Full textSymbolism and African reality in the narrative works of Tchicaya U Tam'si is the title of this thesis. With it we face the task to study the tchicayen symbolism. We shall bring out the stylistic scheme followed by the author and the reality unfolding through his writings. The narrative work of Tchicaya U Tam'si which we present is a tetralogy. The first three novels represent a trilogy with titles taken from the world of animals: Les cancrelats (The cockroaches), Les méduses (The sea-nettles), Les phalènes (The moths) and the fourth novel Ces fruits si doux de l'arbre à pain (These sweet fruits of the baobab), which followed, symbolizes the extension of the trilogy. We define this as a narrative world without reticence showing an affinity to what Barthes called in defining the French novel of the XIXth century "an autarkic universe which creates its own dimensions and limits, disposing here its time, its space, its population, its collection of objects and myths. " to embrace this universe we shall systematically study its genesis, we shall point out the different structures and interconnections and we shall then endeavor a systematization of the tchicaven symbolism. The conclusion will be dedicated to the ambiguity coming to its own in these novels

Full textWhen the African countries were granted their independence in the sixties, the people of Africa had such dreams that they were indeed at the dawn of something new, since they had lived through such oppression, under the rule of those who had colonized them. The opposite, however, took place, because these new leaders who were put into place, saw themselves as monarchs with divine rights and distinguished themselves by all kinds of abuses, which sank these countries and their inhabitants into extreme suffering and tremendous decline never before experienced in history. Today, forty years after this compromised sovereignty, the people wonder about their future and continue their bitter fight against these ominous military regimes with the hopes of regaining their stolen freedom. In the realm of art, the romantic view of Sony Labou Tansi, beyond the globally somber report of actual conditions, is as well a testimony of a surge toward a new temporality, where hope is depicted on the horizon. This writing, then, describes a violence which obeys the argument between tyranny and emancipation; that is, a crossing of paths from which a happy society is born, with its sudden change of mentality. This new society, which is a foundational model, is a model on which one must build

Full textThe present study consists of a comparative study in North American literature in regards to the notion of l'américanité. As we re-read the classic North American novel, we trace the emergence and evolution of l'américanité in the works of authors such as Jack London, Ralph Ellison and Alain Grandbois. The novels of Scott Momaday and D'Arcy McNickle further our comprehension of l'américanité from the Native American perspective. The final chapters look at the myth of wandering in relation to exile and artistic production in the works of Germaine Guèvremont and Gabrielle Roy. Jack Kerouac, given his French Canadian heritage, serves as a constant bridge between the United States and French Canadian novel. Reader and great admirer of Thomas Wolfe, the famous beat generation writer comes to inspire Jacques Poulin with Volkswagen blues. With this thesis we aim to open up new perspectives on old debates, encourage a more balanced view of l'américanité, and challenge what we consider to be a false discourse on the notion of Americanization

Full text“The question of integrating new technologies in language teaching, particularly the integration of the Internet in the teaching of the French as a Foreign Language (FFL), is one of our principal concerns. We wish to show the positive contributions that the Internet is able to have on the FFL and language teaching generally. The creation of teaching and interactive activities on the Internet is an essential part of our project. In the context of the Internet and the teaching of FFL, we will add the literary element and will set up a site which would aim to offer an unlimited access to various literary texts. It is a site which could be used in a class of FFL, in order to teach certain linguistic elements but also to initiate the foreign learners to the literary text. Our principal goal is to show that the literary text, thanks to the Internet, can have its own place in a class of FFL and can be appreciated. ”

Full textThrough our research, the definition of childhood story by Denis Escarpit ideal: "a written text (. . . ) in which an adult writer, by various literary deviees, narrative or writing, tells the story of a child - himself or another - or a slice of the life of a child. " At the root of our thinking and our problems, this assertion Regis Anthony in his book Radiant writers of the Caribbean: "The child provides one more component to what we have called the genesis of a critical anthropology to the French Caribbean. (. . . ). . . The kid says, being a text more or less autobiographical problematic literary novel. " Our work has been to highlight the value and meanings of different stories of West Indian children, by identifying their distinctive features, their nature and their different functions. Problematic and hindered genre, more precisely controversial autobiography still oecupies an ever more important in French literature and literary discourse in thefrench-speaking Caribbean. Fueled by numerous criticisms made in particular by Jean-François Chiantarettc Gaston Pineau and Louis Le Grand - about the historical, sociological and anthropologicalliterature even these stories of childhood that are really narratives or Iife stories written by adult-, this controversy does not spare the infancy narratives of Caribbean writers in French. Ln terrns of Iiterature and psychoanalysis, how a writer can be split and described, in a book he agrees to publish the true story of his privacy, even as he lives? This question is one of Gaston Pineau and Jean-Louis Le Grand, who will not hesitate to express serious reservations about the "historical truth" of these texts

Full textFrench literature outside France is pretty well known, particularly through Aimé Césaire's work. This martinican writer is the most important in the Antilles. Full textThis thesis is divided in two main parts : the study of novelistic patterns and the problems of writing. The first part deals with biographical elements, proving that the chosen authors, nathalie sarraute, mohammed dib, rachid boudjedra, tierno monenembo and sony labou tansi, all felt a desire to break with their original literary style. The composition of the novels, both internally and externally, has been studied in order to prove how the presentation, the introduction and the dedication create a meaningful whole. The division of text (chapters, intertextual references, typography) has also been analysed in terms of its relevance to the novel. The last section of this first part studies the time and space elements within the novel. The second part of this work is focussed on the difficulties presented by writing. The first chapter deals with character study (classification, psychologie and inter-character relationships) and the second chapter deals with the narrator's status (wheter first or third person, etc. ) finally, the third chapter studies the varied uses of the french language through style and above all the reader's responses to this

Full textFar from being static and monotonous, Cameroonian poetry has profoundly changed in the course of the years. From 1920 to 1950, the poets were largely influenced by French classical and romantic authors. They used regular rhythms and rime schemes, wrote alexandrine lines and sonnets, etc. Their favourite topics were love, dream, nature, solitude etc. But the following generation (1950-1960) reacted strongly against that writing style. They adopted a new style, that of the negritude movement : free verse, no regular rhythms, no rime schemes, etc. But their ultimate goal was the liberation of the country as a whole. That is why the content of their works was mainly the fight against colonialism. After independence, the poets notice that both at the social and political levels, nothing has really changed. Misery and oppression are more cruel than ever. Consequently most authors change their target. They forget about colonisation and start shooting at the new political masters, their own brothers. That subversive writing style leads to a fundamental renewal of the poetic language. About the future prospects of that poetry, we can say that subversion will continue to inspire the authors, as long as the government rules the country on the basis of oppression, dictatorship, the violation of liberties and other human rights, which creates or worsens social misery
