Full textR. De Kremer's litecherary output was in two languages : French and Dutch, and under two names : Jean Ray and John Flanders. This ontological duality is emphasized by a dual situation of periphery : the way, as a bilingual Belgian, he looks at the neighbouring centers : Paris and Amsterdam. So much so that with that distinctly national output, it is possible to section a century of Belgian literatures according to their receptions and codifications. Around the paratopy of Ray / Flanders and from the Belgian sending system, there is an opening on the main receiving systems. Reception lays the foundations for a national and generic imprisonment. From there, R. De Kremer's approach in his works is not only to consider literature as an institution, but the institution in literature, and not only to see his works as second-rate literature, according to popular and exarcerbated aspect, but to see the dynamic movement of writing beneath literature

Full textPublished in volumes between 1894 and 1917 by the former bookshop Furne, Paul d’Ivoi’s "Voyages Excentriques" made up a collection which was very much valued by the youth of the Edwardian Era.These adventure novels, in the tradition of Jules Verne, were highly representative of their time with plots deeply rooted in the political ideas pervading then. They were anxious to contribute to the patriotic and moral moulding of their readers and applied to support the colonial work of France while promoting the values of the French Republic and celebrating its influence all over the world. The action, which often deals with international diplomatic stakes, sends the characters abroad to meet other nationalities whose visions reflect their relationships with France, whether friendly or of conflict.However the "Voyages Excentriques" swing from reality into fiction using the various means that adventure novels, then at their peak, offered them. Exotism and scientific extravagance are the main themes, often accompanied with detective stories or spy fiction as secondary sorts. When writing his adventure novels, Paul d’Ivoi carefully paid attention to differentiating himself from his predecessors, asserting his own manner by inventing wonderful scientific gadgets or giving a preponderant role to women. His books were a great success at the turn of the 20th century as New Year’s gifts, school prizes, popular manuals or cheap serials which were adapted on stage or even in movies.He is most original in his dealing with eccentricity which is to be found all through his collection of Belle Epoque novels

Full textThis comparative research project is devoted to the study of the system of metaphors for the Medieval cathedral in French and Russian literatures of the XIXth and XXth centuries. The classical metaphors of cathedral as book, cathedral as living being and cathedral as vegetable organism are at the core of the present work. The actual and physical cathedral progressively dematerializes and turns into a mysterious cathedral engulfed in water or into a precarious cathedral of mist. Rehabilitated and valorized by the Romantics, the Medieval building itself starts acting as a model for comparison, entailing a complete reversal of metaphors. A symbol of the holy and a place of worship, the religious building gets completely metamorphisized by the writers' pen. The amazing diversity of literary representations of the cathedral strike and touch by their sheer beauty as a real kaleideoscope of images, surprising the reader by their originality and depth

Full textThis study aims at defining Sartre's literary criticism. It divies it into tow main trends : an judgmental criticism, corresponding to the articles of SituationsI (1947), and a biographical criticism, which includes the whole of his critical books, that is, Baudelaire (1947), Saint Genet comédien et martyr (1952), and his study on Flaubert, entitled L'Idiot de la famille (1971-72). The whole range of articles published by Sartre in the 1930s shows a criticism where his approach to the different novelistts he deals withe is guided by his literary and philosophical ideas. The second period is characterised by an application of existential psychoanalysis as a literary approch. The latter shows us Baudelaire's poetry as an expression of failure, Genet's literature as an expression of revolt, and a Flaubert's biography as a " true novel ". Thus, Sartre's criticism proves to be tied to his philosophical thinking : the first period reflects the influence of phenomenology; the second, that of existential psychoanalysis. A comparaison between Sartre's criticism and Lanson's method of literary history shows the former as partisan of subjectivity and hostile to objectivity
