Abstract:
The irruption of Mexico’s highland Maya on the world stage with the 1994 New Year’s Day uprising by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation generated a torrent of publications. Relatively neglected in this literature is the deconstruction of costumbre (ancestral Maya tradition) by Maya youth dislocated by Mexico’s early-1980s economic collapse. In one exemplary Tzotzil Maya pueblo, the acquisition of biblical literacy and the cognitive skills it entails in Catholic Church–sponsored courses oriented to liberation theology propelled a generational religious revolt. The ensuing reclamation of a

Through a linguistic-literary study we deal with recognizing and explaining the characteristics of the Tzotzil story "Pepench'uch". Our objective is to explore the aspects that make up the narrative structure of the indigenous tale from the perspective of narratology and from the perspective of stylistics. We make special reference to literary creation as a starting point to observe the worldview of the Tzotzil culture in its oral traditions and in its linguistic expressions. The acceptance of this form of analysis of the stories that arise directly from the indigenous popular narratives can f

The so-called Zona Norte on the outskirts of San Cristóbal de Las Casas in the south of México represents a typical “poverty belt” described in the literature on Latin American favelas and slums. An area densely populated by Tzotzil- and Tzeltal-speaking people, migrants from the rural communities from the surrounding highlands, Zona Norte is, in many ways, a typical example of an informal urban settlement, and it bears the stigma usually attached to these places – a lawless, dangerous, no-go zone. The aim of this article is to present three different examples of how this territorial stigmatis

SummaryIn 1951, Mexico's Instituto Nacional Indigenista (INI) established a coordinating center for a pilot development project in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. INI administrators sought to draw Tzotzil‐ and Tzeltal‐speaking indigenous communities that radiated around San Cristóbal into identification with the Mexican state and its political mythology of racial‐cultural mixture, or mestizaje. To do so, the INI built roads. State investment in the transportation infrastructure of indigenous Chiapas enabled the geographical mobility of scores of U.S. anthropologists and students who used
