Los Acridoidea merecen especial atención, por su capacidad de afectar tanto vegetación silvestre como plantas de interés. Se recomienda continuar investigando este taxón.

Abstract:
This study attempted to specify logit models for bulkers transporting mostly thermal coal from the East Coast of Colombia to Chile through the Panama Canal compared to the alternative route. The preliminary proposed predictors for the logit models included voyage cost variables and Canal's attributes. For the route choice of coal from the East Coast of Colombia to Chile, voyage cost factors such as Panama Canal cost, distance difference between Panama versus alternative route, post arrival of vessel to the next port and the maximum transit draft were important factors in this choice, as well as Panama Canal attributes such as vessel arrivals at the Panama Canal and the Panamax Plus requirement to transit the neopanamax locks. The route choice involved the Panama Canal and Cape Horn/Magellan Strait in the Southern tip of South America. This study analyzed coal traffic between October 1, 2016, and September 30, 2020, and briefly discussed the future of coal movements through Panama, given Chile's long term plans to generate electricity using renewanable energy sources and hydrogen. This paper is a contribution to the discrete choice literature and attempted to provide insights into route choice factors involving the Panama Canal, proposing new preliminary explanatory variables to better understand route choices that may apply in future Panama Canal studies. The study will be a contribution to the universal maritime coal transportation literature, and it is a continuation on research related to the Panama canal, particularly on route choices using AIS information.

Le Canal de Panama est une référence nationale et mondiale. L’idée d’un canal a émergé dès la colonie espagnole. Cette thèse est une étude sociocritique qui représente une vision littéraire des faits historiques. Ces faits révèlent les perturbations de la société panaméenne marquée par la présence des sociétés étrangères tout au long de l’histoire de l’Isthme de Panama : la période coloniale, la période d’union à la Colombie et la présence états-unienne installée sur le territoire de Panama en raison de l’existence du Canal. Cette réalité historique nous révèle que le Canal représente une manifestation sociale et identitaire que les écrivains enregistrent comme la mémoire d'une société. Cette étude permettra de révéler une relation entre les aspects historiques et le discours littéraire qui naît de la réalité controversée et complexe qui a eu un impact dans la vie du peuple de Panama et de l'Amérique Latine. Ce problème oblige à voir le discours comme une expérience collective et sociale couplée avec le travail et les expériences des auteurs devenant la voix de la société. L’Isthme de Panama et le Canal sont un passage obligé pour le commerce mondial qui a engendré la migration, le mélange culturel, des idiosyncrasies et la mise en place d'une cellule impérialiste qui a lacéré la nationalité et l’identité du peuple panaméen
The panama canal is a national and global reference. The canal’s idea emerged from the Spanish colony. This thesis is a Social critic study which represents a literary vision of the historical events. Those facts reveal disturbance of the Panamanian society marked by the presence of foreign society all along the Isthmus of Panama history: The colonial period, the Colombia’s union period and the presence of the north American settled in the Panamanian territory for the Panamanian canal. This historical reality reveals that Panama canal represent a social and identity manifestation which writers describe as the memory of the society. This study reveals a relation between the historical aspects and the literary discourse which is born from the controversy and complex reality that impact the Panamanian lives and the Latin Americans. This problem obliged to see the discourse as a collective and societal experience linked with the worked of the authors which become the society voce. The Isthmus of Panama and the canal are a obliged crossing for the international business which leads to migration, the cultural mix, the idiosyncrasies, and the creation of an imperialist unit which tear apart the identity and nationality of the Panamanian people
El Canal de Panamá es una referencia mundial. La idea de un canal por el Istmo data de la colonia española. Esta tesis es un estudio sociocrítico que representa una visión literaria de los hechos históricos. Estos hechos revelan las perturbaciones de la sociedad panameña marcadas por la presencia de sociedades extranjeras a lo largo de su historia: el periodo colonial, el periodo de unión a Colombia y el periodo de la presencia de los Estados Unidos instalada sobre el territorio de Panamá en razón de la existencia del Canal. Esta realidad nos revela que el Canal de Panamá representa una manifestación social e identitaria que los escritores registran como memoria de una sociedad. Este estudio permitirá revelar una relación entre los aspectos históricos y el discurso literario que nace de la realidad controvertida y compleja que ha tenido un impacto en la vida del pueblo panameño y de América Latina. Este problema obliga a ver el discurso poético como experiencia colectiva y social amalgamada al trabajo y a las experiencias de los autores que se convierten en voz de la sociedad. Abstract:
The concept of the double in literature has long enjoyed controversy. Originally, its purpose was to function purely as a comic device or to create an atmosphere conducive to the theme of mistaken identity. As the artistic and social milieu changed, the double came to embody unconscious desire in the form of a projected second self. Although its popularity as a theme seems to have waned in recent times, the double has re-emerged with a new twist as it has moved into the realm of postmodernism. Panamanian writer, Enrique Jaramillo Levi, has become synonymous with the concept although to date the theme has not been researched at all in its application to his work. This thesis deals with the treatment of this literary device in the work of Jaramillo Levi from a modern and postmodern perspective by using representative writers from around the world.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on literary and cultural works dealing with Scotland's attempt to colonize Darien, at the Isthmus of Panama, in the 1690s. It establishes Darien as a central trope in Scottish literature by analyzing works from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, including novels, poetry, drama, songs, and political treatises by William Paterson, William Burnaby, Eliot Warburton, Douglas Galbraith, David Nicol, Alistair Beaton, and anonymous female authors. It illustrates how these depictions interact with other political and ideological trajectories in Scotland and the UK, including Jacobitism, Anglo-Scottish relations, and revisionist historical writing. The chapter establishes images of Darien gold and material possession as central structuring devices of Scottish colonial literature, which stand in conflict with depictions of Scotland's alleged kindness towards the indigenous populations of Panama. The chapter argues that narratives of benevolence together with narratives of gold and material possessions turn the colonial utopian tradition into a full-fledged myth of the Scottish Atlantic by the end of the seventeenth century. The mythologization of the colonial sphere together with the mythologization of the Scottish settlers functions as an aesthetic instrument to enter the competition over power in the late-seventeenth-century Atlantic.

Abstract:
The chapter explores the life of Henry Garland Murray, the first black author of Creole literature in the English-speaking Caribbean. Murray was a popular performer of dialect sketches in post-Emancipation Jamaica who eventually published his dialect sketches in book form. The chapter discusses Murray’s travels to Panama and to Boston, where he performed at the famous Lyceum. It investigates the historical moment in the post-Emancipation Jamaica in which Murray authored his stories, particularly the nationalist bent of Jamaicans across racial lines who sought a “native literature” and identified Creole stories as the basis of that literature. It interprets the stories as balancing racist white nostalgia for slavery with an emergent literary nationalism.

Abstract This chapter discusses the epistemic value of a community-based, participatory mapping approach to archaeological survey, based on research co-created with the Indigenous Emberá tribe in Darién Province, Panama. Rather than initiating survey with preconceived criteria for identifying archaeological sites, we mapped landscapes of place-based knowledge, as envisioned by our community partners. This collaborative approach represents an innovation in purposive (as opposed to statistical) archaeological survey, an essential phase of research—especially in low-visibility environments—that has been neglected by literature on archaeological method. Our method centers local conceptions of place and (often fluid) boundaries, as well as history and story. We highlight the role that participatory mapping can play in the development of critical Indigenous cartographies, as well as its value in supporting Indigenous-led movements for sovereignty and long-term ecological stewardship, including gathering evidence for use in land claim cases.

Abstract:
The American continent extends over 12,000 kilometres from Alaska to Cape Horn, and encompasses an enormous variety of environments from arctic to tropical. For the purposes of this discussion, such a huge variety has to be simplified into a few major geographical units within the three regions of North, Central, and South America (Fig. 7.1). Large tracts of Alaska and modern Canada north of the 58th parallel consist of tundra, which extends further south down the eastern coast of Labrador. To the south, boreal coniferous forests stretch eastwards from Lake Winnipeg and the Red River past the Great Lakes to the Atlantic, and westwards from the slopes of the Rockies to the Pacific. The vast prairies in between extend southwards through the central United States between the Mississippi valley and the Rockies, becoming less forested and more open as aridity increases further south. South of the Great Lakes the Appalachian mountains dominate the eastern United States, making a temperate landscape of parallel ranges and fertile valleys, with sub-tropical environments developing in the south-east. The two together are commonly referred to as the ‘eastern Woodlands’ in the archaeological literature. On the Pacific side are more mountain ranges such as the Sierra Nevada, separated from the Rockies by arid basins including the infamous Death Valley. These drylands extend southwards into the northern part of Central America, to what is now northern Mexico, a region of pronounced winter and summer seasonality in temperature, with dryland geology and geomorphology and xerophytic vegetation. The highlands of Central America, from Mexico to Nicaragua, are cool tropical environments with mixed deciduous and coniferous forests. The latter develop into oak-laurel-myrtle rainforest further south in Costa Rica and Panama. The lowlands on either side sustain a variety of tropical vegetation adapted to high temperatures and frost-free climates, including rainforest, deciduous woodland, savannah, and scrub. South America can be divided into a number of major environmental zones (Pearsall, 1992). The first is the Pacific littoral, which changes dramatically from tropical forest in Colombia and Ecuador to desert from northern Peru to central Chile. This coastal plain is transected by rivers flowing from the Andes, and in places patches of seasonal vegetation (lomas) are able to survive in rainless desert sustained by sea fog.
