Abstract:
This article presents the “Silva rerum” phenomenon, which is a quartet of historical novels by Kristina Sabaliauskaitė, published between 2008 and 2016. It discusses the circumstances of the writer’s debut, the reception of the novel in Lithuania, the general reading of the novels, its place in contemporary Lithuanian prose, and its possible influences on tendencies in Lithuanian prose. Most of the discussion focuses on one of the most important questions arising from this cycle of novels and which is still following it – is “Silva rerum” by Sabaliauskaitė a work of popular literature? Why is such a question even raised and is such a designation dividing literature even meaningful? Looking for answers to this question, we can glance at the concepts used in the Anglo-Saxon literary tradition and by applying them to Lithuanian literature, we intend to show why they – because of existing traditions and historical circumstances – are not accurate and sufficient enough to call the “Silva rerum” quartet a “popular novel”.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to show the evolution of the historical novel that began in the era of independence, to highlight the peculiarities of male and female historical narratives, and to capture critical reactions and tendencies of assessment of that kind of novel. At the beginning of independence, the poetic prose of a minimal story was established in Lithuanian literature, which was created by the most prominent Lithuanian prose writers, and the historical novel made its debut as a complex experience of poetic narration. Poetry and prose focused on archetypal narratives, national consciousness and ethnic semantics and were characterized by an abundance of associations, but not by a clear storyline. Among common variations of the male historical novel, we can observe historical novels written by women, which have won both literary awards and readers’ approval.

Abstract:
The present paper relies on a combination of corpus linguistics and discourse analysis to reveal how food manufacturers construct very specific product identities through product descriptions, which (1) reflect some cultural and institutional values, and (2) have some implications of food ideology. This investigation primarily focuses on the text functions of bread descriptions, the dominant verbal discourses of bread promotion in Lithuania, and the typical linguistic choices used to disseminate these discourses. The data includes product descriptions available on the websites of six major industrial bread bakers in Lithuania and consists of more than 150 product descriptions (approx. 10,000 words). The lexical choices in these texts are evaluated by referring to the Corpus of Contemporary Lithuanian (tekstynas.vdu.lt) as a general reference corpus. The results show that in Lithuanian bread descriptions two text functions dominate: descriptiveness and prepared expressiveness, which further indicates that the target texts are closest to academic prose and fiction. The analysis of collocations and word frequencies supports the prevalence of features characteristic of both academic prose and fiction. This new digital genre is used by producers to disseminate and emphasise certain values and ideologies through explicit verbal references to tradition, inheritance, and continuity.

Abstract:
The presented materials on the reception of Osip Mandelstam’s work were revealed in memoir testimonies, published epistolaries, works on the biography of the writer and scientist Vincas Krėvė and his colleague at the University of Lithuania in Kaunas (Vytautas Magnus University since 1930) Mykolas Banevičius (Mikchail Podshibyakin), and periodicals in Lithuanian and Russian languages. The study showed that among the Lithuanian poets and translators there were connoisseurs of poetry and prose by Mandelstam, but translations into Lithuanian language did not appear during the interwar years. A possible explanation for this is the lack of a demand for this kind of creativity, as the materials of the reception of contemporary Russian literature show. The only text by Mandelstam published in Lithuania in Russian is a translation of the story by Henri Barbusse, reprinted in 1926 by a Kaunas newspaper from a Soviet edition. The only characteristic of his poetry is presented in an article in Russian about the latest Russian poetry, published in 1931 in an academic journal under a pseudonym; its most likely author could be M. Podshibyakin.

Abstract:
Hepatica (Hepatica nobilis) is a very well-known plant, which is common in Lithuania from early times. The works of art are filled with the images of it. The material for this article was collected from works of fiction and prose of the twenty-first century Lithuanian authors including novels, short stories, novellas, tales and other works of similar genres. The whole text is not analysed but rather separate sentences or their fragments – the collocations of hepatica. The material of this research contains 56 works of 46 prose writers, in which the hepatica is portrayed in various ways and purposes. In the compiled collocations the root žibut-/žibuč was located 76 times and žibuokl-/ was mentioned 40 times. The article investigates, which qualities of this plant rise as the most important ones, in other words, what concept of hepatica develops and how. It is found that in most cases Lithuanian prose writers emphasize on visible features of the plant – the colour and shape of the blossoms, their quality to wilt quickly and the like. The most dominant function of the image of hepatica is to express the idea of spring and because of that the parameters of time and space are used frequently in the collocations of hepatica – the exact time of emergence of the blossoms is defined and the growing places of hepaticas are indicated. The smell and purpose of the plant are also becoming quite significant components. It is ascertained that this plant is mostly depicted as the component of traditional Lithuanian scenery, however beside the domestic, realistic and concrete mental image of the plant it is often possible to identify the secondary meanings of the image as well (hepaticas help to express the state and feelings of a character, they become a symbol of faith and hope). Moreover, in the texts of prose there are plenty of cases when hepatica becomes a proper noun – through the process of onimization this title is transferred with a purpose to name people, domestic animals, streets or cafes.

Abstract:
The theoretical problems and practical analysis of utopia and its subgenre dystopia are widely known in the global cultural discourse. Nevertheless, these analyses still remains almost terra incognita in the studies of Lithuanian prose. The aim of this article is to analyse and compare the ambivalent elements in these novels: Vilniaus pokeris (Vilnius Poker) by R. Gavelis, Užkeiktas miestas (The Town under the Spell) by R. Lankauskas, and Anapus rytojaus (Beyond Tomorrow) by J. Jankus. This article is based on the hermeneutical methodology and the context of existentialism. The theoretical part of the article “Dystopian World” describes the main sources, features, and polemical issues of genre. The first practical part “The Social-Historical Subordinated Dystopia in Lithuanian Literature” analyses the concrete historical and cultural features of the dystopian genre. The features of ontological-existential dystopia are described in the second practical part of the paper.

Abstract:
Carnivalisation in literary prose has been gaining prominence both in Lithuanian and German literature. The present paper compares two novels, namely, Johannisnacht by Uwe Timm (1996) and Lietuvis Vilniuje by Herkus Kunčius (2011), related not merely through their themes of current affairs and reflections of the past, but also through poetics which continues the tradition of Carnivalesque. Although the two authors represent distinctly different cultural and literary backgrounds of two countries (West Germany and Lithuania), the novels transcend to a common intercultural space by their similar narrative strategies and carnivalised worldview.

Abstract:
This dissertation will attempt to present the foundations of the positivist philosophy and worldview. It will also attempt to show the spread of Lithuanian positivism in the context of the dominant positivism of Russia and Poland, and to thoroughly examine the exploration and interpretation of positivism in the mind of Lithuanian fictional literary criticism. This study raises the question as to whether one can in general speak of the adoption of certain models of literature from didactic literature to positivist literature. Aside from discussing different time periods and different literary styles of the nineteenth century (the beginning of Lithuanian didactic literature, while the Lithuanian Cultural Renaissance was still in its embryonic stage; the maturation of didactic literature and the beginning of the Lithuanian Cultural Renaissance; and positivist literature as well as Lithuania's Cultural Renaissance in full force) this work also discusses the pieces having the characteristics of the positivist literature written during the prohibition of the press. The work will also attempt to explain what positivist personalities were significant during the second half of the nineteenth century, and to what professional and social groups these people belonged, along with reconstructing their aesthetic positivist program. This dissertation about the spread of positivism in the prose from the end of the nineteenth century is the first of its kind done in Lithuanian literary... [to full text]

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to analyze informal register in prose fiction. The analysis focuses on the representation of text messaging, foreigners’ oral discourse, swear words and references to sexual activities, as well as parts of the body in both the original and translation of feminist bestsellers Sex and the City (1997) and Lipstick Jungle (2005) by Candice Bushnell. The analysis is based on the theory of feminist bestseller and the use of spoken discourse in written language. The paper is divided into six parts and also includes eight appendices. Part One introduces the aim of the paper and gives a short summary of the feminist bestsellers Sex and the City (1997) and Lipstick Jungle (2005) by Candice Bushnell. Part Two presents a short history of feminist bestseller and outlines the theoretical background for the analysis. Part Three focuses on the informal register in prose fiction, namely in the feminist bestsellers. Further, Part Four discusses the differences between spoken and written language, as well as ways to imitate spoken language in the literary translation. An analysis of the cases found in the two feminist bestsellers is presented in Part Five where Chapter 5.1 presents the problems concerning texting and is further divided into Section 5.1.1 which is devoted to the theoretical approach to translating text messages and Section 5.1.2 which analyses the examples of text messages. Šio darbo tikslas – ištirti kalbos paribius grožinėje literatūroje. Daugiausia dėmesio skiriama trumpųjų žinučių, užsieniečių šnekamajai kalbai, keiksmažodžiams ir žodynui, kuriuo įvardinamos seksualinės sueitys ir kūno dalys; pavyzdžiai analizei paimti iš tos pačios autorės, Candice Bushnell, dviejų feministinių bestselerių „Seksas ir miestas“ (1997) ir „Lūpdažių džiunglės“ (2005). Darbą sudaro šešios pagrindinės dalys ir dešimt priedų. Pirmojoje dalyje pristatomas darbo tikslas ir pateikiamos trumpos knygų santraukos. Antrojoje dalyje pristatoma feministinių bestselerių istorija ir pateikiama teorinė medžiaga, kuria bus remiamasi praktinėje dalyje. Trečioji dalis dėmesį skiria kalbos paribiams grožinėje literatūroje, šiuo atveju, feministiniams bestseliariams. Kitoje, ketvirtoje dalyje aptariami skirtumai tarp sakytinės ir rašytinės kalbos bei būdai, kuriais rašytinėje kalboje imituojama sakytinė kalba, verčiant grožinę literatūrą. Feministiniuose bestseleriuose „Seksas ir miestas“ (1997) ir „Lūpdažių džiunglės“ (2005) rasti pavyzdžiai nagrinėjami penktojoje dalyje. Skyrius 5.1 skiriamas trumpųjų žinučių rašymo teorinei apžvalgai, kuri pateikiama poskyryje 5.1.1, o poskyris 5.1.2 skiriamas praktinei žinučių rašymo analizei. Abstract:
The subject of this dissertation is the representation of temporality, trauma and sexuality in Antanas Škėma’s fiction. The chapter “Temporal structures” examines temporal order in the writer’s novella “Isaac” according to Genettes narratology. The analysis reveals deliberately inserted mechanisms in the construction of the text, which disrupt the narrative investigation. A survey of temporal structures exposes invented events in the text and the definitions of “factual reality” and “imaginary reality” are introduced. The narrative analysis results in a hypothesis that Škėma’s text has been constructed as an imitation of human memory and as a representation of the factual reality outside the text. The chapters “Representation of trauma” and “Representation of sexual perversion” use Freud’s trauma theory and sexual theory as a method. Trauma appears to constitute the construction of the narrator and his urge to distort temporal links between the narrative and the story. When the narrator in Škėma’s “Isaac” focuses on the depiction of sexually perverted consciousness, the text affects the reader by forcing him to break off his horizons of expectation. The depiction of rape in Škėma’s fiction links the themes of sexuality and power and of sexuality and trauma. The writer detaches the representation of sexuality from the definition of love: sexuality, portrayed in the analyzed texts, appears to create its own norms. This is one of many ways to transform the depiction of sexual perversion into a social norm in Škėma’s narrative. The chapter “Škėma’s Autobiography and literary critics” provides a re-reading of the writer’s autobiography and his journalistic texts. The chapter ”Publication and reception of Škėma’s fiction” provides a compiled reading of earlier research and a survey of the writer’s books published in exile.

Abstract:
Motivated by practice of other schools, Europe Union policies, and The Republic of Lithuania's laws, Lithuanian schools are introducing e-journal systems to support pupils' learning, schools' administrative processes, as well as communication with parents and between different stakeholders of the schools' educational and administrative processes. In production-oriented firms, efficiency gains stemming from the introduction of Information Systems (IS) and Technologies (IT) to support the main functions of the firm can be estimated based on resource consumption and production volumes. In a learning- or knowledge-oriented organization, however, efficiency gains are difficult to estimate for a variety of reasons. Some reasons are a lack of previous research on the topic as well as a lack of practice among schools to monitor the effects of e-learning systems. In this chapter, the authors set the method for assessing changes in performance resulting from the introduction of an e-journal system in a secondary school. Following the theoretical model developed by Gaskin, the authors measure process changes using dimensions of productivity, efficiency, quality, and consistency. Besides describing methods for performance assessment, the study helps better understand the pros and cons of computerization of learning-oriented organizations and suggests venues for improvement in pursuing further computerization of schools in Lithuania.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights how the collapse of communism in eastern Europe and the Soviet Union initiated a new period in the history of the Jews in the area. Poland was now a fully sovereign country, and Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, and Moldova also became independent states. Post-imperial Russia faced the task of creating a new form of national identity. This was to prove more difficult than in other post-imperial states since, unlike Britain and France, the tsarist empire and its successor, the Soviet Union, had not so much been the ruler of a colonial empire as an empire itself. All of these countries now embarked, with differing degrees of enthusiasm, on the difficult task of creating liberal democratic states with market economies. For the Jews of the area, the new political situation allowed both the creation and development of Jewish institutions and the fostering of Jewish cultural life in much freer conditions, but also facilitated emigration to Israel, North America, and western Europe on a much larger scale.

According to data from the Lithuanian Water Supply Association, in 2015 about 124 mln. m³ of ground water was supplied to the network, but only 94 mln. m³ of it was sold, while the remaining share represented water losses – 30 mln. m³ per year. An average water loss level in Lithuania is 24%, varying from 52% to 17%. Local water utilities take a little care of apparent water losses. This article deals with an investigation of apparent losses in Alytus and other cities in Lithuania. The reduction of apparent water losses is quite a different field as it does not require large additional investments and can produce quick and efficient results. Article presents the results on the ways for reduction of apparent water losses in Lithuanian water supply systems. The aim of research is to show that apparent water losses consist of considerable share of water losses and to prove that inconsiderable efforts can significantly cut down water losses and improve the utilities’ financial situation. Article present findings of night water consumption, used for DMA allowed minimum water calculation. Analysing water consumption data in blockhouses the minimum night water volume was determined (0.9 l/h/flat).

Abstract:
The global Business Intelligence (BI) market grew by 10% in 2013 according to the Gartner Report. BI has been the top implementation priority for organizations for many years now. Today organizations require better use of data and analytics to support their business decisions. Internet power and business trend changes have provided a broad term - Big Data. To be able to handle it and leverage a value of having access to Big Data, organizations have no other choice than to get proper systems implemented and working. However traditional methods are not efficient for changing business needs. Long time between project start and go-live causes a gap between initial solution blueprint and actual user requirements in the end of the project. This article presents the latest market trends in BI systems implementation by comparing Agile with traditional methods. It presents a case study provided in a large telecommunications company (20K employees) and the results of a pilot research provided in the three large companies telecommunications, digital and insurance. Both studies prove that Agile methods might be more effective in BI projects from an end-user perspective and give first results and added value in a much shorter time compared to a traditional approach. Organizations often do not have a clear vision of BI requirements. Thus users ask for changes just before a BI product readiness, which Agile ensures in contradiction to traditional methods.

Abstract:
The paper analyses the structural σ-convergence of exports of six CEE countries to the Euro area. The countries are Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, which are members of the Euro area, as well as Bulgaria, which was included in the ERM II currency mechanism on 10.07.2020. The main goals are to measure and compare the structural σ-convergence of exports of the six CEE countries and to prove whether the introduction of the common currency (the euro) has an impact on the convergence. The research consists of the theoretical and empirical parts. The theoretical part systematizes basic concepts of economic, trade, club, and structural convergence. One index method used by his authors to study economic convergence has been adapted to the structural σ-convergence of exports. This is the dissimilarity index of Von Hagen and Traistaru. In the empirical part, the values of the index, by commodity groups, according to SITС, Rev. 4, for the six countries during the period 2002-2018 are determined. The index is calculated also as aggregated, referring to the total exports of the selected countries and for the whole period. The results are presented in graphical form. Based on them, the structural and dynamic characteristics of the convergence and divergence of exports of the six countries compared to the exports of the Euro area are derived. Conclusions are made about achieved the different degree of similarity, that is uncertain and unstable and so the convergence can be only partially attributed to the adoption of the euro. Methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, methods of the empirical index, and comparative analysis are applied.

Abstract:
The quality of water in rivers of central Lithuania is often bad due to intensive anthropogenic activities. When rivers flow through the town’s territory, concentrated pollution, such as rainwater, industrial and productional waste water discharges, contributes to diffuse sources of pollution. If biogenic substances are the main indicators for diffuse pollution, organic matter, expressed as BOD, is the indicator for concentrated pollution. The article provides the 2013 – 2017 monitoring data on the changes of organic matter in the water of the Dotnuvele and Smilga Rivers and discusses the reasons for fluctuations in concentrations of BOD7. The aim of the research is to investigate the changes in the organic matter of the Dotnuvele and Smilga Rivers, depending on meteorological factors. For chemical analysis, water samples were taken quarterly. Water analysis was carried out by the ASU Chemical Analytical Laboratory of Water Resources Engineering Institute. The amount of organic matter (BOD7) is calculated as the difference in oxygen content after 7 days of incubation, while the amount of dissolved oxygen (O2) in the water is determined by the electrochemical probe method. The concentrations of BOD7 and O2 in the water of both rivers is compared with the criteria for assessing the ecological status of surface water bodies. The research has shown that the dissolved oxygen concentrations in rivers’ water are strongly influenced by water temperature and precipitation. The lower the temperature, the more of the dissolved oxygen is found in rivers’ water (r = -0.64). A lower precipitation amount, which reaches the rivers, increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in them (r = -0.45). The increase of BOD7 concentrations in rivers’ water was caused by higher precipitation amount (r = 0.46), higher air (r = 0.41) and lower water temperature (r = -0.41). The ecological status of the Dotnuvele River was usually good, while Smilga was average.
