Abstract:

Abstract:
The South-west Black Sea Coast is facing severe erosion problems that threaten both the population and the immediate eastside properties. Some locations, such as the Karaburun region, are especially vulnerable. In an attempt to reverse the present erosional trend, a coastal defense scheme involving a groin system was introduced in a phased manner. In the present work, the shoreline changes under the influence of a groin system of a sandy beach in Karaburun, Turkey, are studied by using a numerical simulation model (LITPACK). The work is motivated by the considerable erosion and siltation problems caused a sediment deposition near and inside the harbor entrance which prevented the boat traffic and caused a vital problem for the harbor operations. The study’s scope is two-fold: to help in understanding the dynamics of the beach based on results of the field work and to study the responses of this beach by numerical simulation, utilizing the topographic and sediment field data and measured wave data. The validation and verification of the numerical model was performed by RTK-GPS measurements and satellite images.

Abstract:
Abstract Context.—Pleural involvement by lymphoma is relatively common. However, there are very few clinicopathologic studies reported in the literature of lymphomas involving the pleura. Objective.—To characterize the clinicopathologic features of lymphomas involving the pleura. Design.—We reviewed the clinicopathologic features of 34 patients with lymphoma involving the pleura proven by biopsy and classified these neoplasms using the World Health Organization classification. Results.—There were 22 men and 12 women, with an average age of 62 years (range, 22–82 years). Nine (26.5%) patients had pleural involvement as the only site of disease, 22 (64.7%) had other sites of involvement, and 3 (8.8%) had inadequate staging data. Eighteen (56.2%) of 32 patients with adequate clinical data had a history of lymphoma (including 3 patients with pleural involvement as the only disease site). In 29 (85.3%) cases, a specific diagnosis according to the World Health Organization classification could be made: 17 (58.6%) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 5 (17.2%) follicular lymphoma (including a case with areas of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma), 2 (6.9%) small lymphocytic lymphomas/chronic lymphocytic leukemia, 2 (6.9%) precursor T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia, 1 (3.4%) mantle cell lymphoma, 1 (3.4%) posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder, and 1 (3.4%) classical Hodgkin lymphoma. The other 5 cases were B-cell lymphomas that could not be further classified. Cytologic examination of pleural fluid was performed in 15 cases and was positive for lymphoma in 8 (53.3%) cases. Conclusions.—Most patients with lymphoma involving the pleura have simultaneous evidence of systemic involvement. The most frequent type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, followed by follicular lymphoma. Cytologic examination can have negative results in patients with pleural involvement by lymphoma.

Abstract:
River inlets along the Tamil Nadu coast remain mostly closed due to negligible fresh water flow and also due to various structures constructed near to the river inlet obstructing natural sediment transport. Excessive development of the sand spit also causes serious problems such as water level rise during floods and difficulty in navigation through river mouth. To reduce the impact of coastal area flooding and easy navigation it is necessary to keep the river mouth open. River training walls (RTW) are generally constructed to keep the river mouth open. Depending upon the sediment transport direction, sediments get deposited on one side of the RTW, while depleting the sediments from the other side. To prevent the sediment deposit from spilling over to river mouth, it is ideal to bypass the sand to the other side of the river mouth. This study analyses the methodologies for sand bypassing. A numerical model study has been carried out using DHI LITPACK to evaluate the sedimentation. The procedure of sand bypassing using pumps and pipe lines are discussed. Volume of sand bypassed, pump capacity, the number of Booster pumps to maintain critical velocity etc. can be determined based on the procedure discussed

Abstract:
The Danish west coast presents a continue evolution because of its hydrodynamic and geomorphological conditions. The main topic of the following thesis is to analyse and understand the erosion causes in Nørlev Strand, a small village in the North-West coast of Denmark, close to the most famous Lønstrup in the Hjørring Kommune. LITPACK is the software package used as support of the study: LITDRIFT is used understand the erosion (causes and magnitude), LITLINE to simulate the yearly shore-line tendency, LITPROF to see how change the cross-shore profile in case of storm and after, restoring a “normal” condition. Finallly, a solution to erosion is proposed based on local citizens (low visual impact and cost) and Danish Coastal Authority will (the body responsible giving permissions to any changes on the coast).

Abstract:
In order to understand and predict geomorphologic evolutions in coastal seas and estuaries a model is needed which describes the dynamics of the water motion, sediment movement and the evolution of erodible boundaries (like the bottom). The latter two modules require quantitative information about erosion, deposition and transport of sediment. The structures are constructed to the long one of the coast for some purposes and cause modifications in the natural environment with change of the circumstantial shoreline. The conception of the port of PecÃm required of the government to study and to hinder the possible alterations of the coast line next to the constructed structures. Then, through numerical simulation, using modern software, MIKE21 and LITPACK, it was studied and one foreseen the behavior of the shoreline in the ten following years to the beginning of the construction, 1996. This work intends to verify the reality of that forecast. The results for the dynamics of the shoreline of the region of the port of PecÃm had been gotten through comparisons of its evolution since the initial moment of the construction that terminal port, showing, thus, the transformations caused by the transport of the sediment in two periods of study, before and after the construction of the provisory docking, and to compare with the results determined for the numerical simulations of software, MIKE21 and of LITPACK
