King, Zachary Harrison. "Comic book realism: sincerity, ethics, and the superhero in contemporary American literature." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6782.

Full text
Abstract:
Comic Book Realism: Sincerity, Ethics, and the Superhero in Contemporary American Literature reads a trio of recent American novels in the context of superhero comics, the influence of which looms large over these texts but has for one reason or another been largely neglected by critics. Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Jonathan Lethem’s The Fortress of Solitude, and Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao feature protagonists whose immersion in their comic book collections translates into their lives by allowing them to comprehend and interact with the world in the language of the superhero metaphor. I argue that these texts should be studied because of, and not despite, their affiliation with superhero comics, against what seems to be a latent critical bias which has led many to overlook or disregard the superheroic elements of these texts. Understanding how Chabon, Lethem, and Díaz engage with the superhero genre is essential to understanding their engagement with issues of identity, ethical responsibility, and masculinity. Daniel Bautista has read Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao as a work not of magical realism but of something new, “comic book realism,” which blends a realist approach to literature with popular culture citations in order to represent with accuracy the myriad cultural influences coming to bear on his characters’ lives. I suggest that Bautista’s label should be extended to Chabon, Lethem, and a variety of other authors who are engaging with the genre as Díaz does; in so doing, I connect a variety of novels which have either seldom been studied before or have never been studied in connection with each other. I begin by examining comic book realism’s affinity with emerging theories about the literary movement following postmodernism, which some have dubbed “post-postmodernism.” I argue that comic book realism’s approach to questions of identity, as informed by the dynamic between superhero and alter ego, aligns with Adam Kelly’s sense of a post-postmodern New Sincerity, which rejects any ironic valence between identity and mass culture; consequently, the novels of comic book realism unironically engage with superhero comics as tools for identity formation. I then turn to Levinasian ethics in order to address the charge that superhero comics are solely escapist; instead, I argue that escapism in these novels necessitates an act of memory, an ethical awareness of the absence from which these characters are attempting to escape. These texts, then, are not unethical in their attempts to escape historical atrocities like the Holocaust. Rather, they constitute an ethical act of remembrance in foregrounding this absence. In my penultimate chapter, I take up the question of masculinity, so central to the gendered space of superhero comics, arguing that the novels of comic book realism reject the hypermasculine standard of the superhero in favor of what I call an ideal of “mild-mannered masculinity,” after the superhero’s alter ego. Compared to the virile and confident Superman identity, Clark Kent represents a model of masculinity that is weak and timid, a model valorized by Chabon, Lethem, and Díaz. In my final chapter, I take stock of the contributions of women writers to the genre of comic book realism, whose work is overlooked by the presupposition that superhero comics are a boy’s domain. Here I find that the women writers evince a need to create their own space in the superhero genre, while I suggest that recent trends in the genre suggest that the next generation of women writers may engage with the genre in a different, somewhat unpredictable way.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research described in this essay is, by analysing the content of comic books, to (1) evaluate comic books as material for teaching, (2) if possible, to create an exercise that could be used in the classroom in which comic books are used for teaching ESL and (3) to suggest innovative material and related tasks that could be used to introduce students to issues related to meaning, with the focus on “literal or speaker meaning”, “multimodality” and “deixis”, and drawing upon principles and concepts described within the disciplines of semiotics, semantics and pragmatics. Accordingly, the thesis questions of this essay are described as follows: If possible, how could comic books be used in the classroom as an alternative material for teaching the ESL? If possible, how could comic books be used to introduce students to issues related to meaning through linguistic approaches, with the aid of semantics, semiotics and pragmatics?  Comic books, in theory and in practice, could be used in the classroom as an alternative material for teaching the English language and introduce students to issues related to meaning through linguistic approaches, with the aid including semantics, semiotics and pragmatics. Furthermore, the material used in this essay is just a small fraction of possible material that is available to teachers, and there are numerous ways of using comic books in teaching aspects of language from varied perspectives.

Darowski, John J. "Mythic Symbols of Batman." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2007. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1226.

Full text
Abstract:
Batman has become a fixture in the popular consciousness of America. Since his first publication in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, he has never ceased publication, appearing in multiple titles every month as well as successfully transitioning into other media such as film and television. A focused analysis of the character will reveal that Batman has achieved and maintained this cultural resonance for almost seventy years by virtue of attaining the status of a postmodern American mythology. In both theme and function, Batman has several direct connections to ancient mythology and has adapted that form into a distinctly American archetype. And as a popular cultural symbol, he has shown remarkable malleability to reflect the attitudes of his contemporary culture. An examination of Batman's enduring and changing characteristics will reveal insights into American values, culture and history during the twentieth and into the twenty-first centuries.

Rheeder, A. O. I. "Bitterkomix : teks, konteks, interteks, en die literere strokies van Conrad Botes en Anton Kannemeyer." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/930.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Phil) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2000<br>230 leaves printed single pages, numbered pages 1-230.Includes bibliography.Digitized at 600 dpi grayscale to pdf format (OCR),using an Bizhub 250 Konica Minolta Scanner.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Anton Kannemeyer and Conrad Botes have been publishing Bitterkomix,, their comics magazine, for nearly a decade in South Africa. These comics are a structured satyrical attack on the South African and specifically Afrikaans culture. Both artists employ different narrative strategies to convey their sometimes shocking message. The reaction on their writing and drawing shows an unwillingness in certain academic circles to analyse their texts critically. As a result Bitterkomix has drawn very little academic attention. This unwillingness is a product of the modernist approach to the comic as "low" literature. Modernists didn't regard comics as worthy material for critical analyses. The literary paradigm shift towards popular culture, and therefore comics, and the pluralistic reading strategy ofpostmodemism make it possible for an academic approach towards this previously ill-treated art form. This thesis is an attempt to suggest an approach strategy to Bitterkomix as a South African underground comics magazine. As a backdrop the study looks at the development of comics in general, as well as the changes that took place in the traditional approach strategies to the modem comic. It also focusses on selected texts by Kannemeyer and Botes to demonstrate how Bitterlwmix functions as an underground comic in the changing South African society. The writers draw upon methods and strategies used by underground comix artists in the United States during the sixties. Their specific employment of the drawing styles and narrative contents of artists like Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson and also the Belgian artist, Herge, makes intertextuality one of the strongest postmodemist aspects of Bitterlwmix. Botes's and Kannemeyer's combined use of intertextuality and other postmodemist metafictional narrative strategies gives Bitterlwmix a literary value that requires an academic approach.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Anton Kannemeyer en Conrad Botes se strokiestydskrif Bitterkomix verskyn reeds bykans 'n dekade in Suid-Afrika.

Abstract:
The following study examined identity construction and community formation within the comic book fan community on the social media website, Twitter It had three objectives It investigated how comic book fans constructed their respective identities on Twitter, explored how fans came to identify with the comic book community and why it formed, and aimed to discover how the community was maintained and expanded The study applied an ethnographic method that relied on the analysis of dialogue Ten comic book fans (five males, five females) that frequently used Twitter to communicate with other fans were video interviewed It was found that comic book fans constructed their identities using their Twitter biography and profile picture and they all believed they were communicating their true and genuine selves The biography, profile picture, and tweets reinforced the rhetoric of what it meant to be a comic book fan It was this visual and written rhetoric that enabled comic book fans to identify with one another and bring the community into being Without this rhetoric, there is no community The community maintained itself through the continued reinforcement of this rhetoric It expanded itself by bringing comic book fans from different backgrounds, locations, and nationalities together online around a shared interest The study also found that the relationships formed within the community could develop into real friendships, the same caliber of friendship that individuals would normally have with those they knew and met in real life.

Abstract:
This thesis examines and argues that superhero narratives, beginning with their comic book origins in the early twentieth century, exhibit many of the qualities found in folklore. Furthermore, these narratives not only demonstrate a folkloric evolution across multi-media formats, including printed work, television, and film, but that they fit within classic hero narrative structures posited by various folklore theorists. The hero theories presented by Lord Raglan, Vladimir Propp, and Joseph Campbell, along with traditional folklore patterns of dynamism and conservatism discussed by Barre Toelken, Alan Dundes, and others, support the assertion that folklore can, and does, exist and propagate in the mass media popular culture sphere. What follows is an academic analysis of core folklore elements, as well as a presentation of how these core qualities can be found in superhero narratives, and how the discipline of folklore may benefit from a study of these narratives.

Full text
Abstract:
Assim, procura-se dar à prática da leitura e à formação de leitores seu verdadeiro e merecido protagonismo, da mesma maneira que as HQs entram como possibilidade de "profanação" do currículo, sem negá-lo, porém ampliando noções e construindo, assim, um projeto de leitura que, sem abandonar a necessidade vital de interagir com o texto literário, torna-se menos "quadrado".<br>Thinking the comic books in schools, today, still means remembering the subversive function schools must have, either by the dialogue between different languages, or as justification to motivate imagery lecture, point related to a special aesthetic fruition that is not usually encouraged in the same emphasis as literature. This work aims at bringing facts like these in order to make questions about the Literature domains in High School, as well as observing the resources used to discuss the text‘s ideas and lecture in classrooms. So, the point of view of this work is based on a proposal and dialogical perspective, from where it‘s possible to see sequential and literary art next to each other, to estimulate an investigative attitude in students – who are able to consider different possibilities of interpretation, specially using the intertextuality concept – and to notice the subversive characteristic of one language in comparison to the other – specially graphic novel‘s one in relation to the literary text. In this way, this work aims at giving to the practicing of lecture and to the lectors formation its real importance, in the same way as comic books appear as a possibility of ―desecration‖ of the scholar course, without denying it, but extending ideas and building a lecture project less ―square‖.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to investigate strategies to promote the formation of literary readers through the reading of literary works adapted into Comic Books. This study focus on the readers/students first contact with Literature in Comic Books at the beginning of their secondary school, aiming at reading the book Sr. William Shakespeare teatro, by Marcia Williams. Considering present researches in the field of mother tongue teaching, its been verified that there are many challenges and dilemmas in the formation of proficient readers. Reading social practices in contemporary society demand abilities and competences from the reader on various fields, codes and means of expression all together, many times, in only one text, in the most varied formats and media. In a scenario formed by texts and multiple hybrid means of expression, there is space for the questioning about which knowledge and competences are needed for the student to effectively achieve the aim of reading, in other words, the building of meaning. Interwoven in the same piece of work, the literature, the art of vocabulary usage, and the Comic Books, sequential art, create an inter-semiotic text, rich in possibilities to the developing reader, besides being a propitious field to the esthetic initiation. Starting from these considerations and hypothesis, this study intends to investigate the interaction between the reader, the work and its authors in order to reflect upon socio and meta-cognitive reading aspects. It is intended to contribute to the discussions about the literary reader formation and the relevance of specific works and forms of expression in this process. To do so, this case study has proposed the investigation through the use of questionnaires, reading diaries and verbal protocol to subsidize the knowledge and thought about the Literature in Comic Books reading process.

Assim, gênero, ao invés de ser a essência de algo, seria performático, no sentido em que cria aquilo que pretende expressar.<br>Comic books have been gaining space in academic discussions in the last years (GARCÍA, 2012). Thus, among the several issues to be analyzed, the female status in the genre has also gained visibility. The comic book genre is considered to be highly masculine (MELLETTE, 2012) and, as a consequence, the stories present several female stereotypes, such as the mother, the romantic interest, or the damsel in distress. Because of that, we think it is important to analyze female representation in the narratives of comic books, focusing on Sandman (1989-1996), written by Neil Gaiman. We will focus on the female characters of the Endless family – Death, Despair, and Delirium – as well as the character of Desire. To do so, we will use the concept of gender performativity proposed by Judith Butler which shows gender as being discursively created and imposed by social practices (BUTLER, 2014). Gender would be formed by the repetition and stylization of the body, which would, then, lead to the production of a seemly natural structure of being (BUTLER, 2014). Gender is not the essence of something, but instead it is performatic, in the sense that it creates that which it intends to express.

Homer, Jarrod. "Ethnic peculiarity and universal appeal : the ambivalence of transition in mid-twentieth century Jewish American culture." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2012. http://www.manchester.ac.uk/escholar/uk-ac-man-scw:156396.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the contribution of Jewish artists to American popular culture in the mid-twentieth century and argues that the Jewish imagination contains a peculiar ability to simultaneous articulate the concerns of a specifically ethnic identity and a more universal American character. The thesis posits that by exploring how the Jewish community negotiated the space between ethnic identity and an American paradigm, Jewish artists were able to explore the middle ground between individuality and conformity, selfhood and consensus, liberalism and conservatism, tradition and change, and heritage and progress that held a wider pertinence for a more general American audience. The thesis argues that the diversity of the Jewish American imagination at this time can be united by a leitmotif that can be best described as the ambivalence of transition. By examining aesthetically dissimilar texts from a variety of artistic fields, in particular comic books, theatre, cinema, television, and literature, the thesis argues that despite the cultural evolutions that occurred throughout the thirties, forties and fifties, the Jewish voice articulated a continuing concern regarding the relationship between ethnic identity, masculine identity, the individual and mass culture. This last point hints at another preoccupation of this thesis; the texts analysed here all share a narrative focus that explores and represents notions of masculine identity and ideality. In this way, the thesis necessarily focuses upon debates about masculinity within the Jewish imagination and American culture, charting the evolution of the Jewish and American male and their relationship towards notions of performed, consensus, individual and paradigm masculinity. Although there has not necessarily been a desire to fully deny the notion of a continuing thematic preoccupation within the Jewish imaginary, previous scholarship has shown a tendency towards accentuating the eclectic nature of Jewish American culture. Whilst scholars like Paul Buhle and Stephen J. Whitfield recognise the importance of popular culture as an arena in which Jewish artists sought to articulate issues at the heart of Jewish identity and community in the US, their studies focus upon the kaleidoscopic eclecticism of Jewish American culture. The intention of this thesis is to harness the diversity inherent in Jewish cultural expression via the prevailing leitmotif of the ambivalence of transition. In this way the thesis will use the multifarious and textured fabric of mid-century Jewish culture, as well as the simultaneous articulation of both ethnic and more general concerns, to illuminate the understanding of both Jewish identity and American culture throughout the mid-century. Thus, the thesis builds upon work by the likes of Julian Levinson and Hana Wirth-Nesher that revisits ideas of assimilation and attempts to complicate the inexorable movement away from Jewish distinctiveness and identity. Similarly, the thesis builds upon studies by the likes of Pamela Robertson Wojcik and Will Brooker that attempt to accentuate the reductive understanding of the mid-century based upon boundless suburbia and unthinking conformity.

Dycus, Dallas. "Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan: Honing the Hybridity of the Graphic Novel." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/47.

Full text
Abstract:
The genre of comics has had a tumultuous career throughout the twentieth century: it has careened from wildly popular to being perceived as the source of society’s ills. Despite having been relegated to the lowest rung of the artistic ladder for the better part of the twentieth century, comics has been gaining in quality and respectability over the last couple of decades. My introductory chapter provides a broad, basic introduction to the genre of comics––its historical development, its different forms, and a survey of comics criticism over the last thirty years. In chapter two I clarify the nature of comics by comparing it to literature, film, and pictorial art, thereby highlighting its hybrid nature. It has elements in common with all of these, and yet it is a distinct genre. My primary focus is on Chris Ware, whom I introduce in chapter three, a brilliant creator who has garnered widespread recognition and respect. His magnum opus is Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth, the story of four generations of Corrigan men, most of whom have been negligent in raising their children. Jimmy Corrigan, as a result, is an introverted, insecure thirty–something–year–old man. Among comics creators Ware is unusual in that his story does not address socio–political issues, like most of his peers, which I discuss in chapter four. Jimmy Corrigan is an isolated tale with a very specific focus. Ware’s narrative is somewhat like those of William Faulkner, whose stories have a narrow focus, revolving around the lives of the inhabitants of Yoknapatawpha county, rather than encompassing the vast landscape of national socio–political concerns. Also, in chapter five I explore the intriguing combination of realist and Gothic elements––normally at opposite ends of the generic continuum––that Ware merges in Jimmy Corrigan. This feature is especially interesting because it is another way that his work explores aspects of hybridity. Finally, in my conclusion I examine the current state of comics in American culture and its future prospects for development and success, as well as the potential for future comics criticism.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Although immensely popular with American boys upon his debut in 1938, Superman has gradually lost relevance with the postmodern generation. DC Comics has rewritten the character numerous times in an attempt to regain lost popularity, but the problem lies in an aspect of his character they refuse to alter – his invulnerability. Superman’s invulnerable body was engineered to quell the fears America harbored towards technological progress, but his impervious physique now renders him obsolete. Boys in postmodern America, under the influence of post-Enlightenment body values, now connect with vulnerable comic book heroes whose bodies more closely match their own. This paper examines the sociological reasons for the shift in Superman’s popularity by comparing the body values of 1938 with those of today, and concludes that while Superman might have succeeded as a modern hero, he fails as a postmodern one.

Abstract:
No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Eliana Cristina Buffon.pdf: 4230571 bytes, checksum: 5a012ebfd900f90b62741270e1b8ed00 (MD5)<br>Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-13T18:43:20Z (GMT). The book above mentioned was chosen for this study because it is part of 2012´s Library in the School National Program (PNBE 2012), a range of books aimed at the early years of Elementary School in Brazil. The study means to carry out an analysis on enunciation procedures used in the construction of the work, and which can be analyzed in the context of schooled reading, meaning to contribute to students´ literacy learning process. The research can be justified on the fact that students tend to present poor reading skills, as shown in assessments made public about this area, on the complexity of the cultural products aimed at the young reader, and, besides, on the insertion of comic strips in the PNBE range of books. The investigation follows the Education, Language and Technology approach, and it is part of the Post-Graduation in Education Program of the Caxias do Sul University (PPGEd/UCS). It is also part of a research project called “Challenges and welcomings in children´s literature: the mediation of the literary reading”, which has been approved by FAPERGS and which means to study the books that have been short-listed to make up the PNBE range of books for the early years of Elementary Education. Among the authors whose ideas have contributed to the research there are: Mikhail Bakhtin (2006), Lev S. Vygotsky (1998), both of which helped on reflections upon language; Will Eisner (2012), Moacy Cirne (1972, 1973, 2000), Álvaro de Moya (1993, 2002), Paulo Ramos (2009) and Valdomiro Vergueiro (2009), who discuss aspects of the language used in comic strips; Brian Street (1984), with his studies on literacy, and Joseph Schwarcz (1982), who elaborates on the role played by illustration on children´s books, among others. The study is organized in chapters, which contemplate (a) the relations between education and language, considering the school as a space for literacy; (b) the methodological processes of the research, and (c) an analysis of the work and indication of the elements present in the making up of the title, which should be taken into consideration in the mediation of literary reading. It was the analytical description of aspects of the work chosen that guided the method, aiming to pinpoint the procedures used in the construction of this discursive modality present in the Brazilian schools´ libraries. As a result, it stands out in the studied corpus that comic books contemplate themes that make it possible to identify the student with the expressed conflict, as it presents situations that are present in daily life and that there are instances in the way the narrative is enunciated which need to be taken into consideration when mediated reading is proposed in the school environment. Last but not least, one highlights the importance of teachers being familiar with the language used in comic strips, besides its specificity as a genre so as to make it possible for them to contribute for the students´ literacy.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to explore the way heterosexism and homophobia are present in the coding that has created an implied and monstrous queer identity for the Joker, present in many versions of the character over the past forty years. Through close readings of several of the Joker’s most iconic appearances, queer theory texts, and analytical essays on pop culture, this paper will analyze the use of queer signifiers present in the comics and the way that these portrayals of the Joker are rife with harmful and heterocentric perceptions of what comic creators have seen as necessary signifiers for queerness. Additionally, I will be using knowledge gleaned from my own preexisting work with fan and cultural studies in order to talk about the way that this portrayal of the Joker has been developed within fandom/fan communities and how it is continually replicated in superhero media.

Abstract:
This thesis examines shojo manga (Japanese comics for girls) as a site of the subversion of gender. The focus will be on stories about cross-dressing, as the crossdressed heroine poses from the outset questions about the nature of girls within shojo manga and the girls who are supposedly reading the texts. The analysis takes place at two levels: visual language and narrative. Over the course of five chapters, focusing on a couple of series in each, this thesis will show the various ways categories of gender and sex are undermined in five different subgenres. Yet gender norms are recuperated in the end. The manga always return to the figure of the shojo , the ambiguously gendered "not-quite-female" female that must expire at adulthood and the regulatory function heterosexuality plays in this inevitable demise. Nevertheless shojo manga readers need not necessarily share this end. The various ways that the reader is positioned both visually and narratively suggests that her gender and sexuality remains ambiguous and indefinable.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is to look at Geoff John's Justice League in the "New 52" universe. More specifically, the research concentrates on the relationship of the members of DC Comics "Trinity," Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The three heroes have a special relationship that spans over 75 years, and now, with the "New 52," there is an opportunity to examine the relationship from its beginning to its end in the modern era of comic book history. The scope of this project will span eight graphic novels and five years of storytelling. To properly evaluate the relationship of "The Trinity" this thesis will look at research on friendship, interpersonal relationships, and management styles, all through the lens of a thorough character study on each hero. In the end, "The Trinity" will grow from uneasy allies to friends to family. They will solidify their relationship through fighting for their lives, making mistakes together, and ultimately saying goodbye to each other. This thesis will find their relationship is unique amongst comic book characters and should be considered the archetype for all the superhero teams that would come after their creation. Moving forward, to build upon this research one should take the analysis approach followed in this thesis and apply it to either the "Rebirth" version of the Justice League or the 2017 Justice League film which also will feature a version of "The Trinity"

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to advance understanding of the ways in which discourses of reading, literacy and culture were used to reify class stratification in mid-twentieth-century America. This project uses the examples of The Reader’s Digest magazine and Classics Illustrated comic books to assess the adaptation and the ideologies surrounding textual form. It examines the efforts of self-proclaimed cultural elites to identify and denigrate middlebrow reading habits through dismissive critiques of texts and audiences as one moment in an on-going historical process of domination and exclusion. These avenues of exploration will reveal the complexity and variance of class definition in a pluralist democracy which, it turns out, are still very much a part of contemporary culture. This study aims to explain the incentives and travel patterns for people who have consumed popculture tourism. Pop-culture refers to popular products such as video-games, comic-books, literature, film and t.v-shows. Pop-culture tourism refers to destinations and attractions based on popular culture products such as conventions, events, exhibitions, theme parks and destinations. This study takes on a qualitative approach in order to do so. The results were then analyzed through four different theories; Bourdieu’s theory on different capitals, his theory on habitus, his theory on fields and Lundberg &amp; Lexhagen’s figure: Pop-culture Tourism: A Research Model. The results showed that the respondents social upbringing and (social) media consumption plays a central role in order for individuals to consume and partake in pop-culture tourism. Results did also show that cultural capital and social capitals was prominent for individuals who consume and partake in popculture tourism.<br>Denna studie har som syfte att belysa individers motiv och val att besöka pop-kultursrelaterade attraktioner och destinationer.

Abstract:
This essay examines through a postcolonial analysis of the intermedial aspects of comicbooks how stereotypes and depictions of the Other and the alien are formed in Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique. The aim has been to call attention to the importance of the relationship between text and image to create meaning, as well as to gain a deeper insight into how different stereotypes are created and their function. Hergé illustrated the Tintin-books according to something that would come to be known as ”The Clear Line”, a way of drawing that focused on the readbility of the images. In this essay I argue that the simplicity of these readable images were used in his work as comic relief but also to create an awareness of deeper social issues in the world. There is a notable difference between Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique where in the first album Hergé seems to be governed by these stereotypes, fully embracing them without questioning. In the second one however he is consciously and playfully using these images to make the reader aware of the problems with Othering, simultaneously using recognizable symbols that everyone can understand but with a critical gaze that not only reveals these problems but also condemns them. The use of these symbols and stereotypes highlights the importance of the relationship between text and image, as signification and meaning can differ depending on translation and the words used.

Abstract:
This is a thesis that details the process of writing a short 30 page novel, and then converting the subsequent story into a graphic format via illustrations and into a comic book layout. The story itself deals in reworking our learned assumptions of good and evil, specifically in the supernatural and human possibility for both. The comic book format is an exploration of my reader’s different responses to the written and the graphic.

Dantzler, Perry Dupre. "Static, Yet Fluctuating: The Evolution of Batman and His Audiences." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_theses/73.

Abstract:
The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

Israelson, Per. "Ecologies of the Imagination : Theorizing the participatory aesthetics of the fantastic."

Full text
Abstract:
This book is about the participatory aesthetics of the fantastic. In it, the author argues that the definition of the fantastic presented by Tzvetan Todorov in 1970 can be used, provided it is first adapted to a media-ecological framework, to theorize the role of aesthetic participation in the creation of secondary worlds. Working within a hermeneutical tradition, Todorov understands reader participation as interpretation, in which the creative ambiguities of the literary object are primarily epistemological. However, it is here argued that the aesthetic object of the fantastic is also characterized by material ambiguity. The purpose of this dissertation is then to present a conceptual framework with which to theorize the relation between the material and the epistemological ambiguity of the fantastic. It is argued that such a framework can be found in an ecological understanding of aesthetic participation. This, in turn, entails understanding human subjectivity as a process always already embodied in a material environment. To this extent, the proposed theoretical framework questions the clear and oppositional distinction between form and matter, as well as that between mind and body, nature and culture, and human and non-human, on which a modern and humanist notion of subjectivity is based. And in this sense, the basic ecological assumptions of this dissertation are posthumanist, or non-humanist. From this position, it is argued that an ecological understanding of participation offers a means to reformulate the function of a number of concepts central to studying the aesthetics of the fantastic, most notably the concepts of media, genre and text. As the fantastic focuses on the creation of other worlds, it is an aesthetics of coming into being, of ontogenesis. Accordingly, it will be argued that the participatory aesthetics of the fantastic operationalizes the ontogenesis of media, genres and texts. By mapping the ontogenesis of three distinct media ecologies – the media ecology of fantasy and J. R. R. Tolkien’s secondary world Middle-earth; the media ecology of the American comic book superhero Miracleman; and the media ecology of William Blake – this book argues that the ecological imagination generates world. Per Israelson has been a doctoral candidate in the Research School of Studies in Cultural History at the department of Culture and Aesthetics, Stockholm University. Ecologies of the Imagination is his dissertation.
