Full textThe present work aims at looking at the figure of the vampire in literature as powerful means of reading and interpreting the fears and anxieties of a specific socio-cultural space. By looking at the evolution of the literary vampire through the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we are able to notice that each of its incarnations dramatically differs from the previous one, and as vampires are reinvented, they engage in a coherent dialog with issues pertaining to their times, in a way that they never lose their relevance. Their heterogeneous existence, explicited in the dissertation primarily through Sheridan LeFanus Carmilla, Bram Stokers Dracula, Richard Mathesons I am Legend, Anne Rices Interview with the Vampire and Octavia Butlers Fledgling, and the different theoretical questions brought on by each of them such as sexuality, alterity and hybridity will lead us to the understanding that the vampire may potentially function as a powerful allegory as it becomes a mirror of the very humanity on which its life depends

Full textFazil Iskander (1929- ) is one of the most representative remaining writers of the Thaw Generation. Due to the lack of recognition of this author in Brazil, the present dissertation consists in the translation of the short-novel that has made him internationally renowned, preceded by a presentation and commentary: Sozvezdie Kozlotura from 1966, or A constelação do Capriuro in Portuguese. Though the prose of Iskander belongs to the Russian satire tradition, along with names like Nikolai Gogol and Mikhail Bulgakov, it carries the singularities of his non-Russian origin. His motherland, Abkhazia, with its proper history and customs, besides reverberating on his works, entwines itself with the Russian-soviet culture in a complex and tense relationship that gives these narratives their unique nature. In this research, it is analyzed the characteristics that make the satire of Iskander so innovative.
Nicolau, Maria da Conceição dos Santos. "A fúria dos tambores: music in African post-colonial literaturea música na literatura pós-colonial Africana." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/17761.
Full textThe following dissertation attempts to discuss the presence of music (from indirect to more direct references) in representative texts of African Post- Colonial literature, in particular, Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Devil on the Cross, and Paulina Chiziane’s Niketche. This dissertation attempts to contextualise the use of music in three African countries, with respect to the historical, social, and cultural backgrounds, as well as to provide an approach to general musical practice and significant aspects of the way music is present in the three novels individually. It is necessary to understand and recognize that music is not only interesting in the analysis of African cultures, but also when analysing certain literary works. I intend to characterise and valorise music from literature or vice-versa. One of the aims of this dissertation is to approach how, through the presence of musical references, we can understand the novel and the cultures of the country portrayed. Focus has often been made on other cultural aspects in the study of these novels, generally with music being dealt with sketchily if at all. These books thus raise a number of questions about human beings, society, and cultural practices, demonstrating the extent to which different aspects of a given society and music are interwoven in complex ways. It is in this interdependence between music and society that we find a point of analysis of different African cultures as of the novels in question.
Kraft, Tobias. "Literatur in Zeiten transnationaler Lebensläufe : Identitätsentwürfe und Großstadtbewegungen bei Terézia Mora und Fabio Morábito." Master's thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2006. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2007/1295/.
Full textThe main focus of this master’s thesis in literary studies is the ‘homo migrans’ (Klaus Bade). This entity is not a uniform archetype of migration, but a conglomeration of subjects who traverse a diverse range of countries, cultures and languages: the eurocolonial and postcolonial migrant, the asylum seeker, the dissident, the labor or family migrant, the refugee, the ethnic repatriate. They all share transnational and often intercontinental paths of trans-border movement. In light of the perpetual acceleration of global migration, it is of crucial importance that the humanities confront and discuss contemporary literature, which deals with the critical and productive dynamics of delocalization, de- and reterritorialization, the loss of homeland and the multiple constructions of belonging. In this thesis, selected works by the German-Hungarian author Terézia Mora and the Mexican-Italian author Fabio Morábito are analyzed to demonstrate the diverse auctorial conditions, aesthetic strategies and leitmotifs that produce literary counterworlds of migration, oscillating conceptions of identity and alienation. From within urban spaces that are oftentimes estranging, perspectives emerge of liminal identities that navigate between different worlds. As the analyses of Mora and Morábito illustrate, modes of identity and movement are literary expressions of ‘Lebenswissen’ (Ottmar Ette). They are therefore an invaluable contribution to our understanding of migration, in an economic, cultural, as well as analytical sense. The thesis takes into account the complete series of literary works that the two authors published until 2006. However, its focal points are Terézia Mora’s novel 'Alle Tage', as well as the short stories of 'También Berlín se olvida' and the lyrical oeuvre of Fabio Morábito.

Full textExplore other ways, until now little followed in order to participate in a meaningful way to the debate about the intelligibility of Macunaíma, this can be taken as the shaft that drives this comparative study. To carry out this comparative research we appeal to Kaydara, not only because it is a masterpiece of african french literature, but also because it brings - the look of the inside of a traditional african society, capable to converse with the brazilian literature, point to shed light on some cultural elements of afro-brazilian origin present in it. So we have been diving in what the vast majority of african societies consider his reference in antiquity: Ancient Egypt. Now, when you put two works of great aesthetic value face to face, which is usually happen is one help to read other, so our approach is no longer unilateral and privilege a relationship of mutual reading, highlighting various consequences.
