Full textLiterature and literary life of czech emigration from 1948 to 1968 have not yet been studied either in czechoslovakia or in western countries. Therefore the first part of the present dissertationanalyzes in first place the general problems of the czech literary emigration from 1948 to 1968 : czech literature in exile compared to national czech literature; composition of the czech literary emigration; its chronological evolution; its purposes; its contacts with a czech audience. The chronology is not "literary" but follows the evolution of the international political situation, from cold war to detente, and consists of the three folllowing parts : formation period (1948-1952); peak period (1953-1956); dialogue period, aiming at influencing the evolution of society in czechoslovakia (1957-1968). Each part successivily presents the political and economic situation in which the emigration developed, its activities; its literary production and its themes, its main journals, organizations and "publishers". The conclusion introduces a comparison between this first wave of czech literary emigration and the second one which was to last from 1968 to the fall of the communist regime in 1989

Full textThis thesis explores the various forms of bilingualism in "modern" bohemian literature, starting with the "national revival" at the end of the 18th century through to 1989. It has been divided into three main periods: 1775-1848 approximately; 1820-1980 approximately; 1948-1989: and shows how bilingualism, beyond its formal value, can be a symbol of the individual as well as the collective identity. Indeed, it is closely related to the changes that can be found in the intellectual life (i. E. The end of the academic diglossia and the repression of bilingualism in literary creation) as well as traditional and innovating poetics (macaronic comedy, the use of interferences "ethnographic and "realistic" literature; the integration of multilingualism in the quest of an "open" art, above all associating literature and plastic arts). Finally, bilingualism reflects the question of identity it was adopted by the writers that approved the double appurtenance (especially the Jewish writers), but was officially banished from the literary republic. Then at became - during the first Czechoslovak republic - a means of protest and even, after the second world war, when language contact has somewhat disappeared, it became a kind of intellectual resistance

Full textIs it possible to speak about « poetics » with respect to a phenomenon which is as fluctuating as exile? May the latter, which, in its various meanings, cannot be totally defined, allow the emergence of a specific language? It is up to us to find out through which mechanisms such a trying expression of interculturalism might lead to the creation of a language which goes beyond the framework of the nation (even when it emanates from the latter) and which reaches out towards transnational and universal invariants and word structures. In order to achieve this, we rely upon three authors which were chosen in different geographic areas and in different periods : Hölderlin (Germanic area), Rimbaud (Latin area) and Sarafian (Armenian area). Exile is primarily defined with respect to the country of origin, in conformity with the definition. But it becomes a linguistic phenomenon, as in the shock with the foreign word after the genocide of the Armenians (Sarafian), or in the formulation of an aesthetic quest with verbal creation at stake (Rimbaud), or in the essential search of a new mythology, along with the confrontation with the foreign world in order to redefine that which belongs specifically to the nation (Hölderlin). Both the geographic exile and the linguistic exile lead to a spiritual exile and to the search for a loftier fatherland. This new spatial entity would result from a hybridization process (or at least from questioning), whereby the word of the exile could be expressed in different formats for the three authors, with, however, some striking similarities

Full textNina Berberova, a Russian poet and prose-writer (1901-1993), had chosen to relate the life of Russian migrants in Paris right from the beginning of her career in her first novel The last and the first (1930). It is also this community that Berberova evokes in the tragicomic stories of Billancourt chronicles (1929-1940). The impact of exile on the individual lies at the core of Berberova's stories and novels (The accompanist; The waiter and the slut; Astachev in Paris ; The empress, the book of happiness). The themes of exile and wandering evolved through the years and became, in to the Memories of Schliemann (1958) and Black pestilence (1959), the ultimate metaphors and conditions of these new migrants. This is where one can see the originality of Berberova as a migrant writer. While she refused to take refuge in the past, she endeavored to give strength and vogor to positive heroes who turned their backs on nostalgia and fruitless doubt. The analysis of her work allows to assess the “young” writer's contribution to 20th century Russian literature. She knew to use exiled people's disarray to turn characters into modernist figures

Full textMany Malagasy French speaking authors live in exile and make their personal experience their topic ; their personal experience represents a cultural itinerary arising from their bilingualism and their will to escape from regimentation due to insularity. Their personal experience provides to their text the achieved work character, combining their will to meet the other and their will to look for themselves, therefore revealing their depths, their inmost being to the universe. Writing is perceived and experienced as a cathartic action probably against self distraction but chiefly against the distraction of the environment which has been submitted, offered and revealed to the author. This purpose may appear utopian, nevertheless it appears essential for the one who foresees literary creation as a sword assailing the weaknesses of reality in order to get closer, foresee and make the characteristics of his ideal world. This creation occurs obviously with the complicity of the author imaginary double, this dark twin [« jumeau sombre »] by which Mr Faulkner refers to the narrator. From all this it emerges a difficulty to live with the other, a coexistence that forewarns a splitting and assimilating phenomena tending to highlight the space and psychology of protagonists: the complexity and dialectic of the character intermixing rebellion and submission, heroism and apathy finally reveals the common itinerary and individual background of the author who decides to draw his romantic inspiration from the decadent reality. In short if the Malagasy French language literature is deeply rooted into Malagasy culture, it also offers a writing allowing to meet and interact with the other and therefore makes the French language an open-minded language

Full textThe present doctoral thesis deals with Nicolai Bokov's work (Moscow, 1945) and its evolution. After the publications in samizdat and under different pen names in the years 1965-1975, his emigration to the West brings up the question of adaptability to a new culture (1975-1982). His conversion to Christianity, combined with a silence in his literary work for thirteen years constitutes a third step in his biography (1982-1999). My work is built upon the model of these three parts of his life and work. Each of the chronological breaks implies a new aesthetic definition and brings about the question of the choice of the specific methodological tools to use. My analysis shows that N. Bokov's work presents permanent features, despite an apparent diversity of themes and genres. Among this features, the author gives importance to autobiography, irony and minimalism, which leads to a certain hermetism. My work aims at taking out an unjustly unknown writer from western cultural stereotypes. It also draws our attention to a generation that has not been studied yet for his literary value and thus opens on new viewpoints in the Slavic studies

Full textSince Ancient Times, thinkers and writers have in large numbers been struck by political exile. In return, this situation has influenced their work and literature as a whole. In the second half of the 20th Century, this literary tradition has been deeply transformed by the surge of totalitarian regimes, and the struggle with democracies which these regimes have provoked. This new political context has induced a large increase of writers in exile, but also important structural transformations, forcing the exiles to modify their own images, the themes of their work and their communication strategies, and also the nature of their writings. The comparative study of the works of Jorge Semprún, Christa Wolf, Julio Cortázar and Alicia Dujovne Ortiz allows us to discover common aesthetic changes between these politically committed writers, who have flown respectively from Spain, Germany, and Argentina, and to note the birth of a new form of writing
