Full textThe objective of this study is to shed the light into the image of Black people of Brazil, in particular through the voices of the literary criticism. This thesis, dealing with the image of Afro-Brazilians through the literary criticism, relies on the hypothesis that the literary criticism is always subjective. We focus our analyses in two theoretical bases, the sociology of the literature and the post-colonials theories. We build a modelization that reflects the importance of these methods in the study of minorities in the literary field. The literary criticism bring a new light on the knowledge of Black Brazilian people, either character or author. The literary criticism had an important development during the twentieth century. Its evolution permit to understand the literary institutions as a system and also to analyse its speech concerning the ethnic questions. Our duty is to compare the literature and the Brazilian society, and so, to show how Black people appear in Brazil, we read constantly the texts of our body of texts to see the tension between the idea ant the image, between the center of an intellectual thought and the snare of the representation of the images

Full textThe presence and importance of the French literature in Brazilian Art and the literature in the first half of the 20th century – at the very moment of the affirmation of its modernity – have been established. Based on a review of French translations and a reading of numerous artists’ and writers’ correspondence, as well as the "Brazilian texts" of Blaise Cendrars, Benjamin Péret and Georges Bernanos, our work is to identify traces of this influence in France and within the French literary production itself. To do this, we propose to play with the variety of meanings of the notion of resonance to diversify the approaches to the literary text, bringing into dialogue political and cultural History, History of art and literature, but also literary criticism, study of translation and stylistics. We’ll consider that a work resonates – through translation or criticism – or that a name resonates - in a literary work or in the press. We’ll distinguish resonances within libraries, corpus, books, texts, lists; but also echo chambers to figure the literary, editorial or political field or even a cultural or linguistic area. Eventually, we’ll study resonances between different types of discourse (literary, historical, political, legal), between texts, images, languages. In short, using the case of the Franco-Brazilian literary exchanges as a starting point, the aim is to take a fresh look at the unwillingness of the French literature to what is foreign to it

Full textAna Cristina Cesar (Rio de Janeiro, 1952-1983) made of her poetical work a crossroad of modern and contemporary literature by quoting, diverting, translating, imitating, in a more or less clandestine way, her favourite authors of Lusophone, English, French or Spanish expression: W. Whitman, E. Dickinson, K. Mansfield, T. S. Eliot, R. Lowell (following the steps of his Imitations), C. Baudelaire, S. Mallarmé, H. Michaux, Manuel Bandeira, Mário de Andrade, Jorge de Lima, Octavio Paz… This study aims at analysing the modalities of these intertextual encounters, notably by an examination of her readings and manuscripts. Nonetheless, far beyond these statements, her sharp interest for translation and interlinguistic puns, as is testified by her activity as a translator and her Master of Arts in literary translation obtained in 1980 at the University of Essex (United Kingdom), allows us to problematize the convergences and divergences operating in the processes of reading and writing, hermeneutics and creation. These forms of secondary writing bring about effects of cultural and poetical transfers, mechanisms of repetition and difference, metonymic shifts in meaning. Thus, some of the problematics at the core of poetical modernity re-emerge in a very singular manner: the defining of the lyric subject, the dialogical relationship to the reader, the link between body and signifier. This study of comparative poetry casts a light on a very peculiar moment in Brazilian poetry, which seems here to emancipate itself from a sort of postcolonial complex

Full textThis research investigates the relation between Fiction, History and Identity in the literary universe of Márcio Souza, contemporary Brazilian writer born in the Amazonian region. The present thesis aims at shading light over the dialogue established between his work and the different points of view which “invented” Amazonia through time. The first part analyses the representations of Amazonia in travelers’ and explorers’ discourse and their critical incorporation into fiction. It contextualizes Márcio Souza’s fictional universe. The second part aims at characterizing the writer’s intellectual and literary profile, taking into consideration five novels which are the object of this research and which stage two key periods for the formation of Brazilian nation and for regional Amazonian history: the incorporation of the state of Acre and the Cabanagem Revolt. The literary analysis of the trilogy of novels Crônicas do Grão-Pará e Rio Negro emphasizes the role of the committed intellectual who calls into question the negative and biased representation of this rebellion which, in the 19th century, ravaged the Province of Grão-Pará and Rio Negro, in the Northern Region of Brazil. The analysis of this trilogy exposes the narrative strategies as well as the ideological posture of an author who revisits the onset of the Empire of Brazil and the history of the formation of Brazilian nation, integrating the point of view of a humiliated people, stricken by fierce repression. The desire to fight against oblivion constitutes a strong axis in the writer’s work of memory. This research stresses the importance of the reflection which emanates from Márcio Souza’s work to understand Amazonia’s history and its ascribed place in contemporary Brazil
A segunda parte procura caracterizar o perfil intelectual e literário do escritior, igualmente ensaista, dramaturgo e romancista.

Full textDuring the end of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth, the city of Rio de Janeiro went through a series of socio-economic changes related to the process of the implementation of modernity and the consolidation of capitalism in Brazil. In this moment, local authorities, along with the elite of the country, created a modernization project whose goal was to eliminate the remaining aspects of the colonial period still present in the city, making it more similar to European capitals through urban reforms. These modifications expressed the desire for progress and civilization from the dominant Brazilian classes while also attempted to follow the example and the rhythm of social, cultural and economic development of Europe. In this context, the authorities from Rio de Janeiro imposed a transformation of habits and popular traditions with the purpose of ending the old customs from the colonial past and the elements of the popular culture that were considered primitive and barbaric. It was in this moment of great changes that Paulo Barreto wrote his work and created several characters. In his texts, he documented and pondered on the urbanization process and the transformations executed to the city of Rio de Janeiro, paying special attention to the alterations that this process caused to the population and its customs, interactions and sociability. Barreto‘s work reflects the impositions of a government concerned with the idea of civilizing the city and the life of its inhabitants in contrast with the reality of the daily life of that population. Through a close observation of the city in all its spheres and its quotidian life, he constructed relevant interpretations about the dynamics and the characteristics of modern life, as well as different representations of modernity. In this sense, this present research intends to analyse the representations of modernity constructed by Paulo Barreto throughout this work
Thesis, Rennes 2, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014REN20027.
Full textThe current research studies the question of identity –in its collective and individual dimension– through theanalysis of the representation of family in the three first novels written by Milton Hatoum: Tale of a certain Orient (1989), The Brothers (2000) and Ashes of the Amazon (2005). Through these works, we discover the intimacy of memory and the family novel by exploring the identity relationships and the processes of construction and deconstruction of identity. Their central theme is composed by several representative criteria of identity such as language, religion, symbolic space and even the recovery of past through memory. Furthermore, topics such as revenge, incest, love, jealousy or passion are intertwined in the quest for identity and reconstructed through the memory of the narrators. The aim of this study is to examine the identity processes and to determine their mostsignificant topics. This study seeks to prove that the family relationships depicted by the author can serve as a basefor examining identity paradigms and can also reveal the interrelations between the individual (family) and society. Thus, the origins and the destiny of Brazil can be examined from a point of view anchored in the cultural and historical specificities of the Amazon region, which this study intends to explore

Thesis, Rennes 2, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014REN20058/document.
Full textThis research aims to analyze the figurations of alterity, taking into account the process of identitarian (re)construction of the characters and their relation to cultural memory, based on the reading of four Moacyr Scliar’s novels: Os Deuses de Raquel (1975); O centauro no jardim (1980); A estranha nação de Rafael Mendes (1983); e, Na noite do ventre, o diamante (2005). The relations between literature, identity and alterity are central to the contemporary debate. In contemporary Brazilian literature, authors from different ethnicities work systematically with the issues of immigration, of alterity and cultural memory. For, although the contribution of immigrants to the formation of our society has been extremely important, these elements were being represented in a shy mode, or even, homogenized, both in Brazilian literature and history. Moacyr Scliar is an author of Jewish origin who works extensively with issues related to identity, diversity and minorities. Scliar, himself, says that it "gives voice to those who do not have it, making their stories to the official version of history that misrepresents them or is pasteurized". This way, the author, through social thematic approach, opens space for reflection on alterity. Thus, the study of “figuration of alterity”, present in the romances analyzed in this research, becomes necessary since in these works the characters are always in a position, as Linda Hutcheon would say, of “ex-centric”, “marginalized”, "peripheral figures of fictional history," this is, they are always “the other”, “the different”. Those chosen texts question the interrelations and cultural conflicts through the figure of the "immigrant" character who is on the borderline "between two worlds" and that often struggles to integrate itself, ceasing, thus, to be "the other. "
Thesis, Rennes 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019REN20032.
Full textThe study aims to understand the dynamism of cordel literature both in terms of its production transmission ; its partnerships with the country's cultural institutions since the turn of the twenty-first century. It takes the party to study this movement from the Nordeste migration phenomenon that marked the twentieth century and continues to lesser extent, to pour the twenty-first century to the city of Sao Paulo. In order to accomplish such study, a literary analysis of six folhetos written between 1977 and 2013 by poets who migrated to São Paulo was undertook, and the poetic narratives by their testimony and that of professional partners of the cordel literature through the use of the oral history method was completed. It is an interdisciplinary study that, on the one hand, explores the figure and the creative narrative of the poet-migrant, Being in the poetics of the inter, marked by the physical displacement that crosses trans-border imaginary territories. On the other hand, it studies the historicity of the cordel literature of the last thirty years in the light of the phenomena of postmodernity - acceleration and increase of exchanges, globalization, new means, places, forms of expression and conception of identity - through narratives of memory and representations contained in both folhetos and oral history interviews. Thus, we discover that folheto, the support of a metalanguage, can itself be the bearer of an identity project elaborated and transmitted by poets since the beginning of the 21st century

Full textThis is a study of the works of Moacyr Scliar and Régine Robin. The writing of Moacyr Scliar mainly focuses on the issue of Jewish immigration to Brazil and on the adaptation and integration into the Brazilian society. He constructs with humor and lightness characters that are often living internal conflicts, trying to constitute themselves an identity composed of traces of memories and the new reality which surrounds them. It is the case of the characters of his works that integrate my corpus, namely, the Centaur in the garden and His majesty of the Indians. The writings of the Quebec-French Régine Robin include several areas of knowledge and follow a trend or a movement of writers in Quebec who favor in their writings an idea of national construction that does not have the country as the center, but rather an identity approach which strengthens and signals the wide cultural and ethnic diversity that makes up Quebec. This is what they call the migrant writing. Our interest mainly focuses on his literary production, namely the novel La Québécoite and his storybook The immense fatigue of Stones. However, her production as a theorist provides complementary elements for the analysis of his literary works, such as The Memory Novel, Kafka, and The Saturated Memory. Régine Robin and Moacyr Scliar have in common the fact of creating in their books an intermediate space between facts and fiction, and also to present expressions of the American community of Jewish origin. In this way, are intertwined in their works a national dimension, a regional dimension and a transnational community dimension

Full textAs Karl Marx summarized, the colonized "cannot represent themselves; they must berepresented.” The Natives of Brazil have always held a special place in Brazilianliterature. Since the 80s, they have become the subject of their works. From Metade Cara, Metade Máscara Eliane Potiguara (2004); Falling from the sky.Words of a Yanomami shaman co-written by the shaman Davi Kopenawa andanthropologist Bruce Albert (2010) and Geografia indígena jointly by teachers intraining from Parque Indígena do Xingu (1995), we address the issue of indigenous and Brazilian identity, questioning the legitimacy and the validity of the description "indigenous literature". From these diverse publications emerge enlightening reflections on the notion of identity, notably when crossed with the challenge of authorship. The adoption of alphabetic writing by the Natives of Brazil allows the appropriation of a portrait subject to scrutiny from others, thus a return to Western and Brazilian writings. Moreover, indigenous literature brings a different view of history dealt with from a perspective of "Western super subjects" (Saïd, 2000). Drawing upon post-colonialtheories, we show that Native literature is revolutionary because it offers an eccentric viewing angle (Bhabha, 1994) extending the European concept of historiography (Mignolo, 2003) based on the multiplicity of the voices of the various (Glissant, 1981) in particular based on orality

To do this, I study the corpus published by the structure, a bilingual short story collection and two novels translated from Brazilian: "t.", "Dame de Nuit" by Manoela Sawitzki and "L'odeur du siphon" by Lourenço Mutarelli. In an analysis of cultural transfer, as a starting language, I question the starting society and the unavoidable contemporary phenomena present in the texts published or being published by Tupi or not Tupi éditions, such as the normative society, state violence, religious obscurantism, necropolitics, with a view to understanding current Brazilian society. Guided by gender studies, this research questions the place occupied by women in the recent history of what I would call "the Tupi or not Tupi society", in other words, the recent history of resistance to the norms of a patriarchal, colonialist, neoliberal society, where freedom and democracy are still the draft of a draft

Full textThe theme of this research is the reception of Jorge Amado’s work in France and aims to analyse this reception from the study of the Amadian critical fortune produced by readers, intellectuals, publishers and artists in France. All these texts are regarded as revealing the dynamics of diffusion and reception, since the first work published in France to date. Thus, alongside the qualitative methodology, of a bibliographic character, the real and symbolic exchanges catalyzing the debates on the French imaginary on Brazilian identity and culture are problematized. To do this, it is not only the responses to the reception of the texts of the Bahianian writer translated and published in the country that are examined, but also the entire network that surrounds them: editions of first and fourth covers, “the entour” of books, prefaces, as well as audio-visual broadcasts
Full textThis thesis intends to investigate the creation of homoerotic subjectivities in Caio Fernando Abreu’s literary work from a narrative and discursive point of view. In order to do so, it analyses his short stories, chronicles and novels produced between the 1970s and 1996, year of his death. His personal correspondence is also examined as a counterpoint to his fictional narratives. Caio Fernando Abreu is a Brazilian contemporary author who has written frequently on the issue of homoerotism, a subject that is, at the same time, essential and secondary to his work. He was also one of the first Brazilian fiction writers to thematize AIDS at a time when the syndrome was directly associated to sexualities that challenged heteronormativity. Subjects are constituted in language and by language, therefore the stigmatization of homoerotically inclined subjects is also necessarily established through language, which is the primary raw material of literature. From this perspective, this work identifies three literary strategies the writer uses in order to escape this discursive trap: ambiguity, displacement and disclosure. Instead of assuming a marginalized sexual identity, his stories and characters defy monolithic categorizations and instead they adopt the notion of fluid, plural and interchangeable sexualities. This study also discusses the aesthetic and ethical dimensions in Abreu’s work as well as literature’s contribution to positively represent non-hegemonic sexualities

Full textThe term "anthology" covers a collection of different literary practices dating back to antiquity. Around the 18th century in Europe, more precise and recurring structures emerged in modern literary anthologies that allowed them to be considered as a genre: they became profitable cultural products that combined literary, historical and national discourses. This diachronic study of literary anthologies in Brazil in the 19th century investigates the European, and specifically Portuguese, origins of literary collections in order to understand the first manifestations of the phenomenon in Brazil in the context of the acceleration of the transatlantic movement of people, prints and ideas that was characteristic of this period. From its first steps in Brazil, the anthology genre has proven to be varied and dynamic. The category of national parnasos, mosaicos, florilègios, harmonias and liras, which most often attract the attention of critics, is neither homogeneous nor isolated. Within the emerging literary system, booksellers' catalogs and newspaper advertisements are full of compilations aimed at the moral education of youth and the entertainment of families, mainly through short stories. We also find the presence of various thematic, contemporary, programmatic and also regional poetic collections, whose circulation is not negligible despite the limits imposed on literary practices at the time. This context, already visible in the middle of the century, will continue to increase in terms of diversification and volume towards the end of the 19th century and throughout the following one
Full textAt the end of the 1980s, a new era of democracy began in Latin America, after the downfall of military regimes. But there were other changes besides the consequences of this democratic renewal, such as the beginning of neoliberal policies and the mondialization of culture. Thus, in response to these new paradigms, a debate was triggered by the infringements on human rights, which was both legislative and ethical. This facilitated the discussion of other subjects, such as divorce and homosexuality. This research studies the changes in the representation of male homosexuality in the works of the writers of the mcondo generation, as well as the writing strategies they adopted, from a literary, psychoanalytic, and sociological perspective. For chronological reasons as well as literary significance, the corpus studied is exclusively composed of argentinian, chilean and peruvian authors

Full textOver a period stretching from 1894 to 2004, French utopian literature - which in that period gradually incorporated science fiction - stands out as a medium and a creator of collective imagination and of literary representations in the social and political fields. If one goes beyond the complex hierarchical relationships that developed throughout the twentieth century between French and US or anglo-saxon science fiction, it is then possible to point out the epistemological stakes in this literature. In so doing, literature yields a new form of knowledge. Furthermore, choosing to read a corpus of French novels on the cross disciplinary theme of “society and power” with a socio-critical approach has made it possible to establish a history of literary social representations through their own creative dynamics. According to Henri Desroches, the three dynamic creative movements of the period under study are: changeover, confrontation and alternative. At the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, the aim of the changeover utopian literary movement is to change society which is perceived as obsolete by a number of pro-socialist or pro-anarchist writers. On the contrary, the confrontation movement which finds its full momentum after the first world war is a process of critical and satirical creation. However, , the 1970’s are characterized by a revival of utopian literature in its alternative dimension. Without giving up their critical vigil on post modern society, writers of utopian literature and science fiction assert their potential of invention in the void left by ideologies and the so-called ”fin de l’histoire”

Full textThe post-realist fiction deviates from three conditions of realism : (1) causal homogeneity and (2) coreferential relation between the fictional world and the real world, (3) narrative reliability assured by modal distinction between the actual and the non-actual in fiction. The deviation from (1) yields the fantastic, the magical realism without hesitation, and the historiographic metafiction rewriting the history. The second is violated by the absence or the intentionally wrong usage of proper nouns, and the imaginary geography. Metafiction violates the third by plays of actual and non-actual. To complete Todorov's model and to analyse varied examples, we think over again the narratology based on linguistic models by referring to the modal logic that enables us to treat "questions considered heretic by orthodox structuralism" (M. -L. Ryan) and to propose a global model covering realism, absurd and metafiction

Full textFrom the perspective of a notion of “transfer”, this article proposes the analysis of the process of fictionalization of journalistic writing from the adoption of literary techniques. This process, which highlights the porosity of fiction and reality, is claimed by literary journalism, a hybrid modality situated between journalism and literature. Relying on factual and literariness, journalistic-literary writing is characterized, on the one hand, by its adherence to the truth and its search for reality and, on the other hand, by its vital need to narrate. In order to show how fiction and non-fiction are related within the text linked to this journalistic category, we are interested in the work of two journalist-writers who devoted their careers to the production of chronicle and reportage, representative genres of journalism literature in the context of the 20th century Brazilian press. Rubem Braga and Joel Silveira were not only the precursors of literary journalism in Brazil, they were also guarantors of this modality – especially during their work as war correspondents in the service of the newspapers Diário Carioca and Diários Associados. With their writing skills, they inscribed in the pages of these newspapers a poetics of everyday life based on a journalistic and literary approach. During the coverage of the Second World War, the chronicler Braga and the reporter Silveira showed, in their perspective, the ugliness of the war without neglecting the poetry of the facts. Practicing trench journalism, they witnessed the strength of literary journalism on the front and defended, in the writing and publication of their texts as books, the fight for perpetuity claimed by this journalistic aspect. In this research, we adopted as a corpus analysis the collections of chronicles and reports published in the books Crônicas de Guerra (Braga, 1964) and O Inverno da Guerra (Silveira, 2005), which are manifestations of the perennial writing of both authors

Full textSince the seventies, Georges Lemoine's work has become noteworthy because of the modern way in which he illustrates great literary texts (Le Clézio, Bosco, Tournier, Yourcenar, Roy, Wilde, Andersen, etc. ). The aim of this thesis is to show how these illustrations develop together with the texts and to show what graphic requirements are needed in the creation of the pictures. This thesis will therefore place the illustrator within the French publishing world, and then analyse the specific requirements for book illustration. It will also look at the various steps needed in the genesis of a picture, question Georges Lemoine's interpretation, and focus on the semantic levels on which the pictures have an influence. Finally, this thesis will point out the illustrator's thematic preferences and the peculiarities of his style, which are developed around the symbolic and allegorical levels of his chosen texts. This research is based on Georges Lemoine's whole repertoire of illustrations and on a large amount of private archives. Several questions arise: what does illustrating a literary text involve? Can the illustration become some form of literature in itself? What are the relationships between text and images?

Full text"Depressions of Travel : Rewriting the Elsewhere, from Michaux to Chevillard" is a literary analysis of the “fin des voyages” (Lévi-Strauss, 1955), a phrase taken here to describe an impasse affecting travel writing. In the modern age, the genre has become increasingly aware of its incapacity to render the Elsewhere. Reading Freud and Sartre, Chapter I frames the problem in terms of a crisis of the narrative function. The second chapter declines the specular character of the exotic impasse, in writings by Sartre and Jean-Philippe Toussaint. Chapter III reflects on fictional world tours (Verne, Perec, Rolin) that expose the phantasms and paradoxes of a modern “pensée du monde”. Chapter IV rethinks translation as a constitutive and problematic modality of the travel genre, in novels by Toussaint and Vassilis Alexakis. Via Montaigne, Lévi-Strauss and Derrida, the following chapter describes the subversive function of the animal in travel narratives by Michaux and Éric Chevillard. The final chapter reflects, through works by Perec and Nicolas Bouvier, on sites of discontinuity that disrupt the spatial imaginary

Full textStarting from a definition of terms such as reality, fiction, imagination and realism, this study analyzes the birth of the realistic esthetical current in 19th century Europe (France and Portugal) and its introduction in Brazil. The process of “reconstruction of reality through fiction” is examined in the description of drought, a climatic phenomenon that regularly devastates the Nordeste region of Brazil, as it is represented from the novel O Sertanejo (1875), by J. De Alencar, to Luzia-homem (1903), by D. Olímpio. The major part of this study is devoted to the works of J. Do Patrocínio, Os Retirantes (1879) and of R. Teófilo, A Fome (1890), which describe the “big drought” in Ceará (1877-1879). By presenting wide literary panoramas, these works contribute to the definition of an image of drought in which the retirante is a central figure. Afterwards, the theme of drought is no longer a central subject in novels, but illustrates or defines the regional background of the narration, as in Dona Guidinha do poço (1891), by Oliveira Paiva, and Luzia-homem

Full textTommaso Landolfi who is a contemporary writer (1908-1979) often talks about his fear of the real world. Can that reality be dreaded through the words it is closely linked to and which may act as protective screens and transmitting agents at the same time ? It is the great question that has been bothering literature since Plato and Aristote that is to say : its ability to represent reality. Landolfi has set up that particular question in his novels and short stories, especially. His position is still ambiguous, between realism and imaginary, illusion and desperate clearness. The virtuosity of his style and the abandon to fate intertwining endlessly form the shape of his narrative work. According to him, literature is mainly inappropriate. In the meantime, the writer can't accept this unability about the connection to reality. He tries to investigate in an often archaic but deeply original language, all modalities of representation from a weary realism to fantasy

Full textThe methodological and theoretician difficulty to establish a single criterion that intend to explain exactly the fantastic literature, does not try to delimit neither to give a unique reading, this would be contradicting the gender itself. Exactly the notion of the unknown, the strange, and the unusual is what constitutes the base of the modern fantastic gender. The relevance of a study specialized in the Mexican fantastic story is based on the following argument: in the Mexican literature what has dominated is the realistic speech and the literary critical studies have concentrated on the reflection of elements of the narrative since this realistic perspective. We selected fourteen Mexican authors of the 20th century due to the substantially fantastic elements on some of their short story work. Of each narrator we selected at least one story grouping them according to the themes and motives shared

Full textThis study concerns all the texts published in the parisian "literary" press from 1944 to 1960 and relating to belgium, focusing on french-written and dutch-written literary productions. By considering them products of discursive practices, the study aims to detect the principles of organization and classification of belgian productions in relation to french productions, which leads one to question the social use of literature in both france and belgium. The theory of fields contributes to ap- prehend in an appropriate way the practices under study. The analyzed texts are "prises de position" mediating certain principles peculiar to the literary field and to the field of "literary" press. First, the three weeklies are located in the latter. Then, each forms the subject of an analysis focusing on general texts on (an aspect of) belgium, then on (meta)texts taken from literary columns, taking into account the recognition of (national) specificities, the editorial programme and the genders. Finally, the discourses of belgian contributors are studied with respect to their trajectories and to the logics of the french fields involved. The entire corpus is marked by the dominated status of the belgian francophone "literature". The french texts are codetermined by a universalist and humanist vision on (french) culture, peculiar to french fields. Each weekly's position brings about aesthetical and political divergences. The belgian contributors deny or avoid bringing out an own identity

Zamacois), this study proposes to examine the birth, rise and decline of a movement in popular literature in Spain between 1894 and 1936 in relation to the new publishing deal, French literary influences and the centres of interest of the Spanish reading public of the time. The first part includes a presentation of the authors (through their biographies) and the magazines and publishing houses that brought out their writings. This panorama of Spain’s publishing world is supplemented with a survey of the circulation of these works abroad - essentially in France as well as the cinema adaptation of some of them. There follows a chapter entitled ' the book as an object ', which deals with the elements directly peripheral to the text - titles, covers, jacket flaps, back covers, illustrations, advertisement etc. Secondly, the analysis bears upon the contents of these works through a study of themes and characters, bringing to the fore the recurrent and permanent features in the writing of those pages together with their French literary inspiration. Their close links with the concerns of contemporary readers - among which the questioning about sexuality and the position of women in society hold a dominating place - is also examined

First we have tried to find a definition for the words assimilation-loss of the original culture- and jew -any person that considers herself jewish or is considered by the others as jewish; then we explain the choice of our study period. Then we talk about the different waves of immigration which brought the jews to the unites states, the Sepaharades first in the 17th century, then the first wave of the Askhenazes coming from Germany in the 18th century and finally the jews from eastern Europe at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th for economical, social and political reasons. Then we explain why we chose novels written in english by jewish authors and we find out the common caracteristics of those novels-language, setting, family and society. We are then able to find five principal ways through which the jews thought it would be possible for then to assimilate and we define them as social ascencion via financial success, education, mariage, revolt against parents and revolution and we have tried to find out whether total or partial assimilation had been achieved this way

Its aim is to understand how the European literature influenced Cucchi’s poetical work and how the intertextual criticism has been received by the Italian poet for his own writing. As a result, the thesis underlines the existence of three types of literary references: direct or meta quotations and shared atmospheres with some authors who have been considered essential for Cucchi’s literary formation. These references make Cucchi’s work open to European and universal literature as well as to contemporaneity

Full textLiterary criticism of the 20th century is characterized by its radical development but ill-defined nature. Under the title “From Language to Silence”, the aim of our studies is to suggest a comprehensive approach of the evolution of literary criticism of our time. Literary texts whether they use the Formalistic or Structuralistic analysis are no longer based on non-linguistic, or in other words historical and social considerations. By assimilating Saussure's linguistic method, literary works since then have been analyzed as a language, a grammatical phrase or even a system of signs. In the last thirty years, however, some of the critics have questioned the referential capability of language as well as the applications of the linguistic method to literary studies. In the light of the concept of silence, we propose to define three different orientations in literary criticism. The first notion we propose is “Absolute Silence”. It designates a critical perspective of counter-interpretation, which refuses all the excessive interpretative practice stimulated by the linguistic and semantic methods, and sheds light on the “non-interpretative” nature of artwork. The second notion “Noisy Silence” is in the realm of metafiction. Being a paradoxical narrative form – both creative and critical writing –, metafiction is its own object of criticism. Lastly, we look at the so-called “Expressive Silence” which sees the “body” as the analytical object of literary studies. The emphasis of the referential function of our silent body draws attention to the excess of language and makes the expression of the unexpressable possible at last

The ambivalent functions which have defined for long the specific novel style for young people, i. E. To untertain and to educate, are questioned nowadays. The writers are anxious to get away from a too simplistic reading agreement and to commit themselves to a wider social and artistic search concerning a larger audience. Starting from the two main objectives which however persist unsaid ( and which corresponde to the srong expectations of those who publish and prescribe). The thesis studies how the authors modify the rules of this style for young through subtle compromises and determined transgressions in order to make their own voice heard. .

Full textThis thesis is about the background and minor Cajun characters that are to be found in the anglophone Twentieth-Century American novels. Are they mere words without any connection to the real Louisiana ? Or do they represent, through the prism of their fictionnal Louisiana where they act, something about the real Cajuns (as a community), or, at least, about the way these people are considered by the following writers : William Faulkner, Ernest John Gaines, James Lee Burke, Tim Gautreaux and Walker Percy ? We devote the first part of the thesis to the theory of character and consider that the second option is the more convenient. In the second part, we analyse the manifestation of characters as agents, " actants ", performers, and to what extent they are part of the narration. The third part leads us to consider how they contribute to the reader's perception of the frontiers, distance, expanse and referential density of the fictive Louisianas they inhabit, according the Vincent Jouve's theory. In the end, we analyse the values they carry, either in the texts' intructions or through the characters' talking

Full textMy doctoral dissertation studies the problem of cosmopolitanism in French literature in the years 1890-1950 by relating it to the various manners of conceiving the unity and the diversity of humanity at the time. Cosmopolitanism was often linked to the notion of decadence, many authors holding it responsible for cultural uniformization and for the decline of national identities. To many writers of the period, insisting on diversity by constructing strong differences between nations was a way of criticizing modernity, which they deemed both absurd and chaotic. However, the relationship between nationalism and cosmopolitanism was far more complex and the latter often became a component of patriotic discourses. Indeed, French identity was frequently built on the theme of unity within diversity. This ideological construction was aimed at explaining France’s alleged extraordinary openness to the world, that is to say France’s unique ability to welcome and assimilate foreign influences without losing its own cultural personality. Even those who advocated internationalist or universalistic ideologies also emphasized the importance of cultural diversity. In many attempts to reorganize the world, such as Marguerite Yourcenar’s Mémoires d’Hadrien, published in 1951, cultural differences were used and exploited rather than called into question

Full textInsular vision profoundly impregnates sardinian literature : in novels the island appears as a place that the author needs to relate to and to research, like the epicentre of an imaginary world, at the horizon of all the author's quests and desires. The island is the place where heros live, heros who never determined their history but who have been wounded by it : men (whose beliefs, obsessions and desires we know) profoundly marked by their marginal condition and the uncertainties of their land. "sardity", "sardisme", "sarditude" are direct and specific expressions of sardinia's insularity. They bring the writers of this region to light and are the basis of a literature endowed with its own motivations and autonomous with regard to any system. The sardinian novel's realistic connotation is filtered through the author himself in novels conceived as instruments to perpetuate historical memory, as a way of putting forward the specificity and the problems of the island. The insular representation in this literature is, however, also a way for the novelist to annonce his existential worries, which are characteristic of the sardinian man, and to carry out his insular reconquest whilst perpetrating the values and hence fundamental reality of his land
